CELEBRATIONS Weekend Daily News Page 6C Saturday/Sunday June 30-July 1, 2012 NEW ARRIVALS ANNIVERSARIES BIRTHDAYS Dressler Blakeman Conner Levi Blakeman was born March 7 at Aurora West Allis Medical Center to Erica and Joseph Blakeman, of Milwaukee. He weighed 2 pounds, 13 ounces, and was 14 1/2 inches long at birth. He joins Benjamin Gabriel, 4, at home. He is the grandson of David Van Fleet and the late Constance Van Fleet, of Beloit; and Jo Blakeman and Mark Blakeman, both of Beloit. Ken Dressler will celebrate his 80th birthday with a party at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 7, at the VFW, 2711 S. Afton Road, Beloit. Ken was born July 6, 1932, in Beloit. He married Lois A. Dressler in Beloit in 1954. She died in 2004. Ken was employed by Taylor Company in Rockton, retiring in 1994. He has lived in Beloit all his life. He enjoys fishing, gardening and spending time with family and grandchildren. He has five children: Debra Vance, Beloit; Donald (Beverly) Dressler, Rockton; Steven (Cindy) Dressler, Black River Falls, Wis.; Lori (Kurt) Simplot, South Beloit; and Kathy Dressler (George Baumann) Dressler, Beloit. Blakeman Huebbe Mason Thomas Huebbe was born June 22 at Beloit Memorial Hospital to Maggie Finley and Greg Huebbe, of Beloit. He weighed 7 pounds, 2 ounces, and was 20 inches long at birth. He joins Braylen, 3, at home. His grandparents are Tom and Kim Finley, Greg Huebbe Sr., and Duane and Kim Phetteplace, all of Beloit. RECOGNITIONS Swiggum Austyn Nicholas Nievez Swiggum was born June 20 at Beloit Memorial Hospital to Joaquin and Christina (Straight) Swiggum. He weighed 5 pounds, 15 ounces, and was 19 inches long at birth. He joins Abiegale, 7, at home. His grandparents are Wayne and Joan Straight and Sharillynn Clemons, all of Beloit. MILITARY U.S. Army News Army Pvt. Victor A. Hirst has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga. During the nine weeks of training, he received training in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, and Army history, core values and traditions. Additional training included development of basic combat skills and battlefield operations and tactics, and experiencing use of various weapons and weapons defenses available to the infantry crewman. Hirst is the son of Cindy Norwood of Anson, Texas, and Victor A. Hirst, of Beloit. He is a 2010 graduate of Anson High School, Texas. Mackenthun Richard and Mary Mackenthun, of South Beloit, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with their family. Richard Mackenthun of Frazee, Minn., and Mary Brandvold of Detroit Lakes, Minn., were married June 30, 1962, in First Lutheran Church, Detroit Lakes. They have lived in the Roscoe and South Beloit area for 46 years. Richard is retired from Hononegah High School and Mary is retired from Prairie Hill School. The couple have three children: Anita (Mark) Rumage of Davis, Ill.; Andrew (Michele) Mackenthun of South Beloit; and Alana Mackenthun of Chicago. They have two grandchildren, Seth Rumage and Luke Rumage. BAREA Scholarships Beloit Area Retired Educators Association recently awarded two $500 scholarships to Hannah Logterman, pictured center above, from Clinton High School, and Paige Parish, right, from Beloit Memorial High School. Both 2012 graduates plan to pursue degrees in education. Ralph Irvin, a member of the scholarship committee, presented the awards. U.S. Army Enlistment Four area young men have joined the United States Army under the Delayed Entry Program. The program gives young men and women the opportunity to delay entering active duty for up to one year. The enlistment gives the new soldier the option to learn a new skill, travel and become eligible to receive as much as $85,536 toward a college education through the Montgomery GI Bill and the Army College Fund. For those who qualify, new soldiers can earn up to $65,000 for student loan repayment. After completion of basic military training, soldiers receive advanced individual training in their career job specialty. Robert A. Reinke will report to Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla., for basic training in October. He graduated in 2010 from Craig High School, Janesville. He is the son of Mary Lang, of Beloit, and Robert Reinke, of Janesville. Cody C. Keller will report to Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla., for basic training in October. He graduated in 2010 from Parkview High School, Orfordville. He is the son of Kris Mauhinny and stepson of Bert Mauhinny of Janesville, and son of Craig Keller and stepson of Laurie Imhoff of Footville. Alvin P. Williams will report to Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga., for basic training in September. He graduated in 2011 from Beloit Memorial High School. He is the son of Alvin Williams, of Beloit, and Sheila Ringo, of Kankakee, Ill. Joshua T. O’Brien will report to Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga., for basic training in August. He graduated in 2012 from Beloit Memorial High School. He is the son of Deborah and Thomas O’Brien, of Beloit. RECOGNITIONS St. Mary’s Dean’s List Saint Mary’s College, Notre Dame, Ind., has named two students from the Stateline Area to its Dean’s List for the spring semester: from Beloit: Brianna Stanbrough; from South Beloit: Jennifer Gracyalny. Students placed on the Dean’s List have achieved a grade point average of 3.6 or higher on a 4.0 scale while carrying at least 12 graded credit hours. They must have no incompletes and no grades lower than a C. Zimbrick UW-Platteville Scholarship Walter and Lucille Zimbrick will celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary with a dinner July 1 with family and friends at the Butterfly Club. Lucille Starker and Walter Zimbrick were married July 2, 1947, in Sun Prairie. They have lived in Beloit for 63 years. Walter was a partner in the H. G. Siepert Co. - CPAs. The couple have four children and four grandchildren. The University of Wisconsin-Platteville has awarded scholarships to its returning students for the 2012-13 academic year. Among the award winners is Nick Oldenburg, from Beloit, who won the Patricia Collins Scholarship totaling $500. RECOGNITIONS UW-Eau Claire Dean’s List The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire has released the names of students placed on the Dean’s List for the spring semester. Students from Beloit were: William Hotchkiss, Kathryn Lyman, Phillip Schladweiler and Megan Zandler; from Orfordville, Charissa Drake. RECOGNITIONS UW-Platteville Grads University of Wisconsin-Platteville has announced the names of local area students who received degrees at the college’s commencement held May 12. They were: Nikolas Deverneuil, of Rockton, Bachelor of Science, industrial technology; Jelena Gagula, of Beloit, Bachelor of Science, business administration; Benjamin Price, of Roscoe, Bachelor of Science, criminal justice; Kevin Wellnitz, of Orfordville, Bachelor of Science, mechanical engineering; Cassandra Young, of Clinton, Bachelor of Science, reclamation, environment and conservation. Fort Lewis College Grad Fort Lewis College, Durango, Colo., held its commencement April 28. The following area student was among the graduates: from Beloit: Elizabeth Rasmussen, Bachelor of Arts, sociology, human services. UW-River Falls Dean’s List The University of Wisconsin-River Falls has announced that Felicia Kitzman, of Clinton, has been named to the Dean’s List for the spring semester. To be named to the Dean’s List a full-time undergraduate student must earn a grade point average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. Augustana Dean’s List Augustana College has announced the names of students from the Stateline Area who were named to the college’s Dean’s List. From Rockton: Margaret Blackburn, Mackenzie Kelling, Madison Neece, James Tenney and Melissa Van Lanen; from Roscoe: Alexander Killion, Mary Liles, Brett McWilliams and Matthew Paris. Students named to the Dean’s List have maintained a grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale. Huntington Dean’s List Huntington University has named Miles Allen, of Roscoe, and Brittany Edmonds, of Beloit, to its Dean’s List for the spring semester. To be placed on the Dean’s List students must be enrolled full-time with a load of 12 hours or more in graded courses and must achieve a grade point average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. Upper Iowa Dean’s List Upper Iowa University has released its Dean’s List for the 2012 spring semester. To be honored, the undergraduate must have earned a minimum 3.50 G.P.A. for the semester while enrolled as a full-time student. Named to the Dean’s List, from Rockton, is Victoria Booth. $ 00 1 OFF Architecture Award Angela (Berg) Odom, formerly of Beloit and a graduate of Beloit Catholic High School, was awarded the 2012 Greene Award for Architecture Thesis Excellence and the Architecture Thesis Commendation by Boston Architectural College for her thesis entitled, “Moving Space: The Principles of Movement as a Bridge between Architecture and Landscape.” The Greene Award is given each year to architecture master’s degree students who have demonstrated outstanding work on their thesis project. Odom, the daughter of John and Marianne Berg, of Beloit, is the principal architect for Odom Architects, P. C. in Mobile, Ala., and continues her studies in movement theory and its application to architecture. If you have submitted a photo, please pick it up at the front counter after it has run in the newspaper. Unclaimed photos are discarded after two weeks. Military and college graduations or honors are published after the Beloit Daily News receives notice from the school or military branch. It is up to the student or enlisted person to tell the school or military which newspaper these annoucements should be sent to for publication.
