We continued to grow our alliances in order to better serve our clients. As an example, we are embarking on a wonderful partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of the Bellport Area to provide an array of services including mental health, chemical dependency, senior services (SeniorNet), therapeutic recreation for children and hopefully much more. Working together to blend the best of both organizations is good for the community. We also continue to strengthen our presence of co-locations within medical practices to provide mental health services to patients as needed. These practices are located in Southampton, Mattituck, Shirley and Riverhead. The outcomes for our clients who receive both primary and behavioral healthcare under one roof is optimal for everyone. Our wonderful partnership with the North Shore –LIJ Health System at Southside Hospital continues to be an outstanding alliance in demonstrating the importance of an integrated model of health care. During the last three years, we are demonstrating positive health outcomes with various metrics. My thanks to Dr. Jay Enden, Medical Director of Southside, and FSL Board Trustee, Donna Moravick, Executive Director of Southside, and Winnie Mack, Regional Director, Eastern Region for NS-LIJ, for their support and commitment to these initiatives. Family Service League has also formed an Independent Practice Association with four other human service agencies to help strengthen our strategic position during this time of great system transformation. Along with FEGS, FREE, PSCH, and MHA of Nassau County, we are designing creative and innovative models of care to improve access, quality and efficiencies. We all recognize that collaborations and strategic alliances are our new world and the Long Island Behavioral Alliance (LIBA) is forging ahead in creating an integrated behavioral health network of providers for access to regional, high quality, behavioral healthcare. This year continues to provide many, many challenges, but an equal number of opportunities as well. My thanks to all of our wonderful partners who join us in our resolve to Restore Hope and Rebuild Lives. Madeline Kane, BS Vice President for Human Resources Jeff Steigman, Psy. Family Service League Receives $150,000 Donation from JPMorgan Chase New program prepares youth and adults for careers in Medical Billing Family Service League (FSL) received a $150,000 grant from JPMorgan Chase & Co. to support the Medical Billing Certificate program. This new vocational training program, located at William Floyd High School, in Mastic Beach will prepare students for careers in the high-growth field of Medical Billing. Participants who complete the program will graduate with the required certification to enable them to find a job in this fast-growing sector. to mobilize their strengths and improve the quality of their lives at home, in the workplace and in the community. JPMorgan Chase is a valued partner of our agency.” FSL’s Medical Billing Certificate program is a collaboration with the William Floyd School District and Suffolk County Community College (SCCC). The program is offered as part of William Floyd High School’s Business Academy. Both day and evening classes will be available and will serve both high school students and adults in the community. For additional information, contact Jodi Lieberman at 631-647-3146 or jlieberman@fsl-li.org. The need for Medical Billing Specialists is expected to increase in the years ahead. According to the US Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, Medical Assistants, which include Medical Billers, have a projected growth rate of 24 % on Long Island, much faster than the average for all occupations. “Family Service League is thrilled to enhance our portfolio of employment-related programs with this new addition”, says Karen Boorshtein, FSL President and CEO. “Over the years, JPMorgan Chase has provided critical support to Family Service League, helping us to fulfill our mission to help individuals, children, and families Community Behavioral Health Collaborative Brings Needed Services to Town of East Hampton Family Service League Partners with Boys & Girls Club of the Bellport Area The East Hampton school community has identified and requested assistance in meeting an increasing need for children’s mental health services. This has been exacerbated by rapidly changing demographics that have increased the Spanish speaking population to over 50% of the school children. The Community Behavioral Health Collaborative is a new initiative being implemented in the Town of East Hampton. The intent is to complement the expansion of mental health treatment services for children through the FSL East Hampton clinic with early identification, prevention and educational services for children and families. The initiative consists of the establishment of a community school in the Springs K-8 school district in order to provide family support, assistance and education as well as workshops on various parenting issues throughout the town in English and Spanish. Family Service League began providing services at the Boys & Girls Club of the Bellport Area facilities on August 2nd. This new partnership will expand the availability of services to children and families in the Bellport community. RECESS, a therapeutic recreation program for children ages 7-14 with serious emotional problems, is the first Family Service League (FSL) program to be housed at this facility, to be followed shortly by mental health and substance abuse clinics. Future FSL programs to partner at the Boys and Girls Club include CAIR (Community Advocacy, Information and Referral), and SeniorNet, a computer training program for seniors. In addition, we will be working closely with the East Hampton School Districts to provide emotional well-being screenings for young children and to increase awareness of children’s mental health issues throughout the community. We will also provide training to the community that will enhance team membership in our Community Crisis Action Team (C-CAT) so that we may better respond to east end incidents. According to Tracie Romandetti, Executive Director of the Boys & Girls Club of the Bellport Area, “the addition of Family Service League programs to our site will complement the services currently provided and enhance the programs we are able to offer the children and families in the Bellport community.” In addition to providing much-needed programs for youth, this state-of-theart facility will offer programs for adults and seniors from the surrounding area. 4 A Vegetable Garden Grows at SuffolkHope SuffolkHope is Family Service League’s home to 6 men who were previously homeless. Today, the home has a new vegetable garden which is thriving under the careful care of two residents, Steve and Kenny. Both gentlemen have been residents of SuffolkHope for the past two years and, though they traveled very different roads to get there, they became fast friends and discovered they both have a love of gardening, cooking and trying to eat a healthy diet. Motivated to install a garden in the back yard, they contacted the Huntington Community Garden Director who happily helped them. Turning the soil, buying plants, watering, fertilizing, staking tomatoes and weeding took considerable time and effort. Now the hard work has paid off and they are enjoying the harvest. This garden means more to these gentlemen than just food to eat — they learned that by planting a small seed, big things can grow. Chemical Dependency Treatment Programs Designed for Professionals New FSL Family Center Opens in William Floyd School District A better life lies The William Floyd School District is strongly committed to community involvement in order to enhance the academic experience of its students. Towards this end, FSL will open a Family Center in collaboration with the district, which will be housed in a 2,000 square foot space located on the grounds between the high school and the middle school. within your reach Family Service League Family Centers treat individuals who have been impacted by the disease of addiction. The FSL Dependency Treatment Program for Professionals provides the confidential comprehensive support of therapy with a focus on the unique challenges that are faced in the workplace. Much like FSL’s other family centers, services will highlight the one stop shopping model beginning with services designed to assess the family’s needs. Services to be offered on-site will include relief and welfare, referral, advocacy, counseling and educational workshops focused on strengthening families. The center will be open Monday through Friday and will include two days with evening hours. Each individual entering the FSL medically supervised program has a plan specifically developed to fit their needs. The program provides an assessment and evaluation to assist in determining the level of care needed to support recovery and maintain abstinence. These funds support FSL programs such as Operation Success, early learning and pre-school programs, and the Brentwood Community School (BCS), which provide educational support and enrichment to low-income children and youth. Stop & Shop awarded a grant of $2,000 to Family Service League. This grant supported Family Service League’s Operation Success Summer Extension program, located at our Riverhead Family Center. During the school year, these children attend our Operation Success homework help program. The summer extension reinforces their academic skills and keeps their minds active. Operation Success Summer Extension provides structure, supervision and makes learning fun. Michael Stewart & Horton Foote with Peggy Boyd and Brendan Ryan. Children Enjoy Summer Baseball Games Thanks to Seats of Dreams and the Long Island Ducks Thanks to the generosity of King Kullen Corp., and the people who shop and donate at King Kullen stores, Family Service League was presented with the first of two checks to help send children to summer camp. King Kullen has been a dedicated supporter of Family Service League and the Long Island community, helping children whose families are struggling with financial hardship to enjoy a carefree summer camp experience. Over 130 children and their families were invited to enjoy a Long Island Ducks baseball game this summer due to the generous efforts of the Seats of Dreams organization. The games have been a wonderful experience, providing families the opportunity to come together for a special day at the ballpark. Seats of Dreams, a national nonprofit launched in 2012, gives donated sports and entertainment tickets to disadvantaged, disabled or sick children. Those who donate receive a tax receipt for the value of the ticket. “It’s always a great thing to be able to find an asset that someone doesn’t want and create value out of it for someone else,” stated Mr. Greenbaum, cofounder of Seats of Dreams. Our thanks to Seats of Dreams, their efforts work well with the FSL mission of helping LI families mobilize their strengths and improve the quality of their lives at home and in the community. Susan Buonasera To Retire Later this year, we will say goodbye to our Vice President for Development, Susan Buonasera. Susan will be retiring at the end of December after serving the not-for-profit community for more than 40 years. We were fortunate to have her with Family Service League for the past seven years. Susan’s attention to detail and thorough knowledge of fundraising strategies and leadership skills have served us all well. She has worked side by side with me as well as the entire Board and staff, to elevate FSL’s fundraising capability throughout her tenure. While we still have a few more months with Susan, I wanted to note this in our newsletter as this will be the last one she puts together for us. A job well done. Thank you Susan. —Karen Boorshtein, President and CEO 10 Making a Tribute Gift is a meaningful way to honor a friend, relative, co-worker, or colleague.
