You do NOT have to weigh in with your uniform / Gi. NAGA NO-GI POINT SCORING SYSTEM TAKEDOWNS (1 or 2 Points): In awarding 2 Points, the Referee is directed to look for the following: The competitor must initiate the Takedown or complete a strong counter Takedown; the competitor applying the takedown must exhibit control for two seconds or more in a top dominant position. If you snap the opponent down and he/she ends up on all fours, in order to receive 2 Points, you must immediately come around and control him/her from the back. If you take the opponent down by jumping on his/her back and end up in a Back Grab position facing up, you are awarded 2 Points for the Takedown. A Takedown where the competitor does not remain in some form of top Dominant Positional Control for two seconds will receive 1 Point. Pulling Guard without initial contact will result in a 1 Point Takedown assessed to the opponent. SUBMISSIONS (1 or 2 Points): 2 Points are awarded for a Full and Strong Submission Attempt. A submission attempt that is not potentially fight ending is typically awarded 1 Point. Example: An arm bar attempt in which the opponent is actively defending will result in a 1 Point submission attempt. The same attempt that breaks the grips of the defending competitor (putting them in danger of submission) will result in an additional 1 Point (2 Points total). Chaining full and strong Submission attempts will result in points being awarded for each different submission. For example, if a competitor applies a triangle choke in a full and strong manner, and then goes for an arm bar that is full and strong, a further 1 or 2 Points can be awarded for each additional submission attempt. DOMINANT POSITIONAL CONTROL (2 Points): Controlling your opponent is a crucial step to obtaining a Submission, thus 2 Points are awarded for aggressively obtaining Dominant Control. Dominant Positional Control is any secure form of control that lends itself to submission. The control has to be long enough to set up a submission attempt, which can be as short as two seconds. These forms of Dominant Positional Control include: Mount; any form of Side Control; Knee on Belly; Back Grab; North/South and top Turtle Position control. Among the most common ways to get Dominant Position Control: Ending a Takedown with a Dominant Position. In this situation, 2 Points are awarded for the Takedown, and 2 Points are awarded for obtaining the Dominant Position, for a total of 4 Points (Only 4 positional points in a row). SWEEPS (2 Points): When a competitor on the bottom of any Guard is able to reverse the position and end up on top of his/her opponent, 2 Points are awarded. A Sweep is by definition only applicable if started from any type of Guard position. A Reversal is executed from positions other than the Guard and receives NO points. However, if a Reversal ends up with the top competitor in some form of Side Control or Mount, then 2 Points are awarded. The 2 Points however are awarded for the Side Control or Mount, and not for the Reversal. Note: The NAGA Scoring System is designed to award each competitor according to the standards – Takedown, to Dominant Positional Control, to Submission. Playing for points is not rewarded. Thus, if a competitor simply transitions between Dominant Positions, he/she does not achieve additional points. For example, if you have Side Control, and you transition to Mount, and then back down to Knee on Stomach, no additional points are awarded for the Knee on Stomach. Further, in The NAGA Scoring System, NO points are awarded for Escapes. Thus, if you are Bottom Mount, and you bridge to In Guard, NO points are awarded. NAGA NO-GI GRAPPLING RULES GENERAL RULES: At a minimum a groin protector, mouthpiece, and shorts with a drawstring must be worn (t-shirts/rash guards are optional). No pockets or zippers on the shorts. Wrestling/Martial Arts shoes and ear guards are allowed. No grabbing of clothing during a match. WAYS TO WIN: By submission, whether by tapping or verbally - Consciously Submitting - It is VERY important that all competitors understand how to "Tap-Out" when caught in a submission technique. Tapping out can be done either verbally or through a physical tap. A competitor can tap with their hands, feet or even a nod of their head. This "Tapping" is a conscious admittance of loss or surrender to an opponent. If a submission does not occur, a competitor can win by earning more points, referee decision, or disqualification. If the fight does not end by submission or by points, the referee will choose the winner based on the NAGA Decision Making Criteria (available on the NAGA website). If a match is considered a “Draw” by the referee, then there may be a 2-minute overtime (1 minute for Children & Teens). Referees are encouraged to choose a winner in every match should it not end by submission. LEGAL SUBMISSION TECHNIQUES FOR ADULTS: All Submissions are legal; including heel hooks, knee bars, neck cranks, guillotine chokes etc. (unless otherwise noted below). NO STRIKES OF ANY KIND: No strikes of any kind allowed to any part of the body or head are permitted. OTHER FOULS: Fighters are not allowed to grab and use their opponent’s clothing. Attacks to the front of the windpipe (i.e. Finger in throat), eyes (elbows, palms, fingers, etc.) or groin. No pushing palm or elbow directly into nose. No dropping or slamming of opponent on their head. No slamming from the Guard Position. Eye Gouging, fish hooking, biting, pulling hair, pinching, twisting of skin, sticking a finger into a cut of an opponent, small joint manipulation (finger or toe locks), and putting a finger into any orifice are all FOULS and grounds for disqualification. Interference by a corner with any official or fighter, attacking an opponent in any of these circumstances: Throwing an opponent off the mat, unsportsmanlike conduct. Any intentional use of an illegal technique or act of poor sportsmanship will result in the immediate ejection of those competitors/spectators. SCISSOR TAKEDOWN – When initiating a scissor takedown, at least one hand must be on the ground when applying the takedown. No slamming. SPECIAL RULES FOR CHILDREN & TEENS: No Heel hooks, toeholds, slamming, or neck cranks are allowed. No Straight Ankle locks where the leg crosses the body (reaping) for Teens. If this is your first time competing in a NAGA event, you are certain to have questions. We hope that by detailing what will happen during the day, your experience will be enhanced. If you have concerns not addressed below, please contact us at tournamentinfo@NAGAFighter.com. WHO CAN COMPETE? NAGA does not require you to be on a team in order to compete. In fact, about 25% of our fighters are unaffiliated. NAGA events are open to all styles: Wrestling, Judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Japanese Jujitsu, Sambo, Jeet Kune Do, etc. There are no restrictions on what form of grappling you practice. We have divisions for children and adults of all ages and of all skill levels, in both gi and no-gi competition. WHAT TIME DO I ARRIVE? Doors typically open at 8:00 AM. Children & Teens need to be registered and weighed-in by 10:00 AM. Adults can register and weigh-in up until their division is called. WHEN IS MY FIRST MATCH? Children and Teens are bracketed at 10:00 AM. Once the brackets are completed, the ring they are competing in can give an estimate of when they will be competing. No-Gi divisions will go first, followed by the Gi divisions. Estimated Adult division start times are listed in this packet. The event website will be updated to reflect the latest estimated start times. REGISTRATION OPTIONS: There are two options available to register for a NAGA event. 1. You can pre-register online with a credit/debit card at nagafighter.com. To do this, go to the website, find the event you want to register for and click the Pre-Registration link for that event. Complete the registration process and you will receive an email confirmation within 5 business days confirming your registration. If you miss the pre-registration deadline, you can register at the event. The cost does go up $20 per competitor. REGISTRATION CARDS & WEIGH IN: When you register you will get a registration card for each division you are competing in that day. After registering you will take your cards and proceed to the weigh-in station to weigh-in. If you do not make your intended weight, you can enter a heavier division or you can cut weight and weigh-in again. The scales are open all day for adults. Children and Teens need to be registered and weighed in by 10:00 AM. Your cards will be kept by weigh-ins to prepare for bracketing. WHERE IS MY DIVISION? Children and Teens will be given a sheet indicating the ring in which they will compete. Adult rings are assigned at the Bracketing Table (though Women and Director/Executive divisions may have already been assigned, please consult the form provided at the event). WHAT HAPPENS WHEN MY DIVISION IS CALLED? Children will need to be at their assigned ring at 10:00 AM. Adults, when your division is called over the sound system, you will need to proceed to the Bracketing Area. The NAGA staff member will notify you when your division is ready, check you in and let you know what ring your competition will take place. You will need to go to that ring immediately. At the assigned ring, the first two competitors will be called onto the mat, whereupon they will shake hands and the referee will start the match. At the end of the match, the referee will raise the winner’s hand (decided either by tap out, points, or referee’s decision). When you win, go to the Ring Coordinator to ensure that you are properly advanced to the next round. The winning competitor will take a seat and wait to be called back to fight again. IN CLOSING …Every one of the matches that will take place starts and ends with a handshake as everyone who competes commands respect. We hope you have a great time at the event and win every match! However, it is the mathematical nature of competition that half the athletes lose. That is why winning and losing is only a part of the reason people compete. You test yourself, both bringing out your best, and inspiring your training in the future. You will see the very best athletes in the sport in action, thus learning more. Grappling is a challenging sport. You are admired not just for taking first place, but for having the courage to compete in the first place. We hope to see you on the mats.
