Young Dear Friends of Cincinnati Parks, As winter fades away we look forward to an exciting spring for our Cincinnati Parks! Spring and summer will welcome guests into our magnificent parks and we, at the Parks Foundation, are working hard advocating to keep our parks beautiful, clean, accessible, safe and free for all to enjoy! Spring also marks the return of great activity within our parks. The Women’s Committee is working tirelessly on the Hat Luncheon to be held on May 22nd at Smale Riverfront Park and we are working on the many events that connect people with our parks during the summer. The construction on Carol Ann’s Carousel is making significant progress. The revitalization efforts for French Park are underway. Each shovel of dirt moved and blade of grass rising from a dormant winter sleep springs our parks forward. And while you and friends and family enjoy our parks, consider making a donation to keep our parks outstanding. Even a modest donation can make a significant impact. For more information on how to contribute please visit www.cincinnatiparksfoundation.org or call (513) 357-2616. I am pleased to assume the role of President of this outstanding organization whose mission is to educate, advocate, and raise money for the parks we love. I thank Judy Dalambakis for the job she has done over the past two years as President and I am honored to follow and build upon the work she and our Board have done. There is so much more to do to maintain the 5,000 acres of land entrusted to our care. With your help, we can do more than maintain, we can offer memorable experiences in our parks as we are everyone’s backyard. *Past President + Emeritus Susan L. Luther Charitable Trust/Fifth Third Bank Trustee and Narley L. Haley, Co-Trustees You won’t want to miss this year’s butterfly show––as the entire Krohn Conservatory will be transformed into a showcase highlighting the life, culture and country of Costa Rica. From the beautifully painted authentic oxen cart that will greet each visitor to the “cloud forest” that will appear in the Palm House; to the Living Greenhouse display in the Fern House; and the beautiful species of butterflies surrounded by replicas of iconic stone sculptures in the Showroom, visitors will experience and be immersed in all things Costa Rica! The phrase Pura Vida means “pure life" and captures the Costa Ricans’ eternally optimistic spirit. As a people, they are inspired by their deep passion and gratitude for nature, feelings strongly reflected in both ancient and modern Costa Rican art and culture. Pre-Columbian cultures knew their survival was dependent upon their environment. Similarly, modern Costa Ricans understand the many ways in which they benefit from their environment, so they are fiercely protective of it. Over one quarter of the land in Costa Rica has been reserved for protected areas and national parks. The abundance of biodiversity found in this ecologically rich nation is especially revered by eco-tourists. The 2014 Krohn Conservatory Butterfly Show has something for everyone. School groups can book a visit online; photographers can come for special photo nights; adults can enjoy the show and a craft beer on our “Crafts and Crafts” night; and new this year, families can come in the evening during our special family nights. Haile, Jr./US Bank Foundation) will light up the “front porch” of Smale Riverfront Park. Located just west of the Roebling Suspension Bridge, the Carousel will be a major new attraction for our region. The Cincinnati Parks Foundation is offering you an opportunity to be part of our riverfront history by making a gift of $500 or more. One of the glass walls that will surround the carousel will serve as the backdrop for acknowledging all those who have contributed to the carousel. Why not join the fun and give a gift that you, your family and the community will enjoy for generations to come. Visit us at www. cincinnatiparksfoundation.org for more details or call Suzy Dorward at (513) 357-2616. Our Footprint Expands at Smale Riverfront Park with a $4.5 Million Federal Fund Allocation Thanks to Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Senator Rob Portman (R-OH), Speaker of the House, Congressman John Boehner (R-OH), Congressman Steve Chabot (R-OH), Congressman Bob Gibbs (ROH) and Congressman Brad Wenstrup (R-OH), Smale Riverfront Park will continue its progress. The U.S. Army Corp of Engineers has allocated $4.5 million in federal funding for Smale Riverfront Park – to control erosion and prevent flooding. This allocation brings the total investment in our riverfront by the Corp of Engineers to $15 million. “It’s another wonderful day in Cincinnati when we speak with a single, resonate voice – all of us intent on ensuring that Smale Riverfront Park will emerge as the premier destination park it was always envisioned to become,” said Willie F. Carden, Jr., Director of Cincinnati Parks. 6 | cincinnatiparksfoundation.org J onathan Queen has been commissioned by the Cincinnati Park Board and the Carol Ann and Ralph V. Haile Foundation/US Bank to create the paintings that will be on the fascia of Carol Ann’s Carousel. Jonathan, a local Cincinnati artist, will spend over 20 months working on 16 murals that will represent different Cincinnati Park scenes. Keeping with the overall feel of a carousel, each scene will whimsically display one or more animals “enjoying” the parks. “I am designing the carousel paintings to feature and celebrate the beautiful landmarks and landscapes of the Cincinnati Parks. Hopefully, they will spark memories and tap into the nostalgia of the rich history tied to the parks,” said Mr. Queen. “The figures I’m including are a way to supplement the scenes and activate the spaces with park visitors. The animals consist of those chosen to be carved on the carousel as well as local wildlife. These characters are enjoying the parks and I hope they inspire the viewers to explore what the parks have to offer.” Working with ArtWorks and Tamara Harkavy in 2012 on a summer project, Queen really made a mark in Cincinnati as he is responsible for the “Fresh Harvest” mural that appears on the Kroger Building facing Central Parkway. In addition to the 16 paintings, Queen will work with a team of ArtWorks interns, again this summer, to paint the 16 inside panels for the center of the Carousel. "The interior paintings will include historic Cincinnati landmarks such as the Tyler Davidson Fountain and Union Terminal, as well as some lost icons like the Mt. Adams Incline and Crosley Field. Each image will be flanked by flying pigs holding a banner with the title of the scene,” added Mr. Queen. If you would like to purchase one of the interior paintings, you can do so for $2,500. Please call Suzy Dorward at 513357-2616 for details. Coming Soon! French Park is a wonderfully popular park that is in need of some refreshing. The Cincinnati Park Board and Cincinnati Parks Foundation is in the process of talking to potential donors to get their input on the plans to renovate the park shelter, comfort stations, playground and surrounding areas at a cost of $1.6 million. If you are interested in working on this campaign or making a contribution, please call Suzy Dorward at 357-2616. by Bob White, White Photography. 8Photo | cincinnatiparksfoundation.org The Oliver Family Foundation Provides Boost to Smale Riverfront Parks’ Endowment The Cincinnati Parks Foundation received a $1 million gift from the Oliver Family Foundation for the endowment of Smale Riverfront Park. The Oliver Family – including Rich and Debbie Oliver and their children, Jack, Katherine and Molly – have generously contributed resources, talent and time towards the vitality of this park since its planning stages. Debbie co-founded the Women’s Committee at Smale in 2007. “My mother, Gertrude Muhlhauser Oliver, was passionate about nature, greenspaces and parks throughout her life,” said Rich Oliver. “Prior to her passing in 2010, she had an opportunity to see the renderings of the park’s features, and she urged us to work to ensure the park’s endowment would be sufficient to sustain it as a community treasure for years to come.” The endowment for the park is essential for sustaining and maintaining the park well into the future.
