THE BOTTOM LINE SPRING 2016 ISSUE A MESSAGE FROM THE ARANY PRESIDENT Dear New York State Automotive Recyclers & Supporters: Flying the ARANY colors! Over the last two months, I have had the honor of representing all of you—our members and New York State’s Automotive Recyclers at ARA’s Hill Days in Washington, DC, and at our own Lobby Day in Albany. You will see more on these legislative outreach efforts inside on pages 6 & 7. I have two takeaways from these two events. The first is from our time in Washington and speaking with our state’s representatives in Congress. It is very important that ALL Automotive Recyclers come together and talk about the issues they have in common—and more so—talk about the differences in how we operate from state-to-state, provinceto-province. I’m always amazed how just hearing a different perspective or experience helps me get a fresh look at a problem. This is why ARANY inaugurated our Summit over two years ago—so our colleagues that share a border with New York and beyond—can come together and learn from each other. And in that process, we also energize each other. continued on page 3 The Newsletter of the Automotive Recyclers Association of New York ARANY IN . C . D N O T G WASHIN & ALBANY SEE INSIDE A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT CONTINUED My second takeaway comes from our own Lobby Day in Albany. We cannot ever rest on our accomplishments. We know that to be successful in our businesses, we need to be on top of the latest trends in our industry, technology, marketing strategies, and have our staff trained and ready to work with the public. To be successful as an organization, we must make sure all of our members are taking full advantage of our membership benefits, and are contributing their ideas and energy to the success of ARANY. In meeting with our elected officials, we must always seek to educate them, so they know about what we do, and how we take seriously our commitment to recycling, stewardship of natural resources, and the economic life of the communities we serve. We will soon be bringing the 2015-16 Membership Year to a close—and launching the new year. In the months ahead, I ask all of you to assist in reaching out and finding new and lapsed members to be part of our association. We have said it before—there is STRENGTH IN NUMBERS—and we need to add to our voices in protecting and advancing the Automotive Recycling industry in New York State. We’re also looking for ideas for 2016-17! If you have ideas of where we could hold some Regional Meetings—or if you would like to host a Regional Meeting at your yard— please contact our Administrator Victoria Palasieski at the ARANY Office at 1-800-944-7278 or info@arany.com. Thank you for your membership in ARANY—and for supporting our important mission! We’re Here For You! SALES PARTS SERVICE RENTALS FINANCING REWARDS PAST PRESIDENT SHARES THE VALUES OF PMA BENWOOD AUTO PARTS WELCOMES JASON SIPLEY OF PMA TO THEIR YARD. WE ALL KNOW HOW STRESSFUL AND CONFUSING COMPLIANCE MAY SOUND, BUT JASON AND THE PMA TEAM ARE THE EXPERTS THAT ARE HERE TO GUIDE US. As business owners, it is our duty to ensure our employees and customers have a safe place to do business. As we all know, spending every day in our businesses can sometimes lead to us looking over problems that an outsider’s perspective could find easily. Although we all take pride in keeping our facilities clean, safe, and organized, inevitably some problems will get overlooked. It’s never been my intention to push safety items to the back burner, and I’m sure everyone can relate to having the pressures of the day to day business life cause us to let safety measures take a back seat, albeit unintentionally. Regardless, we all know that OSHA doesn’t really care how busy we are. It’s a stark reminder of how a small, presumably harmless issue could lead to a business owner taking a huge penalty. The good news is that there are people who are willing to help us recognize and rectify these issues – free of cost! When Jason Sipley from PMA Companies stopped by our facility, I was proud to show him how clean and organized we (thought) we were. And indeed, despite our efforts, we had several things requiring our attention that I would have overlooked. I was amazed at how easily Jason found so many simple solutions for us to get our company back to safe standards. We all know how stressful and confusing compliance may sound, but Jason and the PMA team are the experts that are here to guide us. I highly recommend you reach out for the same help I did. As is the case with safety, it always costs more in the long run if you sweep things under the rug. We all pay too much for insurance and workers comp, so we need to do our part to keep our industry leading the way for workplace safety. Remember - common sense doesn’t always apply when dealing with the government, so it’s better (and cheaper) to comply and tackle these issues right away!
