Innovation for more quality of life
„Creating Performance Technology“ is Süd-Chemie’s mission. All its products and
technologies, whether adsorbents or catalysts, refine high-quality industrial
products and allow for more efficient use of natural resources. This enhances the
quality of human life and preserves the environment. It also represents the key
common denominator linking all six Business Units in the Süd-Chemie Group.
Operations began over a hundred and fifty years ago
with the production of phosphate fertilizer in Heufeld,
near Munich, creating a cornerstone for the development of modern farming in Bavaria and Germany.
Süd-Chemie’s artificial fertilizer made a significant
contribution to combating the widespread famine
prevailing at that time, helping to lay the foundation
for the rise of today’s industrial society.
This first innovation was to be followed by many more
during the company’s long history. As a result of
mergers, restructurings and acquisitions, new activities were added, including the bleaching earth and
subsequently the catalyst business. The portfolio has
expanded significantly over the past one and half
centuries, but the company’s goal of creating inno-

The World of Süd-Chemie
vations for more quality of life has remained. Today,
Süd-Chemie, represented by its two divisions of Adsorbents and Catalysts, ranks among the leading
market players in the field of independent specialty
chemicals manufacturers.
Focus on markets of the future
Today, the nutritional problems of the nineteenth
century have given way to the challenges of emission
control, new sources of energy and sparing use of
natural resources. These markets of the future, in
which Süd-Chemie is excellently positioned with its
products and solutions, are both demanding and
attractive. Focus on the company’s own strengths,
target-oriented research, close proximity to its
markets and innovative products are the key to
biocatalysis and biorefinery. Fuel-cell technology
based on hydrogen and methanol also promises
tremendous innovation potential and positive growth
prospects, whereby high-performance catalysts are
needed to produce both these base materials. As a
long-standing market leader in this technology,
Süd-Chemie will make it possible to realize the
changeover to new sources of energy based on a
strategy that is both in line with market demands
and profitable, and that paves the way to the future.
Progress for industry and environment
For Süd-Chemie, industry and the environment belong
together, since new eco-friendly developments also
provide impetus for ongoing growth. To really boost
this impetus, the company relies on its own research
and on strategic partnerships. Its success speaks for
itself. Süd-Chemie is one of the major driving forces
behind technology for fresh water and clean air. Its
products for treating drinking water and effluents are
in high demand, notably in Asia, South America and
Southern Africa. The same applies to its products for
air pollution control in Europe, North America and
Asia. More stringent emission standards call for new
solutions, for instance to purify diesel exhausts in the
automobile industry. Süd-Chemie already holds the
key with its technology and specialty catalysts.
Innovative energy-storage systems represent another
important step and could achieve a break-through
for hybrid engines, thanks to Süd-Chemie’s new
generation of lithium-ion batteries equipped with an
eco-friendly cathode material, lithium iron phosphate.
This replaces the environmentally harmful lithium
cobalt oxide previously used, improves safety and is
much more powerful – an element of progress offering
great growth opportunities. The list of other growth
drivers is long and includes the huge demand for
bleaching earth in Asia, as well as specialty chemicals for the fast-growing, global tunnel-construction
sector, packaging technology for transporting
goods and new high-performance solutions for the
booming foundry industry, to name only a few.
More than 150 years of future
From the day it was formed, Süd-Chemie has
worked on technologies offering future potential
and ongoing process enhancement. Since then,
many of Süd-Chemie’s innovations have changed
the world, resulting in added comfort, safety and
sustainable economic growth – a success story that
is still being written each day by qualified researchers
and highly-motivated staff.
Geared to growth
Today, Süd-Chemie is active in key growth
markets, poised on the leading edge of
progress – for the good of industry, the
environment and our quality of life.

success. This is why Süd-Chemie cooperates closely
with customers and partners, as well as with universities and research institutes throughout the
world. The dynamic growth achieved on the basis
of this strategy is demonstrated by the Group’s key
figures, growth drivers being an ongoing improvement
process and consistent use of its global technology
platform. These make Süd-Chemie more and more
successful each year.
Customer-oriented innovation
A growth strategy, that is both sustainable and
systematic is one major factor for success, excellent
products another. Süd-Chemie’s activities in the fields
of research, development, sales and services are,
therefore, consistently focused on customers and
partners. This is the only way to develop solutions
in line with market needs and ensure customized
implementation. As a result, Süd-Chemie enhances
the efficiency of its customers, boosting their competitive lead. This strategy works well, successful
customers being a guarantee for the company’s
own success, for global market strength, rising
profits, attractive jobs and a sustained increase in
shareholder value.
drive and promote such talent, giving rise to a wide
diversity of knowledge and experience. In turn, this
creates an inspiring working environment and
generates top-class performance throughout the
entire Group. That is the key to success.
Accepting responsibility
At the same time, environment, health, safety and
quality are given top priority. In every area of
activity, be it research, production, purchasing or
sales, Süd-Chemie is always aware of its responsibility
to customers and employees, neighbors and the
environment. This is reflected in numerous environmental certificates and audits, as well as in the high
quality of its products. Together, these form a
foundation for global success, a foundation on
which Süd-Chemie will continue to build in the
future.
Ready for the future

The World of Süd-Chemie 5
Quality of life from nature’s treasures
Chemicals for optimizing products and processes are vital elements in specialty
chemistry, an area in which Süd-Chemie is among the world’s leading companies.
Its adsorbents and additives improve value chains in numerous industries, ensuring
more quality of life.
The most important raw material for Süd-Chemie’s
adsorbents and additives is bentonite. This clay
mineral has unique physical and chemical properties, making it interesting for a whole range
of industrial processes.
As a versatile layered silicate, it constitutes a
natural and clean eco-friendly product that
can be used even in the food-processing and
consumer-goods industries.
Multitalented bentonite
Thanks to its molecular structure, bentonite is an
excellent medium for binding other substances
and chemicals, its lamellate layers having a huge
inner surface area. Added to this strong binding
power is a high ion-exchanging capacity, giving
rise to a combination that makes the layered
6
Adsorbents and Additives
silicate the first choice for filtering undesirable
ingredients or impurities out of solutions and
replacing them with harmless substances.
Bentonite is also interesting for its highly thixotropic
qualities. This clay mineral allows suspensions to be
created which can easily alter their state of aggregation from liquid to solid.
Customized solutions
Greater efficiency, more ecological benefits and
better quality for its customers are Süd-Chemie’s
goals. These call for products tailored exactly to
each customer’s manufacturing process. The
company’s Adsorbents and Additives Business
Unit meets these high demands by using a special
process to activate its bentonite, selectively enhancing certain key characteristics of this clay mineral.
Adsorbents
and Additives
This results in activated bentonite which either
improves the performance of a customer’s finished
product or modifies intermediate products in such a
way that the manufacturing process itself is optimized.
Süd-Chemie – global leader
As the world’s largest supplier of bentonite-based
adsorbents and additives, Süd-Chemie continuously
increases its market lead. To this end, the company
is expanding in attractive and dynamic growth regions,
such as Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe.
Consistently high quality, innovative developments
and reliable, worldwide service and consultancy
offerings underpin this leading position in all sectors.
Established meets innovative
This Business Unit offers a portfolio of
established products and compelling
innovations. This combination makes
Süd-Chemie the world’s leading supplier
of adsorbents and additives.
The Adsorbents and Additives Business Unit
consists of four Industry Groups active in the
sectors of Food and Feed Additives, Foundry
Additives, Detergent and Paper Additives and
Specialties, as well as Civil Engineering.
Food and Feed Additives –
number one for healthy pleasure
Food should offer a feast for the eyes. However,
without Süd-Chemie’s adsorbents and additives,
many a delightful culinary sight would not be
possible today, for these products are mainly
used to clarify and bleach foodstuffs.
The production of crystal-clear wine and golden
cooking and salad oil would not be possible without
bentonite products to bind every single molecule
of undesirable harmful substances and suspended
matter. The good thing is that Süd-Chemie’s adsorbents and additives are pure, natural products,
being eco-friendly and of no danger to health. Due
to their effect and their clay-mineral basis, they are
also referred to as bleaching earth.
A hundred years of experience
Süd-Chemie has a hundred years of experience in
the bleaching-earth sector. Customers from all over
the world value this competence and its head start
in the field of product development. Almost all
vegetable oils are for instance treated with
Süd-Chemie products, including soya, palm and
rapeseed oil, as well as salad oil extracted from
sunflower seeds, maize and cottonseed.
The total market, which currently amounts to
around one hundred million tons a year, is vast and
Adsorbents and Additives 7
will continue to grow at a constant rate – a trend
from which Süd-Chemie will derive above-average
benefits.
the manufacture of foodstuffs. Süd-Chemie identified
this trend at an early stage and is excellently
prepared to meet it.
Süd-Chemie’s adsorbents are also indispensable
in other food-refining processes, such as purifying
and clarifying fruit juice, wine and beer and ensuring gentle, natural treatment of baby foods. This
is quality of life that not only does us good, but
also tastes good.
It has already gained a leading market position
which is being systematically expanded based on
the company’s own bentonite mines, new production facilities and highly-qualified local employees
and partners. This combination of bundled competence and market proximity creates the best basis
for exploiting growth potential.
Good for humans and animals
Not only are human beings benefiting from
Süd-Chemie’s bleaching-earth products. For several years, new and innovative developments have
also been applied in the animal feed industry. On
a natural basis, they protect feed against fungal
toxins and other contaminating substances, contributing to healthy livestock. This provides effective
value added for the feed industry, agriculture and
consumers alike.
Süd-Chemie currently produces bleaching earth at
nine sites on four continents, the Moosburg plant in
Germany being the center for food additives which
are marketed worldwide.
Ready for the future
In view of the rapidly rising prosperity in Asia,
Eastern Europe and the Middle East, these areas are
developing growth markets for adsorbents used in
8
Adsorbents and Additives
Prosperity creates demand
Demand for food additives is rising rapidly,
not only in the boom areas of Asia and
Eastern Europe. From its own locations
around the globe, Süd-Chemie serves these
growth regions on a local basis, benefiting
from their in-depth knowledge of the market.
Foundry Additives –
in good shape with bentonite
Bentonite is indispensable for mechanical moldmanufacturing. It adds the necessary stability and
strength to the molding sand, ensuring that metal
can be successfully cast and molded with great
precision. This process gives rise to high-quality
castings, such as engine blocks for the automobile
industry. Today, more than 70% of all iron castings,
some 30% of copper castings and 15% of aluminum castings are produced in molds which use
bentonite as a binding agent to provide the necessary
strength and resistance. Süd-Chemie offers the
bentonite products essential for these processes
coupled with comprehensive consultancy services,
as well as developing bespoke solutions together
with its customers.
Growth market in the automobile industry
More and more foundry products are being made
for the automobile industry which is recording a high
level of stable growth, especially in Europe and North
America. Added to this is the future potential offered
by Asian markets. These have been gathering
considerable momentum for some years now and are
set to continue their extremely dynamic expansion.
Süd-Chemie already holds a strong market position,
both in Europe and on the world market for
bentonite-based foundry additives. To further pro-
mote expansion in Asia’s booming economies, it
has meanwhile installed its own production plants
in China, Korea and Indonesia, paving the way for
sustained ongoing growth – and Süd-Chemie will
be adhering to this course.
Twin-pack know-how
Bundling competencies and bringing together
know-how beyond the limits of individual responsibility is one of Süd-Chemie’s basic principles. The
Foundry Additives Industry Group belonging to the
Adsorbents and Additives Business Unit therefore
cooperates very closely with the company’s
Foundry Products and speciality Resins Business
Unit. The advantage for customers is that, via its
partner network, Süd-Chemie can offer one of the
widest product ranges of chemicals and products
available to the foundry industry worldwide. Thus,
together with its affiliates, Süd-Chemie is Europe’s
only full-service provider of speciality chemicals for
iron castings.
Mobile and fast-growing
The automobile industry is one of the largest
purchasers of foundry bentonites – and
volumes are still rising, especially in Asia,
thus creating added impetus for Süd-Chemie’s
growth.
Adsorbents and Additives 9
Detergents, Paper Additives and
Specialties – clean, effective and ecofriendly
Today’s industrial value chain for the production of
detergents, paper and ceramics would also be unthinkable without Süd-Chemie’s bentonite-based
additives and adsorbents. These are supplied to industries in Europe, North America and key growth
regions in Asia and Latin America.
Clear ecological advantage
The ecologically beneficial detergent additives produced by Süd-Chemie are added directly to washing
powder or tabs and offer numerous additional advantages for both manufacturers and consumers.
On the one hand, detergent bentonite makes laundry
soft and gentle on the skin and offers a cost-effective
and eco-friendly alternative to liquid softeners. These
additives also serve as a carrier for active substances
and other auxiliary agents required in detergents
and can be tinted any color. The advantage for
manufacturers is that with the help of Süd-Chemie’s
additives their detergents and washing powders
can be easily produced bearing a distinctive color
identity.
The world detergent market is highly competitive,
but very stable in terms of volume. Süd-Chemie’s
additives help detergent manufacturers to differentiate their products from the competition, provi-
10
Adsorbents and Additives
ding a competitive advantage that makes the company a valued partner. Added to this are constantly
new and highly eco-friendly developments which
Süd-Chemie uses to promote global expansion of
its already strong market position.
Partner to the paper industry
In the paper industry, Süd-Chemie’s additives enhance the quality and printability of paper surfaces.
A wide service spectrum rounds off its range of highperformance products, making Süd-Chemie a highlyesteemed partner in this sector among customers
in Europe, Asia and the Americas.
A market of special ecological importance is wastepaper processing. In this segment, Süd-Chemie’s
additives filter out toxic heavy metals and other impurities from recycled material and help to conserve
valuable resources. Thanks to rising environmental
standards across the world, this sector offers good
growth opportunities on an international scale.
Innovative ceramics
Süd-Chemie’s adsorbents also play an important
role in the manufacture of high-grade ceramic
products used in the construction of residential
housing and in industry, helping to refine the
finished goods.
Civil Engineering –
breakthrough in a niche market
In the civil-engineering sector, bentonite-based
additives stabilize all kinds of boreholes, as well
as supporting diaphragm walls and slurry walls.
Süd-Chemie’s bentonite additives also play an
important role in tunnel construction, providing
effective support for shafts while tunnels are being
driven. Mixed with water, these additives form a
firm, but pumpable suspension that prevents the
driving face from collapsing during tunneling work
and facilitates removal of the earth through pipes.
Without this, tunnel construction would be impossible in many places. Technically sophisticated
projects are currently underway in Germany, for
instance in Hamburg, Cologne, Leipzig and Munich.
Other important European markets are Spain, Switzerland and Austria. Moreover, Asia’s metropolitan
areas will be offering especially interesting growth
markets for Süd-Chemie’s civil engineering additives
already in the years to come.
A technically different construction method is controlled horizontal drilling. This allows communication
lines, as well as all kinds of supply and disposal
pipes, to be laid cost-effectively, yet without harming
the environment. Increasing use is being made of this
technique outside urban areas, for instance in the
construction of oil and gas pipelines. Süd-Chemie
additives help to break up the ground and extract
drilled material from boreholes. They also keep boreholes open and stable until the pipeline has been
inserted. Once again Asia, particularly Siberia and
China, as well as the mega-metropolitan areas of the
future, offer interesting market potential in this sector.
World leader in tunnel and pipeline construction
Süd-Chemie leads the world market for additives
for tunnel construction and horizontal drilling. Its
customers, mostly international construction companies, rely on the high product quality, as well as
exhaustive on-the-spot applications, know-how and
consultancy services offered by Süd-Chemie experts.
Examples of completed projects are plentiful and
include construction of a pipeline between Germany’s
largest oil rig Mittelplate in the North Sea and the
port of Brunsbüttel at the mouth of the River Elbe.
In addition, Süd-Chemie is currently engaged in
Malaysia’s largest tunneling project, SMART, while
plans for many other construction and drilling projects are currently being drawn up and will be
realized over the next few years.
Tunnel-building boom
Across the world, more and more tunnels are
being built and pipelines laid. Süd-Chemie’s
products increase the efficiency of the various
drilling processes.

The Foundry Products and Specialty Resins Business
Unit comprises Industry Groups for Foundry Products
and Specialty Resins.
Foundry Products –
maximum all-round performance
During the casting process, solid bodies with complex
forms are created from molten metallic materials.
In many cases, sand is used to produce internal and
external molds for the relevant castings, which then
determine the geometry of the required workpiece.
Both bentonite products and various specialty resins
are used to bind these molds. The internal mold,
which subsequently creates cavities in the casting,
is also known as the core. During casting, the metal
flows over filters in a molten mass and into the cavities between the molding box and the core. After
the molten metal has cooled and hardened, both
the molding box and the core are removed, releasing
the finished casting.
Foundry Products and Specialty Resins 15
Süd-Chemie and its partners supply the specialty
chemicals, consultancy services and tailor-made
products required for almost every manufacturing
stage and every process in the course of foundry
operations. These include binding and hardening
agents, as well as bentonite products, the latter
being used in molding boxes to optimize the properties of the sand. Based on the combined competence
of the Süd-Chemie alliance, products also include
customized cores and release agents for superior
separation, as required at various process stages.
Core coatings, or so-called refractory coatings,
supplied by the Ashland-Südchemie Group also
avoid defects during casting, while AshlandSüdchemie-Lüngen’s advanced feeders prevent
any flaws in the castings themselves.
Full-service offering
The range of products is supplemented by filters
from the Ashland-Südchemie Group which serve as
barriers against impurities in the molten metal.
Special aids to optimize the metallurgical structure
of finished castings complete the offering. Close
cooperation with the Foundry Additives Industry
Group in Süd-Chemie’s Adsorbents and Additives
Business Unit allows for optimal adaptation of the
product portfolio to meet customer needs. This has
given rise to a wealth of competence and ability that
is unequalled anywhere in the world, along with
continuously rising sales and constant growth in
almost all key markets.

This Industry Group develops and produces packaging systems for the pharmaceutical, diagnostic and
nutraceutical industries. Its solutions protect sensitive goods against humidity, oxygen, ultraviolet rays
and mechanical damage during storage, as well as
offering significant functional advantages.
As a result of globalization, increasing volumes of
sensitive goods are subject to complex supply chains
and intermodal transport systems. To protect highquality consumer, mass and industrial goods against
humidity during transport and storage, this Industry
Group develops innovative packaging systems for
the logistics, electronics and semiconductor sectors.
It also offers absorbent components for integration
into electronics equipment requiring long-term
protection.
Süd-Chemie’s strength lies in combining its knowhow in the field of plastics and adsorbents with many
years of experience in order to cooperate with worldrenowned healthcare companies. This unique combination is the basis of its success in a market that is
regionally fragmented, yet enjoys highly dynamic
growth. Süd-Chemie is meanwhile a global pioneer
in the development of pharmaceutical and diagnostics
packaging systems, aiming for ongoing expansion in
the years to come, both in its traditional markets and
in Eastern Europe, Asia and Latin America.
Pharmaceutical industry – a growing market
As much as the pharmaceutical industry, Süd-Chemie
benefits both from current demographic changes
and medical progress. Even at the development stage,
it works together with manufacturers on new products
and solutions which range from senior-friendly and
childproof packaging to airtight packaging for sensitive
medicines posing specific stability problems.

Performance Packaging
Safe transit
Never has product safety been more important than
in this age of globalization. Süd-Chemie provides
solutions for the mounting challenges. Whether
transported by sea container, truck or even by barge,
cargo damage due to humidity is always a tremendous
risk for the logistics industry. Süd-Chemie’s range
of high-performance freight desiccant systems is
designed to adsorb large amounts of humidity and
reduce the dew point inside freight containers. In
this way, agricultural produce, foodstuffs, vehicle
components, plant and machinery are protected
from damage caused by condensation.
Electronics and semiconductors
The demand for performance and processing
capacity is high, as is the need for protection. In
the case of semiconductors, damage caused by
humidity is rarely visible to the naked eye. This
creates a problem, as damage of this kind can lead
to a considerable loss of profit and image on the
part of equipment manufacturers. The industry has
therefore developed strict packaging standards that
also apply to desiccant sachets and humidity indicators. Süd-Chemie products meet all the requirements
and lead the field in this sector. Its high-performance
adsorbents are also used in packaging electronics
and other equipment, as well as providing desiccant
protection for optical, power-generation and
chemical goods.
Mobility needs protection
In the age of globalization, the safety
of goods is more important than ever.
Süd-Chemie offers ideal solutions and
is growing with the challenge.
Plastic Additives – new
properties, new possibilities
Plastics have changed the world more than any
other material. And developments have by no
means reached their peak. A constant flow of
new additives results in ongoing optimization of
material properties and manufacturing processes.
At the same time, Süd-Chemie’s plastic additives
promote major technological progress in terms of
environmental protection. The company has, for
instance, developed hydrotalcite as a heavy-metalfree stabilizer for use in PVC production. This
represents an important step towards significantly
more eco-friendly stabilizing processes which are
already becoming established on a large scale. For
PVC is one of the most sought-after plastics in the
world today, whether in the form of cable insulation, plastic film or profiles.
Preprogrammed growth
As from 2009, the European Union has banned the
use of lead as a PVC stabilizer. Süd-Chemie is
already offering an ecologically harmless, yet highlyeffective alternative. The need is there, with
demand rising at an enormous speed following a
voluntary commitment by European PVC manufacturers to dispense with lead-based products. To
effectively benefit from this, Süd-Chemie has already
significantly expanded its hydrotalcite production
capacities for lead-free stabilizers.

Water is life
Modern chemistry improves the quality of water. Süd-Chemie’s specialty chemicals
provide for intelligent chemical water treatment and selective purification of
process water systems, industrial effluents and drinking water. Its range is
complemented by comprehensive technical services covering all aspects of water
management and making Süd-Chemie a global player in the water treatment
sector, both today and in the future.
Water – or to be more precise, fresh water – is the
basis of all life. Humans, animals and plants depend
on it as much as the world economy. However, the
availability of fresh water is limited, a fact that is
becoming increasingly evident in many regions
in the wake of the global climate change. This
makes both economically viable use and systematic recycling of water all the more important.
Süd-Chemie offers its customers the right products
and application solutions to meet this challenge,
ranging from industrial water, process and effluent
management, as well as the treatment of drinking
and process water for both domestic and industrial

treatment plants.
Growing importance of clean water
Meeting the future demand for clean drinking
and process water is one of mankind’s most urgent
tasks, since global water consumption is rising as
the world’s population grows. Accelerating industrialization in developing countries and emerging
economies is increasing this trend. Regions already
suffering from drought will be faced with even
greater water problems as a result of climatic
changes.
Water Treatment
In view of this scenario, Süd-Chemie operates in
different regional markets. In Southern Germany,
Süd-Chemie leads the market for water treatment
chemicals and water management solutions for both
urban and industrial waste water treatment plants.
In addition, it supplies water treatment solutions to
both the industry and urban districts in former
developing and emerging countries that now enjoy
rising economic activity. Having its roots in South
Africa, Süd-Chemie’s involvement in this sector is
now expanding to other growth regions in Africa,
South America and Asia. It is envisaged that organic
growth and selective acquisition of majority interests
will carry Süd-Chemie to the top of the world
market. Its course is set.
effluents, is recording tremendous growth,
especially in the Middle East, Southeast Asia
and China. Süd-Chemie will derive above-average
benefit from this momentum. The company already

South Africa, having established itself as a top
address for industrial water treatment. Yet its growth
continues. The company is now focusing on expansion into the emerging markets of South America,
the Middle East, Southeast Asia and China. In these
areas, efficient processing of industrial water is
becoming an increasingly vital factor, for both the
population and the economy.
Technology developed by Süd-Chemie is used
for instance in steel works and coal mines, as
well as in refineries, breweries and paper mills,
all operations that depend on reliable water
circuits. The same applies in the petrochemical
sector, automobile production and the foodprocessing industry.
28
Water Treatment
Potable, Effluent and Specialty
Applications – innovative process
technology
The conversion of valuable water supplies into
potable water represents a mounting challenge for
water treatment experts, based on the fact that the
chemical composition of water differs significantly
across the world. Being in short supply, no one can
however be particular about the water available for
processing. Individual and effective solutions are
needed and Süd-Chemie develops state-of-the-art
technology to realize customized projects – so
successfully, that anyone seeking solutions for the
treatment of drinking water, process water or
effluents inevitably finds competent support at
Süd-Chemie. The company’s portfolio ranges from
specialty chemicals to the design and construction
of water processing plants and on-the-spot technical
service. „Full service“ is the secret of its success,
with products, processes and services going far
beyond the treatment of waste water. The range
also includes mobile water-treatment plants to ensure supplies of drinking water in remote areas.
These have proved their worth as part of countless
disaster relief measures, for instance after the
tsunami in Southeast Asia and hurricane Katrina in
New Orleans in 2005.
Dynamic niche markets
Based on its know-how in the areas of specialty
chemistry and plant technology, Süd-Chemie is one
of the world’s leading technological players in the
field of urban, industrial and effluent water treatment.
In terms of regional expansion, the Industry Group
for Potable, Effluent and Specialty Applications
pursues the same strategy as the Classic Water
Treatment operations. Branching out from Southern
Africa, its declared goal over the next few years is to
become established as a solution provider for the
treatment of urban drinking and waste water in
numerous developing and emerging markets. As a
result, Süd-Chemie has now been active for some
time in countries such as Indonesia, Peru and Brazil,
which are marked by strong growth. Added to this, it
will continue to expand its position in regional niche
markets that show similar momentum, notably in
Southeast Asia, South America and the Middle East.
Naturally fresh and clean
Süd-Chemie supplies specialized bentonite-based
chemicals for water processing in urban and industrial waste water treatment plants. These products
are supplemented by services linked to effective
water processing and state-of-the art plant technology.
An important raw material for Süd-Chemie’s water
treatment chemicals is the clay mineral known as
bentonite. As a natural product, bentonite has two
key advantages – apart from being environmentally
compatible. Acting as both a flocculent and pre-
cipitant, it binds impurities in water, neutralizing
any possible harmful effects. When combined with
water, it also forms an impervious, elastic mass
which is excellent for sealing landfills. In this way,
the ground water is provided with effective and
eco-friendly protection against pollution.
Off to new markets
Süd-Chemie’s flocculents and precipitants purify
water in urban and industrial water treatment
plants. Thanks to its unique products, competent
consultancy and technical services, the company is
the undisputed leader on its home market of
Southern Germany. Yet sales are also growing in
other regions, a step made possible by worldwide
expansion of the Adsorbents and Additives Business Unit – flocculents and precipitants being
created as a useful by-product during the
production of bleaching earth.
Water as a growth driver
Technologies for clean drinking and process

Fuel for chemistry
Catalysts are of great significance for the chemical industry. They are used in
almost every manufacturing process. The Catalytic Technologies Business Unit
offers value-creating solutions for customers in the sectors of chemistry, petrochemistry, refinery and olefin polymerization. As an independent supplier,
Süd-Chemie is one of major players in the fields of development, production
and technical service. Based on powerful innovations, it is constantly strengthening its leading position in this market.
Catalysis plays an important role in our lives.
It serves to realize a wide range of products and
energyrelated activities that contribute to today’s
living standards and our quality of life. Catalysis
is therefore a key technology for countless industries. Shortages of demanded goods and globalization, as well as the economic growth in areas
such as Asia, the Middle East and Eastern Europe,
make efficient use of natural resources our most
important task. Each day, Süd-Chemie’s catalysts
make a significant contribution to meeting these
demands.
32
Catalytic Technologies
Catalyst-based growth
Catalysis is a phenomenon. Relatively small amounts
of a substance, a so-called catalyst, influence the
speed of a chemical reaction without being used up
in the process. Catalysts promote the selective conversion of certain chemical reagents into useful
products, consuming considerably less energy than
the same reaction conducted without this catalytic
influence. Around eighty percent of all chemical
products and fuels are manufactured with the aid of
catalysts. Sectors dependent on catalytic processes
generate annual sales of some three trillion dollars,

The Catalytic Technologies Business Unit is divided
into the four Industry Groups of Chemicals, Petrochemicals, Refinery and Olefin Polymerization.
Chemicals –
partner to the chemical industry
As a leading company in the development of
extremely powerful, efficient and long-lasting catalysts, Süd-Chemie is a reliable partner to almost all
major chemical enterprises in the world. The company develops catalysts for the manufacture of
numerous chemicals required in the production of
fertilizers, resins and adhesives, as well as solvents
and specialty chemicals. These high-performance
catalysts are for instance used in the industrial
production of ammonia, methanol, ethylene
dichloride, sulphuric acid, formaldehyde, phthalic
anhydride and maleic anhydride.
Catalytic Technologies 33
Leading catalyst supplier to the fertilizer
and methanol industries
Süd-Chemie has more than sixty years of experience
in the production and development of synthesis gas
catalysts. It holds a leading global position in this
sector, supplying the methanol and ammonia industries with high-quality catalysts. Methanol is one of
the most important chemical raw materials, currently
used mainly in the production of formaldehyde and
other chemicals. The predicted use of methanol as
a future fuel, or a source material for the production
of propylene and other olefins, will considerably
boost demand.
Today, ammonia is the second most important
synthetic chemical product. Over ninety-five
percent of the ammonia produced worldwide is
created from the two elements nitrogen and hydrogen. To this end, the industry uses a catalytic process developed by Fritz Haber and Carl Bosch
which relies on a mixed iron-oxide catalyst. Some
eighty-five percent of global ammonia production
is processed for fertilizer. Without the increased
yield generated by nitrogen fertilizer, worldwide
food shortages would be prevalent. Ammonia is
also industrially converted to nitric acid, which is
in turn used to produce plastics and fibers, as well
as hydrazine, amines, amides and other important
organic nitrogen compounds.

Catalytic Technologies
Optimal basis for chemical production
Süd-Chemie is continuously strengthening its leading
position in the market for ethylene dichloride and
formaldehyde catalysts. By expanding its oxidationcatalyst portfolio to include phthalic anhydride,
maleic anhydride and sulphuric acid catalysts, it has
opened up new market segments. Süd-Chemie now
makes a significant contribution to more efficient
production of these intermediates, which are of vital
importance in the manufacture of plastics, resins
and dyes.
Customized and specialty catalysts
As a leading, independent catalyst manufacturer,
Süd-Chemie has cooperated with customers to
develop tailor-made products since the 1960s.
From the concept phase to completion, it offers
the highest possible level of service and
confidentiality.
New opportunities, new growth
Süd-Chemie has successfully expanded its
presence in growth regions. Based on joint
ventures and an enhanced product portfolio,
it will be able to meet increasing worldwide
demand.
Petrochemicals –
know-how for innovative technology
The petrochemical industry has undergone radical changes in recent decades. New processes
have been introduced, which have opened up
new opportunities. The technology provided by
Süd-Chemie has played a major role in these
developments and is highly valued across the
world.
Süd-Chemie is a leading catalyst supplier to the
petrochemical industry, offering customized
solutions for the manufacture of petrochemical
products, such as ethylene, propylene, butadiene
and styrene. These olefins are important raw materials for the production of high-quality polymers,
such as polyethylene, polypropylene and polystyrene,
products that are required in increasing quantities
in industrialized countries and in Asian economies
registering dynamic growth.
Süd-Chemie holds a larger share of the global styrene
catalyst market than all other styrene catalyst manufacturers together. The company has also developed
an innovative catalyst for converting methanol into
propylene. The first large-scale methanol-to-propylene
(MTP) plant is currently being constructed in China,
with operation scheduled to commence in 2008.
Success along the entire value chain
To produce polypropylene from natural gas,
Süd-Chemie combines its catalyst know-how with
a unique process technology and can therefore
cover the entire value chain. During the first stage,
Süd-Chemie catalysts produce methanol from natural
gas, a by-product that is simply flared off in many oil
refineries.
Süd-Chemie makes use of this resource, processing
it into useful intermediates and ultimately opening
up a new source of added value. Innovative MTPROP®
catalysts are subsequently used to convert the
methanol into propylene, which is then converted
into polypropylene with the aid of Süd-Chemie’s
Ziegler-Natta polymerization catalysts. Based on this
process, Süd-Chemie offers customers tremendous
benefits in terms of technology and efficiency, which
in turn give rise to a significant competitive edge.
Refinery –
energy for the future
Süd-Chemie cultivates long-standing partnerships
with all leading oil companies. With a constant eye
on customer benefit, Süd-Chemie experts repeatedly
find new solutions for even more efficient and ecofriendly use of natural resources.
Catalytic Technologies 35
Higher yield per barrel
Dwindling oil reserves are forcing refineries, as
processing plants for crude oil, to become more
efficient. Süd-Chemie catalysts provide a guarantee
that the largest possible amount of high-quality
products are extracted from each barrel of crude
oil, offering a contribution to better and more
profitable use of this valuable resource. Innovative
catalysts also increase hydrogen production – a
critical commodity of key significance for the
production of low-sulphur gasoline and clean
diesel. The addition of Süd-Chemie’s zeolite catalysts improves the octane number of diesel, ensuring
improved engine performance. In future, the
strategic significance of this technology will greatly
increase, with both Süd-Chemie, its customers
and their markets benefiting from the anticipated
high investment volumes.
Well positioned for alternative fuels
Declining reserves coupled with high and volatile
oil prices call for new technology to produce motorvehicle fuel from other sources. With this in mind,
Süd-Chemie has for many years been investing
considerable resources in developing alternative
processes. The results speak for themselves. The
company already offers catalysts for gas-to-liquid
(GTL) production, as well as catalytic solutions for
converting coal (coal-to-liquid, CTL) and biomass
(biomass-to-liquid, BTL) into fuels and chemical
products. Süd-Chemie is a leading global player in
36
Catalytic Technologies
this sector, notably in the areas of raw material
purification, synthesis-gas generation, FischerTropsch synthesis and product refining. Based on
these processes, natural gas, coal and biomass can
be converted into diesel fuels, as well as base and
intermediate petrochemical products previously
generated from crude oil. As a result, a new era is
dawning, an era in which important products for
everyday use can be generated from alternative
resources promising much longer availability.
One example of Süd-Chemie’s commitment to GTL
is a newly-formed joint venture in the growth region
of Qatar, a country with the world’s third-largest
reserves of natural gas. Over the next few years,
total investment by major oil companies in this region will amount to over 20 billion dollars. The jointventure catalyst plant erected by Süd-Chemie in Qatar
is due to be commissioned at the beginning of 2008
and will produce customized catalysts for both GTL
and other chemical and petrochemical processes.
Single-source supplier
Its wide range of catalyst products and
extensive technical know-how make
Süd-Chemie a strategic partner for the
chemical, petrochemical, refinery and
olefin polymerization industries.
Olefin Polymerization –
plastics for the world
As a leading technology enterprise in specialty
chemicals, Süd-Chemie is playing an increasingly
important role in the advanced plastics industry,
supplying mainly catalysts for propylene polymerization, so-called Ziegler-Natta catalysts.
Polypropylene is one of the most versatile polymers for practically all plastics applications, being
available in both plastic and fiber form.
Polypropylene – a driving market force
Polypropylene offers outstanding physical, chemical,
mechanical, thermal and electrical properties that
exceed those of any other thermoplast. Compared
with polyethylene for instance, polypropylene and its
copolymer compounds offer excellent impact strength,
better working temperatures and enhanced tensile
strength. The most important downstream applications for polypropylene are in the fiber, film, packaging, equipment and automobile industries. This
functional plastic is ideal for manufacturing lightweight, yet at the same time robust injection-molded
parts, special fibers and thermoformed components.
Polypropylene’s unique chemical properties and its resistance to environmental influences make it extremely
attractive to both the textile and cable industries.
China holds a pre-eminent position in the polyolefin
business. Its strong economic growth is resulting in
ever-increasing demand in the production sector,
the volumes of polypropylene required for processing
having increased at an average annual rate of 13.5%
over the past decade. For this reason, Süd-Chemie
took over a majority interest in Shanghai Süd-Chemie
Jinhai Catalyst Co., located near Shanghai, in
October 2005, securing an excellent pole position
for supplying its Ziegler-Natta catalysts to both the
fast-growing Chinese market and the global market
for polypropylene.

Energy for a future worth living
Innovative technology for clean air and non-polluting energy is one of today’s
major challenges. It is the key to creating a platform for sustained economic
growth. Thanks to its innovative developments, the Energy and Environment
Business Unit is excellently positioned to exploit these markets of the future.
Rising energy prices and more stringent environmental
regulations are the result of constantly accelerating
global growth, which in turn leads to higher consumption of natural resources. This trend calls for new
technology and promises enormous growth potential
in the years to come. Süd-Chemie’s Energy and
Environment Business Unit develops products and
technology which help to reconcile ecology and
economy – a strategy that benefits all those involved.
Clean solutions for the environment
Clean combustion engines are a major ecological
challenge. The aim is to use high-performance
catalysts to prevent the emission of polluting gases,
such as carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen
oxides. The same applies to all other plants using
fossil fuels or regenerative energy, including biogas.
Emission control is also becoming increasingly
40
Energy and Environment
important in advanced power generation plants, as
in the case of combined heat and power generation.
Other emissions arising during industrial processes,
such as chemicals, solvents and nitrogen oxides,
must also be decontaminated.
Süd-Chemie offers reliable and efficient solutions to
all these challenges, being excellently positioned in
attractive growth markets, such as clean combustion
and emission catalysis for stationary industrial and
power-generation plants.
Clear strategy, decisive action
To strengthen its position even further, Süd-Chemie
systematically invests in new research and production plant, selectively expanding its know-how
based on strategic cooperation projects. This action
plan requires both market competence and courage.
Energy and
Environment
The reward for these efforts is a constant flow of
new products and services coupled with highlypromising global growth potential.
Pioneer on the road to sustainability
Aiming for sustainable economic activity, Süd-Chemie
uses its technology to open up additional areas of
application. The course is already set for ongoing
growth in future markets, including diesel emission
catalysis for the automobile industry, highly-efficient
energy storage using new materials for high-performance batteries, and the manufacture of hydrogen to
drive fuel cells and hydrogen engines.
In addition to technology geared to reducing
pollution and exhausts, Süd-Chemie’s product
portfolio already includes catalysts to generate
hydrogen for fuel cells, which represent the only
means of achieving the goal of zero emission at
some future date. And Süd-Chemie is laying the
essential foundation for this development.
automobile industry. In the fields of air purification,
hydrogen manufacture for fuel cells and energy
storage, the Energy and Environment Business Unit
offers tremendous growth potential which Süd-Chemie
aims to exploit, together with its customers and
partners.

Air Purification –
fresh-air technology
Industrial plant, generators and car engines – in view
of increasingly stringent regulations, the reduction of
harmful emission presents a challenge in almost every
field. Based on customized exhaust catalysts and allround consultancy competence, Süd-Chemie offers
high-quality products for the most diverse
applications.
Bespoke emission control
Off-gas emitted by the chemical industry, refineries
and petrochemical plants contains substances which
pollute the environment and damage health, including
volatile organic compounds, carbon monoxide and
nitrogen oxides. With the aid of state-of-the-art
catalysts, these can be immediately converted into
harmless substances as soon as they arise during
the industrial process. Finishing industries, such as
printing works and coating plants, also often require
systems for secondary emission treatment that are
equipped with Süd-Chemie catalysts.
The most frequently-used catalysts are high-quality
oxidation catalysts, whereby specialized reduction
catalysts also play an important role. Emissions
containing nitrogen oxides or laughing gas are
almost entirely decomposed into harmless nitrogen
and water by these products. Thanks to Süd-Chemie
catalysts, emissions from laughing gas, which is
42
Energy and Environment
three hundred times more harmful to the climate
than CO2 and arises mainly during the production
of nitric acid in fertilizer plants, can be effectively
prevented. Süd-Chemie also supplies specialty
chemicals to purify off-gas in the semiconductor
industry. With their assistance, aggressive compounds, containing for instance chlorine or fluorine,
no longer reach the atmosphere. However, customers
all over the world not only combat polluting gases
with the aid of Süd-Chemie, but also unpleasant
odors, ozone and smoke. Its high-performance
catalysts are for instance found in cooking equipment
used by professional catering kitchens, in fast-food
grills and in the food-processing industry.
The main markets for industrial off-gas catalysis are
currently North America, Europe and Japan. But
worldwide demand is rising. Increasingly stricter
laws and environmental requirements are turning
emission control catalysis into a future technology
of global significance.
Cleaner industry
Süd-Chemie catalysts prevent harmful
emissions, removing a growth obstacle for
many industries. This in turn creates more
economic demand.
Cleaner engines
However they are driven – with diesel, petrol,
natural gas, biogas or landfill gas – even the most
advanced engines call for secondary catalytic exhaust treatment. The catalysts required as are diverse
as the combustion engines themselves and the
prevailing emission standards. To meet these demands, Süd-Chemie offers technology for marine
engines, generators and gas turbines, as well as for
building machinery and motorcycles. Its portfolio is
divided into three-way and two-way catalysts, diesel
oxidation catalysts and catalysts for nitrogen oxide
reduction. Added to these are diesel particulate
filters, which are catalytically coated for enhanced
regeneration. As a supplier of dedicated high-grade
components for emission control, Süd-Chemie leads
the market with its specialty zeolites for catalysts
used by the automobile industry. It also offers
catalytic coatings and components for non-automotive engines, ships and motorcycles.
Bundled competence –
now also geared to the automobile industry
To further strengthen its market position,
Süd-Chemie had its offgas purification production sites audited to meet the high quality
standards of the automotive industry. This
and the company’s expertise in diesel emission
control are key prerequisites to become
established as a supplier for the automotive
industry – a highly attractive market.
Growth according to the rules
To halt air pollution and climatic change,
legislation in the US and Europe sets strict
emission control standards. Süd-Chemie’s
technology helps to keep within the limits.
Increasingly stringent regulations are
stimulating further demand.
Enormous potential
More stringent emission standards in Europe and
the US make the purification of diesel exhausts
both an important and lucrative future market. As
from 2009, all new diesel cars in Europe must be
fitted with a particulate filter.
Fuel-Cell Technology –
energy without emission
Reducing emission-based pollution has high priority,
both in the short and mid-term. The long-term goal
is however to develop low-pollution and, if possible,
emission-free drives. Süd-Chemie is making a significant contribution in this sector with its catalysts for
fuel-cell technology. The source of energy used by
non-polluting fuel cells is hydrogen. Based on an
electrochemical reaction involving oxygen, these
Energy and Environment 43
systems convert hydrogen into pure water, creating
large amounts of energy in the process. This can be
conveniently used in the form of heat or electricity
and represents an alternative with a tremendous
future. Today, fuel cells are used for mobile applications, such as vehicle drives, and for on-site power
units that generate electricity and heat for domestic
use, as well as for hotels and hospitals. Süd-Chemie
supplies catalysts to produce hydrogen in both areas,
promoting ongoing development of this technology.
Future-oriented experience
For more than sixty years, Süd-Chemie has shaped
the world market for so-called synthesis gas catalysts
which process fossil fuels, namely oil and natural
gas, to create pure hydrogen – the fuel for fuel cells
and the fuel of the future. Today, the company
already supplies catalysts to hydrogen filling stations,
which extract hydrogen from natural gas for refilling
into automobiles in gaseous form. The industry’s
current focus is on developing the first generation of
fuel cells to the production stage. Süd-Chemie holds
a prime position in this growth market, ranking
number one worldwide with its catalysts for hydrogen
production, and is therefore the preferred development partner for leading enterprises in this sector.
Worldwide network
An early response to new trends calls for a clear
lead in research, as well as developments in line
with market demands. Süd-Chemie is also paving
44
Energy and Environment
the way to the future in the sector of on-site
applications, working closely together with leading
global manufacturers of fuel-cell systems and
plants.
The company is for instance playing a major part in
the world’s largest pilot project for on-site fuel cells
in Japan. Subsidized by the Japanese government,
480 households have already been equipped with
on-site fuel cells to generate electricity and heating.
Most of the hydrogen catalysts required for this
project were supplied by Süd-Chemie.
Imminent mass production
Fuel-cell technology, and the hydrogen it
requires, is set to become a source of
future energy. Major players in this sector
will benefit directly from the huge growth
potential. Süd-Chemie is already well
equipped.
Energy Storage –
compact and full of power
Generating power is one thing, eco-friendly and
convenient storage is another. Süd-Chemie leads the
field in both disciplines. Its innovative cathode
material, lithium iron phosphate is clearing the way
for a new generation of lithium-ion batteries.
In many respects, this material is far superior to
conventional lithium cobalt oxide, which is highly
inflammable, expensive and harmful to the environment. The lithium iron phosphate developed by
Süd-Chemie has proved to be inexpensive, readily
available, powerful and harmless, both in technical
terms and healthwise.
Mobile growth
Based on this superior technology, Süd-Chemie is
excellently positioned on the market for lithium-ion
batteries. In 2005, worldwide sales reached well
over five billion euros and since lithium-ion batteries already serve as a source of energy for mobile
electronic devices, such as notebooks, camcorders
and tools, strong ongoing growth is assured.
Along with the space travel sector, automobile
manufacturers are already forecasting additional
demand due to the rising popularity of electric and
hybrid drives. For the first time, Süd-Chemie’s
novel cathode material makes it possible to produce
lithium-ion batteries that offer significant advantages
and meet far higher demands. Compared with
conventional batteries, they have a considerably
longer service life, higher output, no self-discharge
as a result of memory effect and are much lighter.
Initial success
The future has already begun. Lithium-ion batteries
based on Süd-Chemie’s new technology are already
driving electric bicycles in Asia. The next item on
the agenda are so-called power tools – highpowered mobile tools, as used for instance in the
building industry. Further applications in electric
wheelchairs and other electric-drive vehicles will
follow, along with hybrid-drive cars.
Energy to go
Lithium iron phosphate, Süd-Chemie’s new
cathode material, makes lithium batteries
even more powerful and safer. This is a step
forward for which battery producers and
mobile electronics manufacturers have been
waiting for years.

Shaping a future based on experience
What will tomorrow’s world look like? Will we be travelling silently from
A to B in emission-free vehicles and wearing multifunctional clothing
made from novel synthetics? One thing is certain – Süd-Chemie is contributing its experience based on more than a hundred and fifty years of corporate
history to actively shape this future.
Fresh water, clean air, safe products and alternative
energy are vital for our future. Promoting progress
in these sectors opens up new growth markets. And
Süd-Chemie is doing exactly this in every Business
Unit, based on experience, market know-how and
proximity to the customer. Unless new developments
are in line with demand, they have no chance in the
marketplace. For this reason, Süd-Chemie identifies
trends at an early stage and meets customer
challenges.
Opening up new sources of energy
One of the most important challenges of the twentyfirst century is the energy issue. Until today, oil has
been the industry’s lifeblood. However, this black
gold is running low. Alternatives are needed.
48
Perspectives
Süd-Chemie’s strategy is a changeover in small steps.
To extract fuels and base chemicals from alternative
raw materials, it has developed innovative catalysts
for gas-to-liquid (GTL) and coal-to-liquid (CTL)
processes. Today, state-of-the-art GTL plants are for
instance being realized on a large scale in Qatar –
the country with the world’s third-largest gas deposits.
CTL plants are already being successfully operated
in South Africa. Countries rich in coal deposits, such
as China and the US, will be following. In the long
term, oil, coal and natural gas will however have to
be replaced completely. Süd-Chemie is prepared
for this too and is working on catalysts for biomassto-liquid (BTL) processes to convert renewable raw
materials (biomass) into fuels. It also offers other
solutions for the future, for instance in the fields of
Perspectives
Innovation for more quality of life
„Creating Performance Technology“ is Süd-Chemie’s mission. All its products and
technologies, whether adsorbents or catalysts, refine high-quality industrial
products and allow for more efficient use of natural resources. This enhances the
quality of human life and preserves the environment. It also represents the key
common denominator linking all six Business Units in the Süd-Chemie Group.
Operations began over a hundred and fifty years ago
with the production of phosphate fertilizer in Heufeld,
near Munich, creating a cornerstone for the development of modern farming in Bavaria and Germany.
Süd-Chemie’s artificial fertilizer made a significant
contribution to combating the widespread famine
prevailing at that time, helping to lay the foundation
for the rise of today’s industrial society.
This first innovation was to be followed by many more
during the company’s long history. As a result of
mergers, restructurings and acquisitions, new activities were added, including the bleaching earth and
subsequently the catalyst business. The portfolio has
expanded significantly over the past one and half
centuries, but the company’s goal of creating inno-

The World of Süd-Chemie
vations for more quality of life has remained. Today,
Süd-Chemie, represented by its two divisions of Adsorbents and Catalysts, ranks among the leading
market players in the field of independent specialty
chemicals manufacturers.
Focus on markets of the future
Today, the nutritional problems of the nineteenth
century have given way to the challenges of emission
control, new sources of energy and sparing use of
natural resources. These markets of the future, in
which Süd-Chemie is excellently positioned with its
products and solutions, are both demanding and
attractive. Focus on the company’s own strengths,
target-oriented research, close proximity to its
markets and innovative products are the key to
biocatalysis and biorefinery. Fuel-cell technology
based on hydrogen and methanol also promises
tremendous innovation potential and positive growth
prospects, whereby high-performance catalysts are
needed to produce both these base materials. As a
long-standing market leader in this technology,
Süd-Chemie will make it possible to realize the
changeover to new sources of energy based on a
strategy that is both in line with market demands
and profitable, and that paves the way to the future.
Progress for industry and environment
For Süd-Chemie, industry and the environment belong
together, since new eco-friendly developments also
provide impetus for ongoing growth. To really boost
this impetus, the company relies on its own research
and on strategic partnerships. Its success speaks for
itself. Süd-Chemie is one of the major driving forces
behind technology for fresh water and clean air. Its
products for treating drinking water and effluents are
in high demand, notably in Asia, South America and
Southern Africa. The same applies to its products for
air pollution control in Europe, North America and
Asia. More stringent emission standards call for new
solutions, for instance to purify diesel exhausts in the
automobile industry. Süd-Chemie already holds the
key with its technology and specialty catalysts.
Innovative energy-storage systems represent another
important step and could achieve a break-through
for hybrid engines, thanks to Süd-Chemie’s new
generation of lithium-ion batteries equipped with an
eco-friendly cathode material, lithium iron phosphate.
This replaces the environmentally harmful lithium
cobalt oxide previously used, improves safety and is
much more powerful – an element of progress offering
great growth opportunities. The list of other growth
drivers is long and includes the huge demand for
bleaching earth in Asia, as well as specialty chemicals for the fast-growing, global tunnel-construction
sector, packaging technology for transporting
goods and new high-performance solutions for the
booming foundry industry, to name only a few.
More than 150 years of future
From the day it was formed, Süd-Chemie has
worked on technologies offering future potential
and ongoing process enhancement. Since then,
many of Süd-Chemie’s innovations have changed
the world, resulting in added comfort, safety and
sustainable economic growth – a success story that
is still being written each day by qualified researchers
and highly-motivated staff.
Geared to growth
Today, Süd-Chemie is active in key growth
markets, poised on the leading edge of
progress – for the good of industry, the
environment and our quality of life.

A future based on experience
Süd-Chemie is a modern specialty-chemicals enterprise that can look back on
more than a hundred and fifty years of tradition and experience. A lot has
changed since it was formed in 1857. Yet the values applied to shape the future
from the very first day have remained the same – progress, innovation, partnership and mutual growth. We are proud of this tradition and we keep it alive
every single day.
Our success proves that we are on the right track. As a supplier of specialty
chemicals, Süd-Chemie ranks among the world’s market leaders in each of its
six areas of activity, concentrating on attractive growth markets and holding
key positions with its products and solutions.
This gives rise to excellent prospects and promising growth opportunities. On
the following pages, you can find out about the services, technologies and
solutions that offer tangible benefits not only for our customers, partners and
shareholders but also for our society as a whole. This brochure provides an
overview of Süd-Chemie’s portfolio, introducing its most important brands,
products and services.
I hope you will enjoy both reading about us and using Süd-Chemie’s range of
products and services.
With warmest regards
