As a "Gateway to the Black
Forest", Karlsruhe is considered
to be one of the sunniest towns
in Germany and is surrounded
with beautiful scenery. It owes
its unique townscape as a
"fan-shaped city" to its founder,
Margrave Karl Wilhelm, who
had his palace built at its centre
in 1715, from where the roads
emanate like rays.
Culture and art traditionally
have a high profile as the
Badisches Landesmueum (Baden
State Museum), the State Art
Gallery as well as many other
institutions prove. Karlsruhe is
of particular importance in the
cultural scene with the ZKM
(Center for Art and Media
Technology), the world‘s first
media museum.
centres, hip trend shops and
innovative specialist shops all
attract shoppers to Karlsruhe.
Moreover, Karlsruhe is a "city
on the countryside" with over
1,000 hectares of public parks,
lakes and forests for active and
varied leisure activities.
The proximity to France can
be felt everywhere in the city,
whether in the local cuisine, the
excellent wines or the joie de
vivre, which the locals exude.
Culture, nature, pleasure and
the Baden lifestyle – there
are many reasons to come to
Karlsruhe.
We look forward to your visit!

Municipal Protestant Church
The Municipal Protestant Church
was built according to plans drawn
up by the famous Karlsruhe architect
Friedrich Weinbrenner, as the cathedral church of Baden, on the orders
of Grand Duke Karl Friedrich. The
foundation stone was laid in 1807
and the inauguration took place in
1816. The vestibule gable is suppor-

It is worth taking a look at the crypt. There are almost always interesting exhibitions there. And Weinbrenner‘s sarcophagus is located in an alcove directly underneath the entrance to the church
Karlsruhe Palace
The Karlsruhe Palace was built
between 1715 and 1718. For almost 200 years it was the residence
and seat of the government of the
Margrave, and then the Grand
ted by six high Corinthian columns. A
gold-plated angel adorns the steeple.
Under the central nave of the church
is the former crypt of the Grand
Duke‘s family.
Dukes of Baden. Today the Palace
houses the Baden State Museum.
From the palace tower there is a
fascinating view of the layout of
Karlsruhe – "the fan-shaped city".
Market Square with pyramid
The Market Square with its pyramid,
developed by the famous Karlsruhe
municipal architect Friedrich Weinbrenner is probably the most wellknown place in Karlsruhe and more
or less forms the city centre.
Here, there is also the city landmark,
the pyramid which was built in 1823.
Underneath is the crypt of the "Konkordienkirche", which was demolished in 1807. It is here that the city‘s
founder and namesake, Margrave
Charles William of Baden-Durlach is
buried.
In addition, the municipal Protestant
church and the town hall are also
located here.
Town Hall
The Town Hall was completed in
1825 using plans drawn up by the
city architect Friedrich Weinbrenner.
A statue of Mercury, the symbol for
trade and commerce, graces the top
of the town hall tower. The centre
of the building features a pillared

Parish Church of St. Stephan
The Parish Church of St. Stephan is
the oldest Catholic church in Karlsruhe. The church, modelled on
the Pantheon in Rome, was built
and inaugurated between 1808 1814 by Friedrich Weinbrenner as
a cross-shaped central structure
with a dome. The patron saint is
St. Stephen in recognition of the
services of Princess Stephanie, an
adoptive daughter of Napoleon.
She had moved to Baden after her
marriage and joined the Catholic
community.

loggia. There is also a Glockenspiel
here, dating from 1981. Inside the
town hall a miniature version of the
first automobile by inventor Carl Benz
as well as a model from the inventor of
the dandy horse, Baron Karl von Drais
can be seen.
The Grand Duke‘s Burial Chapel is
atmospherically situated in the middle of the Hardtwald forest. It is the
only royal building of that period in
Baden to survive the Second World
War undamaged. The crypt in the
basement of the chapel is well worth
seeing with its original stained-glass
windows adorned with plant motifs.

Federal Constitutional Court
and Federal Supreme Court
Karlsruhe symbolises the "Seat of
Justice" and represents the modern,
democratic, constitutional state of
Germany. The highest German legal
institutions are headquartered here:
the Federal Constitutional Court, the
Federal Supreme Court and the Federal Public Prosecutor‘s office. The
Federal Constitutional Court has had
its seat in Karlsruhe from the outset. It is situated between the palace
square and the Botanical gardens.
The open design of the official building is supposed to give the impression of democratic transparency.
www.bundesverfassungsgericht.de
Platz der Grundrechte
"Platz der Grundrechte" (The square
of fundamental rights) was laid down
as a gift from the city of Karlsruhe to
the Federal Constitutional Court in
2005. Here there are 24 double-sided
signs, which deal with the topics of
law and injustice – with statements
from judges, lawyers and citizens
who have come into conflict with
the law.
Ständehaus memorial
The Karlsruhe Ständehaus was the
first separate new Parliament building in Germany and represents
125 years of parliamentary history
in Baden. It is rightfully considered
to be a pioneer of democracy in
Germany. The "Ständehaus memorial"
has been a reminder of this tradition
since 1993. Here the federal state
parliamentary history of Baden is presented in an exhibition.
Prinz-Max-Palais
The Prinz-Max-Palais has a turbulent
past. Originally the grandiose retirement residence of a large-scale entrepreneur, it then became the palace of
the high nobility of Baden, residence
of the last imperial chancellor, former
seat of the Federal Constitutional
10
Court and university building. Today
the building houses the City Museum,
the Museum of Upper Rhine literature, the Literary Society as well as
the children‘s library.

As well as the classical cultural facilities, for a few years now young creatives
have been mixing things up a bit at the Creative centre "Alter Schlachthof".
Only the unusual names like "Alte Hackerei" (Meat chopping) or "Fettschmelze"
(Fat rendering) hark back to the earlier use of the premises, which was finally
shut down in 2006. In the impressive red brick buildings today you will find
artists‘ collectives, studio communities, classical craftsmen, architecture offices,
agencies for new media as well as the Karlsruhe film board.
In the east of Karlsruhe a lively urban district with gastronomy and cultural
establishments has sprung up through the co-operation of the many media
workers and creative artists. Thus, the cultural centre TOLLHAUS offers a contemporary programme of comedy, dance, world music, jazz, festivals and open
air events, whilst "Substage" is considered to be one to the most established
live music clubs for all kinds of rock music in Baden-Württemberg.

Places of interest
Karlsburg Castle
With nearly 30,000 inhabitants, Durlach is
the largest district in Karlsruhe and is often
described as the "mother" of Karlsruhe.
Medieval flair has left its stamp on the old
part of Durlach with its picturesque market
place, town walls, the palace square and the
narrow lanes and old walls. Small cafés and
restaurants await you.
Karlsburg Castle is situated in the
centre of Durlach. Only a small section
of the first residential palace from
Margrave Karl Wilhelm II remains.
Today, the Pfinzgaumuseum, housed
in the rooms of the baroque Karlsburg, shows the history of the town
of Durlach from its establishment up
until today, and the Carpathian-German
Museum is dedicated to the culture
of the Carpathian-Germans from Slovakia. Objects relating to the history
of art, culture, society and everyday
life are displayed.
Turmberg and Turmberg funicular railway
The 256 metre high Turmberg is the
local hill and the landmark of Durlach.
There is a comfortable alternative running parallel to get to the top of the
529 steps (affectionately named "witches‘ steps"): the Turmberg funicular
railway. It has been operating on the
Turmberg since 1888 and is one of
Germany‘s oldest funicular railways.

terms and conditions
for the Karlsruhe Card
Dear guests of the City of Karlsruhe,
With the Karlsruhe Card, Karlsruhe Tourismus
GmbH and participating service partners offer you
special services and benefits to help make your stay
in Karlsruhe an unforgettable experience. In offering
this facility, it is important that certain reciprocal
rights and obligations are clearly understood, and
these are laid down in the following Terms and
Conditions of Use. Please read these terms and
conditions carefully before using the card and taking
advantage of the benefits it provides.
1. Basic provisions, participants and subject
of these Terms and Conditions of Use
1.1. The Karlsruhe Card is hereinafter referred to as
the "Card", the buyer of the Card is referred to
as the "Cardholder". The issuer of the Card
and the party to the card use contract with the
Cardholder is Karlsruhe Tourismus GmbH,
hereinafter referred to as "KTG".
1.2."Service partners" within the meaning of
these conditions are institutions, companies,
independent operators, traders and facilities
which provide the respective services and benefits
to the Cardholders and are specified as a service
provider in the currently applicable service list
for the Card.
1.3. The sales outlets have no performance obligation
with respect to the Cardholder regarding
performance, either as a key contractual
obligation or as an ancillary contractual obliga
tion. The same applies for KTG as the issuer of
the Card, except with regard to services or
benefits which KTG itself undertakes to provide.
1.4. The sales outlets, the service partners and KTG
do not have the status of a package tour
operator or travel agent. With regard to the
status of package tour operator, this only applies
to the extent that the above-mentioned
participants do not appear, in the meaning of
the principles of Article 651a par. 2 of the
German Civil Code (Bürgerliches Gesetzbuch
– BGB), to provide an integrated package of
contractually envisaged services as their own
service.
2. Legal basis, information und warranties of
third parties
2.1. The entire legal and contractual relation
ships between KTG and the Cardholder within
the framework of the card use contract and
between the Cardholder and the service partner
within the framework of the contractual and
use relationship regarding the respective services
are subject exclusively to German law, except
where mandatory provisions of EU law provide
otherwise in favour of the Cardholder for
contracts with cardholders from EU Member
States.
2.2.
The contractual and service relationship
between the Cardholder and the service partners
is subject to the relevant provisions of these
Terms and Conditions of Use and, if they have
been effectively agreed or are generally effective
under the provisions of law, their terms and
conditions of business and/or terms and
conditions of service or carriage, as well as the
provisions of law applicable to the service
relationship.
2.3.Through the issuance and use of the Card, no
contractual obligations arise between the Card
holder and KTG or the sales outlets with regard
to the services themselves. The respective
service partner alone is obliged with respect to
the Cardholder to render the service or grant
the benefit with regard to the respective service,
price reduction or other benefit and not KTG,
the host or the sales outlet, except where their
own offers are concerned.
42
3. Payment for the Card and relationship of
the card services to other services of the
service partners
3.1.The currently advertised prices apply for the
purchase of the Card. Up to the conclusion of
the card use contract, price increases relative to
the advertised prices are possible.
3.2.If the Card provides benefits a precondition
for which is the conclusion of a contract giving
rise to a payment obligation with the respective
service partner, the discount will be granted on
the current prices of the service partner
applicable at the time of the conclusion of the
contract. If discounts are not granted as a
percentage of the service partner’s price, in the
event of a price increase of the service partner
the discount will not be adjusted in line with
the increased prices of the service partner.
4. Service obligations; type and scope of
service, restrictions on the services and
exclusion from use
4.1.By issuing the Card, KTG enables the Card
holder to take advantage of the services or
benefits specified in the currently applicable
service list for the Card.
4.2.When a free-of-charge service and/or the
discount is claimed in accordance with the service
description for the Card, a contractual relation
ship is established with the respective service
partner on claiming the service or discount.
4.3.The type and scope of the services and/or
benefits for the Cardholder are specified ex
clusively in the service list applicable at the time
when the Card is issued, which will be provided
to the Cardholder together with the Card or
generally advertised/announced.
4.4.The service partners shall only be obliged to
render their services in accordance with the
general terms and conditions of their business
activities, particularly taking into account ad vertised service periods, opening hours and
general conditions (e.g. weather conditions).
4.5.The service partners can restrict the advertised
services or benefits entirely or partially,
particularly their timeframe, provided that there
are practical reasons for doing so. These
include, in particular, obstacles to performance
due to weather conditions, requirements or
orders of governmental authorities, maintenance
work or repairs, measures for reasons related
to road safety, undue congestion or overcrowding
of facilities or other, similarly practical reasons.
5. Validity of the Card
5.1. The Card services/benefits can only be claimed
in the advertised effective year and for the
respective period of validity. Interruptions of the
period of use and later resumption of use are
not permitted. Only continuous use for the
days covered by the Card’s validity is permitted.
Distribution of the days of use over various
stays or non-contiguous calendar days is not
allowed. The above provisions also apply if the
Cardholder for reasons related to his/her person
or within his/her sphere of influence, is unable
to make full or further use of the Card after
commencement of validity. There is no entitle
ment to the transfer of the Card and/or its
performances to future stays or other persons.
benefits for the Cardholder or his/her entitled
relatives, the service partner can demand
appropriate proof of age.
6.3.If the Card is lost or stolen or becomes
defective, the Cardholder must immediately
report the incident to the accommodation
facility or the issuing body. There is no entitle
ment to free-of-charge issuance of a new Card.
7. Right to make changes to the card services
and the terms and conditions of use
7.1.KTG and the service partners reserve the right
to change the services as defined in the
currently applicable service list for practical
reasons, by way of a unilateral declaration
or public announcement. The same applies
to changes to these terms and conditions
of use by KTG.
7.2.Any changes after the issue of the Card are
excluded for the period of validity applicable to
the respective Cardholder.
Touren
8. Cancellation, failure to take advantage of
card performances and rescission
8.1.The Cardholder is advised that under the
provisions of law (Article 312g par. 2 sentence 1
No. 9 BGB) there is no cancellation right with
regard to contracts on guest cards and taking
advantage of the relevant services and benefits
as contracts on services in connection with
recreational activities which are concluded
through distance selling (letters, catalogues,
telephone calls, faxes, e-mails, messages sent
through mobile services (text messages) or
radio or telemedia). However, a cancellation
right does exist if the contract was not concluded
through distance selling but outside business
premises, unless the oral negotiations on which
the conclusion of the contract is based were
conducted upon a previous order being placed
by the consumer. In the latter case, a cancellation
right also does not exist.
8.2.If the Cardholder, for reasons for which KTG,
the service partners, the hosts or sales outlets
are not responsible, fails in whole or in part to
take advantage of card performances, he/she
will not be entitled to a refund of the purchase
price. However, KTG will repay saved expenses
of the service partners, as soon as and
provided that they are actually reimbursed
by the service partners and provided that
remuneration is not payable to the service
partners under the terms of the arrangements
made with them in the event that the
performances or benefits are not claimed.

6. The use of the Card; obligations and
liability of the Cardholder
6.1.In order to take advantage of the services, the
Cardholder must produce the original card and
present it to the service partner before taking
advantage of the service, for electronic
verification or visual inspection.
6.2.The Cardholder must if requested produce a
valid official identity document bearing a photo
