business investment. As consumer
spending and business investment
dried up, massive job loss followed.
In 2008 and 2009, the U.S. labor
market lost 8.4 million jobs, or 6.1%
of all payroll employment.
According to
stateofamericaworking.org, this was
the most dramatic employment
contraction (by far) of any recession
since the Great Depression. By
comparison, in the deep recession that
began in 1981, job loss was 3.1%, or
only about half as severe.

Summit Hill is a development with the
original plans dated January of 2005.
There is a golden shovel located in the
EDC office that was used for the
groundbreaking on January 18,
2007. Timing turned out the be the
worst enemy for the development as
the Great Recession and housing
crisis began in December of 2007.
The crisis began with the bursting of
an 8 trillion dollar housing bubble.
The resulting loss of wealth led to
sharp cutbacks in consumer
spending. The loss of consumption,
combined with the financial market
chaos triggered by the bursting of the
bubble, also led to a collapse in

timing, Howe combined with Van

that was to come in 2007-08. But the
growth never happened and Howe
was strapped with a massive water
contract without the ability to spread
out the cost to those new homes.

Peaster upsets Howe in one-game
playoff; freak play kills comeback

A one game series never plays in
the favor of the better team. A
coin-toss played much in the Lady
Bulldogs now sitting at home
while Peaster lives to play another
day. However, the Lady Bulldogs
bare a little responsibility,
themselves. But perhaps, the game
will always be remembered for the
freak play in the top of the fourth
that completely changed the
momentum and perhaps the game.
Howe trailing, 3-0 with the bases
loaded, two outs and Torrey
Stubblefield at the plate, saw her
rip a line drive towards the left
centerfield gap that was going to
score one, if not two runs.
However, the ball was hit right at
Kayla Anderson who was leading
off second base. Anderson froze
and the ball glanced off of her
batting helmet which caused her to
be out. That ended the inning,
momentum and virtually the
season. It was a freak play that
one will probably never see again.
Madisyn Hargrove would then pop
up to second for the third and final
out in the first.
Stubblefield, who has been battling
injuries for most of the season was
in the circle for only the second
time this year. The dominating
hard-throwing sophomore was on
her game early by allowing only
one runner on base in the first (on
an error).

to go to second on the bad throw.
But that was the only threat as
Ross flied to center, Maddie

The Lady Bulldogs finished as area
champions, just shy of last year's
finish. But the bright news is that
everyone is coming back except
for one player - senior London
Loftice.

Belfour currently lives on a ranch
in Whitewright, but said he plans to
move to Little Elm to be closer to
the business. A couple of years
ago, he and his father first came up
with the idea one night while
sipping whiskey together and
realized that they could start a
business and hang out drinking
together. Since then, they have
been researching the process of
owning and operating the unique
business.

Walker and Belfour discussed the
downtown location being close to
the First Baptist Church and that
could have weighed the decision to
not be in Howe.
"Dayn Belfour is a sincere and
pleasant individual who really
wanted to make sure the business
was in a place that wouldn't be
disruptive to the community." said
Walker.

possibility." said Walker. "About a
week later, we were locating
property and trying to find the ideal
location for his business."
They had discussed the vacant
property that sits between Abby's
Restaurant and City Hall. Belfour
said the property was ideal and that
their discussions included
reconstructing a two-story historiclooking building similar to the one
that stood in its place several years
ago.
“We want to make it

Belfour told the Little Elm Journal
about his new location. “It’s going

helmet." said Banker. "We had a
shot. We put the ball in play and
had baserunners on, but it just wasn't
our time. Most people would think
that the game would be over at that
point, but this team has been
resilient all year long. We have
come back all year long. It was just
not meant to be today."
When Banker was asked about the
one-game playoff, he said, "It's not
what I wanted. You've got to give
them (Peaster) their due. They made
the plays and got the hits when they
needed to and we just did not."
Banker said that Stubblefield came
back and gave the team everything
she had from the injury situation.
"Her hips, her legs, her back - just
about everything is hurting with that
child."

Recapping the season, Banker said,
"When you lose your leadoff hitter
in Blackburn the second half of the
season and lose Torrey for the
second half of the season to still
play as well as we did and 27-4-1 is
not a bad year. I'm happy with them
and I'm proud of them."
The only senior, Loftice said her last
game was emotional. "Sometimes
you have your bad days and I guess
this was just a bad day. We wanted
a series, but it's not what they
wanted. They won the flip."
This team will be mega-good in
2017.

thirsty I cannot focus very well
because all I’m thinking about is
food and water. Likewise if you
do not spend time in the word of
God you are dying of spiritual
starvation and dehydration. You
can only have an intimate
relationship with the Lord if you
live daily in His Word. When
you neglect His Word you are
undermining your relationship
with the source of spiritual life.
It’s a form of pride to think you
can provide for yourself the
nourishment that He said only He
can provide. If you came to Jesus
for the miracle fish and bread that
everyone else was receiving but
then continued in your own
selfish way…then you didn’t
really give yourself to Him. That
was you wanting God to serve
you, not you wanting to serve
Him as King! If you chase Him
for who He is you will hunger no
more and serve Him as your daily
Provider. “Jesus replied, "I am
the bread of life. Whoever comes
to Me will never be hungry again.
Whoever believes in Me will
never be thirsty,” John 6:35. If
you ever have an up close and
personal encounter with the
presence of God you will never
be the same. There is no denying
His deity. You won’t want to
leave that experience…you will
crave time with Him. That’s
what makes a true believer spend
time in the Word of God each
day.
share does us no good unless we
utilize the benefits it offers. People
came to hear Jesus speak because of
the rumors of what He had done.
They followed Him to the sea
because they thought He could give
them the power to do
miracles…they were hoping for the
big prize. It’s not until you commit
to Him that you reap the benefit of
knowing Him. And still you do
your part and He will do His.
“This is the work of God, that you
believe in Him whom He sent,”
John 6:29. God sent Jesus to be
your everlasting Bread of Life. God
knows when He can work through
you, and He will. “Truly, truly, I say
to you, he who believes in Me, the
works that I do, he will do also; and
greater works than these he will do;
because I go to the Father,” John
14:12. The Holy Spirit can perform
miracles through your willingness.
You need to be spiritually nourished
and filled with the Bread of Life.
No miracle you will ever experience
can compare to the work of God in
your own life when you truly
believe in Jesus with your whole
heart. He will show you your
hidden agendas, hurts, hang-ups and
habits and ask you to lay them at the
cross so you can be a vessel he can
use. He changes the heart of a true
believer because out of your heart
comes all of your behavior, good
and evil. Believe in Jesus with all

your heart and seek Him for who He
is. Then the fruit of His spirit will
flow out of everything you do and
pride and selfishness dies. The
Gallup pole says 9 of 10 Americans
say they believe in God. God says if
you truly believe in Him you will
abide or stay in His Word. True
belief in God results in obedience to
His Word because of honor, respect,
love and a healthy fear of the
Almighty God of all creation. If you
see God that big it humbles you. “If
you love Me, you will keep My
commandments,” John 14:15.
That’s pretty straight up.
“Do you believe in the Son of
Man?” John 9:35. Do you love
Him? Jesus is the only way to the
Father. Believing there is a God will
not change you, and looking around
at 9 out of 10 people will confirm
that statistic. Knowing God for Who
He is will change your life forever;
He will give you eternal salvation,
give you strength for tomorrow and
permission to lay your burdens
down. It’s simple, “Jesus, I believe
You are who You say You are.
Forgive me of my sins and come
make Your home in my heart. I give
you the rest of my life to do Your
way through me.”
After Jesus fed five thousand people
with five loafs of bread and three
fish, many followed Him to the other
side of the sea. They were seeking
Him for what He did not to know
Him for who He was. Just to know
Him could have provided eternal life
but they just didn’t get His message.

Learn about antiques and collectibles
with Dr. Georgia Caraway
The best part of writing these
columns, other than doing the
research, is when I get emails from
readers. I received just such a
letter about my previous Blue
Willow column. The reader said,”
I have one of the dozens of legends
about the pattern, given to me by a
friend, and one that I have enjoyed
showing the grandchildren on my
own Blue Willow dishes:
“Three men going to Dover,
Weeping willow hanging over—
Two birds in the sky,
Little ship sailing by.
There’s the house;
Here’s the gate,
And that’s the way
You read the plate.”
Of course, that led me to want to
share another Blue Willow story
with you. The first time I taught
about Blue Willow in one of my
classes, I repeated the following
legend to the group.
“Two birds flying high
A little vessel sailing by
A bridge with two men or more
A weeping willow hanging o’er.
The king’s castle here it stands
The finest building in the land
An apple tree with apples on it
And here’s a fence to end my
sonnet.”
(Anonymous--1923
Cookbook)
Of course, this is not a sonnet, so
my English teacher friends don’t
need to contact me. I think the
anonymous poetry writer probably
was just trying to rhyme with “on
it.”
We have a few pieces of Blue
Willow at Howe Mercantile, so
come on in and examine the pieces
and the legend behind their
design. Who knows you may fall
in love with this beautiful china
and start a collection of your own.
On a personal note: I want to thank
the Howe Chamber of Commerce
for honoring Howe Mercantile as
the New Business of the Year.
Each day brings us joy to be a part
of the Howe community. It is so
important for local businessses to
be supported by local consumers.
We are not only an antique shop,
although we take great pride in the
variety of antique furniture and
decorative and collectible items
we offer, but we have wonderful
gift items for all ages. And we do
