Email: admin@nwtdc.net NWT Disabilities Council YK Grand Prix @NWTDC These past few months have been incredibly busy on every level at the Council. We had the Grand Opening for our new office, our Annual Benefit Auction and began to look ahead and plan for next year’s event. The support for our relocation has been incredible. We have seen more foot traffic and feel connected once more. The Safe Harbour Day Centre, which provides shelter and supports for people experiencing homelessness and its related issues, has been operating for two months now and as the temperatures have dropped the number of people seeking shelter from the streets and cold increase. We have provided public health services, held a flu clinic, information and referral services, employment readiness, food, some clothing and personal hygiene supplies, comfort and a warm safe place to rest. Renovations to add another washroom and a small kitchenette will add to our ability to provide service. Many of the individuals have common complex issues such as; mental health challenges, physical health challenges and addictions. Either alone or in combination these can be disabling. The one thing that is apparent, after working with these individuals for a while, is that each journey is scarred with personal trauma most of which starts in childhood. As the space is completed we will begin to provide programs that help to develop self – esteem and lead to a more stable place for individuals. We have had a warm response from the community and have people stop by with baked goods, donations of clothing and personal hygiene items and outerwear. We are always happy to receive donated items at either the Day Centre or our main office. Our programs have undergone many revisions over the last few years to ensure they are current and viable. We have seen as much as a 100% increase in requests for some of our programs from Learning Supports for Persons with Disabilities to respite and early childhood intervention. We continue to advocate for more services and work in partnership with all level of governments to achieve more inclusive and integrated communities. We are excited as we move into the New Year and the focus on collaborative and integrated supports in addressing the concerns and needs of people living with disability in the North. Denise McKee Executive Director Winter Holiday Closing Our office will be closed from December 22nd, to January 2nd inclusive. We will be reopening Monday January 5th at 8:30. All of us at the NWT Disabilities Council would like to wish you a safe and Happy Holidays, and a wonderful New Year! Learning Supports for Persons with Disabilities Program This year, the Learning Supports for Persons with Disabilities fund had too many applicants to support. The response to this from our funder, Education Culture and Employment, has been to nearly double our available funds and see that all those applicants were supported in their education goals! Information Referral and Support Program This year, IRS has had the honor of assisting people with applications for various services including YATS, Canada Pension Plan Disability and housing issues. IRS has also been invited to participate in supporting clients in cooperation with other services like the Safe Harbour Day Centre, YKACL and the Salvation Army. Thanks to everyone who has helped to make this year a big success. Early Childhood Intervention Program The Early Intervention Worker is a position that provides 1:1 support to children 0-4 years with a disability. All of our workers have specialized up to date training on how to effectively work with these children. Currently, we are supporting 9 children in our program. All of them have specific goals that we are collaboratively working on with a team of professionals that are directly involved in their care. One of our main goals throughout the year is to have them develop the skills necessary to transition to kindergarten. This is so that they will leave our program with a plan in place to assist the teachers in helping them with successful integration into the classroom in the new year. 2014 Annual Benefit Auction Donors Respite Respite is the ability for a family to have a qualified worker come into the home and provide care for a child with a disability. The worker will also take the child out into the community to participate in community events that the child is interested in. The Disabilities Council supports 12 families in 3 different communities across the NWT. This program is growing at a fast pace with an increasing number of new interest and needs.
