Shared lane pavement markings (or “sharrows”)
are bicycle symbols that show bicyclists the best
location to ride on the road, avoid car doors
and remind drivers to share the road with
bicyclists. Unlike bicycle lanes, sharrows do
not designate a particular part of the street
reserved exclusively for bicyclists. Sharrows
are often used on roads too narrow for
motor vehicles and bicycles to travel
comfortably side by side within the
same traffic lane. Motorists must
remember to give bicyclists 3 feet
of space when passing. Whether
sharrows are present or not,
bicyclists are always expected
to follow the rules of the road.
