Marketing Tactics

All marketing requires an investment. That investment can be dollars or time, but there is no getting
around the need for one or the other. With that in mind, here are eight low cost/no cost marketing tactics
that yield results all out of proportion to the investment.
MOBILE ADVERTISING
Your vehicles are more than service trucks.
They are mobile billboards which can build
surprisingly strong brand awareness if
they are well designed. Think about the
international freight company, DHL. The
company does little broadcast advertising,
preferring digital and print. Its budget is a
fraction of its competitors’. Yet, as soon as
you read DHL, you probably thought, “big
yellow trucks.”
DHL’s most powerful advertising initiative
is the company’s fleet of delivery vehicles.
Likewise, your most powerful advertising
can come from a well-designed wrap on
your vehicles.
Select any base colour except white. Focus
on the logo and website URL. Make them
big. Keep clutter to a minimum. Use
a professional graphics designer. Do it
right. Don’t worry about the expense. It’s
a pittance compared to the results you will
achieve.
PERSONAL NETWORKING
Within every community are “centres of
influence.” These are the people others
call for recommendations. Centres of
influence are connected people. They are
networked. To reach them, join networking
groups (e.g., BNI, Netweavers, LeTip) and
community service organizations (e.g.,
Rotary, Kiwanis, Lions, Optimist). Some
of these organizations meet over breakfast
or lunch. If you are going to eat breakfast
or lunch anyway, you should eat with
community Centres of Influence.
The average Facebook user has 338 friends.
If you join a service club with 50 members
and each member only has 300 friends in
your community that equals 15,000 people
who personally know someone who can
make a personal recommendation about
your business. Join two or three groups
and you can personally build a substantial
referral machine over a few meals each
week.
WEBSITE
A website is as essential as a phone number
today. You are handicapping yourself
without one. There is, however, a world
of difference between a website and a good
website.
A well-designed website will give consumers
all of the information they need when
selecting a contractor. It will inform them
about the service and replacement process,
helping to differentiate your company,
helping you close more business. It will
also adhere to the latest principles of good
search engine optimization (SEO), which
are constantly in a state of flux, driving
you higher in search engine rankings.
Putting this type of website together is
beyond the capabilities of most contractors.
You are contractors, not web designers.
However, there are affordable industry
resources. These include Online-Access.com,
FootbridgeMedia.com, PlumberMarketing.
com and IMSAdvertising.com.
AFFINITY MARKETING
Affinity marketing involves leveraging the
loyalty of groups that share a common
affinity, like homeowners associations,
churches, booster clubs and other clubs and
charitable organizations. In an affinity
marketing program, you make a donation
to the affinity group/charity whenever
someone supporting the charity buys from
you. The marketing is up to the group
leadership. They promote your business
to their supporters, which becomes a tacit
endorsement. Moreover, affinity marketing
is “pay as you go.” Until someone buys, it
costs nothing.

More and more often, people are turning
to the Internet for information on their
purchases, especially significant purchases.
Fortunately, you can have a voice on the
Internet. Start your own blog. Explain in
no-nonsense terms what can go wrong with
a heating and air conditioning system,
making sure you put a local spin every post
to nudge it up in the search results from
local consumers.
Do not worry about the guy who uses your
blog to fix his system himself. He is unlikely
to buy from you in the first place. Plus,
there is always the chance he will determine
the work is beyond his skill level and call
you or get in over his head and call you.
Make your blog post titles match the
questions consumers might ask. For
example, you might post something like,
“Why does my furnace smell funny?” Or,
“Why is my heater noisy?” Or, “Why does
my toilet make a gurgling sound when
flushed?”
To give it a local slant, change the post title
to, “Why are heaters in Edmonton noisy?”
Or, “An Edmonton homeowner wonders
why his heater is noisy.” Or, “Noisy toilet
in Edmonton.”
Blogging not only attracts eyeballs and
boosts search engine results. When you
blog, you are positioning yourself as an
expert. You are setting yourself apart from
your competitors.
If you need help writing your blog posts,
advertise in Craig’s List for a freelance
copywriter who lives in your community.
You talk through your thoughts with the
freelancer, who turns it into a blog post.
Freelancers are surprisingly affordable.
VIDEO
Blogging isn’t the only way to boost your
credibility. A number of contractors are
creating short videos along the lines of
blog posts and hosting them on YouTube,
Facebook and other video sites. Some
people prefer video over copy, which is
why YouTube is second only to Google for
searches.
The production quality does not have to be
perfect if the information is good. What is
important is tagging the video and writing
a complete description that is tantamount

your business
to a transcription. Search engines can read
descriptions. They cannot read video.
Blogs and videos complement each other.
In fact, each video can be a blog post. Every
blog post can be turned into a video.
EMAIL MARKETING
Consumers have a bad habit of forgetting
the name of contractors they recently did
business with. It is up to you to ensure they
remember. Along with furnace stickers and
refrigerator magnets, email can be one of
the most cost-effective ways to remain top-ofmind with your customers. Once a quarter,
send your customers an email newsletter
that is focused on consumer interests, not
your company. Once a quarter, send a
simple consumer information article that
can also serve as a blog post. Finally, once
a quarter send a “friends and family”
coupon for special savings.
It is easy to capture your customer’s email
addresses. You merely need to give a reason
for providing it. The CSR can ask for an
email address to send the customer a special
coupon good for $5 to $10 off the day’s
service. Or, ask for the email address to send
a picture and bio of the technician being
dispatched. At the end of a call, you can
ask for the email address so you can send
a receipt and warranty information. People
will provide their email addresses if you
provide them with a reason to have them.
Do not use your company email server
for email marketing. Use a reputable
mail list provider like Constant Contact
or Mail Chimp. This will increase your
deliverability rate, provide you with
tracking data and keep your company
address from being blacklisted.
SOCIAL MEDIA
Few contractors use social media well.
Those who have figured out effective
ways to use it find that it very affordably
generates leads and builds their brands.
Of the various social media sites, Facebook
is the single most popular with your target
demographic. While you should create a
company page and encourage followers, you
may get more results from your personal
Facebook account.
Use Facebook to build relationships and
to interact with people. Be interesting. Be
human. Be real. Be fun. And every now
and then, when the call board is looking
a little anorexic, throw out a coupon or
special offer. Upload it as an image and tag
your employees so it will appear on their
walls before their family and friends.
Social media works best when it can
reinforce other efforts like your blog and
videos. Think of it as networking from
your desk.

irst designed more than 65 years ago, hand dryer technologies
have changed very little. Machines use hot air to evaporate water
from hands, some taking as long as 43 seconds to dry hands.
What seemed like a stagnant market with little invention, Dyson
engineers sought to solve the issue of ineffective hand dryers.
Developed by a team of 125 engineers over three years, they
designed an entirely new type of hand dryer focused on making the
most hygienic and sustainable machines.

V4 is the only hand dryer motor powerful enough to draw in up to

t this year’s Milwaukee Media
Event, the company debuted the
9.0 Ah battery, which it dubbed
“High Demand”. These new Milwaukee
9.0 Ah batteries provide over twice
the work of a 5.0 Ah battery because
they can run cooler and with greater
efficiency. To give you an idea of how this
translates into a real world application,
a Milwaukee cordless circular saw
equipped with their M18 Red Lithium
High Demand 9.0 Ah battery can make
258 cuts of 2×10 lumber.
For comparison, Hilti’s 36V circular saw
did 173 cuts of 2x10 lumber. If 2x4s are
your mainstay, then realize that a single
Milwaukee 9.0 Ah battery can make 537
of those cuts—that’s astronomical and
likely a full day’s worth of work. In fact at
the 2014 Milwaukee media event, they
were bragging that the new Milwaukee
FUEL M18 circular saw made 233 cuts
of 2×4 lumber so the High Demand 9.0
Ah battery is a real work horse and
a game changer. The times; they are

So how do you get more than twice the

energy flow. The Milwaukee 9.0
Ah batteries are more efficient thanks to
wide channels which feed voltage across
the cells. They also run cooler. Heat is
the enemy of batteries and a cooler pack
can accomplish more work.
I knew the future of tools lay with
cordless technology, but I hadn’t thought
we’d get quite this far this quickly.

have 5 cells in three staggered rows,
distributing the power in such a way
as to keep the pack compact—it’s only
slightly larger than a 4.0 or 5.0 Ah
pack. They also retain all the features

About System Evacuation

he need for evacuation is often
misunderstood. Evacuation is the
process by which we remove all
foreign gases from a built up refrigeration
system. Before placing a system in
operation all gases that entered the system
while building it up must be removed
before adding the refrigerant.
Refrigerant is made up of components that
will cause great harm if combined with
different components in the air. Water
being the most damaging component; is
the one we watch out for most often.
Water mixed with refrigerants can cause
acids that are strong enough to eat away
the strongest of all the materials used in
the system.
The electric motors are wound with
wiring that is coated with an insulting
material that is easily dissolved by the
acid produced with moisture as it is
mixed with refrigerant. This acid will
also allow copper ions to attach to the
bearings in the mechanical portions of
the compressor. The copper coating that
forms tightens the bearings and cause the
energy consumed by the compressor to
increase. It also reduces the space for the
lubricants to work and causes the bearings
to wear prematurely. This premature
wear shortens the life of the compressor.
Evacuation is not just to remove air from
the system but also to increase the life of
the system. Failing to properly evacuate
a system is a practice that will allow
the customer to mistrust the technician
as well as the company employing the
technician.
The problem that presents itself does not
happen immediately. It takes months for
the acid that is produced to begin its attack
on the system. We as professionals are
commissioned with the responsibility to
train the others we guide to understand the
full nature of the effect. We are to teach
them the long-term affects of not doing the
proper start up procedures, preventing the
opportunity for acids to be developed.
14 • SUMMER ’15 • CONTRACTING CANADA When installing an evaporator coil on an
existing system a technician often thinks
it is ok to just purge the coil through the
suction line to remove the non-condensable
gases. Nothing could be farther from the
truth. Refrigerant will travel through the
coil and flow under the non-condensable
gases. Some of the non-condensable gases
will be forced out by a Ventura action but
not all of them.
A vacuum is the only way to be sure
the system is free of all non-condensable
gases. Compressor manufacturers when
changing out a compressor recommend a
vacuum of 500 microns. It is my opinion
that the same should be followed with
each component change out. Many in the
field have agreed that 750 microns is an
acceptable level. A good filter drier will
help protect the system after this level of
vacuum.
A vacuum pump should be tested to insure
that it has the ability to pull down to a
500-micron range. Place a micron gauge
on the tubing connected to the vacuum
pump inlet fitting and start the vacuum
pump. Observe the drop in pressure as
the pump runs. As the pressure drops
the time will increase between each
range. If the pump stops at a range above
500-microns, the pump may be weak or
the test set-up indicates an atmospheric
leak. Close the valves to the tubing
connected to the gauge, stop the pump
and observe the reading. A rise in
pressure will indicate a leak in the
gauge or tubing. A steady pressure
reading greater than 500-microns will
indicate a weak vacuum pump. If a
leak is indicated, the problem must be
located and repaired before continuing
the test.
When evacuating a system be certain that
all isolating valves are open. When solenoid
valves are utilized be certain that they are
manually opened or energized if need be.
An area of the system could capture noncondensable gases or refrigerant if they
are closed.
Connect the manifold gauge set to both
the high side and low side of the system.
Connect the centre service hose from
the manifold gauge set to the inlet of the
vacuum pump. A micron gauge can be
added to the system in a remote location
from the service ports to insure the entire
system is drawing down properly as the
vacuum pump operates. Once the micron
gauge reaches 500 microns the technician
is insured the system is free of moisture
and non-condensable gases.
A built up system that has been properly
evacuated will have a greater chance for
a long healthy life. A c o m p a n y

20V Max vs. 18V: Which is
the More Powerful Battery?

L
et me start by saying if I only had a quarter for every time I
heard someone say, “There was a major difference in power
when I switched from an 18V system to a 20V system,” I’d
have a lot of quarters.
The 18V vs. 20V Max debate goes on no matter how many times I
step into someone else’s conversation and explain it to them. So let
me take the drama out of the conversation now and set the record
straight – they’re the same.
3.6 volts (nominal) x 5 cells = 18 volts
4 volts (maximum) 5 cells = 20 volts
That’s it. That’s the entire difference in 18V vs. 20V Max batteries.
It’s only a matter of whether the company is using nominal voltage
or maximum voltage as their rating.
20V MAX VS. 18V: RUNNING THE NUMBERS

Each one of those battery cells
has two voltage ratings – nominal
and maximum. The amount of
voltage that a battery produces
when fully charged is higher than
when it begins to discharge, even
slightly. It’s actually a chemical
characteristic of the lithium-ion
system. Each battery cell has a nominal voltage of 3.6 volts and a
maximum voltage of slightly more than 4 volts.

I’d love to stop there, but people will insist on arguing that the 20V
Max systems are simply more powerful than 18V because, well, 20
is bigger than 18. (sigh)
Seriously though, I love talking about this stuff, so let’s jump on it.
In the North American markets, manufacturers such as Bosch®,
Milwaukee®, Ridgid®, Ryobi® and Makita® are all running on
an 18V battery platform. DeWalt® and Porter-Cable® run on their
20V Max systems. A volt meter is all that it takes to offer some
quantifiable data, and a look inside the battery will show you why.

20V MAX VS. 18V: WHAT ABOUT HIGHER AND
LOWER VOLTAGE SYSTEMS?
This brings up several interesting talking points. First, many
European countries are stricter on how a company can advertise.
You’ll find that tools are sold by their nominal voltage in most areas.
That means 18V high power tools and 10.8 volt lower power tools.
From a marketing standpoint, being able to put a higher number on
the tool makes it seem more powerful. Putting a nominal voltage
on it is a representation of where the battery operated most of the
time.
For some reason, 20V Max vs. 18V debate only seems to be an
issue among these five-cell group platforms. Everyone advertises
their 12V line (three cells), not their 10.8V families. Jump up to
OPE (Outdoor Power Equipment) and we get 40V systems (10
cells) that are taking the place of the 36V platforms of a couple
of years ago. So, before you leave with a bad taste in your mouth
about DeWalt® or Porter-Cable®, understand that everyone does
it somewhere.
20V MAX VS. 18V: THERE’S A REASON IT SAYS
“MAX*”
Speaking of DeWalt® and Porter-Cable®, you’ll notice on their
packaging that it is marked 20V Max*. That asterisk and the word
“Max” points to the documentation that clearly states the voltage
is maximum. Is it a marketing tactic? Yes. Is it misleading? Only if
you don’t look for an explanation when you see something marked
with an asterisk.
