Nuclear reactions create the chemical elements, and they power our Sun and the stable and explosive burning of stars. In several important cases, their cross sections are not precisely known, hampering the interpretation of modern astronomical data. I address this problem by measuring relevant cross sections at the LUNA underground accelerator facility, see a recent review co-authored by me. I advise a LUNA PhD student (Marcell Takács) and lead the LUNA working group on the 22 Ne(p,γ)23 Na experiment. 2. I organized an international workshop and wrote a paper discussing the merits of a higherenergy underground accelerator in the Dresden Felsenkeller. As a consequence, our institute has bought a used 5 MV Pelletron. TU Dresden has granted the necessary funds for preparing Felsenkeller for the accelerator to my collaborator Prof. Kai Zuber. We will start running this underground accelerator spring 2016. 3. Some cross section measurements are best done not underground, but at the surface of the Earth. I use the 3 MV Tandetron facility at HZDR for such experiments. Cases studied include the 12 C(p,γ)13 N, 14 N(p,γ)15 O, and 40 Ca(α,γ)44 Ti reactions. 4. I help develop the NeuLAND detector for 1 GeV neutrons, a part of the R3 B (Reactions with Relativistic Radioactive Beams) experiment at the future FAIR facility in Darmstadt, Germany.
