Brief description Weather satellite reception on 137 MHz with Perseus, converter DCMDCM-137 and antenna WSPWSP-137 This guide describes reception of weather satellites on 137 MHz with a Perseus SDR. With two further components this shortwave receiver becomes an efficient VHF monitoring station. The components has to be set up as follows: The antenna WSP-137, a cross dipole sytem with right-wing circular polarization, should be mounted on the roof. Connect the coaxial socket of the antenna to the input of the converter, and the output of the converter with the input of the receiver. Additionally, the converter has to be supplied with a currency of 12 V=. The converter transfers the range of 136-138 MHz to 28-30 MHz. The Perseus offers the option to display the real reception frequency of the converter directly (for example 137.500 instead of 29.500 kHz). Within the first 6 weeks after the initial installation of the Perseus software this feature is enabled. To get this function work permanently, it is necessary to buy the „External Down-Converter Software Option License“ at http://microtelecom.it/perseus/software.html. This license is available only from Microtelecom, not from SSB-Electronic. The offset can be calculated from the difference between the lowest reception frequency (136 MHz) and the lowest converted frequency (28 MHz): 136 – 28 = 108 MHz If an external external preamplifier is used, used, its its gain has to be entered at „Gain (dB)“. So not only the frequencies are stored, but also the corresponding parameters. The frequencies are: NOAA 19 on 137.100 kHz NOAA 17 on 137.500 kHz NOAA 15 on 137.620 kHz NOAA 18 on 137.912,5 kHz Further parameters: Demodulation: FM Bandwidth: 40 kHz So the Perseus software is configured already. Converter operation is possible also without frequency correction; in this case the converted frequencies has to be stored (29100, 29.500, 137.620 und 137.912,5 kHz). The second part of this guide describes basic settings of the decoding software. We had good success using the Freeware APTDecoder: http://www.poes-weather.com/ After installation (SetupAPTDecoder-2.0.5.88.exe) it is necessary to set the own location, so the corresponding pass times can be calculated. Furthermore the position dates of the satellites have to be imported by the software, and the sound input source has to be defined. Pass list (Satellite – Pass list) The calculated start of reception (AOS) is shown, as well as its duration. The frequency of the next passing satellite should be set by choosing the corresponding memory at the Perseus. During approach of the satellite the reception frequency is above the nominal frequency, during overflight it is on the nominal frequency, and below the nominal frequency while departing. This Doppler effect can be compensated by activating the Perseus Button „Afc“ (s. screenshots): Approaching satelli satellit atellite signal SSB-Electronic GmbH Handwerkerstraße 19 58638 Iserlohn-Germany Seite 6 von 8 All rights reserved.
