For our 65th season, we are thrilled to present two fantastic musicals that we hope you will enjoy! Bye Bye Birdie’s hilarious comedy and catchy songs are performed by one of the largest casts ever to appear on the TUTS stage, while in Anything Goes, more of our city’s best and brightest musical theatre talents strut their stuff to the classic tunes of the great Cole Porter. As one of Vancouver’s largest theatre companies, we pride ourselves on bringing two big Broadway musicals to the stage every summer, and we are fortunate to have many, many committed people who put in huge amounts of hard work and creativity year after year to make this happen. We all hope that you enjoy tonight’s show, and that you’ll come back soon for our second show and another magical outdoor theatre experience. It is thanks to your support that Theatre Under the Stars has been able to entertain more than two million people from around the world for more than half a century. Our mission is simple: to make sure that when you leave Malkin Bowl, it is with a spring in your step, a smile on your face and a tune in your head. Enjoy the show! NAVEEN KAPAHI – Board President On behalf of the TUTS Board of Directors, I want to thank you for choosing TUTS as one of your must-do summer activities. I also wish to extend a very important “thank you!” to all the companies, individuals and suppliers that support our organization with sponsorships, donations and products. Their generosity makes it possible for TUTS to enhance our productions and strengthen our commitment to mentoring young people in many wonderful ways. In particular, we are excited to have TD return as our season sponsor. Their commitment to our community has been evident in each and every one of our discussions, and in the initiatives we have developed together. For example, we are providing free tuition for our summer musical theatre camps to two recipients of the TUTS/TD Rising Star Scholarship; also, our TD Students Are Stars $20/seat program will enable thousands of youth to experience the joy of musical theatre this summer. I invite you to recognize TD and all of the companies listed in this programme, whose contributions have made our 65th season possible. However, it is important to remember that individuals also play a pivotal role in helping any organization to thrive. For a donation of as little as $25 you can receive a tax receipt and other benefits, both tangible and intangible. As you watch tonight’s performance, I invite you to explore with us the ways in which you might help to sustain Theatre Under the Stars and ensure that its future is bright: on stage, backstage, selling programmes, fundraising, a donation of cash or time. Please visit www.tuts.ca for more information. Thank you for coming tonight, and enjoy the show! MALKIN BOWL GETS ‘WINTERIZED’ It might not be visible from where you sit, but Malkin Bowl has just undergone a significant renovation! With contributions from three equal partners, (The Federal Government, Vancouver Parks Board and TUTS), the theatre has been ‘winterized’ that will allow for year-round usage. The project, which includes new heating systems, air conditioning, insulation and a new stage floor, also includes a sliding door that encloses the stage. This winter, Malkin Bowl will be available to local arts groups, theatre groups and other organizations for rehearsals, performances and even board meetings. TUTS would like to thank the numerous organizations and people involved in making this happen, including: The Federal Government, the City of Vancouver, the Vancouver Parks Board Staff (Gordon Barber, Danica Djurkovick and Ernest Fanthorpe), Birmingham and Wood Architects (Sandra Moore) and Companion Construction (David Wootten, David Goertz and especially Eric Meyers). We are excited about what the next hundred years will bring in this iconic outdoor theatre in beautiful Stanley Park. NO ROOM FOR PHOTO 1 TD is proud to be a supporter of Theatre Under the Stars. We are working with Theatre Under the Stars to make a difference in our communities. Having just finished his role as Wiley Post in Will Rogers’ Follies, and having enjoyed his experiences as ensemble for the last 3 years in every Shel Piercy show, he is ready for another magical experience with TUTS. After this summer, he looks forward to many more shows, as well as his training with The Underground Circus company! “When we are gone, all that remains of us is our name and what it has meant to others. Mine is Dimitrios Stephanoy”. JIM STEWART Harry MacAfee Jim is thrilled to be back for another season with TUTS. This time around Jim is playing the hapless Harry MacAfee, who is always convinced he is in charge, yet in reality he is usually the last to know – in other words a typical father of the 1960’s. Jim’s other TUTS credits include Professor Throkmorton in last season’s production of Singin in the Rain, and Uncle Wess in 2004’s production of Footloose. Jim would like to thank his TUTS family, his MacAfee family, and most of all his own family, who lovingly let him think that he is in charge. STEFAN WINFIELD Ed Sullivan Stefan played Randolph in Bye Bye Birdie right here on this stage 35 summers ago. Before that, he was in The Sound of Music for Marpole Community Theatre, which was the last time he had the privilege to work under the dynamic directorship of Shel Piercy, whose gift for storytelling was as evident then as it is today. Since then, Stefan has appeared in a smattering of community productions for local companies (TUTS, Uncle Randy, Metro, Applause, Royal City) and maintained an abiding interest in musicals—thanks mostly to the choreographer of this show, who happens to be his beloved, beautiful, talented and eupeptic spouse. SHERYL ANNE WHEATON Sweet Apple Folk, Script Girl Sheryl Anne’s musical theatre career began at TUTS at age 16 as a chorister in HMS Pinafore, Damn Yankees and Oklahoma! Sheryl then played the title role of Angel in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, receiving the EV Young Award for Most Outstanding Performance By an Actress. The following year she won the title role of Babe Williams in Pajama Game, again receiving the EV Young Award for Most Outstanding Performance. After a long absence returning to the stage in Bye Bye Birdie has been an amazing experience. It’s true what they say: There’s no place like home! DANIEL WHITE Albert Daniel is elated to be back in the Malkin Bowl for a summer with TUTS. A recent graduate of the Canadian College of Performing Arts, Daniel’s first foray into the Vancouver theatre scene was in last year’s production of Singin’ in the Rain. Malkin to build a band-shell in his wife’s memory and a summer tradition was born. Malkin Bowl was originally used for afternoon concerts, and in 1940, a group of local theatre people formed a production company called ‘Theatre-Under-The-Stars’. Sadly, after twenty years of annual performances, increasing costs forced the original company to abandon Malkin Bowl. There was a gap in Vancouver’s arts scene until 1969, when a determined group of volunteers suggested a format that used largely volunteer casts and crews. Summer theatre returned to the park and has continued ever since, despite challenges raised by cost, weather and a fire that nearly destroyed Malkin Bowl. A crucial part of the TUTS mandate is the training of young performers and stage workers who learn their craft alongside professionals. The pages that follow list the recipients of TUTS’ annual awards, many of whom have continued to work in the arts thanks to a start right here in Stanley Park. The Grace Macdonald Award is presented to the most promising dancer; recipients of the Aida Broadbent Award are recognized for professional conduct and performance; the E.V. Young Memorial Fund Scholarships are awarded to the most outstanding non-professional performers, and the Roger and Cecilia Smith Award recognizes the contribution of the many volunteer carpenters, painters, stage crew, make-up, costume, ushers and box-office staff who bring magic to the stage every summer. When you read the bios of the actors and creative teams who have contributed to this season’s productions, you will find some newcomers and some who have a long-standing connection to this company. We hope that tonight, when the curtain goes up and the stage lights go on, you will feel the same thrill so many of us do, and decide to become an ongoing part of TUTS.
