That was the case, however, at the start of the 2014-2015 school year for four faculty members at Sacred Heart-Griffin High School. Eric Zanger, Dr. Bill Moredock, Steve Elliott and Chris Edmonds all shared the same start year of 1990. Though job roles changed through the years, the four remained friends during their tenure at SHG. Dr. Bill Moredock, also a 1972 graduate of Griffin High School, is now the Director of Guidance, and started as a guidance counselor. 1980 graduate joins staff as Coordinator of Alumni Activities Sacred Hea AN Michele Reavy joined the Advancement Michele (Brahler) Reavy ‘80 Office staff this summer as the Coordinator of Alumni Activities. Michele was instrumental in planning the Adult Homecoming Celebration, will coordinate the SHG Trivia Night this winter and the Scholarship Scramble Golf Outing next summer. Food and refreshments were generously provided by Qdoba, The Market on Koke Mill, Jersey Mikes, Hy-Vee and Bank of Springfield. Over 400 coaches, faculty members, alumni, fans and friends of SHG came to celebrate the strong history and legacy of Cathedral Boys High School, Griffin High School, Sacred Heart Academy and Sacred Heart-Griffin. n FACULTY from page 1 Chris Edmonds began his career at Sacred Heart-Griffin as both a theology and history instructor, and now teaches history and sociology. Eric Zanger has taught science since his start in 1990, coached the girls softball team for 17 years, and the sophomore girls basketball team and freshmen basketball team for 3 years. Steve Elliott taught mathematics during his career at SHG. All four of the men have remained close friends and colleagues throughout their tenure at SHG, and posed for a picture (featured on page 1) during the first week of classes to commemorate the accomplishment. Sadly, Steve Elliott passed away on August 23, shortly after the photo was taken. Students and faculty celebrated Mr. Elliott’s life and shared fond memories on a special board placed in a hallway in the school. The entire SHG community continues to pray for all those affected by his passing, and for the continued healing from this tragedy. n Mrs. Katie Ambro *Mr. Tom Bayer Board Ch Sister Mary Domi Brennan, O.P. For twenty-five years SHG has been educating students “in good faith.” Academic excellence in a community of faith gets stronger with each year. Why? Have you had the opportunity to meet our remarkable faculty, parents, staff and students who work together to be the best that they can be? If you have, you know why! No, we’re not perfect, but everyone works together to help themselves and others! An amazing example of this happened during the football playoffs last fall. Saturday, November 16, 2013, SHG football fans were celebrating as we moved closer to playing in the championship football game. Late Saturday evening, we learned that our next competition would be against Washington High School at our stadium. Those feelings of excitement quickly turned to ones of compassion and concern for our neighbors in Washington, IL as we heard about the terrible tornado that struck their community Sunday afternoon. Several of the key players on the Washington team lost their homes and all their belongings. Early Monday morning, Coaches Leonard and Brenneisen were on the phone with Coach Crouch from Washington asking him what he needed, how SHG could help. Their immediate need was water. Football parents and other SHG volunteers quickly became conduits for engaging the entire City of Springfield and the surrounding areas in providing support for the City of Washington. Over 2,000 Washington fans, many of them bussed on transportation provided by the SHG and the Springfield community, attended the final play-off game and were provided with a sit-down meal or box lunch after the game. Our Community of Faith was never more obvious than on Saturday, November 23, 2013! We were so grateful to have the opportunity to share our abundance with the folks in need in Washington, Illinois. A mutual relationship was developed as the Washington team and many of their fans traveled to DeKalb the following Saturday to cheer SHG on to our championship victory! Our friendship with Washington, IL is a highlight of our 25th Anniversary year. The cost of living has greatly increased the last twenty-five years. This creates the challenge of keeping tuition affordable so that we can continue to offer a premier Catholic, Dominican education to as many Catholic families as possible. To honor the founding leaders of Sacred Heart-Griffin and provide scholarship money, we established the Sister M. Paul McCaughey and Father Robert Erickson Scholarship. This scholarship will be awarded annually to an incoming senior who has demonstrated leadership, vision and courage during his/her three years at SHG. With great pride, I share with you the closing paragraph from the essay written by Allison Frank, our 2014 recipient: Have I demonstrated leadership? Yes, I am a freshman focus leader. Have I demonstrated courage? Yes, I say no to peer pressure of drugs and alcohol. Have I demonstrated vision? Yes, I try to do one kind deed every day in order to make a positive change in the life of another human being. My work of leadership, courage and vision is just beginning and I am thankful to God that I have had the gift to attend SHG which has offered opportunities to allow these qualities to grow in me. The many people whose names appear on these pages help to keep the cost of SHG affordable! We cannot thank you enough for your generosity. Without your annual donation, many of our students who receive scholarships and/or financial grants would not be able to attend Sacred Heart-Griffin. I hope you feel as much pride as I do in the many accomplishments of our students and in their commitment to live a life of service to God and others. Asking God to bless you abundantly for your generosity, I am sincerely yours, Sister Katherine O’Connor, O.P. President 2013-2014 Annual Fund Dear Alumni, Parents, Past Parents, Grandparents, Faculty, Staff and Friends of SHG, Thank you for supporting the 2013-2014 SHG Annual Fund. It is with much gratitude that we recognize the many individuals and businesses that are listed in the following pages. Together, almost $250,000 was raised for the annual operating budget for Sacred Heart-Griffin High School. Please know that each and every student at SHG benefits from your generosity. Great care has been taken in preparing this listing of donors to ensure its accuracy. If we have omitted your name, misspelled it, or failed to place it in the correct category, we apologize and ask that you bring it to our attention. Our recognition of donors includes those who made a contribution to the SHG Annual Fund from July 1, 2013 – June 30, 2014 and are listed by giving level. The 2014-2015 Annual Fund year is currently underway, and we hope we can count on your continued support! Contributed Services Throughout the years, the Springfield Dominicans, the Viatorians and the Dominican priests have supported Sacred Heart Academy, Cathedral Boys High School, Griffin High School and Sacred Heart-Griffin by accepting only a fraction of their just earnings. In fiscal year 2013-14 alone, the contributed services of seven Dominican sisters totaled $208,639. In addition to their contributed services in 2013-14, the Springfield Dominican Sisters contributed $175,000 to the financial aid and scholarship fund. Our SHG family extends heartfelt appreciation and gratitude to the Dominican Sisters for their dedicated service and commitment to Catholic education. This program, administered by SHG, places qualified students in partnering businesses in the community. The student interns are introduced to a wide range of work experiences and skills necessary in the professional world. Classroom work and business experience earn the students 0.5 business elective credit. After the students have fulfilled all the requirements of the program, the partnering business submits a check in the amount of $3,000, payable to SHG, which is credited to the student intern’s tuition account. SHG provides the student interns with W-2 forms and pays for worker’s compensation insurance.
