Having poured all of his confusion and frustration over being removed unexpectedly
from the drum stool of Placebo in 2007 into the eponymous 2010 debut album of
his own project Love Amongst Ruin, Steve Hewitt lived through an emancipating
process, a mission to prove his musical worth not just to the legions of Placebo
fans avidly waiting to see what he’d do next but also to himself. The succinct yet
wide-reaching ‘Love Amongst Ruin’, with it’s twists of New Order/Depeche Mode
electronica, Can/Kasabian motorika, Cure atmospherics and hardcore Metallica riffs,
had firmly positioned him as an alt-rock contender in his own right.
The title track of the new album ‘Lose Your Way’ is a dark, confident slab of rock noir
at its finest, whereas ‘Menace Ballad’ brings a swarm of psychedelic intrigue to a
track that will win over fans of experimental post-rock.
It’s an album that embraces finely wrought atmospheres and artfully coiled emotion
on the lush Cure melancholy and loss of ‘Oh God’, ‘Watch Myself’ and ‘Paper Tigers’,
as well as the flamethrower fuzzrock of ‘Swan Killer’.

“He’s taking my job away. Amazing!”
– Herbie Hancock
“If the word “genius” still means anything, it applies to this prodigy”
- Downbeat
“Technically fluent and harmonically astute”
- The New York Times
“Magnificent not only for the child’s virtuosity - plenty of prodigies have
outsized chops - but for the maturity and perception he brought”
- Jazz Times
Jazz piano wunderkind Joey Alexander will release his highly anticipated debut
album ‘My Favorite Things’, produced by Grammy-winning producer Jason
Olaine, on the Harlem based label Motéma Music. The album finds Alexander
playing everything from Coltrane to Rodgers and Hammerstein with a deft touch,
adventurous spirit and improvisatory verve. Accompanying Joey on the album
are bassist Larry Grenadier (Stan Getz, Brad Mehldau, Pat Metheny) and 2-time
Grammy-winning drummer Ulysses Owens Jr. (Kurt Elling, Wynton Marsalis,
Christian McBride) as well as three talented young players from the New York
scene: Russell Hall (bass), Sammy Miller (drums) and trumpeter Alphonso Horne
(LCJO, Marcus Roberts).
Driven by Alexander’s imagination, sophisticated arrangements and dazzling
playing, ‘My Favorite Things’ is soulful and joyful. It is also statement of intent, a
compelling introduction to a budding young leader, performer and composer, who
plays with power and elation. Born on the island of Bali in the city of Denpassar in
2003, Alexander first encountered a piano at the age of six, and was immediately
able to pick out the melody of Thelonious Monk’s “Well, You Needn’t” and other
jazz standards from his father’s record collection by ear. Despite no formal jazz
education, Joey rose quickly in the Indonesian jazz scene and beyond. In 2013
he was featured at jazz festivals in both Jakarta and Copenhagen, and won the
international improvisation contest in Odessa, Ukraine – besting over 200 adult
contestants. He now counts Wynton Marsalis, Herbie Hancock, Billy Crystal and
Bill Clinton among his many fans.

European tour dates to be announced soon; appearances
at all major Finnish Jazz festivals in the summer will be used
for interviews for international media
Up north in Finland, in the land of the hottest Saunas, longest winters
and saddest Tangos, you can also find one of the coolest and most
distinguished saxophonist/composers on the Jazz-scene today. 39-yearold Timo Lassy, acclaimed as a “rising star” in US-jazz-bible Downbeat,
now hits us with “Love Bullet”, his fifth album and his most accomplished
studio-work to date. “The entire album is definitely more personal than
all my previous work”, he says of this sophisticated collection of ten
instrumental originals. “It tells a story of the past few colorful years in
my life. No need to rush this time around, I hope.” Having worked with
an international all-star cast ranging from the Italian style-master Nicola
Conte to US-Jazz-vocalist José James and recently extending his talents
into the art of film-music by composing for the soundtrack of the movie
“Moomins on the Riviera” a.o., Lassy created this mysteriously soulful and
somewhat “cineastic” music with his working band in mind, an ensemble
that was dubbed “one of Europe’s sharpest bands” by The Sunday Times
in the UK. Their sonic base is in the 1950′s/60′s hard bop, Soul Jazz and
Latin Jazz tradition, but the masterful execution and the progressive vision
of all of the group’s players places the music firmly in the 21st century. Like
the films of fellow Finn Aki Kaurismäki, it exudes an energy and a feeling at
once markedly timeless, traditional and tirelessly forward-looking. „Quality
swinging jazz with a difference!“, as Gilles Peterson calls it. As a character,
Timo Lassy embodies the rare kind of charisma of a contemporary jazz
star, whose humility always marks him as a team player. “I could not have
given these songs to anyone else to play except my longtime associates
Teppo, Antti, ‚Gorgeous‘ (aka Georgios) and “Mamba””, Timo Lassy says.
“We have recorded five albums and played many a gig together. It‘s all
about friendship, enormous trust and respect. It‘s not always so simple to
say: but I love you all.” Which is just about as cool as it gets …

If seeing is believing, hearing may just be feeling. One look at
Socalled, the cultural character from Canada will make you
believe he is a true original. But take a listen to his new album
“Peoplewatching” and you will feel that there is so much more than
meets the eye to this pianist, producer, composer, arranger, rapper,
singer, journalist, photographer, filmmaker, magician, cartoonist
and puppet maker. The subject of “The Socalled Movie”, a feature
documentary produced by the National Film Board of Canada, the
38-year-old has been making records and touring the world for
over a decade by now. Having worked with Chilly Gonzales, Mocky,
David Krakauer, Fred Wesley, The Mighty Sparrow, Matisyahu and
Killah Priest, he whose passport reads Joshua David Charles
Dolgin but is better known as Socalled, is an incredibly intelligent
and funny free agent in his own cosmos, a space and time where
Yiddish folk-melodies, Jazz attitude and Hip Hop collide to create
a universally loved modern amalgam.
After several solo albums including, The Socalled Seder and 2007’s
“Ghettoblaster”, which featured the breakout hits, “The Good Old
Days” and “You Are Never Alone”, it was time for “Sleepover” in
2013. “Sleepover” featuring over 30 incredible guests, is the further

articulation of a mission to cross boundaries, to mix old and new
sounds, acoustic and electric instruments, digital and analog
recording techniques, while exploring different cultures and styles,
all in the service of creating something catchy, smart, hilarious,
emotional and timeless. Now get ready for “Peoplewatching”,
our favorite Super-Nerd’s newest release to hit stores in May
2015. As usual (or rather not), the album works on many levels:
songs like “Extra Ordinary”, “Bootycaller”, the Edwin-Starryinstrumental “Curried Soul 2.0” or the title track have irresistible
hooks, great grooves and fantastic melodies, but the true fun lies in
the lyrics. Socalled raps “I’m a door-to-door Wikipedia salesman”
or ironically becomes the voice of the oppressors in the biblical
opening track: “David and Golitah, Jonah and the whale, it’s not
enough that I succeed, everyone else must fail”. And then come the
award winning videos (“Ouncies, not Grammys”), and Socalled’s
irresistible live-shows … you just have to see it to believe it and
hear it to feel it, of course.

A beautiful and colorful beast that jumps from melancholia to upbeat

rock songs with an alternative tinge. Longtime FTB supporters and
new fans alike will gladly lap up “As The Camp Burns”!

TIPP DES MONATS!
BEAUTIFUL CLASSICAL MUSIC FOR THE MOST SPECIAL OF DAYS
•
•
musical accompaniments of the finest quality for church, registry office and receptions
•
high-class performers: José Carreras, the famous boys’ choir from Tölz, Claudio Arrau,
Vienna Philharmonic and many others
favourite pieces suitable for weddings, by Bach, H
andel, Mozart, Mendelssohn,
Chopin and many others
Without music a wedding is quite incomplete! From the arrival at the registry office or in the church, the background
music for the festivities that follow, and to the married couple’s first waltz or the cutting of the wedding cake it is the
music that lends the proper atmosphere of solemnity, joy and emotionality to this event, where tradition and formality
are high priorities. The 26 pieces in this compilation cover all aspects and help to establish the mood for the great
day in a relaxed way; and through the choice of music perhaps offer some suggestions. The declaration of love, the
wedding ceremony and the exchange of rings are deeply moving moments that for centuries have been expressed in
music giving the whole proceedings a special brilliance.
As well as works that are universally known and loved other pieces can be heard that are equally tailored to that most
special of days though somewhat aside from the mainstream. The artists performing on these recordings are top-class
musicians such as José Carreras, Kathleen Ferrier, Alfred Deller, the Tölzer Knabenchor (the boys choir from Bad Tölz),
Claudio Arrau, the Vienna Philharmonic, the Royal Philharmonic orchestra and many others.

Georgia Anne Muldrow is a seeker and truth-teller.
The words on her first rap album – produced entirely
by Chris Keys – balance a beautiful delivery with
brutal honesty. These are the honest confessions of a
mother who refuses to turn a blind eye to immediate
and ancestral misdeeds. Her rhymes are conscious,
but more importantly, they speak to our deeper
conscience.
The prophetic soul artist offers a singular voice, yet
belongs to a storied lineage. Listening to this record,
you can hear the echoes of past oracles: Billie Holiday,
Alice Coltrane, Erkyah Badu and Lauryn Hill. But the
wisdom and narrative reflect Muldrow’s most personal
revelations.
ALSO AVAILABLE ON VINYL!
Muldrow uses music as a vessel to inspire hope
and propel people towards a better future. Beyond
identifying worldly inequities, this record details
one woman’s quest to improve things for herself,
her children, and everyone else. It’s about finding
universal truths, while staying true to one’s essence
– transcending the hate and slowly starting to heal.

Seven Birds, Spencer Bohren’s tenth release
on Solingen, Germany-based Valve Records is
something of a departure for him. Each of his previous
albums for the label exhibit a unique personality or
perspective, but on Seven Birds, Spencer passes
the production duties to Valve’s Reinhard Finke and
utilizes four musician friends from Germany, and the
results are explosive! Comprised of nine original
songs, two traditional pieces, and two compositions
from songwriter pals, the album moves from deep and
atmospheric to light-hearted, and from dark and edgy
to near comedy, yet somehow manages to stand as a
singular statement. Spencer Bohren’s Seven Birds is
an exciting, creative musical journey you won’t want

Los Angeles quartet Northern American have announced
their debut album, Modern Phenomena, which will arrive
May 18 on Heist Or Hit Records – and premiered the
video for the single, “Elysian”, via Les Inrocks. The
follow up to the band’s 2013 EP Happiness Hungover,
was recorded at Red Rockets Glare studio in Santa
Monica with producer Raymond Richards (Local Natives)
and mastered by Mark Chalecki (Local Natives/Avi
Buffalo/Islands). There is a natural energy that flows from
Northern American, capturing the awe-inspiring beauty
of the Los Angeles landscape through which all these
lives intertwine.
Nate Paul (guitar/vocals) and Shane Alch (keys) met
in high school, immediately finding a kinship in their
common love of music. The two moved to Los Angeles,
joining forces with Augusto Vega (bass) and Bruno
Calenda (drums), setting up a studio in Chinatown,
writing and rehearsing nearly daily ever since. Whilst
most artists have their own roles to play within their band,
Northern American is a fully collaborative project with all
band members contributing lyrics, melody, and rhythm
to the process. The four began performing regularly
and built a loyal local following in the City of Angels,
with tastemaker blog, Buzzbands.LA stating, “There’s a
new rock quartet in town whose sophisticated pop may
include your breezy summer melody.”
Happiness Hungover caught the ears of Heist Or Hit

Singer, songwriter, classically trained pianist and
acclaimed actor Alicia Witt (Justified, House of Lies) has
confirmed the release of her first full-length studio album
Revisionary History, out April on Compass Records.
Ben Folds teamed up with Alicia to produce REVISIONARY
HISTORY, an album of songs that deal in themes of
heartbreak, loyalty, and the amazing power that comes
with finding one’s own voice and using it. The album
was years in the making, with some of nine Alicia Witt
originals dating back to the mid-’00s. With plenty of time
spent selecting and honing each song in concert, Alicia
headed to Folds’ Nashville studio where she recorded
the album in two, week-long chunks in the spring and
late fall of 2013. The album features Folds on backing
vocals as well as on drums, bass, percussion, electric

guitar and more. Multi-instrumentalist Joe Pisapia also
lends acoustic guitar, pedal steel, backing vocals, and
additional percussion.
“This record is probably the most personal thing that
I’ve put out,” says Witt, who released a self-titled EP in
2009 and the full-length Live at Rockwood in 2012. Both
releases were made between parts in films and on TV
(including a recurring role on this season of Showtime’s
House of Lies) in an acting career that began with her
debut in the David Lynch sci-fi classic Dune in 1984 when
Alicia was seven. For all the autobiographical touches on
REVISIONARY HISTORY, the collection is one of deeply
relatable songs. The reflective piano ballad “Friend”
opens the album with Alicia sifting through feelings of
attraction for someone she knows should be just a pal
and not a lover. The aching vocal showcase “Consolation
Prize” pairs torchy piano with taut electric guitar accents
as Alicia muses over the ways in which we edit our pasts
to fit the present.

Twenty-two years after he was introduced to the world
with „Send Them“ — the landmark left-field 12-inch that
launched the Solesides label b/w DJ Shadow‘s „Entropy“
— Lyrics Born has made some of the most organic, original,
and adventurous music of his entire career.
While touring with Latyrx last, he made time for an extended
stay in a place that he‘s long admired: America‘s first and last
real-deal music town, New Orleans. LB stocked up on pads
and pens, rented a cozy house three blocks from the famous
Maple Leaf Bar, and booked two weeks‘ worth of sessions
with Galactic guys Robert Mercurio and Ben Ellman at their
Uptown studio. Then they let it rip. Funk has always been a
part of what Lyrics Born does — his unique vocal swagger
dishes out melody and rhyme with equal aplomb. But never

has he evoked the idiom so directly or made an album that
feels so alive. He turned the production over entirely (also
a first) to his NOLA colleagues, giving them space to do
what they do best, and him the freedom to write. Mercurio
and Ellman wrangled a host of talent to execute the vision:
Trombone Shorty, Ivan Neville, the Preservation Jazz Hall

Amidst all that quirk, soul, and raw talent, LB was reborn

Imbued with love, honesty and selflessness. “The
Good Fight” is virtuosic in its musicality, direct it its
language, and infinitely relatable.
For Oddisee, “The Good Fight” is about living fully
as a musician without succumbing to the traps of
hedonism avarice and materialism. It’s music that
yields an intangible feeling; the sacral sound of an
organ whine, brass horns, or a cymbal crash. It’s
a mediation on our capacity to love and the bonds
binding us together.
Oddisee’s production simmers it it’s own orchestra
lgumbo. You sense he’s really a jazzman in different

Gold Dust is a bold move for The Dirty Youth, long time
darlings of the alternative press and an underground
phenomenon in the UK. ‘Gold Dust’ sees the Cardiff’s
five piece pushing the limits of the rock genre and
setting their sights on mainstream stages. Gold Dust’s
influences are bold and encompasses huge guitars,
slick production and in singer Danni Monroe, a voice
that nods towards Taylor Momsen, Lizzi Hale and
Hayley Williams.
As a lead track from Gold Dust, ‘The One’ unashamedly
oozes commercial potential. Now is their time to
follow in the footsteps of Enter Shikari, Fall Out Boy,
Mallory Knox, and Bring Me The Horizon, to step out
of the darkness and in to the spotlight. Since forming
in 2008, The Dirty Youth have gained over 5.5 million
Youtube views, graced stages at Download Festival
3 times, most recently taking to the second stage
with ease to a crowd of over 10,00, supported Bruce
Springsteen at Hyde Park, and were invited to support
KORN on their European tour after KORN guitarist
Munky heard The Dirty Youth cover of the Skrillex
remix “Narcissistic Cannibal”.
The Dirty Youth feature the songwriting talents of multi
instrumentalist Matt Bond. Who has played keyboard
and piano for many artists, including Bullet For My
Valentine. This March The Dirty Youth support Fozzy,
fronted by best selling author and WWE superstar
Chris Jericho, who personally invited the band on to

From promising beginnings - playing festivals such as
Reading & Leeds, touring and sharing the stage with
such bands as Enter Shikari, Mallory Knox, Deaf Havana
and Neck Deep, their last release, 7 track EP, ‘Hard
Truths’, received rave reviews and was championed by
many radio/TV stations, magazines and press.
How was it then that Attention Thieves, tipped by many
as the next UK rock band to breakthrough, disappeared
quietly into the background?
The truth is a week before the release of, ‘Hard Truths’,
the band’s label went bust on them and they were
promptly dropped by their management, due to the
massive campaign debt the label had left them with.
Finally and perhaps most importantly, the band had also
been dealing with their own demons.
The four piece found the chain of events difficult to deal
with, working so hard for so many years to get within
spitting distance of their dreams, only for them to spiral
away and out of control. To be capable of touring whilst
shouldering a slipped disk, singer/guitarist, Alex Green,
had become further reliant on self-medication to deal
with the pain which resulted in addiction. It all came to a
boiling point when he had a heart attack, aged 27, during
the recording of their debut album, ‘Year of the Jackal’. A
complete lifestyle alteration was needed, and fast… for
some member’s it would prove lifesaving.
The new look Attention Thieves completed the album
that almost never saw the light of day and it is by a
country mile, their strongest material to date. ‘Year of the
Jackal’ is a genuine triumph, both musically and subjectmatter wise, littered with passion and irresistible hookladen choruses.

It’s only been a few months since Strange Names
landed in New York City, but the time for this daring
pop trio has most definitely come. This triumvirate
of twenty-somethings—Fletcher Aleckson, Francis
Ximenez and Liam Benzvi—is releasing ‘Use Your
Time Wisely,’ a firecracker debut LP jammed with
energetic, angular, romantic songs that sound at once
ageless and completely contemporary.
The band came together while Ximenez and Benzvi
were students at the University Of Minnesota; they
were each part of other groups but ditched them to
play together. The pair cycled through a series of
bassists and drummers, until after their fifth show
Aleckson approached them and said, „Francis, you
know what the problem is here. Give me a call when
you want to upgrade.“ With that, the group cemented
itself as a three-piece and one of the Twin Cities’ most
talked-about acts until, with an eye toward bigger
things—and graduation over and done with—the band
picked up and moved to New York. While Strange
Names’ rambunctious sound and sly take on modern
life is completely of the moment, the band, which
came together amidst the close-knit Minneapolis
music scene, can’t help but see their first record as
something of a second chance.
What they ended up with was a collection of TK
driving songs that are deceptively simple, raucously
compelling and defiantly youthful. The guys strive to
echo the inclusive vibe of the new wave bands they
love, groups like the B-52s, Human League and the
Talking Heads that didn’t leave anyone out of their
party. “We’re always fighting the avant-garde within
us,” Ximenez says with a smile. “We’re trying to find a
middle ground where the music sounds like us but is
still accessible.”

National Socialism had devised its own notion of the
value of German art and culture. This was ruthlessly put
into practice when the Nazis took over power in 1933.
The more than 175 recorded musical items on these 10
CDs relate to the shocking consequences due to that
“cleansing”.
The burning of the Reichstag (7th April) provided the pretext
for the prosecution of all who held other political opinions,
for the burning of books (10th May) whose authors were
on the index of disfavoured and banned writers, for the
law that amended entry to the civil service (7th April) that
excluded all non-Aryans and led to wholesale dismissals
of Jews, especially in orchestras, the administration,
among singers, conductors and instrumentalists. By
means of the exhibitions “Degenerate Art” (Munich 1937)
and “Degenerate Music” (Düsseldorf 1938) art and artists
who were now to have no place in Nazi Germany were
pilloried.
The people concerned either saved themselves by fleeing
abroad or were arrested, deported to concentration
camps and executed. With the “annexation” of Austria the
process repeated itself there, and in every other country
invaded by German troops.
The compilation on these 10 CDs provides examples from

“Listening to an artist like Yehudi makes even an atheist
believe in God.”
(George Bernhard Shaw)
Yehudi Menuhin is one of the great performers of the 20th
century, and his name is synonymous with the art of violin
playing. Even as a child he astounded the musical world
with an intellectual maturity and stylistic sureness previously
unknown. From the time of his New York début in 1926 at
which the star violinists Jascha Heifetz, Mischa Elman and
Max Rosen were present, and the legendary appearance in
the Carnegie Hall the following year, he was regarded as
music’s “golden boy” – a creature sent by the gods. He
was then just eleven years old but could now include such
personalities as Albert Schweitzer, Fritz Busch and Arturo
Toscanini among his admirers. The public worshipped him,
and music critics singled him out as their darling. Menuhin
was presented with the famous Prince Khevenhüller
Stradivari for his twelfth birthday by the banker Henry
Goldman and one after the other conquered the great
concert halls of music centres on both sides of the Atlantic,
becoming a legend even as a young man.
The recordings on these two CDs are unambiguous proof of
these statements, and may well rekindle the keen argument
to decide which recordings are the best, the early ones
or those from the 1950s and 60s. They are recordings of
concertos by three composers to whose works Menuhin
formed a special relationship, namely Bach, Beethoven
and Bartók. This compilation, known as the “Three Bs
concert” in reference to the legendary concert in the Berlin
Phiharmonie, underlines the 1953 concert critique in “The
New York Times” which maintained, “ Whatever personal
problems he may have had with his artistry, he has overcome
them”.

Plain and simple “Ray” was the title of a film biography in
which Jamie Foxx played the musician Ray Charles. Just
as in the case of Elvis Presley the forename suffices and
you know what we are talking about: about first-class songs
from an excellent musician presented in this box on, believe
it or not, 17 records made between 1957 and 1962.
Success did not come easily to Ray Charles Robinson,
his brother was drowned, his mother died early and he
himself became blind in his boyhood years. Later in life
he had problems with drugs. But being taught piano and
his enormous talent helped him along the road to an
international career. In 1963 he was considered the most
popular artist in the USA.
It is immaterial whether his music is stamped as Blues,
Jazz or Soul. His famous and energy-packed songs such
as “What’d I Say” are engrained in the listener’s ear, “I got
a woman” by Ray Charles was covered by Elvis for his first
record.
Just how versatile Ray was as a singer and pianist is shown
by his “Modern Sounds In Country And Western Music”:
the record was regarded at its issue as a break in style.
A black musician interpreted in his way the music of the
whites! The LP was nevertheless a huge success and the
breakthrough for both ethnic groups achieved. Why Ray
Charles was respectfully called “The genius” will be obvious
from listening to these CDs. Let the good times roll!

Did anyone ever claim that crooning and sentimentality
were no fun? Of course they can be fun. The proof is
in these songs that tug at your heartstrings, and are
sung by many international stars. The 10 CDs form
a kind of counter-type to our erotically-charged box
“Sex, Drugs and Alcohol”. This new issue is totally
family friendly, and full of romance, longing, lovesickness and the drama that goes with it. Amazingly
the otherwise so wild Rock’n’Roll era gave us also
many unforgettable love songs, which the young Elvis
could so captivatingly and longingly sing even on
his first LPs. He is represented in this box along with
numerous other Rock’n’Roll singers, and practically
all the famous names took up the issues of heartbreak
and lovesickness in the course of their careers: Paul
Anka, Nat King Cole and Dean Martin, Connie Francis,
Peggy Lee and Marilyn Monroe – the list is endless.
When all is said and done love is the most beautiful
and strongest feeling known to humanity and these
CDs provide eminently suitable music for it, whether it
be as it then was while petting in a drive-in cinema or
today with a mobile music player on the balcony or on
the beach. So: on with the CDs, immerse yourselves
in memories and sing along! As Elvis urged in his hit of
55 years ago “It’s now or never”.

The versatility of Fritz Wunderlich, a singer
extraordinary in every way, was never more clearly
discernible than on this collection of 10 CDs.
Many of the recordings, some of them never before
issued, go back to his early years when the young
tenor financed his studies by appearing at villagehall dances and also at that time singing baroque
arias, masses and cantatas, experiences that later
produced that wonderful ability to render every kind
of vocal music in its right and proper style.
So you will find on these CDs, as well as operetta
melodies from, for example Die Dubarry, Die lockende
Flamme and the Zigeunerbaron film version with
Wunderlich’s sung couplet Schweinespeck als idealer
Lebenszweck (An ideal life I’ve made, a swineherd
I’m by trade), numerous radio recordings with arias
and scenes from opera as well as rarities such as
Triptychon by Hermann Reutter, Frank Martin’s In
terra pax and ancient songs from the collection of
Arnt von Aich.
Especially interesting will be Die Schweigsamer Frau
(“The silent woman”) in excerpts from the Munich
opera, the TV version and the Teatro Colón in Buenos
Aires.

This tribute to the great French baroque composer JeanPhilippe Rameau offers famous recordings and genuine
rarities! Marcelle Meyer, one of the most celebrated
20th century pianists and as brilliant as she is versatile,
recorded Rameau’s complete works for piano and the
result created something of a sensation. Among the
other gems in this box can be found the first recording of
Hyppolyte et Aricie, the secular cantata Diane et Acréon
featuring the incomparable Hugues Cuenod, a complete
recording of the opera Platée, made at the Aix festival,
the ballet Les Indes galantes as well as the Six Concerts
en Sextuor. And last but not least a French doyenne of
ancient music – Nadia Boulanger – has something to say
that on no account should be missed. For this recording
of excerpts from different operas she has assembled her
favourite singers around her – the disc has cult status.
The recordings originated between 1942 and 1956.
Taking part, as well as those already mentioned, are
Hans Rosbaud, Roger Desormière, Maurice Hewitt,
Nicolai Gedda, Gérard Souzay, Michel Sénéchal, Irène
Joachim, Doda Conrad, Paul Derenne and many others.

Tchaikovsky is undoubtedly the best-loved of all
Russian composers. His uninterrupted popularity
and his international success are not least thanks
to his wonderful, sensually romantic ballet scores of
“Nutcracker”, “Sleeping Beauty”, and “Swan Lake”,
which we present in this birthday box of original
recordings from the 1950s. They are complete
recordings (or in the case of “Swan lake” only slightly
abridged versions) of outstanding artistic quality
resulting from the conducting excellence of Antal
Dorati (Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra) and Ernst
Ansermet (L’Orchestre de la Suisse Romande), both
Tchaikovsky specialists.
Both of the complete opera recordings Eugen Onegin
and “The Enchantress” are also typical Tchaikovsky
compositions, passionate, full of feeling, brilliant. The
stars of the Russian opera scene, among them Galina
Vishnevskaya, Sergei Lemeshev, Eugeni Byelov and
Ivan Petrov together with the chorus and orchestra
of the Bolshoi theatre, Moscow are superbly directed
by Boris Khaikin in a benchmark recording of Eugen
Onegin. “The Enchantress”, here in a 1954 recording
directed by Samuel Samodus is being rediscovered
as a “Russian Carmen” on the European stage.
And last but not least the pleasure of this wonderful
music will be further enhanced by the charming
original sleeves form the 1950s.
