I’m sure this will be an exciting year for us all as we make new friends, visit with old friends, and make life a little better for the women and children of our community. All summer long our committees have been busy planning many wonderful social events, organizing fundraisers, participating in volunteer opportunities, and improving our communications. Be sure to check out the different committees and their reports in this issue of The Newz. Getting involved with a committee is the best way to make lasting friendships and make the most out of your membership in the Heathrow Women's Club. ! Once again, we will begin our year with a “Chit Chat and Learn” program. This program will give members the opportunity to learn more about the Heathrow Women’s Club and give both 'seasoned' and 'new' members a chance to reacquaint with each other while meeting new friends and guests. Representatives from five of our committees will give a short presentation and have tables set up in the lobby to offer in depth information about their particular areas of the club. This "Learn More about Your Club "portion of the meeting is a great way to find out what we do and how to get involved in social activities and volunteerism with our charities. ! As all of you know, our members are very generous. I am proud to say that extends to our members’ grandchildren as well. Longtime member Apollonia Teske’s grandson Bryce Barnett donated a very nice drum set to the Boys & Girls Club of Central Florida, West Sanford Branch. Check out his picture with the appreciative recipients in this month’s NEWZ. Way to go Bryce! ! I’m very excited to begin yet another year of “socializing with a purpose”! I hope you will join me in making this year our best ever! Remember, your contributions, whether big or small make a difference in the lives of many in our community! ! Kindest Regards, Christine 1 SEPTEMBER LUNCHEON PROGRAM Heathrow Women’s Club kicks off the year, Tuesday, September 9, with a “Chit Chat” and Learn Program “The secret of joy in work is contained in one word, excellence. Patsy Marquardt About an hour from the shores of Lake Erie lies Rawson, Ohio – a sleepy, rural village of 200 where Patsy was born however, her life with husband Don of 58 years was to be a gateway to relocation into twenty homes near and far, throughout her life. Who would have thought this high school cheerleader and her grain farm-raised quarterback would experience the diversity of travel that Don’s professional life was to offer them? And travel they did. A staggering amount of it, I might add. Although Patsy has worked and volunteered tremendously throughout the years, admittedly, her life’s work has been supporting Don’s career and raising 2 little girls into beautiful adults and later, being grandmother to 3 who are now 27, 20 and 18. Over the years, you might have sent their Christmas card to them in London, Manhattan, Chicago, Lancaster, Pa. , Naples, FL or Clinton, NJ (to name a few). They also lived in Mexico City and San Miguel, Mexico. Historic San Miguel is filled with 16th and 17th century buildings and has been voted Conde’ Nast Traveler magazine’s #1 favorite city in the world. Patsy reflects on an area so littered with monarch butterflies that the ground was completely gold. For 22 years, they had a summer home in Portland where one of their daughters lives. They’ve traveled to all 50 states, have taken countless cruises and holidayed to Europe, the Far East and Latin America. Twenty-six days in India was her personal favorite. In 1998, they relocated from their Naples beach home to Heathrow Woods to be closer to their daughter and grandchildren who live in College Park. Seven years ago, they relocated downtown to The Sanctuary where they now enjoy sunsets filtered through the Orlando skyline from the 16th floor – a fabulous setting for her watercolor studio. Patsy is an accomplished watercolor artist who has donated some of her framed paintings to our yearly gala. She has honed her skills through workshops and art study in Florida, Ohio, Lancaster, Illinois, Oregon and NY and is VP of the Central Florida Watercolor Society, a Florida Water Color Society member, Color Pencil Chapter Member and a 2010 volunteer co-chair of the Florida Watercolor Convention. While living in Naples, she was a volunteer at the Von Leich Art Center. In Long Grove, Illinois, Patsy was President of the local women’s club, worked to offer charitable support to a Chicago orphanage and helped with relief efforts after the 8.2 earthquake in Mexico City. In Lancaster, PA, she worked with inner-city children and was a docent at James Buchanan’s home. In Mexico, Patsy cared for babies in villages. When she’s not painting, she finds enjoyment with Don attending the Philharmonic, The Mad Cow Theatre, movies and dining and they are hoping to join the University Club. You can take the girl out of the country but not the country out of the girl – Wendy’s remains her favorite place to eat. Patsy loves the HWC book club, card and social groups. Over the last 16 years, she’s volunteered for numerous committees and organized a book sale at Sawyer Lake Park. The Newz SPOTLIGHT can help us better value our members and Patsy is a great example of the treasures in our club. Her artistic talent, kindly spirit, worldly backdrop and desire to give back make Patsy a true HWC asset. BY CAROLYN TAYLOR 3 ! ! The Ways and Means Committee selects, plans, and executes all of the fundraising events for Heathrow Women’s Club and Heathrow Women’s Club Charities, Inc. Bryce Barnett with representatives from Boys & Girls Club of Central Florida, West Sanford Branch Ways and Means hosts the monthly basket raffle at our luncheon. Each month members donate a basket and then we sell 7 raffle tickets for $5. All money goes to our charities. If you would like to donate a basket or get together with another member to donate, please contact Ginny. We still have several months available. Has anyone done any Spring Cleaning? Cleaned out your garage, attic, storage. unit, etc. Hold onto those items that you want to get rid of and donate them to the Heathrow Women's Club for our annual Yard Sale being held on November 8th. You can drop off those items at Sawyer Lake Park on November 7th. We will take any items except clothing and glass flower vases (the ones that you get when someone gives you a bouquet of flowers). If you don't have the ability to cart your items to the site, please call a Ways and Means Committee member and we will make our best effort to pick those items up from you. So what are you waiting for? Start cleaning, and remember, all the money raised from the Yard Sale goes to the Heathrow Women's Club charities. For those of you who haven’t decided on a committee yet, please consider joining us on Ways & Means. Be a voice in the planning of our events. Don’t be shy, it’s a lot of fun and we need everyone’s help! Remember – many hands make light work.
