The Children’s Institute of Pittsburgh is the leader in innovative and integrated
health care, education, and social services for children and youth with special
health care needs. We remain dedicated to improving the quality of life for
children, young people and their families by providing a specialized continuum
of services that enables them to reach their potential.

The Children’s Institute of Pittsburgh,
These past 12 months have been a year filled with
promise for the children and families served by
The Children’s Institute of Pittsburgh. Many of our
Vision 2016 strategic initiatives, identified through
our comprehensive community needs assessment,
are already being realized through the Make an
Amazing Difference Campaign. With strong support
from the communities we serve, The Children’s
Institute is responding to real community needs
through innovative, cost-effective programs
and services that open the door to a future full
of possibility for our kids and their families.
We publicly launched the Campaign in November
2014 to raise $12 million to accomplish our goal of
improving the health and quality of life for children
and youth with special needs and their families.
We are so grateful to the philanthropic community
and other close friends who have joined with our
Board of Directors, Associate Board, administrators,
staff and volunteers in contributing $8 million
in pledges and gifts as of June 30, 2015. Your
contributions are already making an amazing
difference—today, tomorrow and forever.
Please visit our campus. You’ll notice exciting
changes right away. We’ve enhanced our entrances
and upgraded security, and we will be adding
accessible gardens and green space to provide
alternative outdoor environments for therapies
and relaxation. After renovations are completed
next year in our hospital, we will welcome children
and youth with developmental disabilities to our
new inpatient behavioral health program that, in
collaboration with our medical services, will provide
superior care to these kids and their families.
Our Care Coordination initiative, which enrolled
243 children last year, is improving the health and
well-being of children and youth with complex medical
conditions through the careful management of
each family’s health-related, school and community
services. We also have dramatically increased
our telepresence utilization, validating how the
implementation of effective technologies helps us
to improve access, provide education and training,
and offer innovative ways to reunify families.
Young people with disabilities will be better
prepared for the adult world through our expanded
transition services, including a specialized new
transition curriculum and enhanced collaboration
with community resources. Our business plan
includes offering this program to young people
outside The Day School, and eventually to those up
to age 25. We have also formalized our renowned
work in five major areas—brain injury, spinal cord
injury, autism, Prader-Willi syndrome and family
visitation—into Centers of Excellence to broaden
and deepen our expertise.
The Children’s Institute, for more than a century,
has grown and evolved to meet the ever-changing
needs of the children and families we serve.
Through the Make an Amazing Difference
Campaign, we are once again recommitting
our efforts to those who need our help.

Medical and therapy services are provided to inpatients and outpatients by The Hospital
at The Children’s Institute of Pittsburgh. It was the first hospital in the country to receive CARF
accreditation as a Comprehensive Inpatient Rehabilitation Pediatric Specialty Program
— and is still the only one in Pennsylvania. Acute-care hospitals save kids’ lives —
then The Children’s Institute restores quality to those lives.

Educational services are provided through The Day School,
an approved private school for students ages 5-21 challenged by
complex and neurological disabilities, including autism spectrum
disorders. With 191 students from 67 school districts, The Day School
is one of only 23 schools in the country recognized by the National
Commission for Accreditation of Special Education Services.

Child and family services are provided through Project STAR, which works to ensure
that children, particularly those with special needs, can live in safe, nurturing “forever”
families. Services include intensive family support, family visitation and reunification,
family recruitment, child placement through adoption and foster care, medical
foster care and enrichment programming.

Make an Amazing Difference Campaign
The Make an Amazing Difference Campaign
is an ambitious effort to invest $12 million
in innovative, cost-effective responses that
will help children and young people have
better tomorrows. The progress we have
made so far toward this goal would not have
been possible without the thoughtfulness
and generosity of our donors. We thank all
of them on behalf of the children, youth and
families who have personally benefited from
their kindness. There are still many miles
that lie before us, and we invite others to
join us on this journey to a future filled with
possibility for our kids and their families.
Make an Amazing Difference Campaign
$8 Million Received as of 6.30.15
Behavioral Health Services
The availability of specialized behavioral health
resources for children and youth with developmental
disabilities is sorely lacking in our community. We
made several operational changes that have resulted
in increased outpatient behavioral health capacity,
with fiscal year 2015 volumes soaring by 642%
over fiscal year 2013. We are also making physical
renovations to our hospital to welcome patients and
families in an inpatient behavioral health program
that is thoughtfully designed to provide superior
care. We anticipate construction to begin in October
2015 with the new unit opening in April 2016.

Care Coordination
There is a great need for continued opportunities to
grow and learn for young adults with developmental
disabilities once they age out of educational
services at 21. We have already begun to expand our
specialized transition curriculum for students ages
18 to 21 to better prepare them for adult life, including
professional development of 165 teaching and
therapy staff, and community-based learning for 120
transition program students. We continue to explore
the creation of an adult-training facility for these
post-graduate students with plans to open in 2017.
Families of children with complex medical
conditions are amazing, but they need a lot of
help to manage the myriad tasks involving health
care, school and community services. Our “proofof-concept” Care Coordination Initiative has
enrolled 243 children as of June 2015. Fifty-seven
percent of the children are under 10 years old,
and Medicaid is the primary insurance for 60%
of them, demonstrating that our efforts are
reaching the most vulnerable populations.
Telepresence
A telepresence delivery model using today’s best
technologies can expand access for vulnerable
children, educate professionals outside our immediate
area, and provide innovative ways to reunify families.
In the second half of fiscal year 2015 our monthly
telepresence utilization increased by 86% over the
prior six months. The Day School is also using this
technology to create an online Knowledge Center
offering educational modules to support those
who care for and teach children and adults with
development disabilities. The Knowledge Center
is expected to launch in December 2015.
Capital Improvements
Therapeutic outdoor space for patients,
students and their families is essential for
recovery of health and revival of spirit. Following
the high standards set by the Nimick Family
Therapeutic Garden and Robert Bruce Posner
Memorial Playground, we will restore the
historic Denniston Street entrance and make
improvements to the Family Visitation Center’s
grounds. We have already redesigned our
Shady Avenue and Northumberland Street
entrances to provide reception and security
staff wider visibility and the ability to lock doors
and disable automatic entry to ensure the
security of our patients, students and employees.
