Editorial
Energy is life
Baden is an energy city
“In April 1891, Bruno Saft sold one
and a half hectares of flat farmland
from the Hasel field to Walter Boveri.”
These are the first lines in the new
book entitled “Stadtgeschichte”
(History of Baden). Saft owned the
flagship hotel in the spa town of
Baden, the “Grand Hotel”, situated at the bend of the Limmat
River. His purchase of this land was a turning point in the city’s
history. The Grand Hotel was also one of the first hotels in
Switzerland to have electric lighting.
The city of Baden has a long
tradition as an energy city: exactly
125 years ago, Charles Brown and
Walter Boveri founded ABB,
formerly known as BBC. Their first
contract was to build generators
for the municipal electricity plant
founded the same year, which is today the “Regionalwerke”
(regional power plant). Both companies have shaped Baden
as an industrial location and laid the foundation for its
economic prosperity. On behalf of the city council, I would
like to congratulate both companies on their anniversary and
thank them for our excellent cooperation.
Today, access to energy is something we take for granted. We
switch on the light, electricity comes out of the socket, and there
is an endless flow of water. The spotlights in the theatre let the
performers shine. We feel a tingling sensation during the first bass
tones at a rock concert, colourful strings of lights around the
garden pubs announce the arrival of balmy summer evenings, and
we are enchanted by the Christmas lights in Switzerland.
Energy is life. And Baden is full of it. We feel healthy and happy
when we are charged with energy. A stroll along the Limmat,
floating down the river on warm summer days, luxuriating in the
lull of the bubbling 47 degree warm thermal water or even
drinking a cup of the waters. Getting a dose of fresh air in the
nearby forest, enjoying the miles of open countryside way up high
on the Stein Castle ruins or from one of the lookout points. Find
your own personal energy spot, maybe in the Tüfels Chäller nature
reserve, on a bench in the park, drinking coffee in the city centre
or in a short chat with Saint Verena. Who knows what sort of
miracles she has in store for us today.
My personal energy tip: let the people of Baden invigorate you
with their vitality.
Since 2006, the label “Energy City” has also had another,
future-oriented meaning: it acknowledges cities with a
consistent energy policy, making Baden one of the leading
municipalities in Switzerland. We are currently working on
adding an energy management plan and an energy strategy
to our energy guidelines. We are proud to announce that
we have even been awarded the Gold Label for this process.
One of our top priorities is to also be able to uphold this
philosophy in the future and take other steps to ensure
conscientious and eco-friendly energy generation and use.
Baden isn’t just a city with economic energy; its people are
also full of energy. It is the inhabitants of Baden who have
made the city an important industrial location and an
award-winning energy city. Something that I feel time and
again is the energy that drives the city’s ongoing progress
and development at all levels. Be it in negotiations about the
Schulhausplatz, meetings about classroom planning or
simply personal contact with the local community. This
energy makes the city a true energy city.
Best regards

Geri Müller, Mayor of Baden

we have come up with an unusual idea for 2016. The
special motto of the 10th Baden Magisch will be: “Quality
made in Switzerland”. The sole performers at the anniversary show will be the Swiss magicians Michel Gammenthaler, Alex Porter and Christoph Borer, three of the best

In June 2016, Figura will once again feature contemporary
and innovative performances from Switzerland and abroad
in all of Baden and Wettingen’s theatres, as well as outside on the streets and in the squares. During the Figura

PEOPLECITYSTORIES
The outstanding City Portrait
Baden interacts with the world –
the new City History
This 20-minute City Portrait surprises commuters and
guests as well as Baden’s population with striking
perspectives and valuable tips. Experience interesting
facets of the city in the form of ten authentic, moving short
stories that allow viewers to share emotional moments at
different locations all throughout the city. All of the stories
culminate in a stirring finale with a format that is only
possible in Baden. The extraordinary short film by director
Michael Spindler has impressed the industry media as well
and was awarded various distinguished national and
international film prizes.
Fifty years after the last comprehensive portrait, a new
overview of the history of the city of Baden is available since
May 2015. In a compact and comprehensive manner, the
locally-based author team describes the latest research
results, which include the latest archaeological findings
about Baden’s history and enable you to take a new look at
the urban and social development of the modern city.
The film is available in different languages at www.
badenfilm.ch, along with lots of additional information
about the people, city and stories that are shown or
referred to in the film.
You can also find out how the project is being continued.
The film is to be further developed and kept up to date, just
like the dynamic city of Baden will continue to grow in the
following years. The film is also available as a DVD from
Info Baden, Tourist Office.
Find more information about the City Portrait at:
www.badenfilm.ch
The new City History stands out due to an innovative
methodical and visual manner of access. Portraits of 15
Baden natives give glimpses into the way lives were lived
during the past 2,000 years using words and pictures.
Large-scale city topographies document the city’s urban
development. The local specifics are sought out in every
area of life, and so a special focus is given to exchanges
with foreigners – from visitors to the baths in the Roman
times and engineers and seasonal workers during the city’s
industrialisation to today’s employees of international
companies and tourists from all over the world.
The new City History, illustrated with 250 colour and
black-and-white photos, is published by Baden publisher
Hier und Jetzt, which specialises in overviews of national
history and books about regional history. The author team
consists of architectural historian Fabian Furter, historian
and publisher Bruno Meier, archaeologist Andrea Schaer
and Germanist and historian Ruth Wiederkehr. All four
authors live in the Baden region.
The book is available from Info Baden, Bahnhofplatz 1,
CH-5400 Baden.

Alter Stadtfriedhof (Old City Cemetery)
Bruggerstrasse 53
Opened in 1821, full capacity was reached in 1949. Today,
new burials are allowed in family crypts only. Special
features of the city cemetery, which now serves as a park,
include the conically-shaped cypress trees flanking the
centre aisle, picturesque old groves and individual trees,
and family crypts of affluent residents of the city.
Kurpark
Haselstrasse 2
With the construction of the Kursaal in 1875, a park was
also created in the style of late landscape gardens. Many
elements from the richly adorned park have been lost
during later expansions and reconstructions, but the
impressive stand of trees from exotic woods of those times
and the water installations have been preserved.
Mättelipark
Spa district
Lying directly on the river Limmat, this area was a social
gathering point as far back as the Middle Ages. It was the
hotel garden of the Grand Hotel until 1944 when the hotel
was demolished. It was redeveloped as a park in 1969.
Villa Boveri Park
Ländliweg 5
The most significant private park in the city of Baden, it
was built in 1897 by Walter Boveri I. The park consists of
two independent gardens: the landscape garden and the
Neo-Baroque terraced garden.
The landscape garden is distinguished by the beautifully
preserved stand of trees that frame it and date back to its
creation. The estate is now managed by the ABB
charitable foundation.

Thermalbank (Thermal bench)
The Thermalbank, an eight-metre-long foot bath filled with
thermal water, allows everyone to experience the richest
mineral water in Switzerland for free. The Heisser Stein
thermal spring, one of 18 thermal springs in the Baden
area, supplies warm water to the foot bath via an old
underground wooden pipeline that flows freely with no
need of a pump. Thanks to the natural soothing warmth of
the water, the Thermalbank offers bathing fun day and
night, all year long.
The foot bath is located in the spa district on the Limmat
promenade near the Inhalatorium, with a view of the River
Limmat. A comfortable, signposted 10-minute walk leads
from the railway station to the Thermalbank.
There, visitors can read interesting details on information
boards about the qualities and special characteristics of
Baden’s thermal water. The Thermalbank was made
possible thanks to the financial support of the Raiffeisenbank Lägern-Baregg.

Chänzeli Lookout Point Tour
A panoramic city hike
Extensive walking routes, known as “terrain cures”, were
part of the established therapy in Baden’s bathing culture
as far back as the Belle Époque (at the turn of the 19th
century). The goal of this “therapeutic hiking” was to
strengthen the heart, circulatory system and muscles. The
“Chänzelis”, or lookout points, on the hills of the Klus
gorge were popular excursion destinations back then, and
rewarded the exertions of guests seeking a cure with
diverse nature, fresh air and gorgeous views.
Today, the Chänzeli Tour is an unforgettable panoramic
city hike around Baden. With over 1,300 steps along the
way, the highs and lows in the city of Baden’s Klus gorge
can be handled with ease. Chänzeli Tour participants will
20
Info Guide 2016
experience fantastic views of the city of Baden and
impressive encounters with nature – contrasts at every
step of the way. The panoramic city hike is marked with
white signposts all along the route.
During the Chänzeli Tour you can truly sense
Baden’s diversity.
On the one side of the Klus gorge, the Wettinger
Schartenfels towers above you, while across from it the
Stein Castle ruins loom majestically on Baden’s
Schlossberg mountain, and the river Limmat flows
between them both.
Anyone who has stood on one of the four lookout points
soon realises that the spectacular panorama of the city
and region owes its existence to the river Limmat. Over
millennia the river has created the imposing height
differences.
On the Chänzeli Tour you will receive impressions of the
different neighbourhoods in the city of Baden: the spa
district, for example, which displays a great cultural-historical significance, or the Old Town where you feel like you
have been transported back to the Middle Ages as you
follow the winding, narrow streets from the city tower and
explore their many cafés and small shops.
There is also Baden Nord, an area of pulsating interaction
where culture, residential areas and modern office
buildings by famous architects lie side-by-side with
restored relics from the past industrial age.
All of this and more can be discovered on the Chänzeli
Tour – the panoramic city hike.

Point Tour at:

home-grown creations, contemporary authors and classical plays are also performed, with guest troupes invited
from time to time.

The Nateschwara Theater was started in 1997 as a platform for the Nateschwara Dance Company of Vijaya Rao.
In the meantime, it has developed into a popular forum for
Indian and musical arts. In a spring and an autumn season
respectively, it presents international and local exponents
of the classical Indian dance and music scene. Meanwhile,
the Nateschwara Theater has also made a name for itself
in India and showcased famous Indian musicians such as
Sanjay Subrahmanyan, Guitar-Prasanna, S. Sowmya and
P. Unnikrishnan.
The Nateschwara Theater always strives to provide the
local audience with impressive Indian stage theatre performances that are as authentic as possible. The possibilities
are almost endless – whether it’s with a meal or a traditional Indian welcome, here you can experience the Indian
culture up close.
Centrally located, the Nateschwara Theater offers seating
for around 90 people. Many performances include an
authentic Indian dinner beforehand (specialities prepared in
the theatre’s own kitchen).

Remise Theater 5406
The theatre in Rütihof started its first season with a magnificent in-house production in 2001. Significantly, the play
was called “Uf em eigne Mischt gwachse” (“home-grown
in your backyard”). The former barn was converted into
a magical theatre with a unique atmosphere by proactive
villagers. The smell of manure has given way to a red velvet
curtain. Performances by professional artists on the stage
are financed by in-house productions. The summer theatre
has become a great success.
The motto of the cultural venue is: Good theatre on your
doorstep.

Stoffwechsel (metabolism)
Previously located in the vaulted cellar at Cordulaplatz,
Stoffwechsel events currently take place in the former
Kino Royal. The organiser is regarded as being one of the
foremost addresses in the German-speaking world in
the fields of spoken word and performance poetry. The
true greats of the scene perform on stage here, at close
quarters, surrounded by a hungry audience. Nowhere can
you get more up close and personal with poets. As well
as poets and speakers, occasional cabaret and short film
festivals, new formats such as “Jukebox Stories” requiring
interaction with the public are tried out and developed further. Here, each event has its own story and its own character. The season generally lasts from September to May,
with one event per month. The bar is open both before and
after performances. Further information and details of the
programme are available on the organiser’s website.

(Puppet Theatre)
This small puppet theatre in the Gluri Suter Huus with

now offers an entertaining programme with professional
guest performers from Switzerland and abroad. In addition
to numerous plays for the entire family, productions for
an adult audience are also featured occasionally as the
Figurentheater Wettingen shows how diverse and exciting
contemporary puppet theatre can really be. As well as
guest performances, the theatre’s own productions are

Badener Maske
This amateur theatre was founded in 1945 by five students
in order to breathe fresh life into the city’s theatre scene.
Since then, more than 80 productions have been created
and performed on the Badener Maske’s hallmark stage,
known as the “Thespians’ cart”. Traditionally, productions
are performed on this rolling stage in eastern Switzerland
between the beginning of August and mid-September
every two years, followed by performances in front of loyal
audiences in about 15 locations in the canton of Aargau.
Weather permitting, performances take outdoors.

Junges Theater Baden
The Junges Theater Baden (Young Theatre Baden)
has specialised in walking theatre since 2003. A short
tour helps the audience get in the right mood for the
performance to follow. The scenes and images have no
recognisable plot at this point. Next, set pieces from the
section to follow and individual characters are introduced.
Architectural elements are purposefully incorporated
into the piece, and the entire surroundings become an
extended part of the set. The ensemble is deliberately
composed of a mixture of newcomers, experienced
performers and trained drama teachers. The team, with
anywhere from 13 to 65 years of life experience, works
hard both onstage and behind the scenes, displaying
great enthusiasm and commitment.

Flamencos en route Dance Company
During the 2014/2015 theatre season, this renowned
dance company from Baden celebrated its 30th anniversary. Since 1984, choreographer Brigitta Luisa Merki has
been skilfully combining flamenco with a wide variety

In her own unique way, she maximises the possibilities
of flamenco at the highest level. She dusts off flamenco,
rejuvenates it and gives it a place in today’s high art of
dance. The dance group, comprising outstanding Spanish
and Swiss dancers and musicians, is never afraid to break
new ground.

Museums
Baden Museum of History
The Baden Museum of History is located directly on the
river Limmat across from Baden’s old town. A unique
combination of the medieval Landvogteischloss (Bailiff’s
castle) and the prominent museum construction designed
by the architect duo Stieb from Basel.
The museum shows Baden as a place where ideas are
exchanged. For many centuries, people have come from
around the world to the city on the river Limmat. They
discuss, negotiate – and bathe in its waters. The warm
waters are alluring, envoys meet for the “Tagsatzung”
legislature, guests travel for a medicinal spa and pioneers
form companies.
This new permanent multimedia exhibition entitled
“Geschichte verlinkt” (History connects) offers you a
unique way to navigate through the history of the city
and the region (starting in March 2016). Exhibits link the
history and recount the past of this spa and industrial city.
Surf through the history of the city that has left its mark
on the world.
You can immerse yourself in the past in the medieval
Landvogteischloss (Bailiff’s castle). Meet Mr and Mrs
Landvogt in the kitchen, the Borsinger hotel family in the
Biedermeier parlour or the trendy couple from the 1930s
in the bedroom.
Small children have fun discovering the castle with Frank
the Bat. For older kids, there are interactive stations for
them to try out on their own.
The new museum café with its superb coffee and a view
of the old town round off the visit to the museum.

public as a residential and art museum. The legacy of
industrialists and collectors Sidney and Jenny Brown
houses work from an important French impressionist, an
18th century Venetian collection of vedutas (land- and
cityscapes), as well as rare Asian art. The living areas,
resplendent with French furniture, give a wonderful
impression of the lifestyle of this founding family. The
well-manicured park invites you to while away your time
with a picnic.
The Museum Langmatt organises many events and guided
tours in tune with the seasons and their related festivities.

(Swiss Museum of Childhood)
Imagine entering a big old house and discovering the traces
of your ancestors. Your mother’s red leather satchel hangs
in the schoolroom. You find a toy space ship that once belonged to your father, reflecting a step into the modern age.
You spot the shiny steam engine your grandfather played
with as a child. And in your great-grandmother’s dollhouse,
you will discover how people used to live.
In a villa from 1890, the museum shows historical and
current developments related to children over the last 300
years. Objects from children’s everyday life, games and
toys, teaching material from kindergarten and school as
well as children’s books are displayed. The museum also
offers countless possibilities to discover, try out and play
with the exhibits. Unknown worlds of children’s culture are
opened up in special shows. The children’s museum is a
lively place which fascinates both young and old.
From October to April, the museum offers an exciting programme of activities that enable both children and adults to
observe, be amazed, experiment and try out their creativity.

Art
Kunstraum Baden (Baden Art Gallery)
The Kunstraum Baden sets trends and gives art a big
presence. Shooting stars, newcomers and old masters
are shown in monographic or thematic projects. These
projects are developed specifically for the location by the
artists in close cooperation with the management of the
Kunstraum, and cover the entire range of what art can and
should be. Whether conventional or experimental, affir
mative or critical, political and social or simply formal – the
Kunstraum aims to make art accessible and stimulate
people’s interest in engaging with it.
For around four decades, the city of Baden has been operating its own, non-commercial exhibition space. During
this time, the institution, which was initially located in the
“Kornhaus” granary and then in the Amtshimmel, has
become a small art gallery. Nowadays, the Kunstraum is
a stone’s throw away from the train station in a former
factory building of the Baden regional power plant.

Die vier Jahreszeiten (The four seasons)
In the public space at Halle 37, Trafo Baden,
Halls + hotel
At Trafo-Halle 37, art presents a different face to visitors,
depending on the perspective, lighting and season.
Ugo Rondinone brings together art and architecture in the
hall with his work “Die vier Jahreszeiten”.
Using what may seem like unusually large dimensions to
us, Ugo Rondinone intervenes in an impressive yet simple
way. The work is composed of 660 glass panes in a wide
array of colours – 400 m2 of art. Ugo Rondinone puts
on international exhibitions and his work was presented
in Aargau for the first time during his solo exhibition at
the Aargaurer Kunsthaus Aarau in 2010. It is something
wonderful and not to be taken for granted when private
investors initiate, finance and hold competitions for art.

The city library is a meeting place and a place of intergenerative and intercultural dialogue. The library has a
wide range of media available for loan: literature in many
languages, non-fiction media, e-books, comics, magazines and newspapers, as well as audio books, music CDs,
DVDs and Blu-ray DVDs.
In the library, there are activities for children, young p eople

The media activities are enhanced by games and toys. The
library offers an extensive programme of events and acti
vities. In meetings and reading groups, adults can cultivate
the linguistic and cross-cultural exchange of ideas in a
variety of ways. The library has a quiet area with working

Merker-Areal premises
In the distinctive “Yellow Square”, where washing
machines and household appliances were once
manufactured, an attractive and centrally-located working
and residential district has emerged. Instead of tearing
down old factory halls and replacing them with new buildings, the original industrial structure – with historical and
cultural value for the city – was preserved.
Today, around 80 tenants from diverse sectors use the
former factory premises as their professional base. The
Merker-Areal has developed into an urban microcosm, a
centre for architecture, art, communication and services.
Various cultural institutions are represented here, including
the Figura Theatre Festival and the Fantoche International
Animation Film Festival, which have helped turn the
Merker-Areal into a festival hotspot.
The former dispatch building in the centre is now the
unique restaurant “Speditionsgebäude” featuring a bright
hall for events on the first floor. The Stanzerei provides a
further exceptional cultural venue on the premises.
The spacious area of the inner courtyard of the “Yellow
Square” was covered with a colourful “woven carpet”
created by artist Beat Zoderer, AZ-award winner 2009,
breathing fresh life into the courtyard.
Alte Schmiede/Werkkk Kulturlokal Baden
Free space for thinking and making a difference
for the entire population
With its combination of a cultural youth centre with a
restaurant, an event arena with an outside room, band
rehearsal rooms and an atelier, the city of Baden is beginning a new chapter in the history of youth work and
cultural advancement. On the one hand, a new meeting
place has been created by bringing the Werkk and its
bar to life. On the other hand, the hall space of the old
blacksmith’s forge offers a unique industrial ambience:
with its design and shape, it is a one-of-a-kind location
for Baden, the region and beyond which can be used to
make creative ideas and projects a reality.

As a follow-up to the “Bauhaus” style, appliance
manufacturer Braun revolutionised industrial products
in the 1950s. Regardless of which utilitarian object is
involved, the Braun company was behind the simple,
self-explanatory design. Prof. Dieter Rams, head designer, had this to say: “My goal is to remove anything
superfluous so that the essential comes to the forefront.” This was reason enough for Joan and Rolf Billing
to gather all these objects together and make them
accessible to the public.

You can rely on us to organise your event, and we are
always available to advise you. It makes no difference
whether you organise a seminar for 10 or for 500 people.
We will be pleased to advise you on your choice of room,
organise your hotel rooms and put together a tailor-made
supporting programme for you.

CONZERT
ADDRESS
NAME
Conferences have been held in Baden for hundreds of
years. As early as 1415, the diplomats of the Old Confederacy met here to negotiate. However, the focus was not only
on business – the pleasurable things in life were equally
important. The diplomats ate, celebrated and of course
bathed with the greatest of pleasure in the Baden thermal
springs. During this time, they discussed, debated,
laughed and made decisions. The beautiful and historic
“Tagsatzungssaal” (legislative chamber) is one of the silent
witnesses of the past.
Thanks to its outstanding location and modern infrastructure, Baden remains an ideal location for congresses, conferences and seminars in the Zurich area. The city on the
Limmat also offers a wealth of entertainment and culture, a
unique landscape, many sporting and shopping opportunities and a wide range of restaurants – everything you could
possibly wish for.

Trafo
Where once electrical transformers were manufactured,
now conferences, presentations and celebrations are held.
Accessible from Zurich in only 16 minutes by rail and
3 minutes on foot, the Trafo Baden centre is a great venue
for medium-sized and large companies and a success
factor for your events. Just as consumers are becoming
increasingly demanding, so conference participants expect
a wider range of services. Alongside input in the form of
talks and presentations, face-to-face meetings are once
again becoming ever more important. The individual
programme points change as required since cinema
presentations, group work, voting by SMS, top-class
buffet lunches and good personal exchanges are all part of
the successful conference of the future. All this is possible
under a single roof at the Trafo Baden centre. Companies
such as Hewlett-Packard and Raiffeisen Bank hold
large-scale events here. They appreciate the state-of-theart infrastructure, flexibility, unique design and good links
to the airport, rail system and motorway. The Trafo centre
is also highly praised for the quality of dishes served,
which are prepared in house, and for the cordiality of the
team. In 2015, Baden’s Trafo centre hosted 230 events
with an average of 250 and a total of 64,535 guests.
Trough the new construction project with a hotel,
restaurant and apartments, which was put into operation
in December 2014, represents a further milestone in the
history of the Trafo Baden centre.

Cities that consume 30% less energy?
As a leading producer of energy-efficient solutions, ABB helps
deliver major power savings, without compromising performance.
Our lighting control systems can deliver power savings of up to
50 percent, and our building automation up to 60 percent. While
everyone else is talking about energy prices, power shortages
and climate change, ABB is doing something about it, right here,
right now. www.abb.com/betterworld
Certainly.

«Das Reisen ist mein Leben –
die AKB meine Bank.»
Clare Walker,
Ozeania Reisen AG
