Faculty will find EndNote in the BI Menu. When you have finished the installation, you can start Word. You should now see an EndNote tab: Mac users: Follow the steps shown in our FAQ on how to install the EndNote toolbar. Click ”Go to EndNote”. You can create a new EndNote library and give it a proper name, for example References. Save it in My Documents or your home directory on the student network. NB! Always remember to backup your files!! BI Norwegian Business School Library January 2012 s. 3 Getting started with EndNote The EndNote-library opens and you can start creating new references or import them from an external database. Creating new references manually. 1. Select New Reference. 2. Choose the right Reference Type. 3. Fill in the bibliographical information. The registration will be saved automatically when you close the window. BI Norwegian Business School Library January 2012 s. 5 How to import references Import references from BIBSYS directly from EndNote With EndNote X5 you have to download a connection file to search BIBSYS Ask. See http://www.bi.edu/library/endnote/bibsys for details. Select whether to use the online search that imports the results automatically into your EndNote library, or the temporary online search that requires moving references to the permanent library. We strongly recommend to perform the search in Online Search Mode (Temporary library) Select Online Search Mode (Temporary Library) by clicking on the globe-icon. Under ”Online search” you will find the last used databases. If BIBSYS is not here, click ”more…” and find BIBSYS in the dialog box: BI Norwegian Business School Library January 2012 s. 6 When the connection has been made, EndNote displays a Search tab: Example: NB! Use Personal Author (Last, First) when searching for authors in BIBSYS. Use the abbreviation character ”?” if you don’t have the complete name. The dialog box displays the number of references that were found to match your search request: Click OK to retrieve the references. BI Norwegian Business School Library January 2012 s. 7 To select some of the references, press Ctrl and click on the relevant references. To select all, go to Edit – Select All (or press Ctrl-A). (You may have to activate the window first by clicking one of the references) In the References-menu select Copy References To -> to transfer the selected references to your EndNote-library: BI Norwegian Business School Library January 2012 s. 8 How to import references from BIBSYS Ask to EndNote You can also choose to export directly from BIBSYS Ask - http://ask.bibsys.no Mark the references you want to export and click OK for ”Send to EndNote” Select Open in the next dialog box. Then select your EndNote library. In some cases the references will download automatically into your EndNote library. BI Norwegian Business School Library January 2012 s.10 Important things to note when you export from BIBSYS Ask Reference to edited book: Send this reference to EndNote and it will appear like this: You have to change the “Reference type” from “Book” to “Edited Book” BI Norwegian Business School Library January 2012 s. 11 How to export references from Business Source Complete (BSC) Open BSC from the library webpage http://www.bi.edu/library/databases Do a search and mark the references you want to export by clicking Add to folder (1) Example: Beard (in AU Author) and advertising. Click on Folder (2) to retrieve the marked references. 2 Marked references will be added in this Folder. 1 BI Norwegian Business School Library January 2012 s.12 Select to mark your reference(s) once more and click on Export (3) 3 Choose Save in the Direct export to EndNote…-format 1 2 BI Norwegian Business School Library January 2012 s.13 If you are asked where you want to save the references, save them in the relevant EndNote-library: You can export to EndNote from a wide range of databases, for example ISI Web of Science and JSTOR. BI recommends that you use a style based on the Chicago 16B-style. MSc-students within Organizational Psychology can use the APA 6th-style To find the APA 6th – BI, Chicago 16th - BI English and Chicago 16th - BI Norsk styles in this menu you have to download them from http://www.bi.edu/library/Training-and-support/EndNote/Recommended-styles-for-BI/ Click Select Another Style… to see all the available styles. The style may be changed at any time during your writing. BI Norwegian Business School Library January 2012 s.15 How to use EndNote while writing a Word document (Cite While You Write) Alternative 1 Mark the name of the author (Beard) in your text, select Insert Citation (the magnifier icon) in order to search in your open EndNote-library BI Norwegian Business School Library January 2012 s.16 Mark/click on the reference(s) you want, click Insert and the reference is inserted into the text: BI Norwegian Business School Library January 2012 s.17 Alternative 2 It’s also possible to search for a specific citation from Word. Click Insert Citation. Perform a search. It is possible to search for author name, title, title words, keywords or year. Highlight the desired reference(s) in the search list and click Insert. The chosen citations will be inserted in the document at the position of the cursor. Alternative 3 You can also search directly, without marking the author in the text. Click Go to EndNote. Highlight the desired reference(s) in your EndNote library. Click the Insert Citation-icon. The citation will be inserted in the word-document at the place where the cursor is positioned. BI Norwegian Business School Library January 2012 s.19 Excluding Author Or: Mark the citation and Right-Click: BI Norwegian Business School Library January 2012 s.20 Deleting citations Mark the citation and click Edit & Manage Citation BI Norwegian Business School Library January 2012 s.21 Compressed library You can save your complete library (the filename.enl file as well as its associated .DATA folder and all of its contents) to a single compressed filename.enlx file in order to easily back up your library or send a copy to a colleague or fellow student. Later, you can easily restore (unzip) the compressed library with EndNote. To restore the compressed library file use Endnote to open the filename.enlx file, which will extract the . ENL file and the .DATA folder to the same folder where the . enlx file is located. Use EndNote to open the filename.enl file as you normally would to use the library.
