When removing big limbs, always
make two cuts. The first cut should
drop the majority of the limb. The
second cut should remove the
leftover nub all the way down to
the branch collar. This practice
will help stop the bottom bark of
the limb from stripping down the
trunk of the tree.

spectacular summer in
the Gardens at Wing
Haven. From Eagle Scout projects
and children’s camps to a book
signing and preparations for
our Local Harvest Dinner, Wing
Haven has been a busy spot. In
our 'backyard' and yours, Fall is
fast approaching. Our garden
curators at the Clarkson House
and Elizabeth Lawrence House
respectively, Ben Fletcher &
Andrea Sprott, have artfully
convinced us that it is the most
important time for organizing
the garden. Thanks to their
expertise, we want to share with
all of our neighbors just the right
knowledge to prepare for the
seasons ahead.
"Planting and Pruning are the
keys to a glorious spring!", said
Fletcher. "Bulbs are a perfect place
to start", added Sprott. Daffodils
(Narcissus sp.) and Snowdrops
(Leucojum) are tried and true
southern bulbs; try Crocus and

Grape Hyacinth (Muscari sp.) for a
smaller alternative with different
color options. Tulips are a nobrainer, but they are treated as an
annual in our climate, so don't be
shocked after a season or two if
they don't bloom again. Why not
give Alliums (onion family) a shot?
They have a magnificent star-burst
bloom shape.
For larger plants, Fall is the best
time for installing those, too. Trees
and shrubs will establish a root
system since the soil temperatures
are high. They will also become
acclimated to their new home and
perform better in the spring when
planted this time of year.
Finally, removing limbs (pruning)
from trees is best done in the fall
and winter. Cooler temperatures
provide an opportunity to prune
while limiting the susceptibility
to disease or pest problems on
fresh cuts. Quick tips: make sure
your saws, loppers, shears, or other
cutting implements are sharp and
clean now so that you're ready.
We hope you'll stop by Ridgewood
Avenue to visit our gardens
at Wing Haven and Elizabeth
Lawrence House during the Fall

Fenwick’s:
Pleasing Myers Park Taste Buds for a Long Time
by Robert Steppe
S
oon after my arrival
in Myers Park some
twenty years ago I had
the delightful experience
one evening of dropping
into Fenwick’s for supper.
Many, many repeat visits
have occurred since.
Many, as I liked to eat at
the bar and chat up others
who also preferred the bar
and the long rounds of
conversation. The tables and
booths were home to family
and friends who also had
come to Fenwick’s to enjoy
the food and the friendly
atmosphere.
Fenwick’s, at 511 Providence Brunch is enjoyed on a pleasant Sunday noon time.
Road, is owned by Don
and Catherine Rabb. The site has long been a restaurant,
Oysters, Steaks and Classic Chicken Salad are among other

choices on their well-rounded menu.

Don is a native of New Orleans, and brings his specialties

to Fenwick’s. Monday is Cajun night: Jambalaya,
to the Rabbs. Catherine remembers that after taking on

heritage is really apparent
Catherine recalls, “I was 23, and we had a six month old
baby. With the hubris of youth, I never even considered
the risk of failure!”
The going was tough for Catherine and Don for the first
five years, as would be the case for any startup business.
Catherine recalls, “We had a lovely regular customer who
ate with us every weekend night, and always brought
friends. In the early days… sometimes he was the only
customer. When things finally took off, I remember him
saying ‘Oh, thank heavens. I can finally eat somewhere
else once in a while. I was worried you guys weren’t going
to make it!’ ”
Fenwick’s menus are just plain good food and the
desserts, many of which are Catherine’s own specialties,
are my favorites — like the luscious Bread and Butter
Pudding and the Buttermilk Cake. Hamburgers, Fried

is complete with Mardi Gras
beads, King Cake and of
course, Cajun food. The lucky
patron who is served the
baby hidden within the King
Cake wins a free meal.
One Christmas Eve I was in for
lunch, and the lady next to
me had ordered a Fenwick’s
catered turkey to take home.
When she was about to leave
one member of Fenwick’s
staff, Larry, said, “Ma'am that
looks heavy. May I carry it out
to the car for you?”

Fall 2014
The staff at Fenwick’s is long-time and a part of the family
of restaurant and customers. The Rabbs have three sons,
Devon, Dustin and Dane who have been part of the
operation off and on over the years. Catherine notes, “We
are a restaurant family, and every kid in it has worked
in the restaurant. Today, Dustin is most involved, and is
turning out to be a darn good cook and manager.”
The Williams family has played an important long-time
role at Fenwick’s: ‘Big’ Dave Williams and his son ‘Lil’ Dave.
Catherine: “Big Dave worked as a Chef at Fenwick’s from
the day we opened in 1984, until 2012. His son, Lil Dave,
has worked with us for a decade, and we are all hoping
his adorable son Baby Dave will someday — many years
from now — join us.”
On a sad note, Big Dave passed away on May 3, 2014.
Catherine remembers, “My first job was in my hometown
of Zanesville, Ohio at a Ponderosa Steakhouse. My job as
a bus child was to greet guests at the door saying ‘Howdy
Pardners, welcome to Ponderosa’. A line cook there saw
that I was interested in cooking so he turned a plastic
milk crate upside down so I could stand on it and reach
the grill (I’m short) He let me flip steaks once in a while. I
thought it was the coolest thing ever. I was hooked.
I met Don when we both worked at a place called
Shenanigan’s in Charlotte, and wanted to do our own
place. We opened Fenwick’s shortly thereafter in 1984.”
These days, Catherine is an instructor at Johnson & Wales
University, where she teaches culinary students about
beverages. She is now pursuing her Master of Wine
Certification, and pitching in at Fenwick’s on weekends
cooking for the famous Fenwick’s Sunday Brunch.

L
ast winter was a banner year for wintering
hummingbirds in Mecklenburg County. From
November 2013 thru March 2014 I received twentythree reports of hummingbirds visiting feeders in the
county. Myers Park was well represented with up to four
birds that settled in at feeders and even more reports of
incidental sightings of birds passing through.
Hummingbirds spending the winters north of the Gulf
States is a relatively new phenomenon. It is clear that
the southeastern United States is becoming a preferred
wintering ground for some hummingbirds. What is most
interesting is that virtually all of the birds are of species
that nest in the western United States. Most of these are
rufous hummingbirds, but other species such as blackchinned, calliope, and Anna’s have been recorded here
too. Researchers scattered across both Carolinas are
studying these birds by placing bands on their legs to
track their movements. Some birds banded in North
Carolina have been re-captured hundreds of miles away.
Again this year I am requesting that you consider keeping
hummingbird feeders up through the winter and report
any wintering hummingbirds to me. Any hummingbird
10
26099_MPHOA_Newsletter.indd 10
still present
after November first is
likely to be one of the western species.
Contact me at piephofft@aol.com. It would be great
also if a photo could be obtained and sent to me too. It
doesn’t have to be a great photo, just identifiable. That
way I can physically document the record and possibly
use the photo to compare to birds from the same area to
see if birds are being shared among neighbors too. I may
want to try to see the birds myself if they look particularly
interesting.
Around October I will publish a column in the Charlotte
Observer about winter hummingbirds. I will also send out
a few blogs reminding folks to watch for hummers and to
keep their feeders up through the winter. Read my weekly
birding column on Saturdays in the Observer and follow

Litigation Update
O
n July 29, 2014, the North Carolina Court of Appeals ruled in favor
of the MPHA and BT Atkinson, reversing a lower court decision in
favor of Queens University and the City of Charlotte (COA13-1226).
The COA agreed with the MPHA's position that the previously approved
Text Amendment to the City Zoning Ordinance allowing exemption of
parking decks from floor area ratio or FAR limitations in single and multifamily districts did not comply with state law in how it was adopted. The
unanimous decision ordered remand of the case for entry of judgment in
MPHA's favor and that declares the Text Amendment void. Queens and the
City can file a petition to have the decision reviewed by the NC Supreme
Court but these are not routinely granted given the unanimous decision by
the COA. In the interim, the MPHA will continue to reach out to members
of City Council to ensure that any future efforts to amend the City Zoning
Ordinance will result in a reasonable balance between the interests of the
University and the neighborhood.

he Myers Park neighborhood once again went
above and beyond in helping make the 13th
Annual 24 Hours of Booty presented by Levine
Cancer Institute a huge success. To date, more than
$1.43 million has been raised to help support patient
survivorship and navigation programs.
On July 25-26, 1,200 participants and cancer survivors
from 26 different states and a stand-out crowd along the
“Booty Loop” joined together to help put cancer in its
place. From the great yard parties to the amazing cheer
support along the course, the neighborhood spirit was
contagious and inspirational! We are truly grateful for all
that everyone does to support our mission and to show
cancer survivors that they aren’t in this fight alone.
An event highlight was the ‘Myers Park Spirit Award’
contest, which recognized the homes with the most
spirit. Some of the winners included David Smoots,
Kathy Beatey-Davis and Brendan Pierce. Thanks again to
everyone around the loop for making the event so special
for our riders!
Please keep in touch 24 Hours of Booty throughout the
year on Twitter at www.twitter.com/24hoursofbooty
and on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/24HOB.
