The dry season is the best time to visit. Crowds are heaviest during July and August. Cuzco’s average high temperature ranges between 66oF and 70oF year-round; average lows range from 34o in June, July, and August to between 41o and 44o the rest of the year. Short showers are common in Cuzco, Sacred Valley, and Machu Picchu throughout the year. We recommend that you schedule two visits to Machu Picchu as the citadel is often surrounded by fog and you'll want a clear view to capture the perfect photo. Transportation & Geography: Cuzco is ½ hr ½ hr Pisac Market Vistadome Train Peru Hiram Bingham Train 1 hr 1½ hrs typically reached by air from Lima but you can also reach the city by train or bus from Puno. We recommend flying to Cuzco and heading straight to the Sacred Valley for a few nights to acclimate at a lower altitude. Once settled, off to iconic Machu Picchu, which can only be accessed from Aguas Calientes, the small village near the base of the ruins. Aguas Calientes can be reached by train from either Poroy Station (near Cuzco) or Ollanta Station (near Sacred Valley). Your visit can be organized as a day-trip from either location or give yourself the luxury of time by overnighting. Shuttle buses to the ruins from Aguas Calientes run frequently from 5:30 am to 5:30 pm and the Machu Picchu Ruins opens at 6:00 am. After Machu Picchu, spend a few nights exploring the Inca capital of Cuzco before continuing to Lake Titicaca, the Amazonas region, or back to Lima Luggage: Trains have a strict one carry-on bag policy. Pack an overnight bag and store your extra luggage in the Sacred Valley or Cuzco. Permits: Inca Trail permits sell out months ahead of time. Advance purchase is required for entrance to Machu Picchu with an additional permit in order to hike the formidable Wayna Picchu mountain.
