The IBEG partner from Japan installed several thousand square meters of the Armaflor® turf
rollsods, pre-vegetated on a BesTec® eriosion control blanket type ESM-K/350.
These sods were delivered for an old dike of the Tenryugawa River which was constructed out of
mainly gravel with the intention to establish a vegetation on this construction due to the fact of the
construction material (gravel) failed all efforts to establish vegetation on these slopes.
There were different activities to introduce a green dike mainly with the following 4 species:
1.) Imperata cylindrica
2.) Zoysia japonica
3.) Polygonum cuspidatum
4.) Coreopsis lanceolata
The species Polygonum cuspidatum and Corepsis lanceolata are very inversive plants which finally
stopped the activities of the spread species Zoysia japonica due to the fact of the shadow which
was created by the first mentioned plants. So the seeding with these species was not successful
and again there were a lot of erosion problems on different areas where the vegetation failed.

The solution to settle this problem was the installation of pre-vegetated Armaflor® turf rollsods with
the BesTex® erosion control blanket type ESM-K/350. This blanket consits out of coir fibres
stitched with a top and a bottom PP-netting screen in combination with a special substrate.
Furthermore the species Imperata cylindrica was established at this dike which is a natural
Japanese grass and which is also resitant for dryer condition.
The growing of these species is quite slow. Therefore it must be mowed now only once or twice
instead of 3-4 times per year.

The main intention to establish vegetation to protect the dike against erosion by vegetation was
reached and also the maintenance costs were reduced for the investor in a significant way due to
lower maintenance activities.
For the first vegetation period the erosion control blanket was giving the erosion control protection.
From te second vegetation period the vegetation was without any further assistance able to
guarantee the erosion control for the whole surface of the dike.
