Naraus upper terminal, views of the Surselva, Graubünden 17 Flims Foppa – Naraus. Flims (1,095 m) – Foppa (1,425 m) – Naraus (1,844 m) The vantage points of the skiing resort of Flims (known as the White Arena) are accessible in summer thanks to its chairlifts, which also provide access to some great high-level trails. Note that not all the installations operate in the summer. www.flims.ch On the edge of the World Heritage Site Cableway/railway type Chairlifts Lower terminal Flims Length 3,322 m Journey time 19 minutes Segneshütte Alp Naraus Flimserstein Foppa Standseilbahn Zahnradbahn Luftseil-/Gondelbahn Sesselbahn Flims Dorf Crap Sogn Gion Trin Mulin Murschetg Laax High-level trail to the Segneshütte mountain hut Starting at the upper terminal of the Naraus chairlift, you zigzag northwards below the point at which the Flims rockslide started. The panoramic mountain trail soon turns gently towards the Untere Segnes plateau. The landscape hereabouts – a mosaic of alluvial soils and moorland – is hugely attractive. It would be well worth your while to climb up into the UNESCO Sardona World Heritage Site on the right and admire the Tschingelhörner peaks as well as the famous Martinsloch natural hole and geological thrust fault. Located on the lower edge of the plateau, the Segneshütte mountain hut serves excellent food and offers accommodation in double and four-bed rooms. The descent is via Naraus or the midway terminal at Foppa. www.MySwitzerland.com/w17 4.3 km medium 2 h 00 Flims, Foppa – Naraus Worth the trip The point at which the Flims rockslide started: here, following the retreat of the Ice Age glacier, some 10 km3 of rock broke away and crashed into the valley, blocking the Rhine. Nature The Tschingelhörner peaks are where Verrucano rock dating back 250 million years (to the formation of the Alps) has been thrust on top of younger (35 to 50 million years) flysch. Historical aspects 1945 saw the building of the world’s first automatically detachable chairlift installation featuring Von Roll VR101 cable grips and seats that were perpendicular to the slope. Insider’s tip Anyone interested in local history should make their way on their descent to the midway terminal at Foppa and walk the Romansh educational trail to Scheia and Fidaz. www.MySwitzerland.com/bb17 Getting there, opening hours and reservations How to get there From Chur by bus or car to Flims (take the Flims exit before entering the bypass tunnel).
