GENUINE GREENFEED® SLOW RELEASE FERTILIZER CRITERIA AN INSIGHT INTO NUTRIENTS CONTENTS Quality Control Department Tam Yeen Mum As the world requirements for foods, feeds, fiber and energy had been increasing, the fertilizer industry plays a vital part in ensuring sufficient and correct nutrients to be supplied to the farmers in order to grow crops to meet the need. Nutrients available to plants are always a tricky part in the soil management. Although all nutrients required by plants (eg: Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium, Magnesium, Calcium and etc) are available naturally, but the quantities are not sufficient to meet the needs of the growing and urbanized population. At this junction point of time, fertilizers come into picture and supply additional nutrients in a form that can be readily absorbed by plants. According to the International Fertilizer Industry Association (IFA), the fertilizer industry encourages the adoption of Fertilizer Best Management Practices (FBMPs) as part of the good agricultural practices in improving desirable soil characteristics. Those practices should be technically sound, economically attractive, environmentally safe, feasible in practice, and socially acceptable to ensure sustainability as well as assisting with productivity. One of the most important components of good agricultural practices is in selecting the appropriate fertilizers with balanced nutrient rates, methods, and application frequencies. Since the review on the physical and durability test of genuine Greenfeed® Slow Release Fertilizer have been carried out previously, now it is the time to take an insight into the balanced chemical aspects of a genuine Greenfeed® Slow Release Fertilizer. It has been well known that Greenfeed® Slow Release Fertilizers are manufactured as palletized nugget with a standard uniform spherical size and shape. Besides having just 1.0% variances of overall weight for each pelletized nugget, the claimed nutrients status in each single nugget is also within 1.0% variance for every batch produced. This is achievable through the Greenfeed® patented pelletized technology achievements within the manufacturing facility in Shah Alam, Selangor. There are multiple advantages provided by pelletized fertilizers. This also overcomes the possible occurrence of rapid reduction to the available forms of nutrients after a single application of highly soluble nutrients such as Phosphorus (P) Firstly, pellets provide uniformity in size that will help in soils as a result of fixation processes. Controlled Release non-professional and professional alike when spreading Fertilizers of nutrients into a fixing medium may increase their fertilizers. The nutrients in each pellet will then be evenly availability. Shaviv (2001) reported a much higher Phosphorus circulated through the fertilized area as the pellets are of the (P) accumulation in plants fertilized with Controlled Release same size. Therefore, nutrients are delivered in pellets as it Fertilizer containing N-P-K as compared with applications of dissolves in the soil and able to eliminate the potential for conventional granular Phosphorus (P). segregation of nutrient sources during transport or application. Also, nutrients can be uniformly distributed throughout the root zone and provide sufficient mix of nutrients for the growth of plants. In contrast to that, application of conventional soluble fertilizers will results in excessive nutrient supply and may results in a high concentration of soluble salts in the root zone. This may induce osmotic stress and cause specific injuries to plants at different growth stages. The use of slow release fertilizer improves germination and crop quality together with reduced leaf burns; stalk breakages, and disease infestation (A.Shaviv, 2005). In addition to that, Greenfeed® Slow Release Fertilizers have the entire N-P-K recipe built in to each pellet to ensure proper nutrient management in each shred of fertilizer. This is in stark contrast from a bag of fertilizer that might have pellets of Nitrogen (N), pellets of Phosphorus (P), and pellets of 5 GREENFEED BULLETIN ISSUE 6, 2012 Plate 3: Replicate of samples for analysis Table 2 shows the recommended application rate for each Greenfeed® Slow Release Fertilizers for optimum nutrients supply in crops growth. Often, slow release fertilizers will have larger grains whereas faster-acting fertilizers will be smaller to maximize surface area for quick dissolving. Nonetheless, Greenfeed® Slow Release Fertilizer tailored its products to a uniform 16.5 gram size in order to cater to its specific method and time of application (Table 2) to achieve a balance nutrients supply. In addition, the ratio of nutrients in each Greenfeed® nugget is ensured to be uniform throughout. (Sources: Greenfeed® blog, greenfeedmalaysia.blogspot.com) There are materials other than macro- and micronutrients exist in each pellet. These materials are known as fillers. One of the well-known filler of Greenfeed® products is the zeolite. It serves to slow the release rate of the nutrients so that the fertilizer works better over time rather than flushing through all at once. The purity of Greenfeed® Slow Release Fertilizer products range increases in the following order which can be referred to Figure 1 below. Here, Greenfeed Group acts as the cook that presents the finest dish at its top quality. In order to ensure that the 1% variance rule is being followed at all time, Greenfeed had invested vastly in equipping Greenlab Agricultural Research Center which is under Greenfeed Group with various high end analytical and scientific instruments allowing all QC tests can be carried out accurately and extensively. Besides the high end instruments used, stringent QC process also involved the use of standard and in-house methods that are suitable for Greenfeed® Slow Release Fertilizer testing. We make sure that the methods used are one that is validated and reliable. Table 3 shows the various analytical tests used in validating nutrients content in fertilizers. Furthermore, with comprehensive understanding from various experiences within both fertilizing and oil palm industry, Greenfeed Group are able to produce tailored made product according to buyers’ request. It is the knowledge and experiences that allow the formulation to be carried out in a very precise manner within 1% variance of nutrients level in each nugget. 7 GREENFEED BULLETIN ISSUE 6, 2012 Following the sample digestion, contents of P, K, Mg, Ca and other micronutrients are verified by using UV-Vis Spectrometer (PE Lambda 25) and Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (PE AA400) respectively. Any nonconformance found in the analysis will be filed for a follow up action in accordance to the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). All QC passed products will then be released for delivery. Greenfeed® Slow Release Fertilizers has been in the fertilizer industry for many years, yet it is still a novel innovation to the Plate 5: Physical test for each batch of product produced All products will undergo a series of physical and chemical tests before they are certified as conforming to their quality and specifications respectively. Physical tests being carried out include the durability test that was mentioned within the previous issue, which shall not be elaborated longer here. The essential chemical tests that discussed within this paper are the nutrients verification tests (Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium, Magnesium and other micronutrients) (Table 3). industry. Today, Greenfeed Group faces competitions and a growing demand to provide performance benchmarking. The venue as mentioned earlier is located at Jakarta Convention Center (JCC) in the busy street of Jakarta. We left our accommodation for breakfast and then proceed straight to the venue. As planned, we reached Jakarta Convention Center (JCC) around 7:45 am upon registration before proceeding to our booth. This is the beginning of our journey. ii. Setting up Greenfeed booth Upon arriving, we arrange necessary parts accordingly for easy assembling later on. The first task carried out was the setting up of the backdrops. This task was scheduled completion within 45 minutes and the following task will be slightly more committing. The team was divided into two, as one team will be attending to the logistics and another team stays back to arrange the booth accordingly. For logistics, the team has to go into the busy streets of Jakarta and manage the matter immediately. Once returned, we then continued with the assembling of the island of the booth. This island will iii. Assembling the centre island be located in the centre of the booth and must be stable as well as firm enough to withstand any mild external force. GREENFEED BULLETIN ISSUE 6, 2012 14 Once the booth physical structure was completed, we then arrange the tripod stand that is holding three projectors continuously for 3 (three) days of the exhibition. As simple as it may sound, this task is quite challenging as it is important for the tripod to be well balanced upon bearing the weight of the three projectors and also the screen projected must be as well composed as possible. Apart from that, the projected screens must be within comfortable viewing height for visitors and also having the lowest glare effect. Once the setting up of the booth was completed, we carried out pre-run Responding to every inquiries effectively simulations in order to troubleshoot any errors on site. We stayed at the venue until 8:00 pm local time and once satisfied, we covered our booth and went back for dinner before returning to our accommodation.
