Al Declercq had a vision that he could take a 91 year old, 32’ wooden racing sloop, which won the inaugural Bayview Mackinac Race in 1925 and do it again in 2012. With the help of his son Matthew, and Fred and Ward Detwiler, and Ken and Connor Flaska, his vision became a reality. Colpaert On behalf of Bayview Yacht Club, it is my honor and privilege to welcome sailors and racing fans on July 20 for the 89th Bell’s Beer Bayview Mackinac Race. This is truly a wonderful time of the year. Preparations should be finishing up for the more than 200 competitors who will race from Port Huron in Southern Lake Huron, heading north along two courses up to Mackinac Island. This is my favorite time of the year, maintenance is completed, boats are on the water and sailors are ready to race. Our Mackinac Race Committee has gone to great lengths to roll out the red carpet for our guests and is confident that the Bell’s Beer Bayview Mackinac Race will maintain its reputation as one of the most spectacular fresh water sailing events in the world. We are extremely grateful to Bell’s Beer and newly appointed Vice President, Laura Bell, for her recent announcement confirming a sponsorship commitment into 2016. This extended sponsorship, which takes us through our 92nd year, allows the Club to focus on the visibility of the race while further enhancing the Bayview Experience. The Acura “Sailing Under the Stars Charity Preview” presented by Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort will return for its second year on June 15th. This wonderful summer event will serve as the kick off for the race and will feature live entertainment and showcase the delicious cuisine of 25 local restaurants, eateries and sweet shops. Importantly, it also will raise funds and awareness for several local nonprofit organizations, including Autism Speaks, COTS, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Matrix Human Services, Play Place for Autistic Children and Rose Hill Center. Thank you to Doug Fox, owner of Ann Arbor Acura, who helped spearhead this effort. It’s also important to thank Port Huron Mayor, Pauline Repp, and Chris Shepler of Shepler’s Ferry, who have led extensive dredging efforts to address the record low water levels on Lake Huron and The Straits of Mackinac. This year, Mayor Repp had more silt than normal removed from the Black River and Shepler’s thoroughly dredged Mackinac Island, Mackinac City and St. Ignace locations. In addition, Dan Musser of The Grand Hotel helped raise funds from local businesses to dredge the Mackinac Island harbor. I would like to extend my sincerest appreciation to everyone who played a part in these efforts. Sailors and sports fans alike will enjoy the return of the Pro Team Challenge, pitting Detroit’s local sports teams against one another in friendly competition. This race within the race is very popular among our sailors and a fun way for fans to support teams that are selected to represent the Detroit Tigers, Pistons, Red Wings and Lions. The “team boats” that were randomly selected include Windshadow–skippered by Jim Murphy, Rampage–skippered by Matt Haglund, Pterodactyl–skippered by Mark Symonds and Shenanigan–skippered by Dick and Dan Synowiec. Only one winner among the four will receive the Pro Team Challenge Trophy, so I encourage fans to follow along and cheer your favorite team on to victory. Finally, this race takes an entire team to ensure its success, not only for the sailors, but for the more than 10,000 fans who attend all of the ancillary events leading up to the trophy ceremony at Bayview in September. I would like to congratulate 2013 Race Chairman, Carl Bihlmeyer, for taking on such a big event, and all of his volunteers in Detroit, Port Huron, Mackinac Island and on the USCG Cutter Bristol Bay assigned to follow the fleet up to Mackinac Island keeping us safe. I’d also like to thank the Grand Hotel for planning another spectacular awards party for the sailors and their families. I wish all the skippers and crew a fast and enjoyable race to Mackinac where friends and family await our safe arrival. I’ll see you at the Pink Pony when you get to the Island. Enjoy the Bayview Experience! Kent Colpaert, Commodore “Our Mackinac Race Committee has gone to great lengths to roll out the red carpet for our guests and is confident that the Bell’s Beer Bayview Mackinac Race will maintain its reputation as one of the most spectacular fresh water sailing events in the world...” 2 0 1 3 S u m m e r B u r g e e /// 3 Message From the 2013 Race Chairperson S ince I am relatively new to BYC, some of you may wonder how I came to serve as Race Chairman for the 2013 Bell’s Beer Bayview Mackinac Race. Commodore Kent Colpaert approached me and asked if I’d be interested in being the Race Chairman this year and I accepted the position. Commodore Colpaert’s belief in me represents the absolute culmination of all the events that have driven my life in the sport I admire and love. Let me tell you a bit about my sailing background, which I know you can all relate to, because your love of the sport mirrors mine. Sailing has been a lifestyle for my family, and racing has given me many opportunities to grow my skills. Participating in buoy racing has provided great fun, but the real joy and challenges of sailing has come from the 26 Bayview Mackinac Races I have completed. Achieving Old Goat status was earned by crewing with expert sailors such as Tom Kleinhardt (Catalina 38 Forte’) and the Kirkman family (J120 Hot Ticket), which made for many memorable winning moments and great sailing stories. An opportunity to race our cruising boat, Allure, in the Mac Race came through collaboration with the Smith family. After sailing as crew on other boats, it was a Carl Bihl 4 /// 2 0 1 3 S u m m e r B u r g e e Commodore Colpaert’s belief in me represents the absolute culmination of all the events that have driven my life in the sport I admire and love. real thrill to race and win with my own boat. I developed a greater appreciation for all the energy it takes to get a boat ready for this race and know the work that is being done across the fleet to prepare the boats for the race. During these sailing and racing years, I have been a member of the Handicap Review Board for more than 10 years and served as BYC’s Chief Handicapper for five Mac Races. I have also served on the Race Committee teams for the NOOD races, the BYC Thursday night OTD racing and the Harbor Committee at Mackinac Island. If I was not racing, I was working as a volunteer to make racing a great experience for the sailors. Getting on to this year’s Bell’s Beer Bayview Mackinac Race, there are a few changes that you should all be aware of. We are excited to announce a change that the committee feels all participants will appreciate. The winner of the division with the greatest number of boats registered will be awarded the J.L. Hudson Trophy and Flag designating the boat and crew as the overall winner of the race. This is different from past years and we all feel it will make the competition stronger. Also, for 2013, boats will finish the race in a westward direction through the Straits of Mackinac with the finish line off the Round Island Light as pictured in this year’s race logo. In my experience, the best part of the event is meeting new people and working with many others to reach a common goal, to put on a great event. Our volunteer base is tops and cannot be beat. Once again with 200+ strong we approach our job with thoughts of continuous improvement, and when we leave the Island on Wednesday, that goal will have been achieved. It’s fun to see the volunteers at work, making all the right moves to provide the racers with great satisfaction. It can be seen while preparing in Detroit, heading to Port Huron for the start, then on to the Mackinac Island finish and through to our famous, super awards “happening” on Tuesday afternoon. The Grand Hotel provides the beautiful venue, Endless Summer, our entertainment for the afternoon, will move you, while Jonathan Witz & Associates promises enhanced activities for children—a total family affair. In the 89th year of this historic race, two Bayview Yacht Club members/sailors will earn Grand Ram status, which means they will have completed 50 Mackinac races. I’m pleased to note that Commodore Dean Balcirak (Sea Fever) of Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan, and John Tipp (Yare) of Troy, Michigan, will achieve this honor. meyer We are proud, and grateful to our sponsors, because their support helps raise the visibility of the race and of Bayview Yacht Club. Kudos goes to our long list of race sponsors, starting with Bell’s Brewery, Laura Bell, Vice President, has extended our relationship for two more years, to 2016. This also allows us to concentrate on the factors that make the race experience as fantastic as it can be. Other honored sponsors include the Grand Hotel, Acura Advance, Shepler’s Official Ferry Service, Legal Copy Services, the BYC Foundation, AitkenOrmond Agency, Soaring Eagle Casino, Doyle Sails, Michigan Gas, Frankenmuth Insurance and Barefoot Wine & Bubbly. As you start your trek north, please take a minute to remember all the sponsors and volunteers who make this event a success. When you arrive at the island, reach out to all of them, shake their hands, shower them with praise and remember they are there to make you, the customer, happy and proud to complete another “Jewel of July” event— safe and sound. To the BYC Staff, RC Volunteers and Sponsors—THANK YOU for all your help and expertise to make my time as Race Chairman a great one. To the many past chairmen that were my mentors— THANKS! And to Art LeVassuer (2014), and Peter Wenzler (2015), have FUN in the years to come. Fair winds, as “a gentleman never goes to weather.” Have FUN on your trip and see you at Mackinac Island where the real FUN begins. u 2 0 1 3 S u m m e r B u r g e e /// 5 Straits of Mackinac Society T he Straits of Mackinac Society was founded by Bayview Yacht Club to honor all Mackinac Race Committee personnel who have served the committee for 15 years. Members of the Straits of Mackinac Society are known as “Old Forts”: our heroes who have worked in the background with such dedication for so many years deserve proper recognition. Without their untiring efforts there would not be a starting cannon, or any race at all. We wish to thank the many men and women who have served Bayview Yacht Club and the sailing fraternity over the years by honoring them with membership in the Straits of Mackinac Society.u Mackinac Race Committee personnel who have served the committee for 15 years. She has been accepted as a member of the prestigious Straits of Mackinac Society, signifying 15 or more years as an enthusiastic Race Committee Member. Her most notable and enduring position is the allimportant “voice of Mackinac.” After finishing the race, racing in all kinds of conditions, sometimes cranky, the skippers call in with finish details and are greeted with the most soothing and elegant voice, “welcome, skipper, to Mackinac Island…” We could not pull off this tremendous event as we do without the unfailing efforts of all our volunteers, and Dee, your selection as 2013 Race Committee Member of the Year is a tribute to all that you have done on our behalf. It is a real pleasure hearing that beautiful voice upon arrival “at the Island.” THANK YOU! u 2 0 1 3 S u m m e r B u r g e e /// 9 Society of Mackinac New “Old Goats” inducted this year through the 2012 Bayview Mackinac Race “The more I sail, the younger I feel” By: RAY ADAMS, Chairman of the Bayview Mackinac Old Goats Committee T he title of this article could be the motto for the Bayview Mackinac Old Goats. Sailors that have invested time and effort making their way to Mackinac Island share a passion that bonds them together in this legendary race. Each year, sailors complete their 25th Mackinac Race and are eligible to become Old Goats. If you are one of those people, you should contact Bayview Yacht Club (313-822-1853 or www.byc.com) to obtain a copy of the Old Goats application. It will need to be filled out and returned to BYC by September 1st to be inducted in that year’s class of new Old Goats. A cocktail reception is held before the Mackinac Awards Dinner for new Old Goats. Recognition of this accomplishment occurs at the Mackinac Awards Dinner on Saturday, September 21, 2013. There is also recognition of Double Old Goats for sailors who complete 25 Bayview Mackinac Races AND 25 Chicago Mackinac Races. If you fall into that category, please notify both CYC and BYC. There are a few very select sailors who have sailed in 50 Bayview Mackinac Races who are known as “Grand Rams.” Please alert Bayview if you complete this milestone this year. Becoming an Old Goat speaks volumes about your persistence, commitment and dedication to a sport that is more than just an activity. It is a way of life! The friends that you make in the sailing community are the people that you can share Mackinac stories with for a lifetime. We hope that you will make some new memories this year and be able to share them with Old Goats who are getting younger every year!u 10 /// 2 0 1 3 S u m m e r B u r g e e David Balcirak Rich Carlson James L. It is located in what was formerly Margaret’s Garden. Margaret’s Garden has moved to the interior of the lower level of the hotel and is now an open-air type flower shop where guests can watch the daily activity of the flower designers. Sadie’s will serve 24 flavors of Michigan based Hudsonville Ice Cream. The name Sadie’s is a tribute to the Scottish Terrier that belonged to the proprietors of Grand Hotel, Mr. and Mrs. R.D. Musser, and the joy she brought to their family. Sadie was born in Laingsburg, Michigan—home of the family’s Roundtown Kennel. The Mussers have shown terriers throughout their life together. Sadie was their top winning dog—the only dog to date to win the “Triple Crown,” the three largest shows in the country, Eukanuba’s National Championship in Long Beach, California, the National Dog Show in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and the Westminster Kennel Club Show in New York City. She was the number one all breeds dog in 2009 and a champion for the record books with 112 Best in Shows. Today Sadie has 2 2 /// 2 0 1 3 S u m m e r B u r g e e retired from the dog circuit and lives with her best friend and handler in California. This classic American ice cream parlor has been decorated by Grand Hotel’s interior designer, Carleton Varney. As you walk up Grand Hill this season, new black and white hounds tooth awnings with the Sadie’s logo can be seen. Newly built stone stairs and a ramp lead to the bright red door where inside you will find cafe tables with white marble tops accompanied by cafe chairs with twisted iron and settees along the perimeter. Outside you will find additional seating on custom twisted iron benches. Grand Hotel is proud to partner with Hudsonville Ice Cream to be the exclusive ice cream supplier both at Sadie’s and throughout the hotel, and in all five off-site restaurants. For 80 years, Hudsonville has been a Great Lakes brand with Michigan roots, creating a strong bond with Grand Hotel, a family owned and operated hotel for three generations, celebrating its 126th birthday this year. Grand Hotel and Hudsonville respect and appreciate the value of Michigan-made products and family owned businesses which makes this partnership so grand. In addition to traditional ice cream cones, Sadie’s will feature shakes, sundaes, a special Grand Sundae built to share and served in a dog bone shaped bowl. In addition you will find the famous Grand Pecan Ball and a new twist on an old favorite, a mini Grand Pecan Ball on a stick. We hope to see you at Sadie’s this season. u 2 0 1 3 S u m m e r B u r g e e /// 2 3 2 4 /// 2 0 1 3 S u m m e r B u r g e e 2 0 1 3 S u m m e r B u r g e e /// 2 5 2 6 /// 2 0 1 2 S u m m e r B u r g e e Yacht 2013 Showcase Entries as of June 20, 2013 2 0 1 3 S u m m e r B u r g e e /// 2 7 Yacht 2013 Showcase Absolute Adagio Advantage Sail #: USA 16826 Type: 1982 Peterson 37 (37’) Owner: Donald Hinckfoot/Art Mason Home Port: Macomb Twp., MI Yacht Club: North Star Sail Club Class: PHRF C Sail #: E 5 Type: 1970 Multihull (35’) Owner: Meade Gougeon Home Port: Bay City, MI Yacht Club: Bay City Yacht Club Class: Multihull Sail #: USA 35007 Type: 1987 Beneteau FC12 (40’) Owner: Dan Tosch Home Port: Boyne City, MI Yacht Club: Bayview Yacht Club Class: Cruising A Affirmed Against The Wind Albacore Sail #: USA 43940 Type: 1992 Tripp 36 (36’) Owner: Jason Geisz Home Port: Birmingham, MI Yacht Club: Crescent Sail Yacht Club Class: PHRF F Alida Sail #: USA 263 Type: 1968 Cal 36 (35’6) Owner: William Harmon Home Port: Detroit, MI Yacht Club: Detroit Yacht Club Class: PHRF H Sail #: USA 12352 Type: 1973 C&C 35 MK1 (35’) Owner: Robert Farr Home Port: Beverly Hills, MI Yacht Club: Bayview Yacht Club Class: CC 35 Alliance Sail #: USA 5362 Type: 1973 Islander (36’) Owner: Tom Day Home Port: Rochester Hills, MI Yacht Club: Albatross Yacht Club Class: PHRF H 2 8 /// 2 0 1 3 S u m m e r B u r g e e Sail #: USA 422 Type: 1946 S&S Pilot 33 (33’) Owner: Richard Marsh Home Port: Beverly Hills, MI Yacht Club: Crescent Sail Yacht Club Class: PHRF H Ambush Anemone Sail #: USA 30523 Type: 1981 Islander 40DP (39’6) Owner: Raymond Pierce Home Port: Sarnia, ONT Yacht Club: Bridgeview Yacht Club Class: PHRF G Sail #: USA 127 Type: 1981 Ontario 32 (32’) Owner: Douglas Lowe Home Port: Leonard, MI Yacht Club: Port Huron Yacht Club Class: Cruising C — 8 9 t h B ay v i e w / M a c k i n a c Ya c h t S h o w c a s e Ariel Sail #: USA 137 Type: 1990 Swan (36’) Owner: George Steinemann Home Port: Sandusky, OH Yacht Club: Sandusky Yacht Club Class: PHRF G Aristeia Ariel Sail #: USA 148 Type: 1981 Tartan (33’) Owner: Mark W. P ersonally, my first sailing experience took place before I was even born, with my mom hiking on a J24: kind of crazy right? But this article isn’t about me, it’s about the entire Smith family and this lifestyle we have all come to love. The history of our family sailing in the Mackinac Race is truly remarkable. My father, Wick Smith, had one thing in mind as my brother Andrew and I (Scott) were growing up: “How do I get my sons into sailing the Mackinac Race as quickly as possible?” Many people were approached in 2004 to charter a boat and finally Carl Bihlmeyer came through with Allure, a Catalina 36 that had never raced. This is where the story all begins. We got five Smiths on a boat, three generations including myself, my father, and my grandfather, Lee Smith, who sailed his 59th Mackinac Race in 2012. Over time we have had seven Smiths sailing on one boat to Mackinac and let me tell you it can get pretty hectic sometimes. The seven Smiths include my granddad Lee (aka Tops), his sons Wick and Randy, grandkids Lauren, Kathryn, Andrew, and me. We sailed Allure from 2004-2009, managing to get a 3rd place flag, two 2nd place flags, two 1st place flags, and 1st overall in cruising in 2007. However, my grandfather was getting older and we needed a bigger boat. This is when we approached Fred Bellamy about chartering Pogo. We sailed Pogo in 2010 and 2011, winning first in class in 2011. Little did I know that all these years we were chartering other boats, my dad was looking for a boat of our own, one we could use to continue this lifestyle we had all become accustomed to. In 2011 he found that boat, a Beneteau 42 from the East Coast that was in really rough shape. It took us months and many, many man hours to get that boat into sailing condition, but once again we prevailed as a team and got Mostly Harmless in the water just in the nick of time. That year we sailed with six Smiths; Wick, Randy, Andrew, Kathryn, Lee, and me, taking 3rd place in our first year in our brand new boat—one we could finally call our own. A boat that I hope will stay in our family as long as possible. u Mostly Harmless and the Seven Smiths By: Scott Smith 2 0 1 3 S u m m e r B u r g e e /// 5 7 A A cruise in the Caribbean sunshine “Bayview Time on the Water” Wonderful time had by all. From the moment we arrived in Fort Lauderdale to our return eight days later, it was a “Bayview time on the water.” A faction of the BYC crew began our voyage in typical BYC form before even stepping aboard, “one omelet and four Bloody Marys, please.” Yee Haw! We’re off to the races! > 2 0 1 3 S u m m e r B u r g e e /// 5 9 Adven a mid-winter southern 6 0 /// 2 0 1 3 S u m m e r B u r g e e With stops in Turks and Caicos, San Juan, St. Maarten and Holland America’s own Half Moon Island in the Bahamas, our days were spent in Caribbean sunshine and evenings enjoying each other’s company. For the sailor in us, plenty of time at sea to enjoy what we do, move the boat. For the vacationer in us, plenty of food, libation, laughs, shore excursions and time for that unread book. We considered having Gerome and Denise host a “Hummer Course” aboard to compliment Holland America’s other cuisine courses, but we figured “Hummers” mixed in with 2100 passengers once they ran out of ice cream, may give rise to mutiny. So we sought a safer yet still BYC tradition and settled for asking the Captain, a fine Dutch sailor, Captain Vincent Smit, if he would oblige us by hoisting our Burgee upon the ships mast. Go figure, he actually agreed to it. Settled in our berth at St. Maarten, we were met by a young navigation officer from New Zealand who escorted us to the upper deck, patiently posed for a few pics, climbed the ladder with burgee in hand to the mast, and smartly hoisted BYC up the mast. Cool. Our seamanlike duties complete, it was time to return to libation, shore excursions and laughs. Hard to imagine a better mid-winter’s respite than to hang with your BYC buddies cruising in the Caribbean. Try it, you’ll like it. u nture! our days were spent in Caribbean sunshine and evenings enjoying each other’s company. 2 0 1 3 S u m m e r B u r g e e /// 61 “...winning with your friends and family is what it’s all about.” C ommodore Dean Balcirak sailed his first Bayview Mackinac Race in 1964 aboard a Pearson Vanguard. That is a 33 foot boat that rates slightly faster than a Cal 25. You’d be hard pressed to find anyone today who would think that sailing from Port Huron to Mackinac Island on one was a good idea. Commodore Balcirak, however, thought it was a great idea. So enthralled by the experience was Dean that he chose to do it another 49 times, almost exclusively on boats he owned (all but one of which were named Sea Fever), and as a credit to his sanity, all on boats faster than that Pearson Vanguard. The next 49 years were sailed under CCA, IOR, IMS, IRC, and PHRF, and on boats ranging from a Pearson 30 to a C&C 61 and everything in between. In the meantime, he was teaching at Grosse Pointe North, Grosse Pointe South, and the Olympic Sailing School. Nothing was more important to Dean than sailing with his family, among whom he counted not just those he was related to, but the many who have spent their sailing lives on boats with him. Not only has he been able to sail with three generations of his own family, but two other families on the boat have featured two Over four decades of sailing Commodore Dean Balcirak 6 2 /// 2 0 1 3 S u m m e r B u r g e e Sea Fever is the first and only boat in the history of the Bayview Mackinac Race to perform a clean sweep, winning first in class, first overall, and first in the Yacht Club Challenge. generations on board, and more than a couple regular crew members who have been with him for more than three or four decades. No conversation about Dean is complete without also talking about his wife of 42 years, Barbette. The efforts of Sea Fever’s crews throughout the years have been fueled by Barb’s cooking and (over) provisioning, and those crews have strived to prove correct her theory that well-fed crews sail faster. The highlight of Dean’s Bayview Mackinac Races occurred in 2004 when he accomplished something that never happened before, and hasn’t happened since. Sea Fever performed a clean sweep, winning first in class, first overall, and first in the Yacht Club Challenge. Proudly, Sea Fever is the first and only boat in the history of the Bayview Mackinac Race to accomplish that feat. That this is the highlight of Dean’s Mackinac Races speaks volumes to not only his commitment to sailing and helping people learn to sail, but the importance that he places on doing it with people he cares about. “Anybody can win races with the rock stars,” as he’s been known to put it, “but winning with your friends and family is what it’s all about.” u 2 0 1 3 S u m m e r B u r g e e /// 6 3 Ladies’ Fas 6 4 /// 2 0 1 3 S u m m e r B u r g e e shion Show Annual Bayview Spring Event Photography by: Martin Chumiecki, Photoelement.com 2 0 1 3 S u m m e r B u r g e e /// 6 5 Fifty Shad 66 es of Spring 2 0 1 3 S u m m e r B u r g e e /// 67 6 8 /// 2 0 1 3 S u m m e r B u r g e e New Photography by: Martin Chumiecki, Photoelement.com Commodore Kent M. After three days of heavy winds, tough competition, and nonstop entertainment, sailors and volunteers were left exhausted but gratified about the weekend events. “We have never seen such beautiful awards and professional race management in all our years of racing. Simply put, it’s the best regatta I have ever attended,” stated Paul Nuechterlein, Cal 25 Racer. Bayview Yacht Club and its local club affiliates are extremely pleased with the positive outcome and support received for their international yacht racing event. “Without support from our sponsors and 150-plus volunteers, our capability would be limited. However, when your goal is to be the best One Design Regatta in the Great Lakes, you must plan and be prepared to step it up a few notches. We pursued the best One Design classes, sponsors, Race Committee, international judges, and entertainment that were committed and willing to attend. I’m happy everyone responded,” said Brad Kimmel, 2013 Race Chairman. Attendance for the BOD this year was just shy of 200 boats, including representation from twelve states, and three countries (US, Canada, and Brazil). “Next year’s goal is 250. We want all great lakes sailors, PHRF or One Design to experience a first class regatta comparable in its overall quality as our offshore event, the Bell’s Beer Bayview Mackinac Race,” commented Paul Hulsey, 2014 Race Chairman. Barbour Memorial Regatta Sunday, September 8, 2013 The University of Michigan Sailing Team is proud to announce the Commodore John S. Barbour Memorial Regatta. This event will be hosted out of Bayview Yacht Club in Detroit, MI on Sunday, September 8, 2013. During registration, boats are offered and encouraged to take a local junior sailor along for the ride. Commodore Barbour was a lifelong sailor and incredibly active member of Bayview Yacht Club since 1969. Mr. Barbour became commodore in 1989 and was responsi-ble for the creation of the NA40 class. Commodore Barbour raced competitively on his NA40’s, and was adamant about keeping the fleet active, owning up to three boats at one point. Some of his greatest accomplishments include winning overall division title in the 1993 Port Huron-Mackinac Race on Velero VI, and finishing first overall in the racing division of the 100th anniversary Chicago-to-Mackinac Race on Velero VII in 2008. Commodore Barbour’s passion for sailing and sharing it with others encouraged the Michigan Sailing Team to create an event in his honor. As a club sport at the University, the team is student –funded –governed and –managed. The team is currently working toward a Capital Campaign goal of $100,000 to purchase a new fleet of boats to maintain their competitiveness. Creating and running a big boat regatta at a local yacht club has been a goal for a few years, and this year finally became a reality. The team participates in several large scale fundraisers a year, however the profits from our Strictly Sail Chicago Booth and Annual Banquet go directly to team operations. The team hopes that the Commodore Barbour Memorial Regatta will help the team to establish a sustainable fundraiser for our capital campaign. Additional goals of the event include developing better ties to the Detroit Sailing Community as well as allowing junior sailors the opportunity to participate in keelboat racing. Junior sailors throughout the DRYA are allowed to participate and boat owners are encouraged to take a few junior sailors along to expose them to racing in bigger boats. The regatta is open to boats with a valid PHRF rating. The event will consist of a one-day, 3-4 hour distance race on Lake St. Clair. We are offering an early bird registration special of $25/ boat. Registration will be through Yacht Scoring, and is opening soon. Please email our long-term Fundraising Chair, Ansley Semack at asemack@umich.edu or our Race Chair, Will Cyr at willcyr@umich.edu if you have any questions. 76 /// 2 0 1 3 S u m m e r B u r g e e 2 0 1 3 S u m m e r B u r g e e /// 7 7 Race Puzzles How well do you know the island?
