Kyoto Recommends Dining 2015. First Issue Shopping Feature Article: Sagano and Toriimoto Area Recommended Restaurants Recommended Shops Recommended Experience Kyoto Recommends Map Kyoto City Tourism Association Feature Article: Sagano and Toriimoto Area Dining Shopping Experience Experience 2-3 4-5 6 7 8 Kyoto Recommendation Selections Strolling in Sagano and Toriimoto, the classical Kyoto ambience with bamboo forest A little more walking from the central Arashiyama area will bring you to Sagano and Toriimoto area where you can feel another attraction of Kyoto’s history and culture. The area retains good and old rural scenes of Japan as well as a number of historical assets. Enjoy strolling in Sagano and Toriimoto in the slow-moving time. B Hiranoya 平野屋 Hiranoya is a Japanese restaurant standing for 400 years just by the torii shrine gate of Atago Shrine which is widely worshipped as the deity of fire prevention. What diners must not miss at Hiranoya is wild sweet fish (ayu) which are caught in the river running by the restaurant and “Shinko,” a sweet rice dumpling covered with soybean powder and brown sugar. The female manager makes fresh Shinko every morning at her hand. Simple and somewhat nostalgic taste goes very well with matcha green tea or tea with cherry flower – Good option for the afternoon tea stop during your exploration in the area. Hiranoya’s architecture is another must-see. The thatched roof house is such an asset of history. In their old kitchen, there still attests a traditional cooking furnace working every day which reminds people of good old life of Japan. Hiranoya’s long-standing presence and Toriimoto area’s serene air welcomes people into exceptional Japanese experience. *Renovation will be continued until end of April, 2015; Hiranoya will be open in the annex building (as of Mar. 2015).
