Volunteer Week 2012 Happy 50th, Amway Canada! IBOAI The IBO Talent Show Recognition Win, Win, Win! The 2013 VIP Tour of Amway A Letter from Doug and Steve Amway has a long history of investing in the communities where we do business, a practice with its roots in the philosophy of our fathers, Rich DeVos and Jay Van Andel. They shared a passion for “helping people live better lives” and felt a responsibility for making the world a better place. Acting on that belief, Amway and its Independent Business Owners have contributed more than $400 million to a host of causes globally and throughout North America since 1959. What’s equally amazing about this is it has been a partnership from the beginning. You never hesitated; you walked up next to us and said, let’s do this together. You ran with our original programs and supported them in a big way. Then you developed your own to make the impact even greater! We’re proud of you and the amazing things you do for others where you live and around the world. You model leadership in your businesses and communities; you share your success with others and you inspire the best of human achievement. Thank you. And they write – quickly and excitedly, trying to capture what she is saying. Because they know her words will be full of wisdom and advice that will help them achieve their dreams and goals. She and her husband, Barry Chi, are icons in the world of Amway and are acknowledged in the global business world as amazingly successful salespeople. The Wall Street Journal® featured Holly in a profile earlier this year, touting her leadership, her teaching, and her broad appeal: “She leads massive rallies across Asia, at one point filling a 21,000-person arena in Taiwan last fall.” “I actually feel very fortunate that I had such a harsh childhood because it makes me appreciate all the more what we have today,” she says humbly. Whether her audience is in the thousands, or just a few intimate friends sitting around her living room in Las Vegas, Holly always speaks sincerely from the heart and with a passion borne of her belief in the Amway™ business opportunity. Her stories are fascinating, and often emotional, as she tells how she rose from an impoverished background to run the largest Amway independent business in the world. When Holly Chen speaks, people listen. | PAGE 7 Barry Chi and Holly Chen A whirlwind journey Holly and Barry started their journey toward success in Taiwan. They were quick to realize the potential of the Amway™ business opportunity when the Taiwan affiliate opened for business in 1982, and signed up right away. A former teacher, Holly had actually tried other multilevel marketing businesses when she was struggling to make ends meet on a small salary with three children. “But none of them compared to what Amway offered,” she says, referring to the Amway Independent Business Owner (IBO) Compensation Plan. Today, the enormous IBO organization they developed, called chao fan, which means “extraordinary” in Mandarin, is present in more than 20 countries, from mainland China to Russia to France to the U.S. They started their North American business in late 1994. By 2000 they qualified as new Emeralds. They reached Diamond in 2002, Crown Ambassador in 2009, and Founders Crown Ambassador in 2011. Today, they are PAGE 8 | acknowledged as the heads of the largest Amway business in the world, with 70 Founders Achievement Award (FAA) points. Holly’s three children are also IBOs; son Te-Pei Liu qualified as Diamond in North America in 2011. “My mother inspired me to become an entrepreneur,” he says. “I would probably still be in traditional sales, living a very ordinary life, if it weren’t for her.” Indeed, Holly and Barry have inspired literally thousands of people to take control of their lives and achieve their true potential. They are tireless in their work, passionate in their approach. Follow a good model One of their strongest messages to new IBOs is to learn from those who have achieved success. “The quickest way to succeed is not to be an explorer, finding your own path, but a follower, leveraging the experiences of others and following in their footsteps,” advises Barry. Their philosophy when entering new markets is similar: Follow your own footsteps and duplicate what you’ve done elsewhere. “Why reinvent the wheel when it’s already been invented and proven to be successful?” asks Holly. “It’s no different than the approach McDonald’s takes to deliver a consistent product in all of their restaurants,” she continues. “No matter where you are in the world, when you go into one of their restaurants, you know the food will be consistent. Why? Because they have a good model and they follow it, just as Amway does. IBO leaders, too, must be consistent in our words and actions. Can you imagine the chaos that would result if everyone had a different way of doing things?” | PAGE 9 Barry Chi and Holly Chen Natural leaders Holly is a natural leader. On stage, her energy is evident as she paces; her enthusiasm, boundless. And, as a former teacher, she is a big believer in education. She and Barry have developed strong training programs, and they use the same format and messaging with downline IBOs all over the world: Monday’s training is focused on opportunity messaging; Wednesday’s classes focus on the role of products; Friday is for experience sharing; and classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays focus on specific products. Their approach is formulaic, proven, and the basis of much of their success in growing their business and developing new leaders. A former marine engineer, Barry loves talking with IBOs about Amway™ products, sharing information and explaining why they’re of such high quality. “People get excited when they learn about the science and technology behind them,” he says. Even more important, “the products are the foundation of our business and it’s imperative that people understand how they work.” PAGE 10 | They emphasize the ARTISTRY® and NUTRILITE® product lines with downline IBOs to make sure everyone understands the importance of aligning with the company’s focus on health and beauty. “If we all have the same goals, we can all succeed,” says Holly. Collaborating has always been important to this dynamic duo. When they visit the U.S. from Taiwan, several downline Crown Ambassadors from other Amway affiliates accompany them, so the leaders also can see the enthusiasm of the North American IBOs. Always learning Holly feels you’re never too experienced to learn something from those who are new to the business. “The questions they ask tell you what’s on their minds, and it may be something you never thought of,” she says. She smiles as she shares her habit of asking new IBOs who come for training to write down all of their questions and then throw them into a box. “Then, after three months of training, I ask the person to read the questions and it always makes them laugh because they have learned so much in the meantime!” “ If we all have the same goals, we can all succeed.” – Holly Chen Holly’s words of wisdom A former teacher, Holly Chen is skilled at making points in ways everyone can understand and remember. Here are some analogies she often uses. On pacing yourself: “Don’t overwhelm new IBOs with too much information or too many products; take it slowly at first. You wouldn’t feed beefsteak to a new baby, would you? No, you’d give him formula because that’s all he can handle. Same with new IBOs: start out small, then increase it gradually as they learn and grow.” On keeping it simple: “When explaining our business to others, think about Thomas Edison. He made it so simple for us. We just turn on a switch and we have light. But if Edison had explained all the details that went into making that light bulb and how complicated electricity is, no one would have followed him. You can’t make it too complicated or people won’t listen.” (“And there’s another lesson from Edison, too,” she adds: “He had many failures before he had success.”) On leadership: “Moving people from belief to action is like teaching someone to swim: They know they can swim, but they’re fearful; they don’t know how to start. You may have to give them a push to get them into the water. Then you have to jump into the water yourself to show them how it’s done. You swim together until that person can do it by himself. That’s what leaders do.” On gaining experience: “It’s like being in the army: You need to be in many battles in order to gain enough experience to win the war.” | PAGE 11 Barry Chi and Holly Chen Giving hope to children the elderly, too, and perhaps do something to pay for the education of IBO children,” she says. Holly and Barry recently were honored by Amway with a Founders Council Matching Grant for her work with children in Taiwan. She and Barry sponsor a program, The Hope School Project, in the southern part of the country. The project provides programs and support for desperately needy children, many of whom have been abandoned by parents who moved away to larger cities to find work. “My father died when I was young and we often didn’t have enough food to eat,” says Holly. “So being in a position to help these children gives me great joy.” Holly says people ask her all the time why she continues to work so hard. “I tell them, ‘Because it makes me happy!’” Her passion for her work and the role it plays in changing lives is ever so evident when she shares, “I feel it is my mission to tell the world about this life-changing business.” It’s another heart-warming example of the good that has come from the partnerships Holly and Barry have with the company and downline IBOs, who love volunteering at the schools. Holly is currently exploring the idea of starting a foundation to expand the impact of the tremendous philanthropic work she and Barry have led throughout her home country of Taiwan. She shares, “I would like to set aside some money to help more young children and PAGE 12 | And the world is not only listening, it’s taking notes. U.S. IBOs were considered “active” in months in 2010 when they attempted to make a retail sale, or presented the Amway IBO Compensation Plan, or received bonus money, or attended an Amway or IBO meeting. If someone sustained that level of activity every month for a whole year, their annualized income would be $2,424. Of course, not every IBO chooses to be active every month. “Gross Income” means the amount received from retail sales, minus the cost of goods sold, plus monthly bonuses and cash incentives. It excludes all annual bonuses and cash incentives, and all non-cash awards, which may be significant. There may also be significant business expenses, mostly discretionary, that may be greater in relation to income in the first years of operation. | PAGE 13 Easter Seals: 30 Years g n i t a r eb l Ce Ye p i h s r e n t r a p s ’ y a w ars of Am ! s l a e S r e t s a E h t i w Amway has a long history of investing in the communities where we do business, a practice with its roots in the philosophy of co-founders Rich DeVos and Jay Van Andel. They shared a passion for “helping people live better lives” and felt a responsibility for making the world a better place. Acting on that belief, Amway and its Independent Business Owners have contributed more than $400 million to a host of causes in North America and globally since 1959. PAGE 14 | | PAGE 15 Easter Seals: 30 Years Easter Seals and Amway: An Enduring Partnership PAGE 16 | In 1983, Amway began a partnership with Easter Seals – and the relationship continues to flourish today, nearly 30 years later. In the early 1980s, Nan Van Andel, daughter of Jay Van Andel, was responsible for Amway corporate communications and instrumental in forging the new relationship. Under her leadership as chairwoman of Amway’s Easter Seals Annual Campaign, the company played a key role in Easter Seals’ Annual Telethons. Well-known celebrities such as Pat Boone and Richard Thomas took the stage with Independent Business Owners (IBOs) and corporate leaders as IBOs and employees manned the phones, raising millions of dollars each year. Since then, IBO groups have raised millions more, working independently and in partnership with Amway to benefit the thousands of families who rely on Easter Seals. | PAGE 17 Easter Seals: 30 Years Action from Values Shared values Many say it’s the similarities between the two organizations that have made it such an enduring – and successful – relationship. “Easter Seals is all about changing lives and helping people realize their full potential. So is Amway,” observes Sandy Spielmaker, Vice President, Sales, Amway North America. “The philosophies of the two organizations are very compatible.” “I am always struck by how the Amway Founders’ Fundamentals – Freedom, Family, Hope, Reward – translate so easily to our work, too,” agrees Alex Steele, Director of Marketing & Corporate Relations for Easter Seals Global Headquarters in Chicago. IBOs also see connections. “We talk a lot about giving from the heart in our business and that’s what Easter Seals is about, too,” says IBO Betty Jedrlinic. “Both believe in taking a ‘bootstraps’ approach,” adds her husband, John. “You have somebody there to guide you, and then you set goals and work hard to achieve them. That’s the way it is in our business and that’s the way it is with Easter Seals.” In 2003, Amway formalized its community-support ® efforts by launching the Amway ONE BY ONE Campaign for Children program. It is a focused and powerful initiative to make a real difference in the lives of children around the world. The program brings together the resources of the entire Amway community – Independent Business Owners, employees, affiliates, and customers – with the goal of helping children. PAGE 18 | Easter Seals serves more than 1.6 million individuals each year Easter Seals began life as The National Association for Crippled Children in 1919. Today, with more than 500 centers throughout North America, it is the leading nonprofit service provider in the U.S. for those with autism, developmental disabilities, physical disabilities, and other special needs. For more information visit: easterseals.com (in the United States), easterseals.ca (in Canada), or write to info@serpr.org (in Puerto Rico). | PAGE 19 Easter Seals: 30 Years Why they do it In their commitment to Easter Seals and the families it serves, IBOs throughout North America and the Caribbean have rappelled down buildings, led walka-thons, held auctions, provided their professional expertise, served on local boards, hosted picnics, knitted mittens – and helped raise more than $30 million along the way. Why do they do it? And how do they find the time? mother said to us, ‘Do you know how hard it is to bathe a child who doesn’t bend?’ That really got to me.” A few years ago, Claudia, along with her friend and fellow IBO, Leila Levesque, came up with their own fundraising program, Stitch in Time. It began as a way to collect loose change for Easter Seals, but has since grown to serve as an umbrella organization for a variety of programs that their groups have come up with – ideas that have spread to other Amway teams, too. “You can always make time for things that are important to you,” says Samina Bhattacharyya. “We just put it on our calendar and don’t plan anything else for that day. It’s that simple.” Claudia and Angelo Nardone, along with their IBO teams, have actively supported Easter Seals almost the entire time Amway has – nearly 29 years. Claudia says she was first moved to help when she heard a mom talk about how Easter Seals equipped her family’s bathroom so they could give their daughter a bath. “The Indeed, there are many reasons why IBOs feel so strongly about supporting Easter Seals: • “Maria and I were so grateful to count 10 fingers and 10 toes on our daughter when she was born that we committed to always help those who weren’t as lucky as we were. Our hearts go out to them.” – Joe Tedesco IBO and Board Member, N.Y. Easter Seals • “When the kids come running up to you with open arms, it just makes you feel so good knowing that you’ve helped make it happen. We’re all busy in life, but you really need some avenue to get involved with these types of things.” – Kanti Gala IBO and Board Member, N.Y. Easter Seals PAGE 20 | • “We have a lot of young people in our organization and we’re able to pass on that spirit of giving to them – and now they want to get involved. They’re psyched to come and help out, and that’s the best impact we could have.” – Aris Pavlides IBO and Chair, N.Y. Easter Seals Board • “In this high-tech day and age, people can almost become faceless. But getting involved with fundraising events allows us to connect with others on a personal level, creating tighter bonds with the people who live and work in our communities. It’s also fun to meet the people you’re helping. And who knows, you may need help from Easter Seals yourself someday.” • “We have a special-needs daughter, so we know how hard it is on families. In fact, one reason we started our Amway™ business was so my wife, Janice, could be home with her. But our challenges were minor compared to what some families go through. We want to ease their burden. And now that our daughter is 22, she volunteers right alongside us at fundraisers.” – Shaun Guthrie IBO in Canada and Drop Zone participant – Bill Kerr IBO in Canada • “Most people have no idea how much Easter Seals does for the families, so we try to build awareness and encourage participation. A wheelchair alone can cost $15,000, and many families can’t afford that on their own, especially with all the other costs they have. So we connect first with our hearts and then with our time and/or money.” – Doyle Yager IBO and Co-Director, Yager Family Foundation “We’re not just about selling products.” IBOs say supporting Easter Seals and other causes has benefits for them as business owners, too. “It lets people know that we’re not just about selling products or recruiting people,” says Ralph Helwig. Greg Anthoine finds the Drop Zone activities (see page 26) are great for team building. “We have our own local teams and we are part of the bigger Yager team, so it’s all about working together to reach a common goal. That’s how things get done.” Shaun Guthrie feels that Amway’s partnership with Easter Seals is “a huge blessing to many people, and we should all get on board to leverage these opportunities to get involved,” he says. “And, too, events are a great way to meet other ‘doers.’” Claudia Nardone has found that working with Easter Seals “forces me to reach outside myself. It’s a great creative avenue for me to look at things differently and find solutions that I probably would not have thought of.” And that carries over into her business as well. Aris Pavlides summed it up this way: “Helping others impacts our lives in many positive ways and that enhances all of our relationships, including our business partnerships.” | PAGE 21 Easter Seals: 30 Years Corporate sponsorships help Easter Seals do more Although Easter Seals in the U.S. receives funding from Medicare and Medicaid*, corporate sponsorships and individual donors are critical to their local operations, says spokesman Alex Steele. “We never want to be in a position where we have to turn anyone away, and it is thanks in large part to companies like Amway and their IBOs that we can do as much as we do,” he says. *Easter Seals Canada receives no government funding. AN EASTER SEALS SUCCESS STORY: Ben Trockman When Ben Trockman was 17, he was injured in a crash during a motocross race and the resulting spinal cord injury left him paralyzed below his neck. After months of intensive rehabilitation at some of the best hospitals in the country, Ben wanted desperately to return to his family and friends in his hometown of Evansville, Indiana. Thanks to the Easter Seals Rehabilitation Center there, he was able to do that. Working with a therapist who specializes in spinal cord injuries, Ben began building muscle strength. Easter Seals also helped make his parents’ home more accessible for his wheelchair, a high-tech machine that they maintain for him. “I didn’t know what to expect from Easter Seals, but they are great,” says Ben. Today, Ben is an active, articulate junior at the University of Southern Indiana. He uses a voiceactivated computer provided by Easter Seals for his schoolwork and is an excellent student. His passion for sports has fueled his goal of becoming a sports writer. (See 5 Reasons Why IBOs Support Easter Seals on p. 35.) Kanti and Lata Gala did their own due diligence on Easter Seals and started a nonprofit, the We Live to Give Foundation, to give donors peace of mind knowing that they are contributing to organizations that have been researched and pre-qualified. “We found that everything Amway told us about Easter Seals is true,” says Kanti. “They are a very well-run organization and the people we have worked with locally are all very dedicated professionals.” A remarkable life: Palmer Harston In April 1995, Palmer Harston and her family were vacationing in Nashville when a car accident changed her life forever. Palmer incurred severe spinal cord injuries, leaving her paralyzed. After spending a month in a Nashville hospital undergoing surgeries and receiving occupational therapy services, she returned home to Lexington, Kentucky. There, Easter Seals Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital provided numerous services for her, teaching her how to use a wheelchair, get dressed, and perform routine tasks. Since then, Palmer’s accomplishments have been nothing short of remarkable. By age 13, Palmer was a dynamic eighth grader, singing in her school chorus, taking modeling classes, riding her bike, playing wheelchair tennis, bowling, and practicing gymnastics! She has since gone on to create a cheerleading team for girls with disabilities, travel to Africa to work with AIDS orphans, graduate from Vanderbilt University with her JD – and become a new bride. To learn more, go to easterseals.com and search for: Palmer Harston. | PAGE 23 Easter Seals: 30 Years Helping your own Community What really cements the relationship for many IBOs who support Easter Seals is knowing that funds they raise will stay in their own communities, helping their friends and neighbors – and sometimes their own families. Easter Seals has more than 500 schools, centers, camps, and other facilities coast to coast throughout North America and the Caribbean. These facilities provide a broad array of services to help children who were born with disabilities, adults who have suffered debilitating injuries, elderly adults in need of companionship, and transitional services for U.S. service men and women returning from war with psychological and physical wounds. Easter Seals is there for each of them – with services ranging from counseling and physical rehabilitation to job training. Having local facilities nearby also gives people the chance to visit Easter Seals affiliates to see up close and in person how their money is being spent. Kanti and Lata Gala of New York say that the work being done at the Bronx Center, which provides early intervention services for 2- to 5-year-olds with a variety of disabilities, is “ … amazing. Their work with autistic kids is especially impressive. We’ve seen so much progress.” PAGE 24 | Angela Abdallah, National Marketing Manager, Amway Canada, has a nephew with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. He loves going to Woodeden, an Easter Seals camp where disabled kids can just be kids, sharing a summer camp experience for maybe the first time in their lives. John and Betty Jedrlinic have helped raise more than $4,000 for the Washington, D.C., area Easter Seals in a great fundraising project, called Star Brite, with the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. “Our goal next year is to get more people who donate to come with us to the Easter Seals facility here so they can see for themselves what their money is doing for these kids,” says John. | PAGE 25 Easter Seals: 30 Years “I tell people, if you can jump off an 18-story building, held by a couple of ropes, you can show the Plan, sponsor someone, and sell products.” – Greg Anthoine PAGE 26 | Drop Would YOU rappel down the side of a zone building? Walk With Me events are a very successful and family-oriented staple among fundraising efforts for Easter Seals in the U.S. Easter Seals Canada has raised the adrenaline stakes a bit with its own unique fundraising opportunity – the Drop Zone. Participants gather a minimum of $1,500 (CDN) in pledges for the chance to rappel down the side of a building, some of them more than 30 stories tall! Although initially terrified at the thought of dropping over the side of a skyscraper, Amway Canada’s Angela Abdallah believes in leading by example. “I didn’t feel we could ask IBOs to get involved if I wasn’t willing to do it myself,” explains the four-time rappeller. “It’s such a unique fundraising opportunity,” she adds. “When you ask friends to sponsor you, they say, ‘You must be out of your mind, but sure, I’ll do it!’” Patrick Reyes, an IBO who also happens to have cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair and canes, brought many to tears when he rappelled down. “Bless his heart, here he is with all his own challenges raising money to help others,” says Angela. Another woman in London, Ontario, actually participated in her wheelchair. It may sound dangerous, but it’s actually very safe because you’re in a harness attached to a pulley, “and even if you fainted, they’d get you down,” says IBO Greg Anthoine, who enjoys dressing in costume for the event. Whether it’s money, ideas, time, teams, or talents, there are countless ways to give to Easter Seals. For example: • Many IBOs serve on Easter Seals boards, both regional and national, including Aris Pavlides, who also enjoys volunteering at the Easter Seals Bronx Center. As a gym owner, his wife Denise loves getting the crowd physically warmed up for Walk With Me events. • Ralph Helwig is the behindthe-scenes webmaster for the Nardone team’s Stitch in Time program. He handles back-office administrative duties while Leila Levesque helps coordinate activities. Ralph and his wife, Fran, recently moved to Florida and are now helping to start an Easter Seals project in their retirement community. PAGE 28 | • Greg Anthoine of Ottawa, Canada, knows not everyone is willing to jump off an 18-story building like he does for Drop Zone, so he encourages people to join the fun by taking pictures, gathering pledges, and greeting rappellers – on the ground. “It’s like I tell people in the business who say they can’t talk in front of groups: ‘Then you make the cookies and I’ll do the talking.’” • John Jedrlinic is the “unofficial” photographer at circus-related Easter Seals activities in his community. “A camera, kids, and clowns? Wow, I’m there!” He sends a CD full of photos to Easter Seals when he’s done. | PAGE 29 Easter Seals: 30 Years Celebrate! Playing for Today Gala Easter Seals New York is the proud host of the Playing for Today Gala, an annual event held at Yankee Stadium to recognize and applaud the generosity of those who support the work of Easter Seals New York. The 2012 Gala drew more than 200 people and raised an impressive $500,000 for the New York region. “The Gala is the highlight of the year for Easter Seals New York,” said Joseph DiChiara, Chairman of the New York Board of Directors. “We rarely get an opportunity to recognize all those who support our mission and make our incredible programs so successful. Its philosophy, values, and vision are closely aligned with those of Amway. | PAGE 35 Easter Seals: 30 Years Chosen Partner for Military Services With suicide, substance abuse, divorce, and unemployment higher among veterans than almost any other group, the military has chosen Easter Seals as a national partner in its quest to reverse these frightening trends. In May, Easter Seals was named by the former assistant to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Colonel David Sutherland (Retired), as the primary partner in developing a nationwide network of collaborative, community-based services and support for military service members, veterans, and their families. The new relationship dramatically expands Easter Seals’ role as a service provider. They’ll collaborate to close persistent, systemic, and harmful gaps that diminish opportunities and quality of life for millions of military service members and veterans, and their families, across the U.S. Easter Seals will directly assist thousands with reintegration, employment, health status, and family stability, as well as expand options for housing, transportation, and recreation through its newly formed Dixon Center. “Together, we’ll work to build public awareness, encourage community involvement, and promote community services while channeling resources and enabling those that have served our nation through a community-based model of collaboration,” says Colonel Sutherland. Reaching America “We recognize that the urgent needs facing the community of military members and veterans today will only be compounded by new and pressing needs among tens of thousands of service members returning from Iraq and Afghanistan,” says James E. Williams Jr., president and chief executive officer of Easter Seals. “In partnership with Colonel Sutherland, we’re ready, able, and committed to enhance our network and the communities we serve to better assist service members, veterans, and their families with the depth and support they deserve.” Did you know? Easter Seals began its work with military families and service members returning home from World War II. It has continued to provide valuable rehabilitation and reintegration services throughout the last 70 years. PAGE 36 | Easter Seals is a provider of exceptional services for disabled children and so much more! Having witnessed a scene involving children and adults alike climbing out of abandoned cars and buildings, and having listened to stories of those who came to be homeless, Aris felt moved to commit himself to their cause. This year marks his 16th anniversary of serving New York’s and New Jersey’s homeless, and his 15th of serving on the NYCR Board. Over the past 20 years, The Relief Bus has connected more than 191,000 people to shelters, job training, medical care, and detox and/or faith-based drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers. The program works out of two former school buses, each converted to house a food service unit, a clothing unit, and counseling and referral offices. “Sometimes it’s giving them the most basic necessities, just a hug or addressing where they can sleep at night,” says Aris. “The food is the hook to get them to the bus and give them hope and help.” Relief Bus staff and volunteers serve more than 400,000 meals each year. A portion of the people who seek Relief Bus services are abusers of alcohol and/or drugs, which Aris explains is not always a cutand-dried issue. “Sometimes the substance abuse comes before, but sometimes it comes after,” he notes. That very first day Aris volunteered on The Relief Bus, he met a former advertising executive with one of the most poignant stories he can recall from his time spent with NYCR. “His wife had been hit by a car in the streets of Manhattan,” shares Aris. “He had to take off work to care for his child, then he lost his job, his apartment, and his daughter. Shelters wouldn’t take him in because he was (a homeless man) with a little girl. In his case, the substance abuse came after” he became homeless. With the assistance of Relief Bus staff and volunteers, the PAGE 40 | “Sometimes it’s giving them the most basic necessities, just a hug or addressing where they can sleep at night.” – Aris Pavlides man received drug counseling and has since gotten back on his feet and been reunited with his daughter. The man’s success story is just one of several that have resulted from the compassion and kindness exhibited by staff and volunteers at NYCR. “Our team has a lot of givers,” shares Aris, who has run several fundraising events over the years with the help of his wife, Denise. This year NYCR plans to raise $80,000 after expenses to help fund its continuing efforts to transform the lives of the poor. Aris, who was introduced to The Relief Bus by his Amway Executive Diamond, Ray Melillo, has mobilized a team of IBOs throughout the years to help build a new kitchen and repair and replace the buses. They have also helped fund lodging for mission groups that come to serve on the buses. Aris and Denise say that, through The Relief Bus, they have learned that each of us has not only the ability, but also the responsibility to lift up our fellow man. Since 2006, the nonprofit City Dive, Inc. has hosted Resurrection Weekend Outreach (RWO), a free annual event during which families in need are provided food, clothing, practical information and services, and plenty of fun. Throughout the event, City Dive volunteers distributed a total of 700 bags of clothes. For the past four years, Kimberlie M. Wade, an Amway IBO, has been involved with City Dive as a servant leader, donating her time to make RWO and other City Dive events and programs successful in engaging, equipping, and empowering at-risk communities in Charlotte. One little boy in particular touched Kimberlie’s heart as he barely spoke, but communicated to her through the use of hand gestures. She says, “I just hope that he understood what I meant when I told him about those of us who wear the purple City Dive shirts – that if he ever sees us, he can trust that he’ll be safe, that he’ll be welcomed, and that we did not come to express pity or sorrow, but that we came to equip, encourage, and empower him and his entire family. “This year, we had more than 2,200 families attend what our founder, Bishop Terrell L. Murphy, calls ® ® ‘bringing Disney and Carowinds to the West Boulevard,’” says Kimberlie, referring to RWO. Not only did families enjoy carnival rides, caricatures from a sketch artist, and shooting hoops at the event, they also received clothes, beauty and barbershop services, food, Easter baskets, dental screenings, and career services – all free of charge. “For a month, we (the servant leaders) collect clothes and work to create a City Dive clothing boutique for the citizens of the West Boulevard,” explains Kimberlie. “We set up the clothing boutique like an actual store with a checkout area, shopping bags, and personal shoppers.” PAGE 42 | “Since my first time serving in this area, it amazes me when I see children 7 to 10 years old bringing their younger siblings and cousins in to shop for clothes,” adds Kimberlie. “I love serving our extended family in the West Boulevard, and we, the City Dive servant leaders, are truly privileged to serve.” – Kimberlie M. Wade Rebuilding Communities One Woman at a Time “There may be help out there, but we don’t know where it is.” care for her parents. “Sometimes I don’t get home until 9 or 10 p.m.,” adds Debbie. “But it’s all worth it.” Spoken by incarcerated women afraid and uncertain of what their future would bring, these are the words that set Amway IBO Debbie Lassiter on a journey that led to her co-founding the Convergence Resource Center (CRC), a nonprofit organization in Milwaukee. The organization, run by a staff of 20 volunteers, is dedicated to helping formerly incarcerated women make critical lifestyle changes and remain committed to those changes outside prison walls. Among the services offered by the CRC are computer classes and support for breaking alcohol addiction. This year it is pursuing two new initiatives: FASD PASS (Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Prevention Awareness Support Services), which will raise community awareness and provide assistance to avoid alcohol abuse during pregnancies, and the Human and Sex Trafficking Support Initiative, organizing support for survivors of human and sex trafficking. Debbie, Chief Executive Officer of CRC, and three other women joined forces to found the organization in April 2004 with the intention of connecting formerly incarcerated women with the resources they need to successfully reintegrate back into society. “One of my favorite stories is of a woman who sat in front of a keyboard and started to shake. She didn’t believe that she could learn to use a computer,” shares Debbie. “Today she uses the entire Microsoft ® Office Suite and volunteers at the center. She says, ‘Convergence saves my life every day.’” Currently in its ninth year, the CRC has served over 200 women and offers 22 services, many of which focus on job readiness and job retention. “We’ve had ladies go on to be heads of business departments, and some have started their own businesses,” shares Debbie. “Families write saying that it’s the longest their daughters have ever been clean.” Systems programmer by day and philanthropist by night, Debbie’s goal is to build her Amway™ business to the point where she can work full time at the CRC and have more time to “Sometimes I don’t get home until 9 or 10 p.m. But it’s all worth it.” – Debbie Lassiter volunteer week winner | PAGE 43 VOLUNTEER WEEK 2012 volunteer week winner Love on a Leash Standing at a healthy 45 pounds, with boundless energy and a heart full of love, a dog named George Oscar Bluth is enjoying his second chance at life with the help and compassion of Amway IBO Chris Summers as well as other volunteers and staff of the nonprofit organization Austin Pets Alive (APA). “APA rescues animals from Austin and all five surrounding counties, then places them in an extensive volunteer foster program to keep them off the euthanasia list in the city animal centers,” explains Chris. APA, which provides medical coverage, physical therapy, and training for all the animals they rescue, has been instrumental in making Austin the largest “no kill” city (i.e., 90% of animals received in shelters are not euthanized) in the U.S. as of 2011. Chris first became involved as a volunteer at APA two years ago. As the race director for the Austin Doggie Du Dash Duathlon, he was searching for a source of loaner dogs to accompany racers on their 200-meter swim and one-mile run. PAGE 44 | Since joining APA, Chris, a highly conditioned triathlete, has been a regular member of APA’s Joga-Dog program. “A lot of the volunteers can’t handle the bigger, stronger dogs, so a bunch of folks and I go down there and run them,” explains Chris. The program is beneficial to both the runners and the dogs as both groups enjoy some outside exercise, and the dogs develop much-needed social skills that make them more favorable adoption prospects. “A tired dog is a happy dog,” laughs Chris. Last November, Chris chose to temporarily foster George Oscar Bluth after George was rescued by an APA staff member just 30 minutes before he was to be euthanized. Having been hit by a car, George had sustained severe injuries, including a fractured spine. “No one knew what his recovery would entail,” says Chris. “We just knew it would take some work.” Many physical therapy, acupuncture, and chiropractic treatments later, George is now able to run alongside Chris on Austin’s trails with the aid of a dog wheelchair. “He is amazingly fast on two legs,” adds Chris. George Oscar Bluth was named for a character – a magician – on the television series Arrested Development, for his ability to charm everyone he meets. He and many other animals are available for adoption or sponsoring through the APA. You can also stay updated on George’s progress and doggie ® adventures by “Liking” his Facebook page. Building ramps across his backyard, helping George with daily physical therapy exercises, and dressing George in toddler-sized blue jeans to prevent him from scraping up his legs are just a few of the ways in which Chris has gone above and beyond to ensure George’s comfort, happiness, and speedy recovery. “He is amazingly fast on two legs.” – Chris Summers | PAGE 45 VOLUNTEER WEEK 2012 Special Needs Children Realize Baseball Dreams The cracking sound of a bat hitting a baseball, the smell of a fresh new mitt, the cheers heard as a player touches home plate – these sensory memories are often a staple of childhood and adolescence across the U.S. and many other parts of the world. But for those with a physical or cognitive impairment, the opportunity to play baseball is either unavailable or comes with special challenges. In 2004, Amway IBOs Hoyt and Karen Nunnally were introduced to the Miracle League of South Fulton in Georgia, a team of 40 special needs children and young adults aged 3 to 19 who are fulfilling their dreams of playing baseball. “We showed up (to our first game) and it’s been history since,” says Hoyt. At each game, volunteers known as “buddies” accompany the children to help them with batting, fielding, and moving about the bases. The rules are simple: all players get to bat, no one strikes out, and all games end in a tie – and everyone involved gets a free dinner funded by donations from the caterer and Board members. “One of my favorite players is a young man named D. D was born with Down syndrome and has a great sense of humor,” shares Karen, who goes on to say that D is known for always sliding into home plate. “Stand out of his way!” she jokes. “For these parents of these inspirational kids, it is a dream come true.” – Karen Nunnally PAGE 46 | “What is exciting … is watching how much fun the kids are having, to see the smiles on their faces, and not just on their faces, but on their parents’ faces,” shares Hoyt. Karen adds, “For these parents of these inspirational kids, it is a dream come true. … For that day, they are like every other child.” Many of the players come from low- to moderateincome families, but no one has ever been turned away because of financial constraints. Miracle League of South Fulton founder Lee Blitch and his assistant, Meletta Clayton, “have poured in much of their own money to purchase uniforms and pay registration fees,” notes Karen. Karen has served on the league’s board for the past two years and is actively involved with Hoyt in fundraising, making schedules, and contacting and recruiting volunteers. She says that the league is working diligently to raise money to build a Miracle League baseball field, complete with rubberized surfaces and a concession stand, because the team currently plays in an indoor gymnasium. “We dream big, just like our players,” says Karen. “Our Amway™ business has taught us to love and nurture others. There are different types of people in this world and everyone has something good to contribute.” volunteer week winner | PAGE 47 VOLUNTEER WEEK 2012 volunteer week winner Saving Coral Reefs, Protecting Coasts and Sea Life What began in 2001 as a grass-roots 4-H project started by Amway IBO Ken Nedimyer and his daughter, Kelly, has expanded into a nonprofit organization that attracts volunteers from countries as far away as Germany and England. The Coral Restoration Foundation (CRF) has planted 4,000 corals on 22 reefs in the Florida Keys, but according to Ken and his wife, Denise, they are just getting started. “Just in the last two weeks, we planted 1,000 corals,” notes Ken. “We expect to plant another 8,000 to 10,000 this year.” Often referred to as the “rainforests of the ocean,” coral reefs help prevent floods and reduce the impact of hurricanes and typhoons in coastal areas, as well as provide homes to 25% of the world’s marine fish species. Since the 1970s, coral reefs have been in rapid decline, particularly in the Caribbean, where elkhorn and staghorn coral are now considered critically endangered. “I realized that nobody else was doing anything about the reefs dying,” says Ken, who has been diving for the past 40 years. “I figured somebody had to do something, so it might as well be me.” The CRF team and visiting groups of volunteers grow staghorn and elkhorn corals in an offshore nursery for a year before transplanting them onto reefs. Ken notes that CRF continues to tweak its techniques in order to make the process efficient and sustainable on a large scale; in the past four years, they have seen dozens of corals spawn naturally. “There was no book written, no formula to follow. We had to innovate and learn from our failures,” says Ken. “All the things we’ve learned in the Amway™ business – the value of education, the idea of duplication, leadership training, how to treat and respect other people – we’ve applied to the coral business and everyday life.” Denise, who is a CRF Board member, explains that her and Ken’s Amway business works hand in glove with their passion for the environment. “Because we live on islands, some of the water we use washes into the ocean, so we encourage resorts to use Amway environmentally sensitive laundry products,” she says. “Integrity is such a big thing for us and Amway is a company that cares about integrity, the environment, and its people. We try to impart that on the community.” PAGE 48 | “It’s more important to make a difference than to make money.” – Ken Nedimyer This past March, Ken was named a CNN Hero for his ongoing work in coral restoration and the news of CRF’s work has been spreading. “Tanzania has asked us to put in a nursery,” says Denise. CRF recently received a permit to plant 50,000 corals from North Key Largo through Key West, where CRF developed a small training nursery to assist the Florida Keys Community College marine biology program. Over the years, the coral restoration project has been passed down to each of Ken and Denise’s four daughters, all of whom are Amway IBOs. Having originally intended to sell the corals, the Nedimyer family finds it more rewarding to put the corals back onto the reefs, and to this day they have not sold a single one. Ken shares, “If we’ve learned anything as a family, it’s (that it is) more important to make a difference than to make money.” | PAGE 49 VOLUNTEER WEEK 2012 and supplies are collected to cover the shelter’s expenses for three months. Although Jarrod is no longer a math teacher, he is still involved in the school fundraiser as well as others, which he and Tara help organize. “Once we became members of the Board … we saw how the finances are tied to the euthanasia rate. We decided we had to do something to help raise money to help keep those animals in the shelter just a little longer to possibly find their forever home,” explains Jarrod. volunteer week winner Animal lovers Unite to Support Local Animal Shelter What began as a small student fundraiser has grown into a countywide effort to support the Gibson County Animal Shelter of Indiana in any way, shape, or form. Amway IBO Jarrod Beck became involved with the shelter more than 10 years ago and has continued to support the animals with his wife, Tara, through organizing and running fundraisers and educating the public about the benefits of adopting pets from animal shelters. They have both served on the shelter’s Board for the past six years. A former high school math teacher, Jarrod combined his love for animals with his students’ pleas for bonus points in conducting a food drive for the shelter. Ten years later, the tradition continues and now takes place in three other schools. “I originally did it as a gesture for the shelter, but quickly realized that it was also a great teaching point for my students on how to be a philanthropist,” says Jarrod. “One year, a little boy was saving change all year long and brought in a big pretzel jar of change. It ended up being over $150 – and he was an elementary student.” The year following the first food drive, Jarrod expanded the collection to include items such as leashes, toys, blankets, and prepaid gas cards. Through this annual collection, enough money PAGE 50 | Throughout the year, Jarrod and Tara run several events, including car shows, two® hour Zumbathons , and cookouts at local grocery stores, to help support the shelter. “From April to June, we are usually out in businesses looking for donations and sponsors … It is worth it to know that the one-day event provides for the shelter for a month,” says Jarrod. “There are so many people who help us. A lot of little things add up.” The shelter currently houses about 40 cats and 35 dogs, while Jarrod and Tara house 16 animals of their own, including six that came from animal shelters, plus four horses. “There are so many great animals out there,” shares Jarrod. “Our goals are to be a limited-kill shelter and to get as many animals out the door as possible.” Cyclists Leave Cancer in the Dust The roaring success of the very first B Strong Ride event, a bicycle ride to leave cancer behind, could hardly be attributed to beginner’s luck. In 2011, Amway IBOs Dave and Patty Benson worked diligently with other event supporters to organize and run the first ride, raising over $273,000 – the most of any LIVESTRONG-partnered event nationwide. This year, they hope to double that number. “The key is not so much cancer research as it is improvement of lifestyle,” says Patty, who sits on the B Strong Ride Advisory Board with her husband. “Last year, in excess of $50,000 was given to the Boulder Community Hospital Inpatient Cancer Center. They used the money to spawn the design of a new wing, which will include a courtyard for the patients to enjoy,” says Dave. “They’ll start building next year.” Dave and Patty note that the cause has gone viral in terms of support for and involvement in the event, which is partnered with LIVESTRONG and the George Karl Foundation, founded by cancer survivor George Karl, the Denver Nuggets head coach. “The new partnership ensures more local support and greater visibility,” explains Dave. One month before this year’s event, the number of preregistered participants exceeded the number of last year’s participants. “We have enlisted several additional families to help with this ride, which was quite easy once they understood the cause,” says Patty. “It grows and grows and grows!” | PAGE 51 VOLUNTEER WEEK 2012 Gearing Up for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation Amway IBO Wil Loewer has been a motorcyclist for most of his life. “When we got married, he threw me on the back of a motorcycle and said, ‘Let’s go!’” laughs his wife and fellow IBO, Suzanne Loewer. This past May, the Loewers channeled their passion ® for motorcycling into the Louisiana Ride for Kids , a motorcycling event held in support of the Pediatric ® Brain Tumor Foundation (PBTF). On May 20, 150 people hopped onto motorcycles and into sidecars to enjoy an hourlong ride through scenic central Louisiana. The official Stars of the event – four children diagnosed with cancer – were given VIP treatment for the ride. “Sometimes the Stars can’t ride for that long on a motorcycle, so most of them ride in sidecars,” explains Suzanne. “We take care of the kids first.” The ride raised nearly $23,000. “To see almost $23,000 written on that check – that was special,” shares Suzanne. While raising funds is certainly important, Wil and Suzanne agree that there is more to the experience than the checks. “These kids’ lives change after a brain tumor diagnosis. Their lives become one of doctors, nurses, tubes, and shaved heads. When they ride, they get to forget all that and just have fun. Their smiles make everything worthwhile,” says Wil. The Loewers note that with the help of fundraising events like Ride for Kids to support pediatric brain tumor research, approximately 60% of children diagnosed with cancer survive for more than five years. In 1960, that number was just 4%. Through the annual motorcycle rides held in almost every U.S. state, the PBTF Ride for Kids has raised more than $67 million since 1984. “It’s a whole lot of work, but when you see the smiling faces of our Stars as they complete their ride, you know it has all been worth it.” “ These kids’ lives change after a brain tumor diagnosis. When they ride, they get to forget all that and just have fun. Their smiles make everything worthwhile.” – Wil Loewer PAGE 52 | | PAGE 53 VOLUNTEER WEEK 2012 Warming the Hearts of Kansas City’s Homeless Magic, music, hot chocolate, and more – these are just a few of the things that Kansas City residents enjoy at the twice-a-year events put on by nonprofit Care of Poor People, Inc. (COPP) in the Kansas City area. COPP serves the city’s homeless and low-income populations by hosting major events that take place around Thanksgiving and Easter for up to 2,300 residents in need. For the past 12 years, Amway IBOs George and Diana Arnold have volunteered their time for these events. “At our last event, we had 85 ten-foot tables filled with clothing stacked a minimum of 4 feet high,” says George, who likes to wear a whimsical hat while working the events to make people smile and to make him more easily identifiable to volunteers. Diana adds, “We always have coffee and hot chocolate, especially in the winter after Thanksgiving.” Both volunteers and those served walk away from the events with a newfound appreciation. “We’ve gotten stories from child volunteers saying, ‘I never realized how good I had it,’” notes George. He also shares one woman’s story that is particularly memorable for him. After a COPP event, he gave the woman a ride home, and six months later he ran into her at the next COPP event – only this time, she was on the other side of the volunteer table. “I asked her what happened, and she said that she had gotten the supplies she needed at the last event and was able to dress up, get a job, and give back to the community,” he shares. “I have a firm belief in the idea that where there’s a will, there’s a way. I believe that I’m put in touch with people who have a need, and I help to fill that need,” says George, who received the 2011 COPP Compassion Award. “That’s what I try to do with Amway, too.” PAGE 54 | It’s just part of being an active-duty family with the U.S. Air Force – every two years, the Givens family relocates to another part of the country. After every move, they seek out a way to contribute to their new community. Shortly after moving to San Antonio, Texas, Amway IBO Teresa Givens discovered West Avenue Compassion (WAC), a nonprofit with the mission of equipping low-income and underemployed families and senior citizens with the tools they need to move forward in their lives. Teresa, her husband (who is in the Air Force), and their five daughters have been volunteering with WAC programs since August 2011. On Tuesdays, WAC volunteers collect food from the San Antonio Food Bank and other sources, box it, and distribute it to about 170 families at one of several locations. The parents loved it because it was (located) so close to home. “The children learn and improve their sports skills, but more importantly, these children realize they are important and supported by their community.” Being self-employed as an IBO, Teresa is thankful for the flexibility of her schedule, which allows her to volunteer so frequently. She says, “I have achieved a productive way to live, and I enjoy volunteering with West Avenue Compassion and sharing so many of my IBO benefits with the community!” Families are also offered donated clothing, access to a community health nurse, assistance with job applications, GED and ESL classes, and parenting classes. Last spring Teresa helped WAC kick off a new venture: providing a soccer program for boys and girls under 8 years of age. “Oh, that was so much fun!” she recalls. “Some of the children’s San Antonio Families Moving Forward | PAGE 55 VOLUNTEER WEEK 2012 Medical Patients receive care in style Medical patients around the U.S. are receiving the care they need thanks to the supporters, volunteer pilots, and drivers of nonprofit Angel Flight Northeast, which provides free transportation for patients to and from homes, hospitals, and airports. Amway IBO Tom Crounse is an important part of this volunteer community. When he’s called to transport patients, he arrives dressed in a black suit and bow tie, driving a limousine. “I love doing the unexpected,” says Tom. “I love the look in their eyes when I show up in a limo.” Tom had been searching for a way to carry on the example set by his late father, who used to deliver food donations to homeless shelters in Boston every Sunday. After learning about Angel Flight Northeast from a realtor and pilot he met, he knew he had finally found the opportunity he was seeking. “He (the realtor) explained how he donates his fuel, plane, and time to provide free flights for medical patients of all ages to area hospitals,” explains Tom. “I asked, ‘How do your passengers get from the airport to the hospital?’ He said, ‘Oh, that’s easy – we have volunteers who donate their vehicles, fuel, and time. PAGE 56 | They’re called Earth Angels, and we could always use more!’” Within days, Tom became an Earth Angel. On his first call, he met a mother and her child at the Shriners Hospital for Children in Boston. They needed to meet their Angel-piloted plane for their trip home to upstate New York. “The 7-year-old boy was receiving ongoing treatment for disfiguring, severe burns he experienced as an infant. It was one of those life-changing moments I’ll never forget,” says Tom. “He was playing with handheld video games, acting just like any other child. (The experience) taught me perspective on life and what is really important.” Punches and Kicks for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital For Amway IBOs Dennis and Jody Mills, the week of Valentine’s Day calls for breaking boards, punching, and kicking – but it’s all done in the name of friendly competition and a charitable cause. Since the couple bought WestWind Martial Arts in Prosser, Washington, in 2005, they have hosted an annual weeklong fundraiser to support St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Throughout each fundraising event, break-a-thons, kick-a-thons, and spar-a-thons are held during regularly scheduled class time. Chung do kids of ages 5 and 6 as well as tae kwon do students from age 7 and up are welcome to join the competitions. “During the kick-a-thons, we have people hold up a square pad to students at waist high, then the students do either front kicks or back kicks, counting for a minute, resting for a minute, and repeating that for an hour. But if they need a five-minute break, that’s OK,” explains Jody. “We once had a 13-year-old boy do 2,595 kicks in an hour!” about $3,000 at each weeklong event. “The competitions are a fun way to break up class because they don’t need to work on their form,” adds Jody. In speaking about some of the younger students, Jody says, “I think it’s good for them because it makes them more wellrounded black belts. It’s not all about them. I like to think that they’ll give back to the community when they become adults.” Dennis and Jody bring two different sets of skills to the table to ensure each fundraiser is enjoyable and runs smoothly. Jody is the planner and Dennis leads the competitions. Dennis and Jody’s combined efforts, along with the help of their students, result in raising | PAGE 57 Happy 50th, AMWAY Canada! As Emeralds, IBOs have demonstrated their ability to sell, recruit, train, motivate, and teach others to do the same. They have built healthy organizations and are reaping the rewards of their hard work. Yusuf Ali and Maka Ahmed | Minnesota Living the dream: Yusuf and Maka began their Amway™ business after arriving in the U.S. as political refugees from war-torn Somalia. They’ve found that it’s allowed them to live a life that answers the question: “How do I build a life of meaning, passion, and balance, with the flexibility to control my time and achieve all that I want to achieve in life on my own terms?” Looking to the future: Supporting their family here and in Somalia and bringing hope to their homeland (through education and mentoring initiatives they’ve started) are foremost among this couple’s goals. Says Yusuf, “As we teach our kids (Hassan, 17; Sahra, 16; Zak, 13; and Sahal, nearly 10), what matters most is who’s better off because you lived.” Mary and José Arteaga | Illinois Living the dream: When José started his Amway business, he had three goals in sight: “For Mary not to have to work, for me to be home with my wife and kids (Gumaro, 15, and Favián, 11), and for us to never again depend upon employment.” Mary credits José’s dedication to their business with saving their marriage and the business with helping them “come out on top.” Looking to the future: “I love helping people get out of the same rut we were in!” Mary remarks. “We want to share this opportunity with as many people as possible,” adds José, who’d like to become savvy at investing and start a foundation to help people in need. “We’re infinitely thankful to our sponsor, who knocked on our door and changed our lives.” Sixto and Berta Barrientos | California Living the dream: “Money doesn’t bring you peace, but it leaves you about a block away from happiness,” Sixto says, smiling. He and Berta no longer labor long hours in the fields to provide for their family. “Before, we were limited in what we could buy the kids (Sandra, 20; Katherine, 17; Cynthia, 13; and Michelle, 6),” Berta says. “Now we can shop to our hearts’ content!” Looking to the future: Sending the girls to college is on the couple’s radar. So is buying a house. “I’ve always dreamed of owning a big ranch,” says Sixto, whose “biggest satisfaction has been being able to take care of my mom. We paid a price to get here, but it was worth it. Before, we didn’t have hope. Now we have results to prove our dreams can come true.” Read more about each new Emerald qualifier at PAGE 62 | AchieveMagazine.com > Achievement > Emerald Stories Carmen and Francisco Baez | Dominican Republic Living the dream: Former owners of an office supply company, Carmen saw quality time as a benefit of owning an Amway™ business. Francisco, who’d spent a decade teaching theater, saw “that I could get back to what I really enjoyed doing: working with people” and motivating them to work together to achieve their dreams. The couple also appreciate having time to spend with their boys, Wendell (13) and Wilmer (10). “Here we have everything,” he says. Looking to the future: “We want to contribute to society by helping more people understand the principles and values we’ve learned through our Amway business,” Francisco says. With their sights set on Diamond, he and Carmen “will be able to keep helping our parents, assure that our children not lack anything, and travel the world.” Pooran and Amla Benny | Trinidad Living the dream: Pooran and Amla were living paycheck to paycheck and renting when they learned about the Amway business opportunity. Today they own a home, are free from their jobs (she was a teacher; he worked for the government), and enjoy traveling. They also have the peace of knowing “our daughters (all IBOs) will never have to worry where the next dollar is coming from. We’ve created a legacy for them,” Amla says. Looking to the future: Not only do they hope to see Europe and Australia someday, the Bennys also want to make a positive mark on many lives. “The most important thing we can do is lay a foundation for people to understand the principles of the Amway business,” Pooran says. “We are designed to dream, to succeed – to overcome, to become.” Emmanuel Chan and Jinling Zhen* | New York Living the dream: “There are so many positives about owning an Amway business,” Emmanuel says. “The best thing is being your own boss. Another is meeting new people and seeing new places. Your business is always evolving. The financial rewards are great, too! I don’t think there’s another business like it,” he says with a laugh. Looking to the future: Emmanuel and Jinling are looking forward to starting a family. “It’s hard to envision where we’ll be in five years” because so much has happened, including getting married, he says. “Five years ago, I thought I’d be finishing college and working (my job) at the jewelry firm.” Jinling’s been able to quit her job, too, and fulfill a lifelong dream: opening a wedding store. Javier and Silvia Chavez | California Living the dream: When Javier, a trucker, was injured in a bad accident, “we were at Platinum,” says Silvia. “We were already getting regular checks from our Amway business, and we never stopped getting them.” That safety net helped Javier focus on his recovery, which took years. “We’ve learned we have to live for today, plan for tomorrow, and plan for the future,” Silvia says. Looking to the future: All four of their children are active in the business. “We love spending time with them and the grandkids,” Javier says. “Knowing we’ll be able to travel with them as much as we want makes me happy,” adds Silvia, who also regularly visits Mexico to check in on her parents. Trips to the Holy Land, Spain, and Brazil top their list of dream vacations. The average monthly Gross Income for “active” IBOs was $202. Approximately 46% of all IBOs were active. *Not pictured. | PAGE 63 RECOGNITION César and Jeovanny Encarnacion | Dominican Republic Living the dream: “It’s not just about having more time and money, but about being able to actually dream,” Jeovanny says of the liberation they’ve felt since starting their Amway™ business – and leaving their various jobs. “We didn’t know how (to dream) when César got up at 4 a.m. and home at midnight. This business gives you opportunities you can’t buy, like seeing the world, which takes money and time.” Looking to the future: César and Jeovanny delight in spending time with their sons, César Jr. (17), Daniel (14), and Moisés (8). “Now we can support their dreams as well as the dreams of others,” she says. Adds César, “I love helping and there are so many who need help.” He hopes to start a foundation someday to aid that work. Nandini and Rajesh Krishnamurthy | California Living the dream: Rajesh went from a job in software engineering to part-time consulting. Nandini left her job in IT recruiting and says, “Now I stay home and raise our 3-year-old son, Vaibhav Rajesh. Amway is the only business opportunity where dreams matter more than the skills you bring to the business. As long as you have the desire and are willing to learn and work hard, you can build this business.” Looking to the future: “The prospect of traveling more excites us,” says Rajesh. “We want to empower people around the world to succeed.” Currently, that includes people in the U.S., India, Mexico, and Australia. “We also want to be the best role model for our son,” adds Nandini. Helping kids with special needs is another priority. “If we can change one life for the better, then we will be blessed,” she says. Yue-Ying Li | California Living the dream: Yue-Ying’s Amway business is the perfect fit with her love of travel and helping people. An acupuncturist and M.D. trained in Chinese medicine, she believes “the best doctor is not the one who knows how to deal with disease. The best doctor is the one who knows how to prevent it. And ® nutrition plays a big part in that.” NUTRILITE nutritional supplements are just what this doctor orders! Looking to the future: “I want to continue growing my business so I can help more people.” Sharing the benefits of the products is rewarding. However, YueYing derives the greatest satisfaction from helping people “discover their gifts and abilities” through business ownership. “I also want to travel more, because living in L.A. is stressful.” She unwinds by “getting out in nature.” Xiao Guang Feng and Jian Li | Nevada Living the dream: Jian enjoys the one thing his traditional businesses could never give him: time to spend with his young children, Tiffany (11) and Sabrina (9). (Sons Tyrone and Horace are grown.) “Our Amway business has changed everything,” Xiao Guang says. “The environment and help from our mentors has made my husband kinder, happier.” They also enjoy traveling as a family and sharing the business wherever they go. Looking to the future: “We love to travel as a family. We’re looking forward to seeing Australia, New Zealand, and South America,” he says. “We also love talking to people and sharing the business wherever we go. A lot of people have dreams, but don’t know how to achieve them. We want to share what’s worked for us. I see big returns in the future!” PAGE 64 | Fabby and Alex Llanos | Florida Living the dream: “We’ve been blessed to see a wonderful opportunity in our Amway™ business – to have a better lifestyle, one we can share with others,” Fabby says. The key to their success: having upline mentors. Counting them as close friends? “That’s priceless,” she says. When she was laid off from investment banking and Alex quit his job, “they helped us see this business was our job.” Looking to the future: “It’s beautiful helping others grow through the same challenges you once faced,” says Alex, a former store manager. He, Fabby, son Kevin (15), and daughter Katherine (11) are looking forward to buying a house with a pool and a ranch where they can take their team to ride horses. More precious than realizing their own dreams, however, is “helping others’ dreams come true.” Martha and Jairo López | Florida Living the dream: “The personal growth we’ve undergone through our Amway business is definitely the greatest reward,” states Jairo, who has learned to be more disciplined. “We are two totally different people today!” Martha agrees. “I surprise myself sometimes!” she says, referring to her increasing patience. “We can help change thousands of lives, including our kids’. That’s the greatest thing to me.” Looking to the future: Jairo and Martha look forward “to all the good things in life” and sharing their abundance with others. “Travel is my passion,” she says. “On my billboard of dreams is first Peter Island, and then Paris and Venice.” Jairo can’t wait to surprise his parents with a trip to Argentina. And he’s determined to create a new pin level to meet his ambitious goals: Intercontinental Triple Founders Crown Ambassador. Darren and Julie Mulliniks | Virginia Living the dream: “It’s crazy how far we’ve come!” says Julie, who was in college, waitressing, and newly married to Darren when they started their Amway business. Darren left banking and went into landscaping to have more control over his time. Julie was able to pick and choose subbing assignments as a teacher. “This business has taught us to work toward our goals,” she says. Looking to the future: “We want to reach Diamond so we can both be full time in the business,” Darren says. “We’re also looking forward to becoming parents and being able to work from home.” He and Julie envision building a house on a lake. “We’ve made a lot of friends in this business,” she says, “and we want them to experience the same things we have.” Mikhail and Olga Okunev | California Living the dream: Newly arrived from Russia with their seven children, Mikhail and Olga started their Amway business so they could buy the products their family had become familiar with in Russia. “It’s the most amazing feeling to help someone out with the products,” Olga says. When their jobs (hers in child care, his in construction) foundered, “We decided to build the business full time.” Looking to the future: “Life today is like a fairy tale!” Olga exclaims. “It’s not a struggle. We can sleep in and spend time with our children and grandchildren.” The couple’s goals now include helping their children (ages 17 to 29) become established and fulfilling their parents’ dreams. They’re happy they can help so many Slavic immigrants through their business. “We also want to help the people in Russia, especially orphans.” | PAGE 65 RECOGNITION Edmund and Lucy Wong | Ontario Living the dream: “Because of our Amway™ business, we were able to quit our jobs in our late 40s,” Edmund says. “We loved our jobs (he was a project manager, Lucy a radio broadcasting producer), but we love Amway more.” Not only has it given them a sense of control over their time and finances, it’s also brought great meaning to their lives. Looking to the future: “We want to keep helping others succeed and expanding our group,” Edmund says. He and Lucy enjoy sharing what they’ve learned about health and wellness through presentations they offer to the community. “We have the best products that can help people maintain their health and well-being,” he believes. The couple also enjoy traveling, tai chi, and time spent with their grown sons and golden retriever, Kaylee.
