Today the Santa Catalina Island Conser- vancy, protects approximately 42,000 acres of wildlands representing approximately 88% of the Island, including more than 60 miles of undeveloped coastline. You will not want to miss Ann Muscat, Ph.D., President and CEO of the Catalina Island Conservancy speak on her work as CEO of the Conservancy and learn more about "Imagine Catalina,” the Conservancy’s 20-year master plan, that was completed late last November. The Passing of a Lovely Trojan Lady It is with great sadness that we report the passing of our beloved member, Denise Therese Dedeaux. Denise was a dedicated member of Trojan League of Los Angeles and a hard working USC alumna. She attended our general meeting last November 6th at The Valley Hunt Club shortly before her passing on November 19th. How grateful we are to have shared this day with her. Denise joined Trojan League of Los Angeles in 2001 and served on the Board of Directors for 9 years. She served as our Historian on at least two occasions and among other things made a beautiful scrapbook for our archives. Her photos were some of the first published on our website. She was a dedicated member and friend to all. continued on page10 1 2013-14 TROJAN LEAGUE OF LOS ANGELES BOARD OF DIRECTORS Executive Committee: President Mary Rooney President Elect: Kathleen Campos Vice Presidents, Ways and Means: Diane Bleak Marie Chen Vice President, Student Recruitment: Ellen Burson Vice Presidents, Membership: Janice Boswell Charlene Ebright Vice Presidents, Hospitality: Debbie Gilmour Andrea Pott Recording Secretary: Denise Kalunian Corresponding Secretary: Candace Smith Treasurer: Francine Cafarchia Immediate Past President: Marilyn Kezirian Standing and Special Committee Chairmen: Allocations/Future Planning Mary Pallares Alumnae Coordinating Council Sally Edwards Association of Trojan Leagues Carol Greenhalgh Marilyn Kezirian Marcia Kreditor Attendance Christin Moses Bylaws Joann Koll Gourmet Lunch Bunch Betty Jamgotchian-Keushguerian Historian/Press Vicki Krueger New Members Linda Buckingham Nominations Jane Bensussen Professional Liaison Lisa Broderick Programs Alisa Chanpong-Amateau Roster Cathleen Menke Scholarship-Trojan Tribute Christine Ofiesh Scions/Society 53/Scupper Julie Lin Spring Party/Tours of Los Angeles Kathleen Patrick Mandy Viole Telephone/Email Donna Gilmour TraLA Newsletter Mary Rooney USC-Yesterday and Today Vicki McCluggage Website Fran Ciulla President’s Message Dear friends in Trojan League, It is an exciting time to be a USC Trojan League of Los Angeles member! The events scheduled during the upcoming months provide many opportunities for members to learn, to share their passion for USC, to engage in meaningful activities and conversations and to cultivate new relationships with fellow alumni, University officials and administrators, prospective new USC students and prospective new TLLA members. You will not want to miss our annual benefit, Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow: A Global Perspective, showcasing the USC Dana and David Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, which will be held on March 8th at Doheny Library and Town and Gown. Dean Kay and his impressive faculty will address four noteworthy global issues in a manner that will inspire you to think, to question and to better appreciate the way in which USC Dornsife will make a difference in the world. The luncheon keynote speaker, Ann Muscat (PhD BISC ’83) will shed light on one of Southern California's greatest treasures – Catalina Island. I encourage you to support this event as a Patron. Your donation is tax deductible and will enable Trojan League of Los Angeles continue its vital support of USC student scholarships, capital improvements and student recruitment. Our March meeting will immediately follow at Laure Molina's home in Beverly Hills on March 12. Laure is a new member, but has graciously agreed to open her home to us for our next general meeting. Alisa Champong-Amateau, our program chair, is finalizing the details for this meeting and will soon be sharing more information about our speaker. Ellen Burson is hard at work planning our Admitted Student Receptions that will take place in April. These receptions are always a success and serve as important recruiting tools for USC. I encourage you to participate in this unique opportunity to meet potential USC students and their parents in the intimate setting of our members own homes. Our Annual Meeting, honoring Past Presidents and Sustaining Members, will again take place at Michele Engemann's lovely home in Pasadena. I encourage all members to attend. We will be introducing our new members and learning about stroke prevention from our speaker, Dr. Nerses Sanossian, Assistant Professor of Neurology and Associate Director of the Neurocritical Care/Stroke Section at USC. Dr. Nerses serves as the president of the Board of Directors for the American Heart Association of Greater Los Angeles and, in addition to other accolades and awards, has been recognized as the Teacher of the Year in Neurology for the past two years. I encourage you all to consider a board position for the upcoming 2014-2015 year. I will be stepping down in June as President and Kathleen Campos, President Elect, will be taking the helm. The important role that USC Trojan League of Los Angeles continues to play in the University's dynamic life depends upon your involvement. Over the years, the members of Trojan League of Los Angeles have not only acted as ambassadors for the University, but they have also been a strong, but behind the scenes, voice in University affairs. This unwritten legacy must be shared and passed down to future generations. I urge you to make a commitment to this important mission for the coming year. As always, Fight On! In addition to serving as an executive public speaking coach and educator, Alexa is dedicated to philanthropic activities for teens and young women. 3 Members Tour Sunnylands Historic Estate and Gardens TLLA members and their guests traveled to Rancho Mirage on a beautiful day last fall to visit Sunnylands, the 200-acre estate operated by the Annenberg Foundation Trust and the Annenberg Family Trust. The midcentury modern home, located at the Estate, was designed by the Los Angeles-based architect, A. Quincy Jones. Jones was a professor and later a dean of the School of Architecture at the University of Southern California from 1951-1967. Pictured (top left) is Geoffrey Cowan, President of the Annenberg Foundation Trust and TLLA member, Kathleen Patrick. From 1996-2007, Cowan served as dean of the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism. He currently has a joint appointment as a professor with the Annenberg School of Communication and the Gould School of Law. During lunch, Cowan shared valuable information with members regarding Sunnylands’ mission and programs, including the The Declaration of Trust created by Walter and Leonore Annenberg that directs the manner in which Sunnylands may be used. She contacted Linda Buckingham during the summer and was welcomed to membership in December. Some of you may have met Rosanne and her daughter Brianna at our November meeting at the Valley Hunt Club. Rosanne lives in Pasadena and works as a real estate broker with Prudential. She has been active in the Huntington Circle at Huntington Memorial, Trojan Affiliates, and Trojan Junior Auxiliary. Rosanne’s sponsor is Mary Lyon. Welcome, Rosanne! Call for Nominations Now is the time to step forward and volunteer! Your nominating committee will be meeting in February and we need to know what you would like to do for Trojan League next year. Please complete the Call for Nominations Form that was sent to you by mail and return it to me no later than February 15, 2014. We’re looking forward to hearing from you, Jane Bensussen and the Nominating Committee 7 Janet Eddy’s granddaughter, Senior forward Elizabeth Eddy was selected by Sky Blue FC in the fourth round of the 2014 National Women’s Soccer League draft, becoming the seventh USC player in program history to join a women’s professional league. She scored 16 goals over four seasons for the USC women’s soccer team at forward and midfielder. She also started nine times for the USC Women’s Lacrosse team. Jane Bensussen recently helped her mother celebrate her 98th birthday on January 28th. Her mom still lives in her home on 85 acres in Missouri. On top of that, her mother just renewed her driver’s license for three years! The Koll Family celebrated a very busy and happy Christmas and New Years. They were in Newport Beach for the Christmas Boat Parade of Lights for five nights and enjoyed having friends and family on board their yacht, Amazing Grace, each night for dinner and cruising the entire Newport Harbor. They returned home to celebrate Christmas Eve and Christmas Day with their whole family. Two days after Christmas, their immediate family (all 20 of them), flew to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, for a 15-day cruise of the Caribbean aboard the Princess Emerald. At each island, they enjoyed tours of the island, and swam at the beautiful beaches. Ellen Burson and her husband Mark will be celebrating their 30th anniversary on February 19th in San Francisco. She and her husband were engaged in the Carnelian Room in San Francisco and married at Town and Gown! Congratulations Ellen! Mandy Viole has a new job at Bloomingdale’s in the Glendale Galleria. Members can find her in the Men’s department and she is free to assist anyone throughout the store. Betty Jamgotchian and her husband and brother and sister in law traveled to Napa and Sonora last weekend. They enjoyed a weekend of culinary pleasures. They dined at the Crabhouse on Pier 39 in San Francisco, The Girl and the Fig in Sonoma, the Fancy Food Show at the Moscone Center (the largest food specialty food show on the West Coast) and Lalime’s in Berkeley. In Napa, they visited the Oxbow Public Market, which includes local food vendors, artisan cafes and an organic produce outlet for local farms. No wonder Betty organizes our Lunch Bunch events! On December 4, 2013, Trojan League members enjoyed Traditional Tea at the Peninsula Beverly Hills. Members were seated in The Living Room overlooking the garden. The Fireplace was lit and the hotel lobby was festively decorated for the holiday season. Over 30 varieties of tea were offered as well as delicate sandwiches, pastries and fresh scones, all served on custom hand painted china with a delicate floral pattern. It was a wonderful afternoon with lots of lively conversations. On January 22, 2014, members dined at Gordon Ramsay's Boxwood Cafe at the London Hotel in West Hollywood. Ramsay is an award winning international Michelin starred chef and the Bistro style ambiance of the Café was the perfect setting to enjoy DineLA week when the restaurant offered 3 course menus at a special rate. Mandy Viole' 9 Denise Dedeaux continued from front page Kezirian Family establishes Kezirian Memorial Fellowship On Thursday, April 10, 2014, a symposium will showcase the USC Gould School of Law faculty and students engaging in international public service and formally kickoff the A. Peter Kezirian, Jr., ’89 (Gould) Memorial Fellowship in Public Service and International Law. A third generation SCion, Peter was the son of Marilyn Kezirian, ’60, ’62 (Marshall, Rossier) who passed away suddenly and unexpectedly in November, 2012. To receive an in- vitation to attend the colloquium (no admission fee) please send an email to mkezirian@hotmail.com. When fully funded, the fellowship will enable students to engage in international public service projects within the governments of developing nations and countries making difficult transitions to peace, stability and democracy as well as the inter-governmental and non-governmental organizations that support these efforts. Denise was born in Los Angeles on July 20, 1947. She was the daughter of the late Rod and Helen Dedeaux. Her family lived for many years in the Los Feliz area and ultimately moved to Glendale, where Denise continued to live. She attended Mother of God Council Grammar School and Immaculate Heart High School, and remained an active alumna of both. She followed her father and siblings to USC, and graduated with her B.S. in 1970. Denise was always a loyal Trojan sports fan. Her career revolved around the family’s business, Dart Entities, where she worked alongside her father and brothers. In 2011, Denise received the Baseball Alumni Association’s Lifetime Merit Award. An avid and gifted photographer, she was the curator of the family’s history and memorabilia, especially that of her iconic father, Rod Dedeaux’s, famed Trojan baseball-coaching career of 45 years. Denise is survived by her sister and TLLA member, Michele Dedeaux Engemann (Roger), and brothers, Justin (Mary Lin) and Terry Dedeaux (Christine). Denise was a devoted aunt to eleven nieces and nephews, six grandnieces, and two grandnephews, and a godparent to several additional children. Denise shared a long and loving relationship with fellow Trojan, Shelly Andrens; he treasures the many years they had together. Donations in Denise’s memory can be made to Trojan League of Los Angeles, Town and Gown of USC or to the Dedeaux Foundation, c/o Dart Entities. We remember Denise as a warm and thoughtful lady who enjoyed her many friendships in Trojan League of Los Angeles. We share our sympathy with her family and many friends. TLLA has a new look! This USC Dahlia was found at The Butchart’s Garden in Victoria, BC. Photo by Vicki Krueger. 10 As you can see from this newsletter, TLLA has a new look. At the November ACC meeting, Danielle Stinson, Senior Director of Alumni Relations, presented each League President with a banner reflecting the logo designed by the University for their league’s use. The designs can be found on the USC website at the following link: alumni.USC.edu/identity; alumni.usc.edu/graphicresources. Per the newly executed Charter Agreement, the old logo that was lovingly designed by TLLA members when Vicki McCluggage was President has been retired and will be archived in our history as the first TLLA logo!
