October Sampler of the Month
Aquilina Morales-1867 from
The Essamplaire
I fell in love with this sampler the moment I saw it.
Perhaps it’s all of the red! It also features lovely
alphabets and exquisitely beautiful bands.
Margriet of The Essamplaire provides the following
information: Aquilina's wonderful band sampler is of Spanish
origin, worked mainly in red and greens. The sampler appears
quite delicate due to the fact that some of the satin stitch bands
have spaces between the stitches. The original sampler is in a
private collection.
The sampler is worked using cross stitch, satin, four sided,
double running, herringbone and some marking cross.
This sampler is only available as a kit, and it has
just been released and our order is on its way from
Canada. I haven’t seen it yet, but I know that it comes
kitted with 40c linen + Au Ver A Soie’s Soie d’Alger silk
in 5 colors. If you prefer a different linen count, we
will substitute the linen and adjust your kit price
accordingly.
During October receive a 15% Sampler of the
Month discount on your purchase of the kit ($96).

On the following several pages are some of the Essamplaire kits that we currently have in stock. During October, with our Sampler of the Month focus
on Essamplaire, please enjoy a 15% discount on these kits as well (discount is limited to stock on hand). The extensive historical and genealogical
information included makes them more interesting to me as I stitch and/or collect these, and several are on my I-must-stitch-this-before-I-die list.
TC 1691 Dutch ~ A fabulous sampler from the island of
Terschelling of the north coast of the Netherlands. There are at
least three other similar samplers. They all feature the
wonderful bands with cut work, the five wise and foolish virgins
of which five carry an oil lamp that’s lit and five don’t, along
with Christ with a halo above his head. There are other Dutch
samplers with the five wise and foolish virgins but only the ones
from the island have Christ wearing a halo. This pattern is
based on the story from Matthew 25:1. Geometric motifs,
sewing cushions, crowned and pierced hearts and trees of life
are other common elements on these samplers. All the bands
are worked with coloured silk thread. Difficult to tell who the
original stitcher was, could have also been II and ID. The
original sampler is in the Museum fur Kunst und gewerbe.
1911-220.
Stitches used are satin, eyelets, algerian eye, double
running, cross stitch, cut work, dove’s eyes, whip stitch and
pulled work. Kitted with Au Ver A’Soie’s Soie de Paris silk.
Worked on 45c linen, it measures 21” x 20”; on 40c, it’s 26.5” x
24”.
We have both the 40c & 45c kits available ($360).
(Right) Anne Maria Clarke - 182? ~ Anne Maria Clarke stitched her
sampler at the age of twelve, and she commemorated Marquis de Lafayette's
visit to Richmond, Virginia in October of 1824. Anne was probably the
daughter of Archibald and Maria Mauzey Clarke, and it's recorded that
they married on October 21, 1807, in Henrico County, VA, which is next
door to Richmond. During the first half of the 1840's Anne married George
Knox Crutchfield and was his second wife. He was a sign and house painter
by trade in Henrico County.
They had three children, one of whom died at the age of three.
Unfortunately Anne died in 1851 at the age of 39 and is buried at the
Shockoe Hill Cemetery in Richmond. This information is in "The Neatest
manner: The Making of the Virginia Sampler Tradition" by Kimberly
Smith Ivey. The sampler is in the Valentine Museum in Richmond, V.
84.122a. Stitches used are cross, cross over one and queen stitch. 18" x
17.5" on 35c linen. ($204)

Cynthia Burr - 1770 Cynthia Burr was one of Mary Balch’s students. The
central building is the State House, which is found on a number of other
samplers worked under Mary's tutelage; it's either the State House in Newport or
Providence. The building in the top border is the College Edifice, the first
building of Rhode Island College and now known as Brown University and still
standing.
Cynthia (May 21, 1770 - June 19, 1848) was one of seven children of Levi
Burr and his wife Mary Olney. Levi was a tailor in Providence. She married
Andrew Boyd on Sept. 17, 1795 and they had one son, Andrew Boyd, born in
1798. Information from Let Virtue be a Guide to Thee by Betty Ring.
The sampler is worked in cross, tent, queen, split stitch, and eyelet. Included
is a pattern that to be traced onto the linen. 12"x 15" on 35c linen ($196)
Christina Arcularius - 1792 Christina's sampler belongs to an important group of Biblical samplers made in New York. All contain Biblical scenes
and are worked within a deeply arcaded border. The entire ground is covered, mainly in cross stitch. A number of them have inner and outer borders
worked in queen stitch. Christina's sampler has her queen stitched areas worked a bit differently. The trees that the men are climbing in are typical of trees
found on Dutch samplers and some of the samplers have furniture motifs on them which are found on Dutch samplers.
The Huguenots who fled France first settled in the Netherlands and then immigrated to New York. It's believed that these samplers originated in
French boarding schools for girls first established in New Rochelle. The Prominent Dutch and English families sent their daughters to these schools. French
women were keeping schools in New York, and it's likely that at least one of them had attended a school in New Rochelle. The style of these samplers lasted
about twenty two years.
Christina was the daughter of a german baker, Philip Jacob Arcularius and Elizabeth Grimm. Philip was born in Marburg, Germany, around 1748,
Philip Jacob Arcularius immigrated to New York prior to the Revolution and engaged in the baking business with his brothers. According to family legend,
Arcularius volunteered to supply the city’s soldiers with bread during the Revolutionary War. By the 1790s he had left the baker’s trade to become a tanner
and evidently prospered as a master artisan. Philip married Elizabeth Grim in New York City’s Lutheran Church in 1775, and the couple settled into a
home on Frankfort Street. There they became parents to eleven children, seven of whom survived to adulthood. Christina, the eldest, was born in 1777. In
1799 she married Samuel Barker Harper and they had eight children.
For more information on these samplers refer to Girlhood Embroidery by Betty Ring. Above info. is from http://www.common-place.org/vol-04/
no-04/lessons/from The original sampler is in the collection of The New York Historical Society 54436. The sampler is worked in cross stitch, queen,
cross over one. 10.5" x 14" on 35c linen ($180 with silk)

Hannah Stacy - 1789 Hannah's sampler belongs to a
group of samplers made in Marblehead, Massachusetts.
There are a number of these samplers with similar trees,
birds, stags and ladies with crowns of flowers in their hair.
The border on Hannah's sampler is one of the more
elaborate ones. The Marblehead samplers are now attributed
to schoolmistress Martha Tarr Barber (1734/35–1812),
although few specific facts about her teaching have been
found. She evidently commenced keeping school after having
become a widow for the second time, in 1780. Eventually the
Barber school spanned the entire Federal period, for
Martha’s youngest daughter, Miriam, born in 1775, became
her mother’s assistant and continued teaching until her death
in 1830( information from American Folk Art Museum).
Hannah's sampler is from Hagley Museum. The
sampler collection at Hagley Museum and Library
(Wilmington, DE) consists of more than thirty samplers
which date from 1789 to 1857. Schools represented include
Mary Balch School, Westtown School, Pleasant Hill
Boarding School and Roseville School. The girls that made
these samplers lived in the Philadelphia/Delaware Valley
and North East areas. Most of the collection belonged to
Mrs. Louise du Pont Crowninshield (1877-1958).
The sampler is worked with cross stitch, cross over one
thread of linen, satin, chain and stem stitch. A diagram to
trace is provided. 9.75" x 10" on 35c linen ($159).
Mary Benezet Wood - 1817 Born November 26, 1810, Mary Benezet Wood was
the daughter of Joseph and Margaret (Ritter) Wood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She
married a merchant from Delaware, John Ross, and they had three daughters: Mary
Benezet, Josephine and Margaret Augusta.
Her maternal grandmother and namesake, Mary Benezet (1755-1808), was the
daughter of Anthony Benezet (1713-1784), the renowned Quaker convert who was a
leader in the Abolitionist movement in England and America. In 1772, Mary's portrait
was painted by Charles Willson Peale, considered the finest portrait painter of the
revolutionary era in America. This portrait is currently in the collection of the
Philadelphia Museum of Art. The following year Mary married Joseph Wood, an
attorney from Georgia, and they became the parents of one son and three daughters.
After the early death of Joseph Wood, Mary married Rev. Joseph Pilmore, a highly
respected Protestant minister who played an important role as stepfather to the
children.
Much is known and published about Anthony Benezet's life, but of particular
interest is that he established an evening school in his home to teach African Americans
and in 1754 opened the first public school for girls in Philadelphia. Anthony's young
brother Daniel, our samplermaker's great grandfather, was a Quaker as well, and a
distinguished merchant and supporter of many civic causes.
The sampler uses cross, cross over one, queen, satin and chain stitch and some
crinkle silk. (Courtesy of Antique Samplers.org) 12.5” 14.75” on 40c linen. ($160)

Martha Edlin - 1668
Martha Edlin's work is rather
well known, and she was a
accomplished stitcher. Besides
her band sampler she stitched
a cutwork sampler dated 1669,
small needlework items which
include two pincushions, a
bird, a needle case and several
other items. She also worked a
beadwork box dated 1673 and
a fabulous casket dated 1671.
All of her needlework is
housed at the V&A.
Stitches used double
running, satin, marking cross,
long armed cross,
montenegrin, running stitch,
eyelets and detached
buttonhole. It is mainly
worked with Soie de Paris, a
filament silk.
The original sampler was
worked over three threads of
linen, as were most 17th.
century samplers and
measures 8.25" x 32.25" An
option is to work it on 35c
count linen over two threads,
in which case it will measure
8" x 30" but the Algerian eye
alphabet at the bottom will
have to be adapted and some
of the running stitches. (Chart
$47)
Abigail Pinniger - 1780 Abigail's sampler belongs to the earlier
group of samplers made in Newport, Rhode Island. The large floral
band is found on a number of other samplers from this time period.
Abigail was the daughter of William Pinniger and Abigail Moon. She
was born in 1715. Abigail married Joseph Thurston at Trinity Church
in Newport on April 8, 1733. They had nine children. She died in
1779. (information from Girlhood Embroidery by Betty Ring).
The sampler is worked almost entirely in marking cross with
some cross over one thread, double running and satin stitches. The
original is at the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design. It
was unfinished and there was empty space below the large band so it
was adjusted to finish there. 10 1/2" x 14 1/2" on 40c linen. ($153)

Saturday: Florine’s Fan-Fare Madam Florine, a French noblewoman, has
commissioned the students of the Mansarde Aiguille Academy (Attic Needle
Academy) to create the absolute portmanteau (reticule) to hold-safe an
exquisitely handcrafted Scrimshaw Palm-vane. Her instructions...wishes were:
The Portmanteau must be furbished with the best of silk fabrics. It must look
and feel beyond compare. It must fit her petite gloved hand. It must be worked
in only silken filaments and silk fragments. It can only use superb hand- colored
ribbons and trimmings. The colors must reflect femininity. Only then can and
must the worker present her work and name on this piece de resistance. After
critically reviewing all the work, Madam Florine was so impressed that she
granted the Academy the permission to recreate her Portmanteau Fan-Fare.
Sessions begin Saturday morning ~ see you in class as you work on recreating your ultimate reticule and Scrimshaw palm-vane. All supplies needed for stitching and finishing, including silk fiber and silk
hand-dyed fibers, silk taffeta check, silk ribbon, 34-count Legacy linen, detailed

Sunday: Queen M’s Pomander & Privy Purse A pomander, from the French pomme d’ambre
is a ball made of perfume. The Queen M’s pomander is two-sided opening, oval-global stitched
shapes that connect and hold a silk drawstring pouch for storage of herb fragments. The two
exterior oval global shapes are adorned and covered with stitched pomegranates and foliage using
vibrant rich tones of reds and pinks. Your treasured pomander stows in a privy purse constructed
using covered Hedebo/Dorset button rings. Jackie’s inspiration for this pomander’s privy purse is pulled from a purse she purchased in
Spokane, Washington while teaching there many years ago. The original is stitched in black; yours
will we worked to match the jewel tones of the pomander. The privy purse will be lined and
decorated with beads and ribbons and silk fabric. The work tray seen as a work in progress will be an optional item available to students only.
Complete kit includes all supplies needed for stitching and finishing: silk fiber and silk handdyed fibers, silk taffeta check, silk ribbon, 34-count Legacy linen and 32-count linen, detailed
instructions with color charts and color finishing photos. Monday: September Morning A September morning finds you
walking down a fashionable avenue in Paris, looking for a very special
object that you can take home with you. Tucked away in the display
window's corner, you eyes are drawn to a delicate carton. The carton
is decorated with soft watercolor styled flowers, leaves and vines.
You step inside the shop for a closer look. Excitement fills the air
as you recognize the carton to be a needlework box. The shop
attendant sees your interest and takes the needlework box to a
viewing area. The shop becomes silent. Your eyes follow the shape of
the box. It's a rectangular about 6" x 3" x 1 3/4"h. The slanted sides
are decorated with tiny silk stitches that resemble watercolor paints on
a warm antique-colored linen. The four box sides are attached to one
another and meet with panels at the top creating a functional box top
that ties with a wonderful vintage-looking silk ribbon. The ribbon is
untied and you notice that each of the four box sides are attached to
these linen panels to create the top of the box. With the ribbon
untied and the box top panels folded back, you view the silk-lined
interior. It is filled with tiny trinkets and tools. A thimble hides in one
corner, buttons and bows adorn a tufted mattress pincushion, and you
see a tiny needlebook with scissor minder. The box's silken
interior has silk pockets, and each is filled with tiny treasures, paper,
mementos and needle necessities. Holding your purchase, you walk to your hotel room, thinking of the needlework person who owned
this treasure before you and about the treasures you are planning to add to this beautiful September
Morning memory. Join Jackie in class as we celebrate our September Morning.
September Morning is worked on 32-count linen with hand-dyed and solid silk fibers. The interior
silk fabric provided in your kit is a luxurious taffeta linen. The vintage looking silk ribbon will be specially
dyed for this project. Color graphs and diagrams with colored instructions will be provided in class.

present a beautiful sampler, “Out on a Limb,” that was designed based on a Fraktur in Vickie’s father’s collection.
Then Nancy will guide us through our Fraktur project, “Birds in Tree,” a very common Fraktur image, one that most people recognize, using
Nancy’s own design, on a paper-mâché box. As an added bonus, Nancy and Vickie collaborated to convert her art into a chart that can be placed inside
the box top, then finished to mount inside the lid or as a pincushion (the pincushion materials aren’t included in your box kit.) Your finished box will be
the perfect place to house your matching necklace. Nancy has many Fraktur/Folk Art related gift items that she will offer for sale in a small boutique at the
hotel following the class. To view some of Nancy’s work, visit her Etsy shop, Five Times Blessed.

Mary Sophia’s Pennsylvania German Sewing Set
Mary Sophia’s . . . is inspired by the beautiful quilts and
traditional needlework motifs used by the Pennsylvania
Germans. The set is designed to be housed in an optional
miniature blanket chest* and consists of a quilt/thread
holder, a set of 3 stacking biscornus, ruler, scissors sheath,
and working needlebook. The working needlebook
contains a mattress-style pincushion, scissors pocket for
petite scissors, and linen needle pages. Specialty stitches
used are Petite Stitch (over one), Tent Stitch, Closed
Herringbone, Smyrna Cross, Nun Stitch, and Back
Stitch.
Kit Contents:
Chart with instructions and stitch
diagrams, size 26 & 28 tapestry needles, piece of 32count linen to practice stitches with DMC thread, 5 full
skeins of 12-strand Belle Soie overdyed silk thread, and a
fat half of 36- or 40-count Lakeside Vintage Maritime
White linen.
Finishing Kit Contents:
Instructions, diagrams, and
materials to finish each piece (Skirtex, cotton batting,
perle cotton for cording, mother-of-pearl thread rings,
and lining fabric.
* This optional Miniature Blanket Chest is custom made by Don
DuBois of The Barn Workshop. Don is an outstanding artist in
being able to give a contemporary piece the look of an aged and
distressed antique. Since each chest ordered will be a custom
piece, you will have the option of choosing your own color (Olde
Century colors) and amount of distressing. There is a lift-out tray
in each chest which will accommodate the insert design indicating
your name, date, and place of residence. Check Don’s Etsy
website here: The Barn Workshop. Price: $150.00 + S&H
* Here’s what Don tells us about this piece: This is our Trenton Miniature Blanket Chest that can be used as a stitching or
sewing box. I am sure there can be many other uses for this fine early American piece because of the large storage underneath the
removable till/tray. This chest is actually a reproduction from a picture that I received from a fellow artisan who is a Master
Teacher and designer of needlework. I have been wanting to build a nice small blanket chest and am very happy to have been given
this opportunity. This is a very striking and impressive small piece of furniture that has a variety of utilitarian value.
* Color: Model done in Cranberry Red over Lamp Black, nicely distressed primitive. The blanket chest can be
done in any combination of colors (Olde Century Colors) and degree of distressing. * Dimensions: outside at lid(top) H- 9 3/4'' W- 14'' D- 8 1/4'' This is an all-day class with Theresa Baird, an optional class, i.e., not included in the Symposium Weekend. Registration for this class will be accepted
by email only. We will be happy to answer your questions by phone, but registrations will only be accepted by email. Receipt of your email registration
will be acknowledged by email, and you will be notified by email of the status of your registration and asked to phone our toll-free number with
payment information. In addition to your kit, the workshop fee includes breakfast, lunch, and a mid-morning break. Workshop fee, $315.
Because an email address is needed for each of you to provide additional information along the way, we are looking to email registration as the
best method for the entire process. A nonrefundable deposit of $50 completes your reservation.

Mary Hammand 1732 ~ Here’s what Marsha says about this stunning
reproduction:
In the early eighteenth century samplers began to evolve from long vertical bands into more
rectangular shapes. They began to incorporate more pictorial and scenic images and scenes
such as those found on seventeenth century canvas and stumpwork pictures. Alphabets,
numerals and verses prevailed but the sampler evolved both as an exercise in needlework
technique as well as a vehicle for creative artistic expression. Common themes were scenes
based on biblical stories, but the popularity of bucolic, pastoral scenes increased. Mary
Hammand's sampler/canvas work piece melds these themes with a traditional sampler at
the center surrounded by pastoral images on either side of it.
It's interesting to note that she spelled the surname of her parents "Hamond" and
her surname "Hammand"---perhaps attributable to her lack of delight in learning?
Stitches used in the sampler include cross stitch over one and two threads of linen,
counted satin, back and eyelet.
A special kit discount of 10% is available if you purchase all of the kit parts,
chart ($42) + linen (price varies depending on count) + AVAS silks ($184.90)
The original, housed in the Wisconsin
Historical Society, I was thrilled to see
in person on a visit there in July 2012.
I took photos of the beautiful
silks in sections, to try to
capture the beauty of this
exquisite embroidery silk.
Here’s the Wisconsin Historical Society’s online description:
Dark linen ground; completely cross-stitched in silk threads of green, blue, red, white,
brown, and yellow; alphabet at top; pictoral border of greens, reds and tans: a girl with a
sheep at her feet in the lower right corner, a boy with a dog at his feet in the lower left corner,
trees and birds up the sides, solid floral border at top and bottom; some eyelet stitches;
inscriptions: "Gods Love and goodness/ has been shown in sending fro/m his blessed throne
his/ blessed only son to die that w/e the race might run. *MH*/The days of our years are
threescore years and/ ten and if by reason of strength they be foursco/re years yet is their
strength labour and sorrow/ for it is soon cut off and we fly away. Psalm/ the XC verse
the 10./Delight in learning soon will b/ring a child to learn the hard/est thing./Mary
Hammand Her S/amplar [sic] Aged 11 years November t/he 19th 1732."
Object History
The completely stitched ground indicates the sampler was made in England.

As we continue with our SAL, we are ready to embroider the beautiful floral Band
32, following Joanne’s detailed diagrams and instructions. Time permitting, move
on to Bands 33 - 37. I trust that you are enjoying embroidering this stunning
reproduction from Joanne Harvey.
The sampler reproduction kit includes 32c linen and 25 hues of DMC floss.
Full directions and illustrations are given for the different embroidery
techniques as found on the original sampler, and those include Cross Stitch
and its many variations, Queen Stitch, Algerian Eye, and accents of Double
Running. If you’ve never embroidered an Examplarery reproduction before,
you will find the pages and pages of stitch diagrams and charting almost as
helpful as having Joanne there instructing you personally. Kit $79
The elegant band format found on the sampler
embroidered by Ann Almy has just been
reproduced and taught at the recent Winterthur
Museum Symposium by Joanne Harvey/The
Examplarer y. From Colonial Williamsburg
Foundation’s textile collection and documented in
Bolton & Coe’s American Samplers, this sampler was
wrought in the “English style” and belongs to the
earliest group of Newport, Rhode Island
samplers worked between the 1720’s through the
late 1760’s. The bold central floral motif,
decorative bands, numerals, dividing bands, and
verses are repeated on other examples found
during this time frame. This important early
design was worked under a still unidentified
instructress.
Ann Almy was the daughter of William
Almy and Elizabeth Cranston born in 1722. She
married Walter Chaloner in Trinity Church on
July 28, 1743. He was commander of Fort
George and then High Sheriff of the British
Colony of Rhode Island. The Chaloners were
loyalists to the English crown and evacuated to
Nova Scotia, Canada as refugees of the American
Revolution. From there they moved to St. Johns,
New Brunswick, where he became Justice of the
Peace. Together they were parents of ten
children. Ann passed away in 1808 in Canada
and is buried in St. Johns.
Joanne is continuing her research on the
Chaloners, so stay tuned for more interesting
historical information! It promises to be very
intriguing!

Terry’s stunning, exquisite embroidery, her framed “Eleanor Parr” from
Marsha/The Scarlet Letter! What an heirloom! She stitched it with The Attic’s
choices for both the 40c Lakeside linen and Gloriana’s beautiful overdyed silks.
Thank you for sharing this inspiring finish with our customers, Terry.

Epilogue

Images that help me recall wonderful memories of too short a time spent in one
of my favorite places, Colonial Williamsburg, with brother Jer and his wife Nancy.
Nancy & Jerry posing with
George Washington’s portrait.
While we didn’t plan it, we were there for
US Constitution Day on September 17! Lots
of festivities, including a very special concert!

As Grandma Vickie said on her FB page, “Zoe is a big sister! James Ray just arrived!
Healthy 8 lb 9 oz, 21" sweet brother.” And for those of you who have asked, “Who is Zoe?”
her mother, Maegan, worked at The Attic before Zoe, and many of our customers came to
know and love her, and so we share photos of Maegan’s family for her “Attic family.”
