Selection Summary
Honeybees live in groups called a colony in a nest known as a hive.
A colony has one queen bee, thousands of worker bees, and a few
hundred drones. Bees collect pollen and nectar, which they turn into
honey. The life cycle of honeybees, like that of other insects, goes
from egg to larva to pupa to adult.

Build Background
Read the title to children and talk with them about bees. Encourage children to use their
knowledge of bees to think about the book. Ask questions such as the following: ¿Les dan
miedo las abejas? ¿Qué clase de cosas ven hacer a las abejas?
Introduce the Text
Guide children through the text, noting important ideas, and helping with unfamiliar
language and vocabulary so they can read the text successfully. Here are some
suggestions:
Page 2: Explain that this book gives facts about honeybees and their life cycle—
how a bee gets from egg to adult. Remind children that a table of contents lists the
sections of a book and the page on which the section begins.
Suggested language: Miren el índice de la página 2. Si quisieran leer sobre abejas
obreras, ¿a qué página irían?
Page 4: Miren la foto. ¿Qué está pasando en la rama de este árbol? El rótulo dice

Fluency
Invite children to choose a passage from the text to read aloud. Have them demonstrate
appropriate stress on words, pausing and phrasing, intonation, and use of punctuation.
Phonics and Word Work
Provide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities:
• Build Sentences Materials: index cards. Write high-frequency words and the content
words zánganos and colmena from Las abejas hacen miel on index cards. Have
children build sentences using the word cards. Have them read the sentences aloud
and illustrate them if they wish.
• Build Words Materials: whiteboards, markers. Write these syllables on three cards: o,
bre, ras. Have children put the letters together to make a word from the story, blend
the syllables, and say the word: obreras. Repeat for other words in the story.
