With the Anyone with an eye on the long-term economic processes in his company or who acts in the interest of the environment uses smart metering for other media too. development of the smart electricity meter ELICIUS, Diehl Metering now completes its “Smartline” comprising HYDRUS for water, SHARKY for thermal energy, AERIUS for gas – and the new ELICIUS for electricity. Energy utilities can now use all the overarching opportunities offered by smart metering – and open up totally new business segments. The amendment of the Energy Management Act by the German government in summer 2011 also created a legally binding foundation for the energy of the future. This increases the pressure on the industry to reorganize the energy supply, especially in the electricity segment. Electricity is driving the energy of the future The great challenge for electricity utilities is to reconcile the generation and consumption of electricity, because at the moment electrical energy cannot be stored efficiently by technical means. Especially renewable energy can only be practicably fed into the electricity grids via a high-resolution consumption and grid monitoring system. On the other hand, the end customers must be informed of their consumption in a better way. Legislators all over the world are demanding drastic savings in energy consumption, so it is only a question of time before fair monthly billing of consumption and transparent customer communication become the norm. Smart metering becomes the control tool The solution is called smart metering. Full consumption transparency enables the actual energy required to be determined down to the minute. If the supply grid contains excessive power, windmills can be flexibly turned away from the wind – and photovoltaic systems switched in or out. On the consumer side, the end customers can be encouraged to adapt their consumption through more attractive tariffs. Changing tariffs at 15-minute intervals is possible without problems with the current state of technology. Similar to mobile telephony, tariffs can be created without great effort in the BSI gateway or at the back end – and billed quickly. Diehl Metering is ready for the roll-out Diehl Metering possesses technologically outstanding system solutions for automatic meter reading (AMR) that have proved their worth in projects throughout the world for many years. The technologies were originally developed for reading water, thermal energy and gas. For example, the new all- in-one solution IZAR PLUS for 100 % efficiency and reading performance: all energy data are supplied reliably – at any time, fully automatically and processed ready for energy services and billing. With the development of the ELICIUS smart electricity meter (see double page 6/7), water, thermal energy, gas and electricity can now be read on the same smart metering platform – with continuous energy data from the meter through to data services and billing. Electricity is only the tip of the iceberg Anyone with an eye on the long-term economic processes in his company or who acts in the interest of the environment uses smart metering for other media too. Particularly the use of thermal energy has huge potential for increasing efficiency. The heat consumption of a home in kWh is usually about eight times as high as the electricity consumption in kWh. For example, a 10 % saving in heating is about eight times larger compared with electricity. The importance of economical use of thermal energy from the German government’s viewpoint can be seen from the state support measures, which flow into the insulation of roofs, windows and facades or the renewal of heating systems. In the interest of reduced CO2 emission, the efficient use of heat/ cold energy is therefore far more meaningful than reduced electricity consumption. We believe it is only a question of time before the legislators also demand intelligent monitoring and grid optimization in the thermal energy segment. The aim of the corporate philosophy of Diehl Metering is the economic and ecologically sustainable use of natural resources and energy. We certainly advise our customers to invest in smart meters, because a smart infrastructure can be developed on this basis on demand – without problems, economically and without additional parametrization of the individual meters. Smart metering is certainly the future of metering. Multi-utility providers profit in many ways Whether water, thermal energy, gas or electricity, automatic meter reading saves working time, maintenance work and money, and especially eliminates the tedious “house calls” to read the meters of end consumers. The standard and continuous flow of energy data avoids media interruptions and transmission errors as well as the resulting booking errors. Leaks or energy losses are detected immediately and can be specifically cleared, and grids are loaded at the optimum level. In short, smart metering provides an efficient and future-orientated basis for the energy utility’s internal processes. Multi-utility providers profit in many ways, because meters for water, thermal energy, gas and electricity can be smoothly integrated into one and the same smart solution, also retrospectively. So an investment opens up a host of new possibilities. For example, all consumption readings for a home can be called up at the same time – and listed in the same bill. Monthly billing on the basis of valid data can in future eliminate the need for the instalment payments usual until now. “Smartline” sends at the highest standard All meters in Diehl Metering’s “Smartline” – i.e. HYDRUS, SHARKY, AERIUS and the new ELICIUS – are equipped with radio communication ex works. The Open Metering System (OMS) specification ensures smooth integration into a smart meter network without any subsequent parametrization. Diehl Metering is the only company that can consistently meet the high data protection requirements stipulated by the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) for all four media on the same platform – water, thermal energy, gas and electricity. 6 7 smarter #1 June 2014 All the advantages of the Diehl Metering system landscape are now also available for the electricity segment. ELICIUS will be available as early as the start of 2015. ELICIUS electronic electricity meter Smart Metering inside Diehl Metering is developing the new ELICIUS electricity meter specifically for the future requirements of smart metering. Every meter is equipped with integrated radio communication ex works – and can be incorporated into a smart system solution immediately. As “energy data supplier” ELICIUS makes electricity consumption transparent – quickly and efficiently. What do we expect from an electricity meter? We asked ourselves this question during the design of ELICIUS. It was soon clear that, in addition to measuring accuracy and reliability, smooth integration into smart metering and system solutions should be a main characteristic of ELICIUS. Like all the other meters in Diehl Metering’s “Smartline” – HYDRUS for water, SHARKY for thermal energy and AERIUS for gas – ELICIUS also communicates with a BSI gateway and thus complies with the high requirements of the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI). The concept: one step smarter Many electricity meters are ready for smart metering, but ELICIUS is supplied already equipped with smart metering: the integrated radio module sends data to the Open Metering System specification (OMS) as soon as the meter is installed. The combination of Diehl Metering’s tried-and-tested radio technology and its design as a “smart meter for mass roll-out” shows the real strength of ELICIUS: All the advantages of the Diehl Metering system landscape are now also available for the electricity segment. And, of course, the unique design also ensures that ELICIUS is recognized at first glance as a representative of the Diehl Metering “Smartline”. ELICIUS will be available as early as the start of 2015. So all that is necessary to set up a smart metering infrastructure is to collect the meter data – either in walk-by/drive-by mode or via a radio-based fixed network. The meters are integrated without additional parametrization and without tedious house calls to end consumers. Smart metering for household customers too The introduction of electronic meters is already settled. According to the guidelines issued by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, however, only consumers with an annual consumption of over 6,000 kWh should be equipped with a metering system comprising an electricity meter and gateway. We at Diehl Metering are convinced that smart metering also offers nothing but advantages for household customers. So why should conventional meters (or intelligent meters without integrated communication) still be installed in 2014, when an absolutely future-orientated technology can also be made available for all household customers for the same cost? ELICIUS is designed for the household segment – and has “smart metering inside” – even for consumption of less than 6,000 kWh per household. Whether our customers use this property right from the start, or first set up their smart infrastructure in a few years’ time, is something each must decide for himself. The meter is certainly ready. ELICIUS stands for accuracy, security and clarity The ELICIUS intelligent multiphase meter complies with the IEC and CENELEC standards for energy meters and is designed for the market of private and small commercial energy consumers. The accurate and secure meter stands out for its simple and reliable technology, excels with its modern design and has a clearly arranged information display for showing the consumption figures and network parameters determined. The tried-and-tested Diehl Metering communication technology and many other functions are integrated ex works and every meter can be incorporated into a smart metering infrastructure for walk-by/drive-by and fixed network operation. Additional radio or wire-based communication modules can be inserted into a module compartment in the top part of the meter housing. ELICIUS is ready for IZAR PLUS – and achieves 100 % reading performance as part of this new all-in-one solution from Diehl Metering. 8 9 smarter #1 June 2014 IZAR PLUS Portal Central platform for smart data The energy of the future is on its way. It requires the development of a new infrastructure, which particularly increases the importance of information and communication technologies. The IZAR PLUS Portal developed by Diehl Metering offers the central software and control platform for all data flows. We are therefore supporting the efforts of the energy utilities to develop new fields of activity and potential revenues. The software can be simply leased via the IZAR PLUS Portal. The redistribution from investment costs to operating costs provides financial planning security and minimizes risks. The energy of the future demands a totally new perception of integrated data management that takes into account the generation and provision of resources and energy on the one hand and reflects the consumption of these on the other – if possible in real time. It pays to plan on a cross-media basis In its amendment of the Energy Management Act in 2011 the German government calls for the conversion of the line-based energy supply. The equipment used for electricity and gas supply is to be appreciably improved with smart meters and metering systems. But when energy utilities actually invest in smart technologies, it is recommended that the consumption data for all media are managed over the same infrastructure – the synergetic advantages and financial savings are immense. Especially when it comes to setting up data services, the use of software and information and communication technologies gains in importance – and offers the industry new possibilities for activities and revenues. For example, monthly billing showing the actual consumption of water, thermal energy, gas and electricity is already possible from a technological viewpoint. The until now usual instalment payments with the associated extra effort for further demands and transfers due to moving home would be a thing of the past. IZAR PLUS Portal offers full service The IZAR PLUS Portal developed by Diehl Metering is a state-of-the-art central software platform based on web technology. All software services will be combined under this roof in future – energy utilities are to enjoy a full service. The concept focuses on reflecting the complete data flow, from the network connection to the operation of the measuring point, according to market and medium. Service processes are also displayed on the same platform. Diehl Metering as provider takes over the complete IT administration and other services like maintenance work and updates, tasks that are not noticed by customers in the best case. All software services of the IZAR PLUS Portal are developed so that they also offer the option of being set up as an independent system on the servers of large customers. Simply lease software instead of buying Diehl Metering’s IZAR PLUS Portal is intended for energy utilities, municipal associations and local authorities, large industrial companies and local heating utilities. Experience shows that many customers would like demand-based and flexible use of IT services. So the software no longer needs to be installed at the customer’s in future, but can be simply leased via the new IZAR PLUS Portal. IZAR PLUS Portal provides data security The strictest data protection standards apply to Germany as a server location. Both data and system are secured in many ways, and http connections are SSLencrypted, independent of the terminal. The security standards are comparable with those of the online banking sector. The product and software are therefore operated and used “as a service”, for which a fee is charged based on the amount of use. In return, the customer saves part of the purchase and operating costs. The redistribution from investment costs to operating costs provides financial planning security and minimizes risks. The full scalability also enables the model to be adapted flexibly to future developments. The Diehl Metering Data Centre in Nuremberg is certified to ISO 27001. The capacities of the server platform are designed for processing complex smart metering data and combine high reliability with permanent availability and customer-specific flexibility. Continuous maintenance and repair, constant data security and regular updates keep the platform at the highest technological level. We’re ready for the roll-out The IZAR PLUS Portal is currently undergoing intensive testing with initial customers. The roll-out for selected customers will take place as early as the second half of 2014. The computing centre in Nuremberg will play a major role for the European market. Separate computing centres will be set up for each of the other countries and continents. The “drive-by” mode is a particularly convenient way to start automatic meter reading. Energy utilities profit from the advantages of the IZAR system technology immediately at comparatively low investment cost. 14 15 smarter #1 June 2014 All-in-one solution in Cape Town / South Africa Cutting water losses In a comprehensive analysis in 2010, Diehl Metering had determined an average water loss of 54% in the Cape Town region. The South African government looked for ways of solving this problem. The resulting cooperation has now led to the implementation of a comprehensive system solution. The government of Cape Town is very interested in expanding the solution to enable full-coverage, long-term control of water consumption. It all began in 2010 with a presentation to a political delegation headed by Helen Zille, Premier of the South African province of Western Cape. After examining the problem of the large water losses in the region, the politicians recognized the urgent necessity for finding a long-term solution. Large-scale roll-out of solution Diehl Metering proved the convincing performance of automatic meter reading technologies with a number of small pilot projects in the Khayelitsha district of the Cape Town region: Intelligent water meters were installed and read over a radio-based fixed network system with GPRS receiver. The political decision-makers were impressed by the successful solution. This enabled new leaks to be detected straight away and water losses specifically reduced. In-depth analyses in Cape Town took two years and finally led to a call for tenders for a six-digit number of water meters and their installation over a period of three to five years. Specifically solving the region’s problems To effectively counter the region’s specific problems, Diehl Metering’s partner Aqua-Loc developed an electronic valve that automatically reduces the water flow in daily consumption – leaking toilets are one of the main causes of water loss. The revolutionary valve is used in the “Water Demand Management System” (WDMS). A WDMS box contains the integrated valve plus a Diehl Metering measuring capsule meter with a suitable clip-on radio module. The basic principle: as soon as a certain daily flow rate is reached, this is reduced to a minimum – and opened again from midnight onwards. Cost-effective expansion into a fixed network The combination of WDMS, Diehl Metering meter and radio module enables the installation to be expanded to a radio-based fixed network without great cost. It is only necessary to install data loggers; the meters do not require any additional configuration. The government of Cape Town is very interested in further development and expansion of the solution to enable full-coverage, long-term control of water consumption. The roll-out has already started and will be systematically extended during the summer. Plans are also in progress for covering other regions in Khayelitsha with a fixed network from Diehl Metering. Coordination via the new IZAR PLUS Portal Another parallel approach is being tested at the moment: The new IZAR PLUS Portal (see double page 8/9) can provide the Cape Town administration with a full software solution. The IZAR PLUS Portal serves the complete data flow from meter to energy services and can be used to evaluate the individual consumption measurements – automatically and highly efficiently. IZAR@Mobile is a particularly user-friendly software that supports all activities in the field – from initial installation and registration of the meters and meter data management to semi-automatic reading of set day values and other applications. The use of a standard data platform creates a variety of synergies in terms of security, availability and maintenance. Those responsible in Cape Town benefit from 24-hour monitoring, scalable costs, continuous updates, debugging, backups and lots more. Diehl Metering solution has many advantages The Cape Town government profits from the new solution in many ways: The total amount of water to be provided is reduced and continuous monitoring of consumption is also possible. Leaks are detected as soon as they occur and can be repaired without delay. With valid data as a basis, the bill for the actual consumption can now be sent to the end consumer costeffectively. Instalment or advance payments based on estimates are no longer necessary. Those responsible are delighted with the efficiency, performance and cost-effectiveness of the new solution – other projects are planned in the region. 16 17 smarter #1 June 2014 ALTAIR rotary piston water meter SHARKY ultrasonic energy meter The innovative classic It sends and sends and sends The ALTAIR rotary piston water meter has been a reliable measuring instrument for a The 1,000,000th SHARKY ultrasonic energy meter has rolled off the Hydrometer production long time. Due to its integrated requirements of the new Drinking Water Ordinance. The measuring capsule meter communication it has been used with great success in system projects all over the world. is also supplied with an integrated coupling head – for time-saving installation. SHARKY has been produced since 1999 and is an original development by Diehl Metering. SHARKY has stood for optimum accuracy over many years. It regularly proves its long-term performance in the AGFW endurance test. ALTAIR MCI has also been available as a complete meter since February 2014. All the materials used comply with the strict standards of the new Drinking Water Ordinance. This technology is pure gold: The 1,000,000th SHARKY ultrasonic energy meter has been produced at Diehl Metering in Ansbach – as an exclusive gold version for the anniversary celebration. The ALTAIR rotary piston water meter is a good example of synergies created through cooperation within Diehl Metering: ALTAIR is a development of the French business unit Sappel, which has several decades of experience in developing rotary piston meters. Precision – in installation too Besides its high measuring accuracy and long-term stability, ALTAIR is ideal for everyday use. In the ALTAIR MCI measuring capsule meter, the measuring capsule and plastic coupling head are now integrated into one part, which substantially reduces the effort for replacement. The improved hydraulics ensure higher precision and reduced noise. The low starting flow rate also enables accurate measurement down to the smallest flow rate of 2 l/h. The concept of ALTAIR MCI is uncomplicated: the meter is self-cleaning and suspended solids are expelled by the piston. ALTAIR can be mounted in any desired position. The drum counter can be rotated by 350° for easier reading. Innovative sip by sip ALTAIR MCI has also been available as a complete meter since February 2014 – with the option of brass or plastic for optimum fulfilment of all customer requirements. All the materials used comply with the strict standards of the new Drinking Water Ordinance. Those wanting to be on the safe side choose the plastic version, as there is a clear trend towards lead-free materials in drinking water installations. Only a clip-on module – with radio or pulse option – needs to be added to integrate the ALTAIR rotary piston water meter into automatic meter reading (AMR) or smart metering systems. It’s so easy to make ALTAIR a smart communication interface. SHARKY celebrated its 15th birthday at the same time as delivery of the 1,000,000th meter. The heat and cooling meter has been optimized over several generations since it appeared on the market in 1999, so today’s SHARKY is a technologically sophisticated meter with a proven track record of many years – and since 2012 with a new design too. Premium solution for all requirements Energy utilities throughout the world rely on the SHARKY ultrasonic meter for metering local and district heating and cooling. District heating and submetering are today’s most frequent applications for SHARKY, and it is also used in solar and heat pump systems. SHARKY has stood for optimum accuracy over many years. It regularly proves its long-term performance in the AGFW (Association for Energy Efficiency in Heating, Cooling and Cogeneration) endurance test. This test checks the accuracy and long-term perfor- mance of heat and cooling meters, partly under extreme conditions. SHARKY has always obtained the highest rating in all AGFW tests so far – with five out of five stars. SHARKY is one of Diehl Metering’s success stories and will also set the standard for intelligent metering of thermal energy in the future. The works in Ansbach can look back on many years of success and growth. The management stressed the importance of SHARKY and thanked the staff for their outstanding achievements at a small anniversary celebration. 18 19 smarter #1 June 2014 Companies in the Diehl Metering Group – EWT Future-compatible through rich experience The smarter magazine regularly portrays the companies in the Diehl Metering Group, this time Elin Wasserwerkstechnik – abbreviated to EWT. This old-established company supplies the Austrian market and its export markets with all products and solutions in the Diehl Metering spectrum from its base in Vienna. Active cooperation We cooperate with Lebenshilfe, because we have a responsibility – and because it is an enhancement for every employee at Hydrometer. Renaming the company Diehl Metering GesmbH underlines this strategic course, because in future EWT is also part of the powerful, joint and international brand. Vienna and EWT share a long history. The first water meters were produced in the 1920s under the company’s name of “Siemens-Halske”, later as “WSW – Wiener Schwachstromwerke” and from 1972 onwards by the nationalized “Elin Union”. The company was privatized in 1993 and incorporated into the Hungarian water meter producer “MOM – Magyar Optikai Müvek” (Hungarian Optical Works) in 1995. EWT has been part of today’s Diehl Metering since 2001. Number one in Austria, strong in export EWT is a purely sales company with a staff of currently 59 and the Austrian market leader in the business fields of water and thermal energy. The company is also very successful in selling innovative solutions for automatic meter reading. Besides the capital Vienna, EWT’s customers include all eight capitals of the Austrian states. The countries of the former Yugoslavia and the South European region have been supported by EWT from Austria for many years. Besides metering technologies for water and thermal energy, EWT supplies test stations and equipment for repair workshops. Strategic development of gas and electricity segment The integrated sales concept of Diehl Metering has been adapted to provide a powerful answer to the new challenges of the international markets. EWT now also offers metering technologies for gas and electricity. The mutual goal as part of Diehl Metering is clear: EWT supplies products, solutions and services for the economic and sustainable use of natural resources and energy. For all markets and customer requirements – from small local authority to large energy utility. Renaming the company Diehl Metering GesmbH underlines this strategic course, because in future EWT is also part of the powerful, joint and international brand. The long-term partnership between Hydrometer and Lebenshilfe – an organization for people with disabilities – is not only for Corporate Social Responsibility reasons, but because it is good to work together with people with a totally different background to their lives – and nevertheless achieve the best results together. People from Lebenshilfe have worked in our production facility in Apolda for as long as 20 years. We have also had good experience in Ansbach, where a group from the Westmittelfränkische Lebenshilfe Werkstätten GmbH in Brodswinden has taken over light assembly work. Finally, we had the idea of integrating a team of twelve employees, a group leader and a social service directly into production at Hydrometer. The people from Lebenshilfe feel they are part of Hydrometer, enjoy their responsible work and are fully accepted by their fellow employees. This variety is a real enhancement for our corporate culture. The model is also proving valuable for Hydrometer: The full integration ensures an optimized flow of values, smooth logistics and high flexibility.
