Conditions and entry form for Essentially Ellington
Dear Musical Directors,
This year the WA Schools Jazz Festival will host the Essentially Ellington Competition and
teachers conference in conjunction with Jazz at the Lincoln Centre. This year the first
Essentially Ellington Down Under Regional Festival will be held on 7th and 8th August 2016 at
John Septimus Roe Anglican Community School.
The festival will have a big band competition on August 7th where high school big bands will
perform a 20 minute set including at least one chart from the entire Essentially Ellington library
that includes their levels. You can get .zip versions of these charts by contacting Maegan
McHugh from Jazz at Lincoln Center at mmchugh@jazz.org
In addition to the competition, every band will be adjudicated by a local adjudicator and a “Jazz
at Lincoln Center” adjudicator. Each band will receive a live recording with real-time verbal
feedback as well as comprehensive written feedback from the adjudicators. In addition to this,
every band will receive a personal 30 minute workshop with their adjudicators immediately
after their performance.
We will also hold a full day band director workshop with the two “Jazz at Lincoln Center”
clinicians that we’re calling a teacher’s conference on August 8th. The focus of the teacher’s
conference will be on working with student rhythm sections, selecting repertoire, teaching
beginning improvisation and the basic fundamentals of jazz syntax. It will also be very
beneficial, as the Jazz at Lincoln Center clinicians would have seen all the high school big bands
and would be able to deliver specific information that they feel will help the directors.
The cost of the competition is $295 and the teacher’s conference is $150 per person, however if
you sign up both the competition and teachers conference you can get a $50 discount on the
first teacher registration. Also, if you sign up more than 4 teachers to the teacher’s conference,
the price is reduced to $100 per person.
We’d love for your school to be involved in this unique opportunity and we’re really keen to get
the Essentially Ellington program up and running in schools in Australia. We really feel that this
is a great way to push the standard of high school big bands in Australia and get kids swingin’!
There’s a plethora of resources to assist in teaching and rehearsing Essentially Ellington charts
at http://academy.jalc.org/ee
If you’d like any further information, please don’t hesitate to contact Nick Quigley.
