Recovering lost documents
Volunteers organize
documents lost in
Illinois tornado.
Associated Press
MORTON, Ill. — A central
Illinois public library is working to reunite storm victims
with lost family documents
scattered during last month’s
tornadoes.
More than 1,000 items have
been collected and catalogued
at the Morton Public Library.
Another 1,000 or so documents
still need to be sorted by volunteers and more are arriving by
mail.
Officials said the material
started arriving at the library
several days after two dozen
twisters hit the state Nov. 17.
The collection includes photos, military records, report
cards, love letters, marriage
licenses and even baseball
cards. The workers also are
storing a family’s German Bible
from the 1880s, old slides and
a Boy Scout’s camping journal
from the 1950s.
Workers at the library hope
to be able to return the items to
their owners.
“We’re in this for the long
haul,” said Laura Ruff, a volunteer from nearby Washington
who is working on the project.
Most of the documents were
scattered when storms raked
across the state causing damage from far southern Illinois
to the Chicago suburbs.
But Washington bore the
brunt of the damage. A tornado with winds that topped
190 mph damaged or destroyed
more than 1,000 homes in the
community.
Documents carried away in
the storms have been found
more than 100 miles away.
“Returning these items to
their owners as quickly as possible is our mission,” said volunteer Heather Binder.
Workers are numbering each
item found, noting where it
was discovered. In some cases,
they’re also trying to research
possible owners and posting
photos of some items on Facebook.
So far, they’ve already managed to reunite some families
with their lost belongings,
including military medals that
belonged to a woman’s dead
brother and a memory card
filled with family photos.
“Every day is empowering,”
said Margie Gale, who is one
of three people overseeing the
project.
Reva S. Simpson, 68, of rural
Canton, Mo., died Sunday, Dec. 8,
2013, after a seven-year battle with
cancer.
Born Nov. 27, 1945, in Kirksville, Mo., she was the daughter of
Melvin G. and Nona P. Moore Kerfoot. On April 3, 1965, she married
Wayne H. Simpson.
Mrs. Simpson was a homemaker. She graduated from Wyaconda High School in 1964 and had
worked at the former Dryden’s in
Keokuk.
She was a member of Liberty
Baptist Church. She loved to do
crafts, especially plastic canvas,
making Christmas ornaments
each year for her grandchildren.
She also liked to crochet.
Survivors include her husband;
four daughters, Karen Gates and
Sandra Denning, both of Alexandria, Mo., Janet Parrish of LaBelle,
Mo., and Lisa Jacobson of Greentop, Mo.; seven grandchildren;
two step-grandchildren; one greatgranddaughter; one stepgreatgranddaughter; one brother, James
Kerfoot of Wyaconda, Mo.; two sisters including Gayle Fryer of Kansas City; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by
her parents and one sister.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8
p.m. today at Wilson Funeral Home
in Kahoka, Mo., where the family
will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
The funeral for Mrs. Simpson
will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Wilson Funeral Home, with the Rev.
Dwight Snead officiating. Burial
will be in Liberty Cemetery, rural
Williamstown, Mo.
A memorial has been established for the American Cancer
Society.

IOWA CITY — An Iowa City
woman convicted of vehicular
homicide while drunk has been
sentenced to 25 years in prison.
Miranda Lalla received the
