Now follow the Büchel street.
The Alt Aachener Kaffeestuben – Leo van den Daele
(Café) 6 is situated at the
corner of Büchel/ Körbergasse. The bronze figure outside shows a girl with a large
piece of gingerbread – a delicacy typical of Aachen. Since
1745 the name “Körbergasse”
has been a reference to the
basketmakers who had traditionally settled here.
Now our tour takes us from
the Romaney lane to another
triangular place – the “Hühnermarkt” (chicken market)

The information office of the
aachen tourist service is located in the left wing of this
building. In all museums and
public institutions guided
tours are conducted at fixed
times. The aachen tourist
service offers professional
guided tours of the town
(page 4+5).

Just opposite of the “Bahkauv”
fountain there is the new
Kaiserbad 5 . Beneath this
building: the famous “Kaiserquelle” (a source that springs
here). In direct vicinity to this
thermal-mineral source Charlemagne erected his palace
with a chapel, today’s Cathedral. In the course of the centuries public baths have been
built on this source again and
again. Nowadays, you can see
a special architectural work.
However, it is impossible to
take a bath here – just have a
closer look!
In Aachen’s oldest commercial street, the ”Krämerstraße”,
you can see another interesting fountain, the Puppenbrunnen 18 , with its movable bronze marionettes. The
nearby fountain called Geldbrunnen 19 represents the
circulation of money in
today’s society. Passing the
park we return to our start-

Walking up the Buchkremerstraße we reach the old spa
area of the town. Going on
we pass a hotel which has the
old name of the town: Aquis

the cobble-stoned square
opposite. According to the
legend this monster, the Bahkauv, used to jump on the
shoulders of men returning
home from the pubs late at
night and forced them to
carry him right to their front
door.
Following this street we reach
a triangular place – the “Hof”.

We start our short tour
around the historical centre
of Aachen with the Elisenbrunnen (Elisa Fountain),
1 whose columnar structure
was designed in 1822 by
Friedrich Schinkel. It contains
two fountains with thermal
drinking-water. On the opposite side of the Ursulinerstraße there is a modern
bronze sculpture with three
young people each raising the
little fingers – a traditional
salutation in Aachen called
Klenkes 2 .

The Aachen Town Hall is not a
museum, but has been used as the
city’s administrative centre for centuries. In its halls, Charlemagne
held his legendary celebrations.
Later, German kings and lords had
their banquets in the Coronation
Hall, and today the famous Aachen
Karlspreis is awarded here.
Experience this gothic building with
its baroque interior, where the Lord
Mayor still resides today. Fantastic
copies of the Imperial Insignia of
the German Emperors and Kings are
a reminder of more than 30 coronations that took place in this building.

Anecdotes and
stories
Every old town holds its little secrets and exciting stories. The people of Aachen, who are clever, eloquent and always helpful as well as
the city’s guests of honour, spa
visitors, witches, devils and Karlspreis winners wearing socks, are
part of these stories. This guided
tour follows the Aachen tradition
of “combating deadly seriousness“.

When Charlemagne decided to
build his capital in this spot 1200
years ago, the tiny village of Aha,
the former name for Aachen, suddenly became the centre of the
western world. The building of the
monumental Palace complex, which
was constructed of stone, created
an intellectual, cultural and political centre of power. Major parts of
this Palace complex, including the
Cathedral and Town Hall, have survived the centuries and have always
been the centre of the city of Aachen.
It is not only Charlemagne’s mythic
attraction that will fascinate you,
but also his story as one of the
most interesting historical personalities.

The Cathedral of Aachen is one of
the most famous examples of occidental architecture. It is the coronation church of more than 30
German kings, burial site of Charlemagne, major pilgrimage church
and cathedral church of the Aachen
diocese since 1930. In 1978 it was
the 1st German building to be included in the UNESCO World Heritage
list. A guided tour is therefore an
essential part of any visit to Aachen
and a “must” for anyone who loves
historic buildings and churches (see

Town Hall
Markt
52062 Aachen
tel.: 02 41/432 73 10
In the early 14th century, the citizens of Aachen took over the ruined palace of Charlemagne. On its
foundation they built the gothic
town hall, which was converted
into a baroque building in the 17th
and 18th centuries. The town hall
was seriously damaged in the two
fires of 1656 and 1883 as well as
during Second Wolrd War. 50 statues of German rulers adorn the
north facade; 31 of the kings represented were crowned in Aachen.
Inside of the town hall visitors can
take a look at the Coronation hall
with its famous Rethel frescoes
dating from the 19th century and
copies of the Imperial Crown Jewels
as well as the gothic and baroque
furniture of the building. Every year
the town hall is the location for the
Charlemagne Award.

The museum exhibits works of art
from the modern age to the classical period. A tour of the museum
may start with the modern times
and it finally leads to the Middle
Ages. The main emphasis is put on
the excellent collection of portraits
and sculptures from the late Middle
Ages and the paintings of the 17th
century. Special collections present
themselves as “museum within the
museum”: the gallery of copperplate
engravings, stained-glass exhibits,
craft objects and works of ancient
Greek art. Various exhibitions can
be organized at the same time.

from a collection held by Professor
Ameling of the Technical University
and is the oldest and the only one
of its kind in Germany. The Computer Museum describes the development of computing and data-processing from the abacus to the personal computer and explains a
step-by-step history of data technology in layman’s terms. The
museum reveals mammoth-size
computers dating back to the earliest days of data-processing as well
as modern-day PC’s or pre-war calculating machines. The original
machines, replicas and models provide an easy-to-understand history

Tourism without barriers – travelling, experiencing and enjoying the
world should be possible for everyone.
“At the centre of this worldwide
campaign is the desire for integration of all the different groups of
society via tourism. The idea of
“tourism for all” implies that every
person should be able to travel
independently of any disability
they might have – without disadvantage or restriction of access to
sites of interest.”*
The city of Aachen continuously
strives to make its numerous sites
of interest and visitor attractions
“free of barriers”. The aachen tourist
service is happy to support you in
planning your trip to Aachen. We
will help you with booking your
accommodation and advise you on
day trips to the surrounding area,
supporting programmes and conferences.

… for health
Aachen has been visited for its thermal springs since Roman
times. Indeed, royals of all epochs have visited Aachen.
Charlemagne and Casanova both bathed here, and the large
number of royal guests has lent Aachen the name “Spa of
Kings”.
This tradition still continues today. Contemporary and ultramodern, the spa facilities are available to ease the aches and
pains. The spa of Aachen has no “season”; the health-giving
spring flows all year. Come and give it a try!
