Typical stages of P. lutzi: A-B)Macrogametocytes C) Microgametocyte D) Meront ; Bar = 10 μm. Main Characters: P. lutzi, is similar to P. relictum , but these species can be distinguished because: 1) P. lutzi predominantly tend to cluster its pigment granules to the margin of the parasite, in meronts and gametocytes (mostly observe in macrogametocytes) 2) the number of merozoits in mature meronts is fewer on P. lutzi (6-26). 3) the genetical distance, base on a fragment of 489 bp of Cyt b and mitochondrial genome (mtDNA). Specimen Category: Blood smear and DNA Distribution in Colombia: Bogotá, D.C., Chingaza NNP, Los Nevados NNP, probably on low lands. Altitudinal distribution: 475-3100 m asl Global distribution: Brazil, Venezuela, Pathology: Lucena, (1939) and Gabaldon & Ulloa (1976), reported a benign infection, with accumulation of pigment granules on spleen and liver, but recently Dinhopl et al., (2015) found mortality on birds infected by molecular Cyt b lineages similar to P. lutzi. Vectors: unknown. Bibliography: Mantilla et al.,(2013), González et al.,(2015) (click on each to last name to go to the original paper). Gabaldón, A., & G. Ulloa. 1976.
