Habitat for Humanity may be best known for building houses, but this
week its volunteers are showing that the organization offers much
more.
A week of community development projects in the Westside Garden
District neighborhood in Pensacola kicked off Monday as part of
Habitat for Humanity’s 2013 AmeriCorps Build-a-Thon, which was
held in three other cities this spring and will wrap up in Washington,
D.C., on Saturday.

Habitat for Humanity staff and AmeriCorps volunteers
kicked off the 2013 AmeriCorps Build-a-Thon in
Pensacola today, a week of community development
projects in the Westside Garden District Neighborhood
in Pensacola. About 80 AmeriCorps volunteers from
across the country along with about 20 Pensacola
Habitat for Humanity volunteers and staff members will
be working this week in the area from Gregory to
Cervantes Streets in between Pace Boulevard and A
Street. Rather than building homes from the ground up
like in previous Build-a-Thons, volunteers will work on
projects including yard maintenance, land clearing,
sidewalk repairs and address painting.
Natalie Shearlock, director of community
engagement for Pensacola Habitat for
Humanity. “Then we were awarded this build
event, so we thought it was a great opportunity
to have lots of hands on the projects that
needed to be done.”
Clive Rainey, the first volunteer with Habitat for
Humanity when it was founded in 1976, said
that he is excited to be working in Pensacola
this week to revitalize the neighborhood.

“Our name is Habitat for Humanity, and Habitat
always meant more than houses,” Rainey said.
“It meant the surroundings, it meant the
community. And that’s part of what we’re doing
here.”

Habitat for Humanity and AmeriCorps
members also are teaming up with Friends of
St. John’s Cemetery, a local volunteer group
that works to keep up the grounds of the
historic cemetery. Volunteers will be working
this week on restoring the cemetery
gatehouse, restoring monuments and
recording all of the graves with photographs.
Annie Mack, a Habitat homeowner who lives
in the Westside Garden District neighborhood,
said that the work being done during the Builda-Thon this week is a big help to her and her neighbors.
“I appreciate the job that they’re doing to clean up our neighborhood,
and they’re doing an excellent job,” Mack said. “It’s going to help this
community good, because it was a lot of work that was needed to be
done.”
