MESSAGE
FROM
THE
PRESIDENT
!
Dear Members,
As we move to the end of summer, I hope everyone has been having fun in the water with their
Newfies!
We were recently at scenic Codorus State park in Hanover, PA, from August 23rd to August 25th.
The aspiring “X” dogs (Water Rescue Dog Excellent) showed off their stuff on Friday afternoon and
early Saturday morning. The wanna-be “Water Rescue Dogs” and junior “Water Dogs” filled out
the remainder of Saturday and all of Sunday. There were exciting boat jumps, dramatic rescues and,
of course, those unexpected follies that always occur at water tests!
Next activity is our Fall Draft Test! Welcome the turning leaves by volunteering to help out, or
brush off your cart and harness, and enter the test. We are back at Oatlands plantation this year, a
beautiful and historic site.
I want to personally thank all of our volunteers – from T-Shirts, to Hospitality, to Calling for Help;
our volunteers make it possible to have all the fun events. I cannot thank them all enough.
To volunteer to help in any of our upcoming events, please see our website at
CNCNEWFS.COM.
Remember, our Williamsburg Parade and Annual Holiday Party
(and meeting) is just around the corner!
We’ve worked hard this year to make this a very affordable and family-friendly event. So, watch the
website for details, come with your Newfie to walk or cart in the parade, and welcome in the holiday
season by visiting with Santa Paws, eating some good food and having some good fun!!
We are hoping this year’s party will be the best ever….bring the kids, or just plan to release your
inner child  and have a good time with fellow Newfie lovers.
Newfoundly,
Rose Miller

our favorite Star Trek Captain.
She's incredibly playful and
energetic, her favorite thing to do
is run around and play with my

my neighborhood.
She's started training to one day
get her water and obedience titles.
She has an incredible work ethic
and absolutely loves to feel like
she's working and contributing.

Bear is 6 years old; we've had him since
he was a puppy. He is 176 pounds of fun,
love, and affection
and a friend to all our neighbors.
He loves to swim and take long walks
through the woods in the park across the
street. Bear had a total hip replacement
two years ago performed by
NC State University Veterinary Hospital.
He is doing great but we are very careful
with him and work to somewhat control
his enthusiastic playtime.
If anyone has any questions about this
experience we would be happy to discuss,
since, unfortunately, many Newf's
experience hip dysplasia.

OTIS AID TO RESCUE
!
!
!
!
!
!
!
!
In May, the CNC BOD voted to spend $500 of the Otis Aid to Rescue fund money on
a very special Newfie. We came across a Newfie pup in significant need – a family
out of work, with a pup needing expensive surgery. His breeder was doing all she
could to help, and the family was doing their best to raise funds for the surgery, that
meant life or death for “Huey.” A CNC member alerted the board to this Newf…and
the board, after investigation and verification of the legitimacy of the need, not only
put forth the first $500 towards his surgery, but challenged other clubs to help, too.
We can’t say who contributed, but when all was said and done, the funds were
quickly raised, the surgery was done, and Huey is on the road to recovery!
While we can’t save them all, “it made a difference to this one.”
Huey will live a long and healthy life with his loving family thanks to the OAR fund.
Starfish Poem
!
One day, an old man was walking down the beach just before dawn. In the distance he
saw a young man picking up stranded starfish and throwing them back into the sea. As
the old man approached the young man, he asked, "Why do you spend so much energy
doing what seems to be a waste of time?" The young man explained that the stranded
starfish would die if left in the morning sun. The old man exclaimed, "But there must be
thousands of starfish. How can your efforts make any difference?" The young man looked
down at the starfish in his hand and as he threw it to safety in the sea, he said," It makes
a difference to this one!"

C N C B O A R D O F D I R E C T O R’ S M E E T I N G (cont’d)
Please report the following to the NCA Board of Directors at their next meeting: At our meeting
this evening, June 2, 2013, the NCA Regional Club Committee, without objection, adopted a
resolution thanking Sandee Lovett and Jill Britton for planning and implementing the opening
ceremonies at the 2013 NCA National Specialty. The committee also expressed, as an event, the
regional club opening ceremonies be held annually at future NCA National Specialties. Also,
the committee has no projected projects for budget consideration this year. Thus, our
committee's only budget line item would be four to six teleconferences. NCA revised some
changes to the draft test regulations; basic control wording to match the water test wording.
Want to remove distractions due to not having guidelines.
National 2014:
*Any applications need to be turned into the AKC for approval before 6/30/13.
*Maturity class, past history at nationals has waned in interest. New England to contribute a
trophy in honor/tribute and Colonial will reciprocate in 2015.
* New 4-6 mo. Class will be Tues. afternoon at national after opening ceremonies and the
winners will be presented at the welcome banquet.
* There will be no decorative carting.
Rose Miller suggests publishing the fact that CNC has fund to help newfs in need after careful
consideration of the individual dog’s situation. She has volunteered to write an article featuring
the fact that CNC was instrumental in helping a newf in need and that it spurred the newf
community to come together to help a dog.
Rescue Report:
This month 1 new rescue was brought in and 1 came back.
Updates on fosters/adoptions:
* Mozart was returned and is staying at Donnas’. He had lost a lot of weight and his fur was
falling out. I had him re-checked and blood work done again to make sure nothing else was
wrong with him. The blood work came back normal. He is eating well and is acting fine.
* Brock’s adoption was finalized.* Jeffrey is staying with foster Dave Rothschild and is doing
really well. We thought we had a home for him but it was not the right match. Dave has 2
other prospective homes.
* Andy (9 months) was brought into rescue because his previous owner could not handle him.
He has been vetted and neutered and just went to his new home last night. His new owner is
David Kaufmann who is a friend of Kathy Paxton and Kathy Hamilton and is a previous
member of CNC. One private adoption was done. A 1-year-old named Chloe was adopted to
the Tranceti’s in Woodbridge. The owner was military and had to relocate to a home that
would not take dogs. The owner wanted to meet the prospective new owners.
One other private adoption is pending.
Motion to give JVD permission to let the Alfords know how much their donations have helped.
All in favor.
Checks approved (KP, AW) Report accepted
Vice President Report: Release form sent for approval was reviewed.

A Dog’s Last Will and Testament
Before humans die, they write their last will and testament,
giving their home and all they have to those they leave behind.
If, with my paws, I could do the same, this is what I’d ask:
To a poor and lonely stray I’d give my happy home,
my bowl and cozy bed, soft pillow and all my toys,
the lap, which I loved so much,
the hand that stroked my fur,
and the sweet voice that spoke my name.
I’d will to the sad, scared shelter dog the place I had
in my human’s loving heart, of which there seemed no bounds.
So, when I die, please do not say,
“I will never have a pet again, for the loss and the pain is more than I can stand.”
Instead, go find an unloved dog,
one whose life has held no joy or hope,
and give my place to him.
This is the only thing I can give: the love I left behind.

NEWFS OF THE CNC!
(cont’d)
Hi CNC friends.
Our home has been increased by 4 feet. His
name is Cornelius Maximus Urelius aka Mr
Max. We adopted him privately through a
friend. He is 3 years old and very large. When
we got him he was approximately 180. With
diet and exercise with his sister Clarebear, he is
down to 160 but he is heavy boned and tall.
The vet says he is healthy and happy just a bit
too big. He loves to play with our brown girl
Clarebear and she will be 5 on July 29th.
She was so very depressed when Finders
Keepers died she wouldn't even go out to play.
Now she is happy again and loving a big
brother. We have always had adopted or
rescued newfs and have been very lucky. They
have all brought joy to us and much
companionship. We will see you all around
town here and there and we will be in
Williamsburg this year and Max will be "Santa
Paws" at the hotel and we are going to be elves
in the parade. See you all soon !

FREE STEP
!
I have a carpeted step that I made
to make it easier
for my Newfy to get up into my car.
It is sized to fit the back door
of my GMC Yukon...
Also would fit a Suburban or a Tahoe
(and perhaps other SUVs)
I would like to donate it free
to someone who could use it,
if it is hard for their dog
to get into a high high SUV.

WATER TEST RESULTS
Colonial Newfoundland Club
Newfoundland Club of America Water Tests
August 23, 24 and 25, 2013
Codorus State Park, Hanover, PA
Newfoundland+Club+of+America+Water+Tests
The Newfoundland Club of America Water Tests are a series of exercises designed to develop and
demonstrate the abilities of purebred Newfoundland dogs in an aquatic environment. Historically, the
Newfoundland has functioned as a working companion to humans in draft and water rescue work.
Members of the breed have participated in many heroic water rescues. NCA water tests are not a
competition; rather they demonstrate natural ability and skills acquired through training, and they
emphasize teamwork between dog and handler in simulated work and rescue situations. The ideal
working relationship is a balance of controlled performance and natural independence. Dogs should
display not only efficiency in accomplishing their tasks, but also willingness and enjoyment in their work.
