They can be don e with a standard top hat, collapsable or solid, or with an,similar type of hat that has a firm brim. No.I: The High Hat Twirl Begin by holding the back part of th e hat (the short part of the oval) by th e brim, with the fing e rs on top , outside of the brim, and the thumb fa cing toward the leg. The hand is slightly away from the side of the bod y down by the kne e. You will swing the hat from the kn ee upward ove r your h ea d , to a pos ition a t about 11 o'clock if you were looking at your body from the left side. During this swing, the brim of the hat will twirl once in a • clockwise direction around th e tips of the fingers . Hold the hat as in Figure I. Swing the hat up, not with a hard toss, but with enough momentum to cause it to be temporarily weightless at the top of th e swing. Don't let go at this point (Figur e 2), but do initiate the twirl. At this moment , the thumb flicks the hat so it begins to twirl around the fingers in a clockwise direction. Figure 3 shows the mid-point , and Figure 4 shows the hat as it completes th e trip around the fingers . You will notice there is a r eal knack to all the moves in this series. Thev will seem very difficult at first; bu.t with repeated effo rt they will become second nature . Also, in this particular move you will notice the hat does travel around the fingers , bringing the hat to rest in an off-centre positi on. You might want to compensate for this to begin with, but it re all y isn't a problem once you master the mo ve. Ac tually, it puts th e hat in prope r posi tion to pla ce directly on the head at the e nd of the twirl, as Lance Burton doe s to end his act . Some peopl e might find it easier to begin if the index finger , and n ot the thumb, is on the inside of the ha t to cause the hat to twirl a round th e middle finger. No.2: The Hand Flip Figure I shows the starting grip on th e hat , with the thumb along the inside of the brim, and the four fingers on the outside. The hat is held at the small part of the oval down by the side of the body. Twist the hand at the wrist in a clockwise direction, stopping at the point shown in Figure 2. Yo u wil l see the hat at its peak position on the flip before the hand has to let go of the hat , al lowing it to continue to fl o p around on its own momentum. ® Figures 3 and 4 show the hand has released the hat and regrabbed it after it has flipped around the hand once. At this point you will be holdin g the hat with the top facing the opposit.e di rection than when yo u start.ed. That is . th e fingers will be inside the cro wn of the hat, with the thumb on the outside of the brim. You ca n now continue with anothe r flip of th e hat that follows basically the same mot io n . 4 • Figures -! , 5 and 6 show how th e hat is caught and held after the fi r st Hand Flip , and th e wrist turning clockwise again until the position shown in Figure 5. At this point t he hand must once a gain let go of the hat, allowing it to continue its flip around the hand as a res ult of the momentum generated by the wrist turn. It is poss ib le, with a s li ght regrip on the position of the brim after the High Hat Twirl , you will be able to go straight into the two Hand Flips just described for a short sequence. As we often take the lo cal train to Stuttgart and would not want t o leave our unicycles behind, we are now faced with the problem of dete rmining th e correct fare for transporting the unicycles. Should we pay: a) according t o th e number of wheels; i.e . one bic yc le ticket for two unic yc les, or b) according to the number of saddles ; i.e. two bicycle ti ckets for two unic y - cles, or c) according to handlebars; i.e . nothing at all? The following points might be taken into consideration: a) Unicyclists travelling alone would in this case have to purchase half a ticket , whereas a child with a tricycle would require one and a half, or two if he or she were driving a pedalcar. b) In this case tandem riders would have to purchase two bicycle tickets , whereas a damaged bicycle with no saddle would require no ticket at al I. c) This is the answer we would of course prefer! We would be grateful if you could give us a speedy reply in order to avoid unnecessary complications at the ticket barrier. I have been performing this service on an informal basis for some time now and although it has not been extensively used it may well become worthwhile. For those of you who received information dearly like to impose some of the suggested fares, but are unfortunately bound by the regulations , whi ch are as follows : We charge a fare for transporting "normal" cycles, which are defined as "single-seater bicycles". All other cycles, e.g. unicycles, tricycles, economic cycles and lunar cycles may be carried free of charge if the general regulations concerning the transport of goods are not infringed. Unicycles whose saddles are not mounted so high as to require a chain, but whose pedals are directly attached to the hub of the wheel, clearly cannot be described as "bulky" (under the terms of paragraph 1 of the regulations). However , the terms "endanger or inconvenienc e other passengers" and "unpackaged and unprotected objects liable to cause injury to other passengers" may apply here . We therefore recomm e nd that yo u protect the pe dals of the unicycles and transport th e ve hicles safely, i.e. hold on to them during the journey . He wasn 't us ed to performin g for th e yo ung Madrid night crowd, but he dazzle d them with his ball spinning, two a nd three high , catching audience throws on his mout hstick, a high speed, hig h precision juggle , with bounces on the h ead, shoulders, feet , etc. All with socce r balls. Then he floored t he audience with a masterful display of ev e rything that can be done with tennis ra cq uets when yo u 've forgotten your tennis ba lls . 3 ! 4!' 5! ! ! 6! ! ! ! We followed with a classic clown routi n e - The Symphony With a Saw , by Alehop, a magnificent group of circus professiona ls. Then , between jokes by our friend Roman , M.C. for the n ight , two wonderful mimes presented their acts: Abstemio Gordon juggling the h e avens , and Lal o, the punk mime . The first half closed with a delightful musical number by Monica (clarinette) and Carmen (accordeon). A swee t end to a snappy first act. And to think that , after t he s h ow, at the presentation of Go ld and Silver Lions and ot her Medals , I am to r eceive from th e hands of the Festival Pres id e nt a Golden Lion! Th e agonal (death struggle) tendency has not disappeared, but it has been pushed int o the background . Open asse rtion of th e prin c iple of excelle nce is becomin g less and less popular, but it is still p rese nt in the form of selfimpo sed compulsion , in which it is negated. A look at the juggling boom may sen c to illustrate this aspect of disguised co mpetition. In certai n respects, th e juggler represents a new social type. Superficially he is the embodiment. of th e drop-out type who co ns cio usly rejects a s yste m geared to hi gh-p e rforman ce and norms. But there is nothing about him to suggest an apathetic "co uldn 't-care-less" attitud e. The juggler is creative, imaginativ e , disciplined and gifted . He works in a go al-directe d way on a project of selffulfilment in which all his e nergy flows t hrough his flying objects. To a high degree, the art of jugglin g possesses a meditative quality. That widespread ph e nomenon of our time, th e ina bility to co n ce ntrate, is not true of t he pra ctising jugg ler . The fact that he ta ught hims el f to juggle is often an important part of the juggle r's self- image . Basically , that is the only possible way one . can lea rn to juggle: from one's own mistak es and persistent practice. Eac h ne w trick requires an ex tremel y high level of frustration tolerance. Yet it is pre c isely this kind of autodidactic ism that expresses what is becoming an increas in gly widespread attitude to life: "I did it! " Juggling requires a degree of self- co ntrol ve rging on the autistic. On a global so ci al level, it exp resses th e attitude to life gai n ed from ha v ing achieved something outside the confines of any s c hools or social norms. It is a monadic co nsciousness that attaches le ss and less importance to measuring one's pow e r with others. It is enough to have proved it to OJleSelf. The juggler on the street co rner and in the pedestrian precincts is a product of our leisure and unemployment cultur e. It is important for him to be able to let go of things and yet still retain the feeling of having everything under co ntrol. He is trying to ach ie ve someth in g in co mparable. What appears to the outside obs e rve r to convey relaxed imperturbability is nonetheless narcissistic self-imposed compulsion. His filigree art e le vates the juggler in an a lmost magica l way above the banality and competitiveness of eve ry day life - but h e is brought back down t o e arth when another juggl e r appears in the same pedestrian pr ec inct . The festi va l takes place in Jubilee Gardens , next to the Royal festival Hall, just a few hundred , ·ards from the site of London's first ever circus. opened by Philip Astley in 1768. for the duration of the Festh·al, Jubilee Gardens will be transformed into a magical "circus village" a crowded canvas sky lin e of big-tops. mini-tops , magnificent outdoor flying trapeze rigs, marquees and stalls. It will be a riot of colour and - act1v1t1y with jugglers . c lowns, musicians , acrobats, street artists, flocks of stilt -bird s and giant puppets animating the beautifully illuminated walkways, tents, bars and cafes. The IBM had a policy which only allowed certified professionals to join and a demeanor of secrecy inv olv ing all skills, putting off those who were trying to learn th e craft . One of the best thin gs about learnin g to juggle has for me been the e agern e ss of others wh o make their living at it to show me what they kno w. That tim e spent training is already an invest ment. If this desi re to patent tricks is out of fear of being surpassed at one's own tri c k . perhaps it is up to the c reator to work hard er to stay ahead of the younger, stronger, and more imaginative performers that perennially show up . I used to run a juggling business and ha ve come into contact with many hundreds of jugglers. The vast majority ar e people who have a lifestyle outside or on the edges of socie t.y . Buskers, travellers, hi-ppies , fools , jest e rs , gyp sies, whatev e r you call them. Holy Danny calls them "de ge nerate, rowd y, vulgar and decadent". Wel l , let me tell you, Danny, you're outnumbered. They may not write to Kaskad e and a lot of them don 't come t o conventions - they are down in South e rn Europe busking in September - but they are out there. I know because I have had hundreds through my house, sometimes busking in town to earn the last few pennies for their precious clubs, sometimes arriving in their vans in the middle of the night , sometimes sleeping on my floor and hitchhiking away in the morning, always haggling, often needing a bath, sometimes having one too , thes e people are the lifeblood of the juggling movement in Europe. If we exclude them from our clea n , organized, sanitary co nv e ntions, then our association will become enough. This is , of co urse, a pe rsonal view, but I am fed up with being in international contexts where eve ry one speaks English exce pt the Pren ch participants.
