Pyramid Hill College
Indonesian Language Assistant
Pyramid Hill College has been fortunate
enough to receive funding to employ an
Indonesian Language Assistant. We are
pleased to welcome Tiara Maharani, who
is our new Assistant and she will be
living in our community for the rest of
the year.
Tiara’s role at the College will be to
work with students and teachers to
provide expertise and correct language
usage and contribute to the Indonesian
language
program through
other
activities.
Tiara has written some
information about herself below.
My name is Tiara Cita Maharani, but people call me Tiara. I was born in
Ciamis, West Java on June 9, 1991. I live with my mother and my
brother in Majalengka, West Java. My mother is a teacher. She teaches
accounting in a vocational school. My brother is in college. He’s
studying Resort & Tourism Management in NHI, Bandung.
My hobbies are reading and dancing. I like reading detective novels or
everything. I like traditional dances, especially jaipongan. Besides, I also
like to cook.
I’m so happy to be an Indonesian Language Assistant to Pyramid Hill
College. The staff and students are so wonderful. Hopefully, I can be a
part of Pyramid Hill College and contribute to any events and celebrations.

Notes
(Members of the AIRR Buying Group)
60+ Lads
The lads, Alan, Allan, Andy and
Ernie, travelled to Boort this week
and let the chook off the hook in their
first game. However, they made a
good come back and joined the chook
hunt winning their other two games.
Here’s something to cheer you up,
guys…Q: Did you hear about the
chicken who could only lay eggs in
the winter? A: She was no spring
chicken.
Saturday Pennant
Division 1 played Cohuna Golf 2 and
were pipped at the post, going down
67-71. Sadly, it was one of those
matches we should have won!!
Unfortunately,
the
opposition
probably saw it differently. The
empire was building nicely until it
came crashing down in the final
stages of a nail-biting finish. Our
players should take heart, however, as
a four shot loss is more
‘disappointing’ than ‘disasterous’!
Lionel, Laurie., Jean & Andy had a
great team win 31-20.
Beau, Ian, Kate & Graham also
recorded a sound victory 24-17, with
Ian getting the accolades for the day.
Glen, Fred, Jeanette & Helen had a
battle all day, but found the going too
tough, losing 12-34.
Division 3 played Kerang and,
regrettably, were not able to produce
the form of the previous week. The
final score of 62-78 was a good effort
against very strong opposition, but
still a disappointing loss given that a
spot in the finals was beckoning.
Charlie, Neil, Alan J., Andrew lost 20
– 33
Nola, Terry, John & Peter lost 14- 29
Brian, Allan F., Ernie & Bill put in
their ever-consistent effort to win 2816. All reports declared that Brian
was on fire (a cut above the rest) and,
as Skip, played some amazing, wellcalculated wicks.

Working Bee: Thanks to those willing
workers who attended the Working Bee
last Friday when the front green was
given a haircut and manicure. Brian’s
knowledge and expertise in matters
relating to the green keeping is
invaluable. Brian, Andy, Allan F.,
Lionel, Bruce, Nola and Marie N. toiled
through the heat in an effort to improve
the playing surface and the surrounds.
I’m sure all who benefit from your
work will thank you. Thanks, also to
Ernie who has been repairing the seats
yet again. It’s a shame you weren’t
around to enjoy the feast that was
provided to the Working Bee crew,
Ernie.

Ern Ferris passed away on 27th
January 2015, a few weeks short of
his 92nd birthday. He was born in the
Pyramid Hill hospital and lived in
the area all of his life, from the
family farm at the Terricks to the
Pyramid town. He had, at various
times, worked as shearer, transport
operator, share farmer, cleaner,
groundsman, all to supplement the
income while operating the family
farm.
Ern met his wife Mavis when, as a
newly appointed school teacher to
Bald Rock, she attended a function
at the Pyramid Hall. They were
married in June 1947 and moved to
Mincha West. As the family of four
children arrived over the next eight
years they moved to Macorna,
Mincha and back to the family farm
in 1961.
Ern and Mavis semi-retired in the
late seventies, to a block on Bullock
Creek near the Hill then into their
house in Barber St around 1985.
He has been involved at management
level in many organisations over the
years, including Swimming Pool committee, Macorna and Pyramid football
clubs, Historical Society, the Lions
Club where he was awarded the Melvin
Jones Award, Lions International’s
highest award for dedicated humanitarian service, and more recently was
pleased to be on the committee of the
Neighbourhood House.
Through
knowledge gained from years in these
positions, he became the “go-to guy”
for advice on club administration,
council issues, and on life itself.
In earlier life, Ern had doubts about his
literacy but with assistance from Mavis
initially, he became a prolific author
and wrote a five volume set of memoirs
and assisted many other people with
producing publications recording local
history.
Ern is survived by sisters Dorothy and
Hazel, and sons Alan and Graeme.
Daughter Jenny passed away in 2004
and Neil in 2014.

The family wishes to extend sincere
thanks to the people of Pyramid and
district
for
supporting
Ern’s
involvement in community activities
and family and friends who drove
him to functions and doctor’s
appointments in later years.
In particular we thank the Cert Team
members Cheryl, Cathy and Tania
who in the words of one of them,
“gave it their best shot” in Ern’s time
of need.
If there was ever an
example of the value of the Mecaps
personal alarm system this was it.
*******
Ern was a member of the Committee
of Management and also a volunteer
and a friend, mentor and confidant to
many in the community and
especially to those who frequented
the Neighbourhood House. He will
be missed greatly by all who
benefited from his kindness and
words of wisdom.
The Committee of Management,
Staff and Volunteers of the Pyramid
Hill Neighbourhood House would
like to say thank you Ern for your
commitment to our House.
Ern was a founding member of the
Pyramid Hill Men’s Shed and
regularly spent time happily working
on projects, learning new skills and
generally being involved with the
other members of the Shed. We
greatly appreciated Ern’s generous
donation of the lathe and will miss
seeing him at his station at the scroll
saw. Members and friends will
remember Ern for his support and
generosity and he will be greatly
missed.

are reddish-brown coloured with yellow

The above are two images of the QFF
which is beginning to infiltrate our area.
If we decide as a community to tackle this
threat now, we may have a chance of
stopping it in its tracks.
Obviously, as orchardists, we are deeply
concerned about the spread of this threat,
but if you enjoy growing your own fruit
and vegies, you too should be concerned,
as the QFF has the ability to completely
destroy almost any fruit or vegetable crop.
If you would like to see if you have this
pest, or would like to destroy it, there are a
few simple rules.
Buy some traps from a hardware shop
and install around your fruit trees
or vegie garden. (QFF prefer to
infest fruit that is still hanging on
the tree so put the trap inside a
tree).
Collect all fruit and vegies that fall to
the ground, as they could be
infested and the pupae have a
chance to hatch if they can move
into the ground. Put all fruit that
isn’t used into a sealed plastic
bag and either freeze and then put
in the rubbish, or put the sealed
bag in the sun for a few days to
cook.

Lifecycle
There are four stages in the life cycle of
QFF: egg, larva (maggot), pupa and adult.
Completion of the QFF life cycle is
dependent on temperature and moisture.
Each stage may take from a week to
several weeks and under favourable
conditions one generation takes about
four weeks. (Last winter, the QFF
managed to breed throughout winter in
northern Victoria.)
Small eggs are laid just under the skin of
the fruit where they develop into maggots.
Decay begins inside the fruit while the
outside of the fruit may appear intact.
These maggots become larvae, which
when matures leave the fruit and burrow
into the soil beneath the tree. Each larva
forms a hard, brown barrel-like shell from
its skin, inside which the pupa develops
into a fly
Female QFF are capable of laying several
hundred eggs during their lifetime, and
adults can live for many weeks. Female
flies usually mate once or twice but male
flies mate multiple times. There have
been sterile males developed to be
released into the environment to try and
stop the epidemic.
