Environmental Change Technology What will the academy look like? Membership Year (Sept. thru August) Society’s Expectations Globalization Business Model Moocs, On-line learning, Flipped classroom, Competency-based learning, Dropbox, Open Access Journals, SSRN, Article of the Future, Mobile Access, etc. Focus on educational outcomes, perceived declining value, limited appreciation for the link between scholarship and enriched educational and economic outcomes. Increased research expectations internationally. Rise of international institutions of higher education. Changing revenue base, competitive environment, market demand and expectations. •New presentation skills, pedagogical approaches. •Increase the efficiency of research. •Co-location of researchers less important. •Metrics for measuring research/teaching productivity and impact. •Create value for society. •Measure and communicate value created. •Opportunities for collaboration. •Increased competition for US journal space. •Introduction of new journals outside of US. •Experiment with new business models. •Focus on efficiency and effectiveness. •Consider changing student needs and demographics. But there is a dark side of open-access publishing. • Still, researchers have found scientists are: Near-term horizon (1 year). – MOOCS – expected to grow in number and influence (Coursera, EdX, and Udacity). – Tablet computing. • Open-Access Journals Mid-term horizon (2-3 years). – In a test of the open-access model one researcher found 157 open-access journals willing to publish a completely bogus nonsensical cancer-research article. – Games and gamification. – Learning analytics – use of big data to gain insights about student behavior and learning. • Far-term horizon (4-5 years). – 3-D printing – increased use in the arts, design, manufacturing, and the sciences to support innovation, illustrate complex concepts or illuminate novel ideas. – Wearable technology – link to higher education still relatively undefined but as an example use of sensors to track data, such as vital signs, in real-time possible tool for certain types of research. From Society’s Perspective – Generally poor judges of the quality of research papers. – Rarely agree on quality assessments. – Overweight where research is published and the significance of citation rates. • Implication? Metrics to assess research quality and impact are changing. – Article-level metrics as opposed to journal-level metrics such as downloads (e.g. SSRN downloads), cross-disciplinary impact, news-media and blog coverage, discussion activity. – Measures that rank the merits of components of a work such as the text, the data, underlying software, etc. (pushed by “the article of the future.”) The Value of a College Degree - Reality • Pew Research Center study: – 60% of Americans believe colleges have a positive effect on society, but 26% said colleges have “a negative effect”. – 57% feel colleges do not provide a good value for the money and 75% say it is too expensive to afford. • Northeastern University poll found 90% of 18 to 30 year olds believe American higher education needs to change to remain competitive. • On the upside – public opinion is shifting toward more “practical” majors (e.g. accounting ), Source: Caumont, A. 2014. 6 key findings about going to college. http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2014/02/11/6-key-findings-about-going-to-college/ Health of Higher Education Industry Viewed from the Outside • • Not good. In January 2013 Moody’s Investors Service cut its 2013 outlook for U.S. higher education to negative, citing mounting pressure on revenue sources. • Bain & Company concluded nearly a third of universities are financially unsound (check out your university at www.thesustainableuniversity.com). • Why? What is challenging the traditional business model? – Declining state and federal support. • With a federal debt nearing $55 to $65 Trillion unlikely to improve anytime soon. – Economic and regulatory constraints on tuition increases. • $1 trillion dollars in student loan debt with default rates at record levels. • Tuition rising faster than family incomes. – Cost of facility, faculty, and student services arms race now embedded in fixed costs. – Cost of complexity and inefficiency. – Increased competition. 3 3/29/2014 AAA Activities • • • • • Sharpening Our Vision Pathways Commission Region Pilots Publications Ethics Global Engagement AAA Strategic Planning: “Sharpening our Vision” What will the academy look like 10 years from now? Some examples of where AAA might play a role: – Training programs for faculty on use of new technologies for teaching and research. – Develop/support the adoption of improved modes of assessment of research and teaching quality and impact. – Develop strategic partnerships globally and between the academy and the business community. – Provide members a concentrated voice in political debates impacting higher education. – Provide opportunities for faculty to gain industry exposure relevant to research and teaching. – Use of technology to support costly PhD education. – Creating centers to build opportunities for collaboration and sustain activities. • A. Strategic Initiatives Task Force – Map initiatives to AAA goals and objectives – Consider business model implications – Prioritize and recommend actions – Co-Chairs: B. Strategic Organization Task Force – Focus on organizational enhancements to facilitate transformational change – Co-Chairs: • Julie Smith-David (Chief Innovation Officer) • Steve Moehrle (VP Finance, elect). • Tracey Sutherland (Executive Director) • Christine Botosan (AAA presidentelect) SOV II is sorting through the initiatives and making recommendations to the board. 2012-13: Sharpening Our Vision Pathways Commission Implementation Phase!
