The Blue Demons travel to Des Moines, Iowa for a Wednesday night game against the Drake Bulldogs at the Knapp Center. Wednesday’s game will be televised online on ESPN3 with Larry Morgan (play-by-play) and Adam Emmenecker (analyst) handling the television duties. The Blue Demons have won three straight with a four-point win over Norfolk State at the Paradise Jam on Nov. 23 followed by an 82-55 decision at UIC on Wednesday and a 92-76 victory over Chicago State on Saturday. Head coach Dave Leitao is in his fourth season at DePaul and his first since returning to the program after leading the Blue Demons to three postseasons in three years from 2002-05. Overall, the 2015-16 campaign is Leitao’s 10th as a head coach at the collegiate level. Drake is led by Ray Giacoletti who is in his third season leading the Bulldogs. Following the Drake game, the Blue Demons host undefeated Little Rock on Saturday night at McGrath-Phillips Arena. The contest is scheduled for a 9 p.m. start on FS1 and WSCR 670 AM. In 1900, when the first athletic team to represent DePaul University was organized, the monogram “D” was selected for the uniforms. This originated the nickname “D-men” which evolved into “Demons.” The blue, which combines with Demons, signifies loyalty and was chosen in 1901 by a vote of the student body. Season-Opening Notes: DePaul is 81-12 all-time in the first game of the season... the 69-63 win on Nov. 14 against Western Michigan was the start of the 93rd recognized season of DePaul basketball (since 1923-24)... DePaul competed in basketball prior to the 1923-24 season, but season records and results are incomplete... DePaul has won eight straight season openers after a three-game losing streak in first games from 2005-08... last season saw DePaul hold off UIC, 72-71, at McGrath-Phillips Arena... the Western Michigan game was the seventh all-time season opener at McGrath-Phillips Arena for the Blue Demons. Leitao Returns to Lincoln Park: Dave Leitao was named DePaul’s head coach on March 29 and returns to Chicago following a very successful three-year stint with the Blue Demons from 2002-05. Leitao’s three-year run saw three postseason appearances that included a 2004 Conference USA title and trip to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The New Bedford, Mass. native left DePaul following the 2004-05 season and accepted the head coach position at Virginia. With the Cavaliers, he made three postseason appearances in four seasons and was named the 2007 ACC Coach of the Year. Leitao spent the last three seasons working as an assistant coach under Frank Haith at Missouri and Tulsa. Following the 2014-15 season, Leitao was ranked No. 20 in the Basketball Times list of the top 50 assistant coaches in the nation. In his 10th career season as a collegiate head coach, Leitao holds a record of 147-132. Of the nine full seasons as a head coach, he has led teams to six postseason tournaments including advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament at both DePaul (2004) and Virginia (2007). Over his three-plus seasons at DePaul, Leitao holds a record of 62-37. Three Decades in Rosemont: DePaul is its 36th season in 2015-16 at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill. The Blue Demons are 333-167 (.666) all-time in Rosemont. DePaul University played its first season at the then-named Rosemont Horizon in 1980. The Blue Demons debuted in Rosemont with a 74-56 win over Gonzaga and John Stockton on Dec. 1, 1980. DePaul’s game at Allstate Arena against Chicago State on Dec. 5 was the 500th game in program history at the facility. Of the 500 games played in the arena, DePaul head coach Dave Leitao has coached in 49 games. He holds a record of 39-10 (.791) in Rosemont. New Look BIG EAST in Third Season: The BIG EAST Conference features 10 basketball-centric institutions that will continue the tradition of one of the nation’s top basketball leagues. The BIG EAST roster includes Butler University, Creighton University, DePaul University, Georgetown University, Marquette University, Providence College, St. John’s University, Seton Hall University, Villanova University and Xavier University. GAME EIGHT AT DRAKE The league’s conference tournament will be held at Madison Square Garden with television partner FOX Sports providing nationwide coverage of the conference year-around on FOX Sports 1. The conference schedule will consist of 18 games with each school playing home-and-away games against the other nine teams. The BIG EAST Tournament presented by New York Life is scheduled for March 9-12, 2016 at Madison Square Garden. The membership is a combined 60-19 (.759) against non-conference opponents through games of Dec. 7. Last season saw the 10 schools post an impressive combined record of 94-30 (.758) against non-BIG EAST teams in the regular season. Preseason Picks: DePaul junior guard Billy Garrett Jr. was selected to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Second Team as the league kicked off the 2015-16 season with media day at Madison Square Garden on Oct. 14. Defending conference champion Villanova was the unanimous pick to win the 2015-16 BIG EAST regular-season crown while the Blue Demons were slotted eighth in a vote by the league’s head coaches. Garrett was also named to the preseason second team last season after winning BIG EAST Rookie of the Year honors in 2014. The Chicago native led the Blue Demons with 12.0 points and 3.9 assists per game shooting .832 (158-190) from the free throw line during his sophomore campaign. Georgetown followed Villanova in the preseason poll for the second straight year with Butler, Xavier and Providence rounding out the top half of the preseason picks. Providence’s Kris Dunn was selected as the BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year while Villanova’s Jalen Brunson was named Preseason Freshman of the Year. Marquette was picked to finish sixth with Seton Hall in seventh and DePaul in eighth place. Creighton and St. John’s completed the 10-team poll. Roster Notes: Senior guard David Molinari earned a scholarship prior to the start of the season... Molinari joined the program last season as a walk-on... Dave Leitao III is sitting out the 2015-16 season as a transfer under NCAA guidelines... he played a season at Peru State (Neb.) in 2013-14... the 2015-16 roster features nine players from the Chicagoland area... it also includes two international players with Erten Gazi (North Cyprus) and Oumar Barry (Guinea). DePaul Adds Three For Next Season: Brandon Cyrus, Al Eichelberger and Devin Gage will join the program starting in the 2016-17 season. The trio all completed paperwork on the first day of the signing period. Cyrus is a 6-5 guard from Encinitas, Calif., who is in his second season at La Lumiere School in La Porte, Ind. He averaged 9.8 points and 4.6 rebounds per game during his junior season at La Lumiere and is the only returning starter for this season for head coach Shane Heirman on the sixth-ranked Lakers in USA Today’s high school top 25. Prior to La Lumiere, Cyrus played at Torrey Pines High School in California where he averaged 16.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.9 assists as a sophomore and 10.4 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.7 assists as a freshmen. Among the national recruiting rankings, Cyrus is the 24th-best shooting guard in the country according to Scout.com and slotted at No. 34 by 247Sports.com. Eichelberger is a 6-7 forward playing his senior season at La Lumiere with Cyrus. The Saginaw, Mich. native averaged 10.8 points and 7.1 rebounds as a junior at Prolific Prep in California and is ranked at No. 50 among the nation’s power forwards by ESPN.com and No. 65 by 247Sports.com. During his sophomore season at Saginaw High School, Eichelberger averaged 13.0 points and 12.8 rebounds per game. Gage is a 6-2 from Chicago’s Curie High School and is one of the city’s top guards. He averaged 17.6 points, 5.3 assists and 4.2 rebounds during his junior season with the Condors while earning third team All-Public League honors. Ranked as the state’s sixth-best prospect in the class of 2016, Gage is recognized as a three-star recruit by both Scout.com and Rivals.com. On Deck: DePaul hosts Little Rock on Saturday night at McGrath-Phillips Arena... the Trojans are just one of 12 undefeated teams in the nation through games of Dec. 7... The design endeavors to become GAME EIGHT AT DRAKE aA groundbreaking ceremony was held on Nov. 16, 2015 for the facility as the project was started in the fall along with the 40-story, 1,200-room Marriott Marquis hotel across the street. DePaul is expected to host 25-30 events annually in the facility including graduation ceremonies, which allow each school of the university to have its ceremony under the same roof. aThe 10,000-seat events center is scheduled to open in the 2017-18 basketball season and will be located near McCormick Place on Cermak Road between Indiana and South Prairie Avenues. Not only will the facility serve as a home for men’s and women’s basketball that is close to the university’s two primary campuses, it will create jobs, attract tourism and bring economic development to the planned McCormick Place entertainment district. aThe location is situated just three ‘L’ stops from DePaul’s loop campus that caters to half of the DePaul student body. The Lincoln Park campus and the remaining half of DePaul’s 25,000 students is 10 ‘L’ stops from the future home of the Blue Demons.
