Mordechai Cubitt Cooke (1825 - 1914) was a self-taught naturalist and became the leading British mycologist after J. Berkeley. His „Illustrations“ remained for half a century the mycological work with the highest number of plates - surpassed then by Bresadola‘s Iconographia mycologica (1927-1933). The illustrations with coloured background were taken from nature by Cooke himself or copied from drawings by Berkeley, Broome, W. G. Smith or Massee. Here and here light browning on text-pages. London: Calder and Boyars 1973 117-183: 24 calligraphic plates John Cage (1912 - 1992) was an American composer, philosopher, poet, artist, and a keen amateur mycologist and mycophagist. He cofounded the New York mycological society and was interested in mushroom hunting until his old age. The Mushroom-book was published first in 1972, together with the mycologist Alexander H. Smith and the artist Lois Long. The limited large fomat edition combined Cage‘s writings on mushroom hunting, identification and cooking with mycological descriptions by Smith and lithographs by Long and Cage. This scarce second issue contains the text with calligraphed plates. The end-papers are printed after two lithos by Cage. His portrait with a mushoom-basket is on the back cover. Cordier Volbracht 427; Stafleu 1229; Uellner 284; Krieger 50-51; Nissen 404; Oberlé 726; Vicaire 211. - François Simon Cordier (1797-1874) was a French botanist and physician, who published a small book on fungi with 11 handcoloured lithographs in 1826 - a second edition followed in 1836. Many years later, at the age of 73, Cordier presented this considerably enlarged version with chromolithographed plates by Mademoiselle Delville-Cordier. Many phrases of the edition of 1826 are repeated verbatim, but the earlier editions are not mentioned. In 1876, after Cordier‘s death, the book was reissued with an new typography and pagination and called „fourth edition“ on the title. It is not clear if this refers to the editions since 1826, or to the different issues since 1870 (a „troisième tirage“ was distributed in 1874, cf. Stafleu). On page (v), Cordier dedicates the work to „Chrétien Henry Persoon, créateur de la science mycologique. Son Èlève réconnaissant ...“ This copy is inscribed by the author to Prof. Duchartre. Berolini: Formis Theophili Bruschcke 1818. Reprint Asher 1972 p (1-3), 4-32: plate Volbracht 576; Stafleu 1742; Uellner 441. A very beautiful work, created over a period of more than 40 years with an extraordinary effort. William Gilson Farlow was Professor for cryptogamic botany at Harvard University. He started this project in 1889 and engaged the naturalistic painter Joseph Brickham, who draw for him over a period of ten years about 303 fungi. Farlow then began to organise the complicate production of the chromolithographs. Later, many more illustrations were furnished by L. C. C. Krieger, who worked for Farlow from 1902 to 1911. Farlow died suddenly in 1919 - 103 illustrations for the book were ready, but only the introduction to the text. So Farlow‘s widow asked E. A. Burt in 1923 to complete the text - and the book finally came out in 1929. 500 copies were printed - the total cost of more than 50 000 Dollars would have been the equal of more than one million dollars in 1999 (cf. http://botlib.huh.harvard. edu/libraries/Farlowexhibit/creation.html) The book has beautiful plates in folio, 23 of them are by Krieger (cf. his Mushroom handbook, p 467). Hoffmann, an eminent mycologist (1819-1891), was the first to describe and illustrate clampconnections (Schnallen) in 1856. In the introduction of this major work, he calls it useless to publish more and more expensive colour-plate books showing the habit of fruiting bodies only. Hoffmann prefers, for the expansion of mycological knowledge, the description and presentation [124] HORAK, Egon Synopsis generum Agaricalium. (Die Gattungstypen der Agaricales). Asiatic Botany, 1938. - An extremely rare part of the original manuscript edition of Honzo Zufu, a botanical manual published in the early 19th century in Edo, now Tokyo. Iwasaki Tsunemasa (1786-1842), a botanist and superintendent of a botanical garden, collected and painted plants and fungi for more than 20 years. He then started publishing his manual of plants in 1818. Richard Rudolph described Iwasaki in a paper for the University of Kansas as a botanist presenting specimen artistically (http://liblamp. vm.ku.edu/spencer/exhibits/easternBotanicals/iwasakit sunemasas/3d1484v88no1rcamelliatsubaki_2.html). The illustrations with fine outlines and lively colouring show the influence of Chinese art of flower paintings. As the original manuscript edition was excessively rare, the manual was first printed in 1884 and then republished in a colour-printed woodblock edition from 1916 to 1922 (cf. Volbracht 959). Six of the 92 volumes (Nr. 52-57) depict fungi on more than 200 plates. In this small volume we have 16 double-folded leaves with 13 plates from volume 53 with watercolours of fungi and hand-written text. Popowitsch (1705-1774), was an eccentric Austrian linguistic researcher and natural scientist, born in the Steiermark. He discovered the world of fungi during his studies at the University of Graz, as a teacher and frequent traveller and during his time as a rather poor mushroompicker in Kremsmünster. He wrote the „Untersuchungen vom Meere“, during a following two-year stay in Regensburg. The book was intended as a translation and commentary of „De Columnis Herculis“ by the philologist Christian Gottlieb Schwarz (1675-1751) from Altdorf. But Popowitsch expands the project and discusses eloquently numerous oceanographical, philological or linguistic subjects and natural history observations and theories. Sharply, he criticises Linnées description of plants and cryptogames and delivers his own detailed observations on fungi. In fact, the „Untersuchungen“ include in part 3 („Nachlese von Zugaben“) on p. 351-398 the first lengthy treatise on mushrooms in German language, giving a short systematic survey and discussing many popular names of fungi. Nine years later, Popowitsch is quoted in Jacob Christian Schäffer‘s first mushroom book in German language, „Vorläufige Beobachtungen der Schwämme um Regensburg“ (1759). Popowitsch‘s own wish to publish a „Sammlung der Oberösterreichischen und Regensburgischen Schwämme“ with coloured plates by the artist Johann Daniel Meyer in Nürnberg was never realised. - The work is not mentioned in the books on the history of mycology by Lütjeharms, Ainsworth, Lazzari or Dörfelt. Of the botanical and mycological bibliographies, only Pritzel quotes it and remarks: „A p. 351-398 agitur de fungis, et merita Linnaei detrectantur“. Bound in oprivate cloth. 24 x 16,8 cm Euro 180 Volbracht 1754; Stafleu 9177; Uellner 1448. - Very rare, the first time we can offer a copy of this very elaborated work on fungi by Richon, a leading French mycologist of the 19th century. 2181 species from the Marne-department in the Champagne-region in north-eastern France are described. 10 plates depict the different types of fungi-famillies, two charts by Richons colleague Ernest Roze show different colours of spores of agarics. On pages 501-538, there is a listing of about 700 genera cited in the work, with the finely drawn spores of a type-species of each genus. Darker spores are hand-coloured in grey. Richon presents the book as the result of 30 years of mycological studies. He compiled the listing during an long illness. Inscribed by the author to Dr. Jolicour, with whom Richon worked in a „Comité antphylloxerique“, charged to fight the Phylloxera epidemic of wine grapes and other wine pests in France. Added is a handwritten letter of two pages by Richon to Jolicour. Nice copy in contemporary half-leather, slightly rubbed, gilt title on spine; 22,5 cm Euro 480 Sluzowce (Mycetozoa) monografia. Smith (18351917) was an English mycologist and fertile book illustrator) He was trained as a architect, but became a skilled wood engaver and was for a period of 40 years the chief illustrator of the Gardener‘s Chronicle. His interest for fungi was stimulated when he initially poisened himself and his family with Entoloma lividum. This guide is his first independent publication - two large folding sheets of coloured illustrations of edible and poisonous fungi, segmented and mounted on canvas. The explanatory booklet contains some marvellous first hand accounts of self-poisoning with different species of fungi. „About a quarter of an hour ago after luncheon I was immediately overtaken by a strange, nervous, gloomy, low-spirit feeling, quite new to me. Soon a severe headache added its charm to my feelings, and then swimming of the brain commenced, with violent pains in the stomach. I had now great difficulty to keep upon my legs at all; my senses appeared leaving me, and every object appeared to be moving with death-like stillness from side to side, up and down, and round and round. More dead than alive, I soon returned home, and was horrified to find two others (whom I had invited to partake of my repast) in exactly the same condition as myself. At this moment, and not before, I thought of Agarius fertilis. ...“ To my knowledge this is the second field-guide of fungi with folded coloured charts. [The first is: Hocquart & Perrot: Tableau comparatif des champignons comestibles et vénéneux qui se rencontrent le plus frequemment dans les bois. Paris: Langlois et Leclerc & Basset 1840]. Many of the new species were collected by himself in Chile, many sent to him by mycologists from different parts of the world. Ainsworth states in his Introduction to the History of Mycology that „contributions to a knowledge of the Leboulbeniomycetes are dominated by those made by Roland Thaxter from Harvard University over a period of more than forty years and especially by his monumental account published in five parts between 1896 and 1931“ (Ainsworth, p. 237).
