The lovely town with 19.000 inhabitants is located 150 km north of Frankfurt in the heart of Germany. People are very proud of its old buildings from the Middle Ages and the famous Town Hall with its ten towers which was built in 1509, 500 years ago. The Edertal High School is attended by 1.200 boys and girls (10 to 19 years old). The musical education has been very important for decades and so numerous ensembles exist. There are several rock groups and a Big Band, too. Therefore the school was given the title “School with a Focus on Music” by the State. In 2008 the Youth Symphony orchestra of Edertal High School celebrated its 40th anniversary. In 2009 it was elected to be the ambassador of the State of Hesse in the nationwide meeting “Schools make music”. In 2011 it won the 2 nd price in the competition of school orchestras in Hessen. Currently 79 pupils are members of the orchestra. This led in 2008 to the foundation of an additional orchestra for younger instrumentalists with up to 60 members. In total, 210 out of the1200 pupils practice their instruments in various groups every week. The orchestra is also an important institution in the cultural life of Frankenberg. A nationwide radio program honored the orchestra in 2004 as “a school orchestra of special distinction/quality”. The orchestra performs at events in school life, churches, and local organizations and societies about 25 times a year. It plays free of charge where normally a paid chamber orchestra or a cultural organization would perform. Highlights in the orchestra’s history were its concert tours to England, Russia, Italy and to its twin town Frankenberg in Saxony. In 2007 and 2010, the orchestra traveled to the Austrian province Burgenland as a musical ambassador. There it played in the famous historical “Haydn-Hall” of Esterhazy castle in Eisenstadt where Joseph Haydn worked for nearly 30 years. This was an outstanding event because only two other guest ensembles had played there before. Furthermore, the high numbers of performances of Operas and operettas like Saint-Saens’ “Carnival of the Animals”, Mozart’s “Bastien and Bastiennne” or Mozart´s “Magic Flute” should be noticed. Moreover, the orchestra performed several Masses, but also Crossover-Programs named “Rock meets Classic” (20062012). In July 2006, the orchestra played an open air concert in Frankenberg for the first time which was very successful and thus started an annual tradition called “Frankenberger Open Air Classic” with Soloists like Prof. Justus Frantz in front of 1.200 guests. The orchestra’s repertoire includes classical as well as romantic symphony movements and concertos, program music, operettas and musicals, film and rock music, pieces for Big Band and also a modern piece with graphic notation. Moreover, there are some ensembles playing chamber music, jazz and pieces especially for the brass section. Some members of the orchestra learned their instruments in brass bands or other local music groups. Most of the pupils, however, took lessons in Frankenberg’s music school which cooperates closely with the school orchestra and gives lessons in the rooms of the Edertal School. Furthermore some of the young musicians have been educated in special orchestra classes. These classes are part of a special concept which was developed only recently and is extremely popular among pupils and their parents. Markus Wagener
