With the new Eno single lever mixer, presented successfully at the recent edition
of Living Kitchen and available on the market as of next July, Dornbracht continues
its Water Zones project. One particular feature of the taps is the notable reduction in energy
consumption thanks to a control lever which in the neutral lever position is poised
to supply cold rather than a mix of hot and cold water as is the case with traditional mixers.
Eno, by Sieger Design, presents a clear formal style comprising a cylindrical body
and an ergonomically-shaped with built-in retractable spray head.
The Water Zones programme, borrowed from professional kitchen design, defines
the separation of spaces according to the different processes involving water:
preparing, washing, cutting, draining, rinsing, cleaning and quenching thirst.
The new collection of sinks breaks down into over 20 individual and 8 dual solutions,
each of which offers the best interpretation of the various stages in working in the kitchen
(divided into four functions: preparing, cooking, cleaning and drinking), while the Universal
version is designed for kitchens of reduced size and combines the various functions.
Which is where the green credentials of this new mixer lie.

Lighting joins the ranks of trendy kitchen features
and indeed offers and opportunity to create “hybrid” objects
that bring together a range of different functions.
And a lot of the exciting new design developments are taking
place in kitchen hoods, with some quite remarkable
new models that double as lamps and indeed at first glance
might be mistaken for designer lamps, were it not for their
telescopic systems that reveal or conceal powerful extraction
motors and filters descending from on high to treat the fumes
produced in the stovetop area. Then there are other lighting
components: useful illumination points that provide practical
help for anyone preparing food on the worktop.
For this function there are now linear LED lamps, the new
frontier of efficient, low-cost lighting, designed for attachment
under the wall units. Similarly, various models of kitchen have
such lighting systems fitted inside the cabinetry, such as Trim,
from Dada, which features a fully illuminated work station
rather than a simple panel the wall and floor units.
Another example is Barrique, from Erenestomeda, whose
BRIGHT IDEAS
Skyled wall units are made entirely of smoked glass and fitted
with LEDs that diffuse light throughout the whole room.
LEDs are also being used for more “extreme” solutions,
such as the home greenhouses produced by Arclinea
and by Poggenpohl - for growing herbs indoors or softer options such as the light points that fit into
the backs of Scic’s kitchens, and, in the case of MK,
take the form of a strip running under the worktop or along
the plinth to create intriguing accents and moods.
Salvarani uses LED strips to highlight its new panelling
systems and introduces powerful light sources to backlight
panels and illuminate the entire space. Other functional
lighting under the wall units is seen in designs by Composit
and Veneta Cucine, while Matteo Thun enters the world
of kitchen design with an emotionally appealing design
that illuminates a worktop made from a slab of alabaster
which as a result seems to give off a special luminous
energy all of its own.

ECOCOMPATTA
Ecocompatta is the name
of this monobloc kitchen,
which fits in perfectly with the
concept of eco-sustainability.
From the design of the materials
used and the production process
to the installation of the finished
kitchen, the appliances
and all the packaging, everything
is designed to be “green”.
The other idea behind the project
is that of reduction: in terms of
form, size, models offered,
complexity of assembly,
plumbing and wiring and of cost.
When closed, the module is
a box-shaped unit slightly detached
from the wall and looks rather
like a large dresser, with a central
section screened off by a shutter.
Behind this is the work area
with monobloc top and sink,
induction hob, chopping board
and sliding draining rack, hood,
organised, rear-lit crockery draining
wall unit; the two side columns
contain the appliances.

A young person’s design, based

LIGNUM ET LAPIS
The exciting new feature of the visually striking
Lignum et Lapis furnishing solution, designed
by Antonio Citterio is its wooden slatwork finish.
From an architectural point of view, the model presents
two contrasting features: the storage function,
which draws attention to the innovative look
of the fronts, and the island workstation, described
as a piece of Industrial Sculpture, a self-supporting
island block with a central structural element
and two adjoining wings. The photo shows
the Carrara marble block; above is a ceiling-mounted
“multi-level” element made of steel,
with hood, shelf and home greenhouse.

Solid larch or Nordic oak in slats of different widths variously
spaced.

The island is made entirely of Carrara marble,
or is alternatively available in a stainless steel version,
with steel worktop and larchwood snack bar.

lighting, which creates the warm micro-climate

+ARTESIO
The +Artesio model fits into a global approach to the
living space, in which architecture, home and kitchen
blend into a co-ordinated three-dimensional whole.
At the heart of Hadi Teherani’s design is the idea
of the “kitchen within a kitchen”. “People like to live
and work in the kitchen at the same time,” explains
architect Teherani. “For this reason, with +Artesio,
we have created a private area inside the kitchen itself,
in which the functions of washing and cooking are
circumscribed, but only conceptually. The idea of a private
space is heightened by a luminous bridge-style
“canopy”, underneath which you really feel like you’re
in another space.
TRIM
The Trim model reinterprets traditional
kitchen furniture functions and components
in an elegant, understated design.
Designed by Dante Bonuccelli, Trim offers
differentiated functional elements with which
each design can be adapted to specific
requirements. The U-shaped composition shown
in the photo is designed to offer maximum
functionality for food preparation on the worktop.
The handy wall-panelling storage units illuminated
from the wall units ensure that cooking utensils
are always easy to access.

On the 240-cm wall units and the wall-panelling storage
units. The wall units with hideaway shutter fronts
are fitted with service lights that switch on automatically,
acid-etched shelves and built-in fume extraction system.
The wall-panelling storage units that come right down
to the worktop are fitted with their own service lights
and electrified technological bar, as well as
with acid-etched shelves and utensil rack accessories.
The wall-panelling storage units are 60, 90 or 120 cm
long and fitted with extra-bright acid-etched glass fronts
that slide back and hide away in side the top by means
of a vertical slide mechanism.

HIGHTEAK
Restrained design and high-quality materials are two main
features of the flagship model in the Salvarani collection:
Highteak, designed by Castiglia Associati. The elegance
of the model is seen particularly well in the styling
of the quality wood cabinet fronts; in the horizontal
continuity created by the perfect alignment of the large
base units and low wall units; in the purity of the fronts
with built-in handle on the upper edge of the fronts.
Among the new features that have freshened up the look
of the model, the new hood built into the wall unit,
the magnetic panels onto which the shelves are hooked
and the new plant-holder trays, a micro-system
for growing herbs and spices in the home.

LA CUCINA
It was a shared passion for wood in its most natural
form that brought together Maurizio Riva and Matteo Thun
who, working alongside different partners, created
La Cucina, a project with great emotional appeal presented
at the “Living Kitchen” 2011 fair in Cologne.
La Cucina, based around the theme of environmental
sustainability, is constructed using wood sourced
from AHEC (the American Hardwood Export Council,
the leading association for the field in the USA)
and hinges on three main areas: a hearth, an area
for food preparation and an area for food storage.
It is made using salvaged American red oak,
and the American black walnut used
for the previous installation designed by Matteo Thun
for Milan Design Capital 2010.

BALANCE
INNOLINE
For good kitchen worktop illumination, L&S presents
Balance, an LED luminous trim that fits under
the wall unit and features a special innovative
adjustable system. It takes up very little space
and offers two different sorts of lighting,
thanks to its “tilting fin” feature.
When the fin is in the closed position it produces
diffused “comfort” lighting; in the open position
the beam is focused accurately onto
the surface below.
Hettich’s Magic range includes integrated lighting solutions
for kitchen furniture and other home and contract
furnishing schemes. With its halogen, fluorescent and LED
systems, the Magic range offers functional or mood lighting
to satisfy the creative demands of interior designers,
who have a detailed catalogue of products to choose from.
One particularly interesting LED system in the Magic series
is InnoLine, designed to illuminate the insides of drawers
and bottoms of furniture units, which comes
on automatically when the drawers are opened.

Balance is a modular LED lighting system in four lengths:
45, 60, 90 and 120 cm. When the tilting fin is closed
it measures 3.2 cm in width; when open 5.5 cm;
height 4.5 cm. It can be fitted with one or more hooks which
slide along the length of the lighting unit.

InnoLine is a cold-light, built-in LED lighting appliance.
It can be shortened to any length and is finished in aluminium
and clear plastic. It is fitted with a built-in automatic sensor
and runs off a 15-watt power unit, with 200-cm electrical cable
and flat euro-plug. InnoLine is also guaranteed IP20 water resistant.

LUXIA
The Luxia model from the new F-light Generation series
of hoods looks like an extraction hood and chandelier
rolled into one. This eye-catching appliance has a de luxe
chequered pattern that alternates stainless steel and glass,
reflecting and multiplying the light to produce a dazzling
effect in the kitchen. The powerful cylinder motor inside
is lowered down onto the hob area when in use
or returns to its original position with the simplest
of movements.
Features
Luxia illuminates like an actual chandelier and takes 4x20-watt
halogen bulbs. The motor comes in the filter or extraction
version. It has electronic controls and self-supporting filters
that can be washed in the dishwasher.

WIZARD
Presenting a whole new concept
in ceiling hoods, the Wizard model
from Elica is a sophisticated
design item that is both
an extraction hood and a light.
It is made of a special
techno-polymer in a modelled
truncated-conical shape. For
optimum fume extraction, Wizard
is lowered closer to the hob when
the hood function is activated using
a telescopic movement that reveals

Functionality, ergonomics and great aesthetic appeal
for the new Blancoaxon II 6 S sink made of PuraPlus®
porcelainised ceramic, an extremely high-quality

ELLECI
Sirex is a new built-in sink made of a composite material
designed with a flat aesthetic that incorporates two new
patented ideas from the firm. For the first time it makes
use of the innovative space-saving drain unit (SIR),
which until now has only been featured on electrical sinks.
The composite material exceeds the previous upper
tolerance limit and can now withstand temperatures
as high as 250 degrees. All the models in the Sirex range
are fitted with an Anti-Heat Plate to deal with high
temperatures, that is to say it retains the heat by means
of spacer elements on the draining board that create a gap
between the plate and the sink itself. Future developments
of this plate will involve the application of different
materials that produce different aesthetic results.
One extra feature regards size: the Sirex range measures
51.5 cm across, which is one and a half centimetres wider
than standard sizes, a feature that allows for the installation
of a range of accessories on the edge of the sink.

Franke’s Fragranite range has become even more unique thanks to the exquisite stainless steel inserts on the sinks
in the Mythos Fusion series. The steel grooves on the draining board are now coated in Fragranite Durakleen,

Starck comes to the kitchen!
Freedom, irreverence, playfulness
and a unique and quite remarkable
approach to the world of product
design: no other architect
or designer has raised quite as many
eyebrows and stirred up as much
controversy as Philippe Starck,
who Duravit has now called upon
to tackle one of the focal points
of kitchen activities: the sink, an area
in which it is extremely important
to combine quality and aesthetic
appeal with functional efficiency.
Washing the dishes, cleaning
vegetables, draining pasta: Philippe
Starck offers a new take on these
basic everyday actions, restoring
their primary nature through
a completely new form and adding
to it by working on the principle
of paring down to essentials
and on the idea of beauty generated
by simplicity of lines and the
luminosity of the ceramic material.
The main principle that informs
and is omnipresent on the new sink,
made of a ceramic created from
a special compound that makes
it sturdy and particularly knockproof,
is that of the right angle. The form
is strictly quadrangular, there
is a raised side and the clear
contours display regularity and
harmony, offering at the same time
generous surfaces to stand things
on and, of course, a roomy basin.
The surface of the draining board,
which is plain and simple with
no grooves, simply tilts downwards,
while the sides of the actual basin
are raised up higher than usual.
This results in a simple prominent
rectangle standing higher than
the worktop surface and forming
an independent container, a basin
whose slimline side walls reinforce
the sense of extreme elegance.
The central element that connects
the worktop and the basin
is a hollow that also serves as
the overflow safety function: if water
reaches this hollow, any excess flows
down in a cascade onto the draining

Attention to detail is also seen
in the drain plug, which
is not screwed into position but
can be easily removed for cleaning.
The large size of the tub
(430x310x190 mm) ensures plenty
of room for manoeuvre, making
it easier to wash even bulky items
like oven trays. And thanks
to the wooden chopping board,
two different working heights
can be created, catering to different
user requirements.
The sink unit as a whole comes
in two sizes: 1000x510 mm
and 900x510 mm. The draining board
can be positioned to the left
or to the right and there is also
a version without a work surface
but with an even larger basin
(775x310x190 mm). Starck K, which
can be fitted flush to the worktop,
comes in White, Pergamon,
Anthracite and Chestnut; there
are tap holes for installation of all
the main models of taps and mixers.

(the design workshop of the Ronda
Group, an industrial group which has
been developing products involving
the use of stainless steel for over
forty years) presents an exclusive,
patented system which exploits the
natural phenomenon of the force
of magnetic attraction for a virtually

One product that adopts this
technology is Mask, a panel with a
wood-based support, clad in a metal

Two well-known Italian brands have decided to give concrete
form to the collaborations they have already established in places
like Spain and Cyprus. Ernestomeda (kitchens) and Listone Giordano
(wood floors) have joined forces to improve their presence
on the real estate market in Italy and on international markets.
Ernestomeda has developed Contract Division, a structured team
of professionals, to offer a complete range of services devoted
to those involved in the real estate business, and designed
to promote new initiatives and co-marketing activities with firms,
with the aim of accelerating sales of home units from the early
construction stage. Based in Milan, in open-plan premises
(Ernestomeda Loft) spreading over 360 square metres it meets
real estate professionals, architects, property developers
and promoters by appointment. Contract Division’s business lever
is that of giving value and prestige to property dealings, including
the kitchen in the sale or rental specifications, thereby introducing
a model already widely adopted abroad. Buyers are also offered

RIVA 1920 AND THUN: BACK TO BASICS
Living Kitchen, the area devoted to the kitchen at the Cologne
Furniture Fair (Imm), welcomed its many visitors with a Riva 1920
installation designed by Matteo Thun: La Cucina, a tribute
to simplicity and conviviality, represented by a large hearth
and a large table around which you cook, converse and dine.
It represents a return to the main functions of the kitchen:
storing, preparing and cooking food. The dominant material is wood,
in this case American black walnut and American red oak.
A kitchen which, says Thun, “is the opposite of the American kitchen
where everything is hidden away and you have to have a good
memory if you want to be able to find anything”. Memory seems
to have inspired the designer, who likes working with wood.
“The worn-away look and the sense of the passing of time is what

I like most about wood,” Thun says. “Wood, not concrete,
is the material of the 20th century. On rainy days, the wood
used for interiors absorbs the humidity and makes us feel better
and it also improves acoustics”.
This is one of the reasons why Thun and Riva 1920 chose
to use American red oak for the table and bench that complete
the kitchen.
It is the most abundant of America’s temperate forest woods,
accounting for 35% of total resources.
Sustainable forest management states in fact that these resources
are the ones that should be exploited most.

takes. Important in this
process is Veneta Cucine’s
collaboration of several
years with Domus Academy,
which has become little
short of a research
monitoring body
and has given rise to three
significant surveys on
the world of kitchens,
with their own relevant
publications.
And also to two new design
projects: Ecocompatta
(design Paolo Rizzatto)
and Liquida (design Stefano
Giovannoni and Elisa
Gargan), presented
at the last edition
of Eurocucina.
Now Veneta Cucine is taking
its Design Thinking out into
the world through its trading
partners, who are turning
their showrooms into places
not just where sales
are made but also into
places of interaction,
communication
and transmission of Italian
savoir faire.
This was seen recently
in Malta, where a series
of design workshops were
held at the C.Fino + Sons
showroom, the most
prestigious and accredited
furnishings display space
on the whole island.
On this occasion, designers
Paolo Rizzatto, Stefano
Giovannoni, Dante Donegani
and Giovanni Lauda
talked to an audience
of architects, interior
designers and others
involved in the business,
describing their experiences
designing with Veneta
Cucine and their own
personal conception
of and approaches
to design.
It was a meeting at which
various thoughts and ideas
were expressed which,
though different, shared
the same desire to give new
concrete replies, to devise
products with closer links
to reality, using original,
rather than standardised
idioms.
The Elica Group recently took its plans to move onto
the Chinese market one step further by taking part
in the latest edition of 100% Design in Shanghai,
which for the time showcased top firms from the world
of contemporary interior design at the Exhibition Centre
of Shanghai, with a showcase of furnishing complements,
lighting products and bathroom furniture and floor
and wall coverings. Elica’s presence at the event was boosted
by the fact that it recently took out a majority shareholding
in the capital of Putian, one of China’s top electrical
appliance concerns and the first among its rivals to develop
western-style kitchen hoods.
A selection of Elica hoods with a major technology
and design component was also presented at the exhibition
“The Italian Apartment”, which promoted Italian savoir faire
through a selection of iconic brands and products,
all of which display the high quality and creative of Italian
manufacturing. The façade, evocative of a typical historic
Italian palazzo painted with a trompe-l’oeil effect, formed
the backdrop for the presentation of furnishing accessories
and other products designed by Italy’s foremost furnishings
and design firms.
One of Elica’s most interesting designs - one that is fast
acquiring iconic status - is the visually striking “Pescecappa”
designed by artist Gaetano Pesce, which comes
in a numbered, diversified mini-series. This special edition
is made up of fifteen unique items (all signed by the artist)
that introduce an expressive design element into the kitchen,
a highly personal creation by Pesce that interprets Elica’s
innovative spirit, subverting traditional ideas about industrial
production and the normal relations with users. Because
of its nature, this “auteur hood” – more a work of art than
a household appliance – is aimed at an inquisitive audience
sensitive to the latest developments in contemporary art,
fashion and design.

VALCUCINE SELECTED FOR THE 2010 ADI DESIGN INDEX
VALCUCINE has been selected by ADI’s permanent design watchdog for the 2010 ADI Design Index, in the “Business Research” section.
This section brings together project developments and other initiatives which through design promote research and innovation in business
and in the local area. The nod is an important acknowledgment of the commitment Valcucine has show to environmental issues over
the last thirty years through innovative, functional products where eco-sustainability is always a central issue. Valcucine works by applying
a system that strikes a balance between exploiting and regenerating environmental resources, saving raw materials by using a design based
on de-materialisation and on the recyclability and re-use at the end of the product’s life. Hence the on-going effort to make “smart”
design choices and use innovative technologies resulting in products which reduce to a minimum the amount of material and energy used
in the manufacturing cycle.

SCAVOLINI IN NEW YORK
With the inauguration of the Scavolini Soho Gallery,
the Italian firm was one of the prominent names at iSaloni
Milano in New York last November, and for the occasion
it hosted the first stage in and the inauguration of Italian
Design Street Walking, a showroom promenade that offered
an opportunity to find out more about the brands taking part
in the event. Scavolini Soho Gallery is Scavolini USA’s first
flagship store: a 900 square-metre space on two levels.
The address - 429 West Broadway - has great cachet,
being well-known to New Yorkers as the home of the Nancy
Hoffman Gallery, one of the most famous art galleries
in the city. And to make the most of the location’s glorious
past, the refurbishment project was placed in the hands of
the SpaCe Architects studio, which has kept to the original
architecture and style of the space: a large, dramatic loft
that is the ideal backdrop for 14 kitchens which show
off the great opportunities for composition

where clients and their architects can design the ideal
kitchen together with the team of Scavolini designers and
