The economy of state grows above the national
average for de cade s. Much of this growth is ba se d
on the country 's large st port a ctivity - the state i s
the main gateway to the Brazilian foreign trade.
Also outstanding in the extraction of iron ore in
steel production, pulp production in most of the
country, the large st industry of ornamental r ock s in
the world, the exploita tion of oil and natural ga s, a s
well as diversified agriculture, e spe cially the
planting of coffee .
The E spírito Santo is in a pha se of significa nt
growth. Due to business expansion of a griculture,
tourism and - espe cia lly - the discovery of huge
deposits of oil and ga s. Re cently announce d were
three new wells in the region . The state was close
to 15% in the share of domestic oil production and
is expe cted to reach 500,000 barrels per day by
2015. To do this, Pe trobrás is inve sting US$14 .5
billion this year alone . The State is already today
the second lar gest oil producer in the country and
the fir st natural ga s. I t will grow more with the start
of operations of the new headquarters of Pe trobrás
and all service compa nies around the exploita tion of
oil and gas.
