Unsettling Wyoming: Confronting Cultural Difference in the Cowboy State Donnerstag, 28.04.2016, 16 Uhr NK: 401 PROF. ERIC SANDEEN UNIVERSITY OF WYOMING, LARAMIE CURRENTLY VISITING SCHOLAR THROUGH THE INTERNATIONAL VISITING SCHOLARS PROGRAM This lecture examines how conflicting American values reverberate through public discourse. It investigates public sites such as Ellis Island and the Heart Mountain Relocation Center, where values of tolerance and multiculturalism are celebrated and unjust acts are remembered and analyzed. It will address a very hotly contested debate in Wyoming, one which is played out in public venues throughout the state: the possibility of establishing a refugee resettlement office in the state government. This is an important debate but it is also revealing to see how the sites and agencies of public culture help form and stage it. This controversy is taking place during an economic recession that is causing large numbers of the newly unemployed to leave the state. The boom and bust cycle is a part of Wyoming culture; the worry over admitting “the other” to compete for jobs is a traditional concern when immigration is discussed. Wyoming is thus being unsettled in two significant ways. Über Ihren Besuch würden wir uns freuen. Prof. Dr. Karsten Fitz Amerikanistik Diese Veranstaltung findet mit freundlicher Unterstützung der Phil. Fakultät der Universität Passau statt.
