Tested to a Higher Standard The ASTM B117-03 standard, originally created for use in the automotive industry, helps determine potential device failure from metal corrosion. When hearing devices are subjected to these tests, they are placed in a 97° F environment with very dense atomized fog created from 5% salt water solution. Sonic Touch and nine other commercially available receiver-in-the-ear style products were tested under this condition until an audible failure was detected. A higher score in these ASTM B117-03 test results is better. 10 11 How will it Touch you ™ Touch ™ from Sonic Innovations® A Touch of Beauty 5 base colors x 15 accent clips Satin 05 Sterling 02 Penny 04 Pure 01 Slate 03 Blush 10 Tuxedo 07 Daredevil 09 Brown base Cocoa 06 Gray base Twilight 08 Beige base Black base Sunny 15 Surf 12 White base Citrus 14 Tutu 11 Lucky 13 = 75 possibilities So Many Colors With 5 base colors and 15 easily interchangeable accent colors, Sonic Touch looks just as great as it sounds. Benefit in Any Environment Hearing-impaired individuals are shown to benefit from Sonic Touch products in many different environments. In this study, APHAB benefit was measured for 15 hearing impaired volunteers at The Center for Amplification and Hearing Research in Salt Lake City, Utah. Volunteers were fit binaurally and the questionnaire was administered after four weeks of wear time. 13 10 7 4 1 -2 i/o Function 110 Gain-Dependent Expansion Input (dB SPL) Sonic Sound For very loud sounds, Sonic Sound limits any amplification that could sound distorted. Sonic Sound adjusts the amplification based on the intensity of sound for an individual frequency. ™ It’s the unique technology of Sonic Innovations that will put your patients in touch with the sounds they miss. Sonic Sound mimics the behavior of the human cochlea by detecting the intensity of sound at individual frequencies. Amplification is then applied at each frequency based on the hearing loss. -5 110 110 104 98 92 86 80 74 68 62 56 50 44 38 -5 1 -2 104 -2 4 98 1 7 10 92 4 As the intensity of sounds further increase above the level of soft speech, amplification is reduced to prevent loud sounds from becoming uncomfortably loud. 13 86 7 16 80 10 At frequencies where hearing loss is mild, less amplification is applied to reduce low-level noise that might be audible with better hearing. When the hearing loss is more severe, more amplification is applied to maintain environmental awareness. 19 74 13 22 68 16 For sounds that are at the level of soft speech, Sonic Sound applies maximum amplification based on the hearing loss. Amplifying these sounds is critical for the audibility of speech. 62 19 25 56 22 28 50 25 31 44 28 34 38 31 Gain-Dependent Expansion Gain-Dependent Expansion automatically adjusts how much amplification is applied in each frequency for soft environmental noise based on the overall amplification prescribed for the patient. 37 32 34 A Closer Look at Sonic Sound For low-intensity background sounds—for example, the rumbling of a refrigerator or hum of a fan—Sonic Sound decreases the amount of amplification in order to prevent these sounds from becoming distracting. 26 37 40 dB GAIN 40 32 104 Input (dB SPL) Subscale 26 98 Aversiveness 92 -5 86 Background Noise 16 80 Reverberation 19 74 Ease of Communication 22 68 0 25 26 -3.0 10 28 62 In this test, a lower Aided score is better. Signal-to-Noise Ratio Dependent Automatic Noise Reduction A Closer Look at Noise Reduction Sonic Innovations’ Noise Reduction algorithm constantly monitors the input to the hearing instrument and separates the steady-state noise from the modulated “signal” (i.e. speech). 110 104 98 92 86 20 Time in Seconds Input (dB SPL) Fixed Noise Reduction Chart Frequency-Dependent Noise Reduction Fixed Noise Reduction Once engaged, Fixed Noise Reduction applies the same amount of noise reduction, regardless of the intensity level of the noise. 16 14 12 OFF 80 0 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 -1.0 2 74 Noise Reduction engaging when the signal-tonoise ratio is compromised -0.8 LOW 4 68 -0.6 6 62 WITHOUT NOISE REDUCTION 0 AUDIO in dB -0.4 MEDIUM 8 56 -0.2 10 50 For each frequency, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is determined. If the SNR is compromised – that is, if the noise is equal to or greater than the speech – the noise reduction system engages. When the SNR is positive – that is, the speech is louder than the noise – the noise reduction system disengages. 0 HIGH 12 44 0.2 14 38 0.4 16 32 WITH NOISE REDUCTION Maximum Noise Attenuation 0.6 Automatic Noise Reduction As steady-state noise gets louder, Automatic Noise Reduction applies an increasing amount of noise reduction. 18 HL (dB) 0.8 26 1.0 HIGH Frequency-Dependent Noise Reduction With Frequency-Dependent Noise Reduction, the amount of Automatic Noise Reduction is customized based on the patient’s hearing loss. More noise reduction is applied in frequencies with better hearing. When the loss is more severe, less noise reduction is applied, maintaining environmental awareness. 0 10 20 30 40 8 50 MEDIUM 60 70 6 Noise Reduction Sonic Innovations’ digital noise reduction solutions go beyond providing a comfortable listening experience and actually improve speech understanding in noise. The first system, Focused Null Steering, constantly monitors the environment for the location of the loudest sound. Once the sound is located, the directional response is adjusted to minimize sounds coming from that direction. If the location of the loudest sound moves, the directional response dynamically updates to continue to reduce the sound. Adaptive Directionality Focused Null Steering 80 270 HZ VALUES A fixed Hypercardioid directional response 60 -20 21 0 16 Automatic Directionality High Noise Moderate Noise Automatic Directionality Using the signal-to-noise ratio, intensity level of the noise, and amount of wind noise as cues, the Automatic Directionality system continuously engages or disengages, providing the best directional configuration for the environment. Automatic Directionality evolving from an omni response in quiet to a directional response in noise. Adaptive Directionality – DIRECTIONALfocus™ DIRECTIONALfocus, Sonic Touch’s second adaptive directional system, offers a unique and highly effective approach to managing unwanted noise. As the name implies, DIRECTIONALfocus creates a focus area, or “beam”, in front of the listener and varies how much sounds are reduced as they move out of the beam. Touch 24 also provides an additional variation of the DIRECTIONALfocus system. FLEXIfocus allows the DIRECTIONALfocus functionality to dynamically turn on or off based on the amount of noise in the environment. In quiet, FLEXIfocus disengages. As the level of noise increases, FLEXIfocus engages to reduce the amplification of sounds outside of the beam. Adaptive Directionality DIRECTIONALfocus ® Quiet Three DIRECTIONALfocus settings and their targeted focus areas 100º Multiple Directional Strategies Sonic Touch offers several proprietary directional technologies to improve hearing in noisy situations. Touch has several automatic and adaptive directional options that provide hands-free operation in a wide variety of listening environments. 70º 50º 18 19 How will it Touch you ™ Touch ™ from Sonic Innovations® A Touch of Brilliance. Strategies for Managing Feedback Sonic Touch products are developed with multiple technologies to remove the annoying whistle and squeal of feedback. Choose Automatic or Manual Performance Automatic Options Sonic Touch is designed to handle changing listening environments in a seamless fashion. The Universal listening setting gives patients a robust “hands-free” option that is suitable for most listening situations. By combining Automatic Directionality and Focused Null Steering, the Universal configuration dynamically and imperceptibly adjusts the directional characteristics based on the level of ambient noise, location of noise, and overall signal-to-noise ratio to determine the optimum settings for the environment. Manual Override All Sonic Touch products also provide “manual override” settings that allow patients to switch to specific listening programs for different environments. Adaptive Feedback Cancellation The adaptive feedback cancellation algorithm used in Sonic Touch constantly monitors for changes in the environment that may cause feedback. When a change is detected, the phase canceling system quickly calculates and applies a “counter-signal” that removes the feedback without decreasing amplification. Fixed Feedback Cancellation Some environments—like listening to music or riding in a car—produce tonal sounds that adaptive systems can misinterpret as feedback. For these situations, Sonic Touch offers fixed feedback cancellation that is not susceptible to environmental tonal sounds. Patient Controlled Retraining Sonic Touch gives your patients the ability to “reset” the feedback canceller if there is a significant physical change in the feedback path. “Touch is probably the most marvelous thing that has happened to me in the last few years. It’s given me back my hearing.” John Miller, Patient 21 How will it Touch you ™ Touch ™ from Sonic Innovations® A Touch of Simplicity. Pre-Configured Listening Environments Sonic Touch offers a multitude of pre-configured listening environments, making programming easier than ever. Each environment combines features with the appropriate fitting response that is ideal for each listening scenario.
