Dear Partners and Friends,
What happens when a child, who hasn’t experienced happiness in weeks, smiles? The room lights up, the smile is
contagious and new found hope and confidence can be shared.
Around the world, every day, too many children are unfortunately faced with tremendous challenges that affect
their health, their happiness, and their survival. At Mattel, we believe that we can make a meaningful difference in
the lives of children in need, one child at a time as we Play Together with our communities as stated in Mattel’s
corporate values.
Through our Philanthropy Programs in 2007, fifty employees from around the world became the first global volunteer
team of Mattel employees helping athletes at the Special Olympics World Games in Shanghai. Mattel toys brought
smiles to the faces of thousands of children in hospitals in partnership with the National Association of Children’s
Hospitals. We helped bring literacy to children in the Philippines, many who have become the first readers in their
families, thanks to Save the Children’s Raising a Reader program. And, Mattel supported the health of thousands of
children in partnership with the Mattel Children’s Hospital UCLA.
In 2007, the Mattel Philanthropy Programs positively impacted the lives of more than 3 million children in 75
countries. Our philanthropic commitment of donating 2% pre-tax profit continued when our philanthropic programs
totaled approximately $16 million last year.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Mattel Children’s Foundation, an outstanding achievement that is
evidence of Mattel’s ongoing commitment to making a meaningful difference with children. Since 1978,
the Mattel Children’s Foundation has played together with thousands of charitable organizations and positively
impacted millions of children. Over the years, the Foundation has funded new technologies, after-school activities,
literacy projects, and programs to promote the health of children around the world. We continue that commitment
today with programs that include our Signature Partners and international grantmaking activities.

Program Overview
Mattel’s commitment to giving back to its communities
and supporting children in need is evident in its
global philanthropic programs which include the
Mattel Children’s Foundation and its international
grantmaking efforts, product donations, corporate
contributions and employee volunteerism. As the
largest toy manufacturer in the world, Mattel brings
smiles to children’s faces through the design and
manufacture of safe and fun toys for children as well
as its philanthropic activities.
Contributed $16 Million in 2007
In 2007, Mattel donated approximately $16 million
in cash and product to support children in need,
which continues our philanthropic commitment of
donating more than 2% of our pre-tax profits to
charitable activities that support children.

Foundation
Thirty years ago, the Mattel Children’s Foundation
was created with a vision of making a meaningful
difference in the lives of children in need around the
world. The Foundation has funded thousands of
organizations during its history and supported millions
of children through grants to charitable organizations
serving youth. Over the years, the Foundation has
funded technology, health care, literacy, girls
empowerment, and international programs.
The Foundation has supported a number of programs
over the years, including:
• Mattel Family Learning Programs: Computer learning labs for underserved children in the U.S., Hong Kong, Mexico and Canada.
• Helping Kids Grow: Supporting mobile clinics
to provide preventive healthcare to low-income children.
• Hand in Hand: Supporting partnerships of
parents, schools and communities.
In 2007, the Mattel Children’s Foundation donated
approximately $5 million to more than 1,500
organizations serving children. The Foundation
granted funds in nearly 40 countries and impacted
the lives of millions of children this year.

SIGNATURE PARTNERS
Charitable organizations chosen as multi-year partners.
For ten years, Mattel and the
Mattel Children’s Hospital UCLA
have partnered together to address
the health and well being of more
than 100,000 children annually. The
hospital’s new facility, scheduled
to open this year, is the most
technologically-advanced of its
kind. With Mattel toys, funding,
volunteers, sponsorships and in-kind
services, the hospital supports the
social, emotional and developmental
needs of the child as well as their
medical requirements. The Mattel
Children’s Hospital UCLA, a vital part
of the UCLA Medical Center, has
consistently been ranked “Best in
the West” in the U.S. News & World
Report’s annual ranking of
children’s hospitals.

Mattel’s global partnership with
Special Olympics (SO) impacted the
lives of thousands of children with
intellectual disabilities in 45 countries
in 2007. More than 7,500 athletes
received a one-of-a-kind World
Games Hot Wheels® at the 2007
SO World Games in Shanghai. In
addition, Mattel continued support
of the SO Get Into It® curriculum
in 6,000 schools and the global
expansion of the Young Athletes
Program™ engaging 15,000 children
ages two through eight in 17 different
countries. Mattel employees stay
involved through Team Mattel,
active in 40 different global locations
last year.
In this third year of partnership, Mattel
and Save the Children continued
their efforts to help bring school
success to nearly 10,000 at-risk
children from birth to age five in El
Salvador, the Philippines and rural
U.S. locations. Through Save the
Children’s Early Steps to School
Success program, Mattel supported
literacy development and social
skills through home visits, parent
meetings, risk assessments, and
center-based programming in
60 schools and parent-child centers.
Mattel also provided emergency
relief funds to Save the Children’s
Safe Spaces shelter program
providing youth activities in shelters
following the Southern California
wildfires in the Fall of 2007.
Mattel has donated more than
150,000 toys to 200 children’s
hospitals across the U.S. over the
past three years in partnership with
the National Association of Children’s
Hospitals and Related Institutions
(NACHRI). Fisher-Price® mobiles,
Barbie® dolls, Tyco® R/C cars and
other toys provide a moment of
respite and a smile to children
battling serious health conditions in
the hospital setting. Funding was also
provided to survey children’s hospital
programs that prevent, manage and
treat childhood obesity in their
communities. The results of the
survey will be used to identify best
practice standards to be shared in
year two of this effort.
Mattel continued its unprecedented
support of the Children Affected by
AIDS Foundation (CAAF), which was
founded by a Mattel executive, and its
annual fundraiser, Dream Halloween®.
Funds raised by CAAF support
children like David, an HIV-positive
child in Brazil whose family is unable
to access necessary medical supplies
and services. Mattel’s support of
CAAF’s efforts in 14 countries across
Latin America and the Caribbean
has positively affected the lives of
almost 20,000 children impacted or
orphaned by HIV/AIDS in 2007.
In 2007, Mattel added the
Make-A-Wish® Foundation as its
sixth Signature Partner, building on
a 10-year relationship of granting
wishes for children facing lifethreatening medical conditions. Mattel
continues to grant American Girl®,
Barbie® and Hot Wheels® wishes
and even created a unique cancerfighting board game as part of
8-year-old Carsten’s wish last year.
For the first time, Mattel created
one-of-a-kind Make-A-Wish® Barbie®
and Hot Wheels® to be given to
newly identified Wish children
across the country. These unique
toys, not available for sale, allow staff
to immediately connect with a child
and best ascertain their true wish.

International Philanthropy
Our grants help fund programs like NOAH, serving children orphaned by HIV/AIDS in South Africa.
Mattel’s philanthropy spreads around the world
through its grantmaking, volunteerism, and toy
donations. Through the Mattel Children’s Foundation,
international grants were made in almost 40 different
countries in 2007. The invitation-only application
process enabled the Foundation to provide grants to
orphanages, playgrounds, youth centers and other
qualifying organizations. In addition, Mattel volunteers
around the world supported Special Olympics and
other charitable activities in their communities.
Mattel toys are also donated locally to children in
need in every country where Mattel manufactures
and sells product.

Children’s Hospitals
Mattel supported children’s hospitals in Austria,
Denmark, Hungary, France, Mexico, Hong Kong,
and the U.S. Funding supported the research and related
treatment for children suffering from severe and
debilitating epilepsy at the pediatrics ward of the
Medical University of Vienna.
Some examples of Mattel’s global philanthropy:
In Belgium and France, Mattel supported programs
that provide smiles to children in hospitals through
the use of specially trained clowns. In Tijuana, Mattel
continued its ongoing commitment to the Children’s
Hospital of the Californias through its sponsorship
of their annual golf tournament as well as annual
toy donations.
Luwan School for Special Needs Children, China
In the midst of the bustling streets of Shanghai is a
school aimed to meet the needs of students with special
needs. Most of these students have learning disabilities
and physical limitations and have no other resources to
support their unique challenges. With Mattel’s support,
the Luwan School for Special Needs provides a learning
environment for children who have no other place to turn
as well as opportunities to learn basic life skills.
IFB: Käenguru, Germany
More than 1,000 children in Germany play in outdoor
park space designed for children with physical and
intellectual disabilities with support from Mattel in
partnership with IFB: Käenguru. The park includes a
healing garden and animal therapy area with llamas
to interact with the many children who visit the park
annually. Mattel employees became involved when
they volunteered their time to help build the park.

Make-A-Wish® Foundation International
Building on its domestic support of the Make-A-Wish®
Foundation of America, Mattel provided funding to
Make-A-Wish® programs in France, Switzerland,
Greece, Netherlands and Australia. These grants
enabled these international affliates to grant wishes
to children like 10-year-old Fien from Belgium whose
wish of riding horses in the wild was granted when
she traveled to southern France with her family to visit
and ride the ancient Camargue breed of horses.
Five-year-old Manuel from Switzerland has battled
leukemia, yet had his wish granted when he rode a
helicopter around the Matterhorn.
Yayasan Sarana Pengembangan Kota –
Cikarang, Indonesia
With Mattel funding, volunteers, and donations,
the Foundation for Cikaring Infrastructure continued
its mission of building and refurbishing rural
schools for children in Indonesia. In 2007, Mattel
helped to build three additional buildings in a school
located in a mountainous, rural region outside of
Jakarta which allowed for running water at the
school, a teacher resource room, and the community’s
first library.
Asociacion Civil Hogar Bambi, Venezuela
Serving more than 100 foster children, Hogar Bambi
provides consistent support to young foster children
through their adolescence. Mattel’s support in 2007
in part allowed Hogar to open a third facility to provide
food, education, medical care and social services to
children without stable home environments.

Domestic Philanthropy
Mattel supports LA SCORES afterschool soccer and literacy programs for inner-city youth.
Mattel provides funding, in-kind donations, and volunteer
support to community organizations and children’s
hospitals across the United States. This includes the 38
grants in 21 states awarded earlier in the year by the
Mattel Children’s Foundation focusing on children’s
literacy, health and girl’s self-esteem. Funding
supported program and operating costs.
Examples include:
Art of Elysium: Supports the self-esteem of girls in
the hospital setting through arts-based curriculum,
including dramatic play and creative arts.
Pajama Program: Provides books, along with a new
set of pajamas, to homeless, abandoned and abused
children in shelters, group homes, and foster care
facilities in New York.
Girls in the Game: Promotes sports and fitness
opportunities, health education and leadership development
for girls in inner-city Chicago.
Florida Introduces Physical Activity & Nutrition to
Youth (FLIPANY): The Eat Right, Get Moving program

engages low-income children in a school-based
nutrition and physical activity program to promote
health and well-being.
Hip Hop Haven: Mentors, particularly African-American
men, read to children in group settings in North Carolina
to promote literacy through the My Bookie – Changing
the Odds program.
LA SCORES: After-school program focused on
building self-esteem and life skills for inner-city youth
through facilitated soccer, creative writing, and
community service activities in Los Angeles.

American Girl® Fund for Children:
In partnership with the Madison Children’s
Museum in Wisconsin, the American Girl®
Annual Benefit Sale has raised almost
$20 million since 1988. A percentage of proceeds of
that sale fund the American Girl® Fund for Children which
supports arts, cultural and environmental organizations for
children and has supported the Madison Civic Center’s
Performing Arts Series for Children, Aldo Leopold Nature
Center, and the Madison Ballet. To date, the American Girl®
Fund for Children has distributed more than $6 million to
support organizations helping children in need.
Make-A-Wish® Hot Wheels® & Barbie®:
These unique toys were created for newly identified
Make-A-Wish® children across the United States and
are not available for purchase.
Special Olympics Hot Wheels®:
Made exclusively for the 7,500 global athletes of the
Special Olympics World Games in Shanghai, China,
the Go for the Gold SO Hot Wheels® commemorates
the unique partnership between Special Olympics and
Mattel and was not available for purchase.

Volunteerism
Youth from local inner-city schools participate in a Mattel Day of Play at the Mattel headquarters campus.
At Mattel, we incorporate volunteerism into our
corporate culture and engage our most valuable
asset, our employees, in our philanthropic activities.
In just our second year, over 2,000 employees
participated in Mattel PLAYers programs around the
world to make a meaningful difference in their local
communities. Through Mattel PLAYers volunteer
activities, employees play with kids during recess at
inner-city schools or play with disadvantaged kids
for a Day of Play at the beach, Disneyland or at the
Mattel Park at the Junior Blind of America. Backpacks
are assembled with school supplies and food kits are
assembled at the local food bank. Trees are planted,
beaches are cleaned and schools and houses are built
with the help of Mattel PLAYers. Mattel’s Indonesian
manufacturing facility hosted a Special Olympics
event for more than 200 athletes and had more than
300 volunteers playing together.

TEAM MATTEL SHANGHAI
Three years ago, Mattel began its partnership playing
together with Special Olympics. Central to that
unique relationship was the opportunity to engage
Mattel employees around the world in the same
volunteer experience to help children, and adults, with
intellectual disabilities through Special Olympics.
Last year, over 2,000 Mattel employees in 15
countries joined Team Mattel, making Mattel
the largest corporate volunteer team in Special
Olympics history. Employees from every unit of
Mattel participated, including manufacturing, finance,
legal, marketing, and retail services to name just a
few. Mattel employees cheered athletes to victory,
distributed water, timed skating races, escorted
athletes to venues, and even kept score at basketball
games.
In October of 2007, Mattel employees from 13 locations
around the world joined together for the first time to
make a meaningful difference by volunteering at the
2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games in
Shanghai, China. The Mattel team of 55 employees
supported the Special Olympics Youth Forum,
the Global Youth Summit and the Global Family
Forum while cheering and supporting athletes. This
international volunteer team became the first team
of its kind in Mattel history and the largest global
corporate team of volunteers for Special Olympics.

Toy Donations
Mattel’s Toy Donation Programs help bring a smile to thousands of children around the world.
There is little more important than providing a smile
to a child who may have little else to smile about.
Mattel donates toys to children in need around the
world, including children in hospitals, youth homes,
shelters, military bases, and orphanages. Almost one
million Barbie® dolls, Hot Wheels® vehicles, Radica®
electronic toys, American Girl® dolls and accessories,
and Fisher-Price® products were donated directly
to children in 2007.
Domestically, Mattel partners with Gifts in Kind
International™, to administer a portion of its
toy donation program and together donated toys to
hundreds of charitable organizations last year.
Mattel Children’s Hospitals Toy Donation Program
Four years ago, Mattel began its Mattel Children’s
Hospitals Toy Donation Program in partnership with
the National Association of Children’s Hospitals
(NACHRI). An assortment of toys appropriate for use in
the hospital setting are made available to more than
220 NACHRI-member children’s hospitals in the U.S.,
Canada and Puerto Rico. Hospitals use the toys in
play rooms, to connect patients with doctors and other
care-givers, and to inspire children who are fighting
severe health challenges in the hospital setting. Some
of these toys are also provided over the holiday
season, ensuring thousands of children staying in the
hospital over the holidays know that Santa can find
them anywhere. To date, Mattel has donated more
than 150,000 toys to children’s hospitals through
this program and it is one of the most widely used
benefits by NAHCRI members.
