WELCOME MESSAGE
JAMES CRONK – Producer
On behalf of the 250 volunteers and professionals that make up TUTS, thank you for joining
us in Stanley Park’s historic Malkin Bowl this summer. For our 65th season, we are thrilled
to present two fantastic musicals that we hope you will enjoy! Bye Bye Birdie’s hilarious
comedy and catchy songs are performed by one of the largest casts ever to appear on the
TUTS stage, while in Anything Goes, more of our city’s best and brightest musical theatre
talents strut their stuff to the classic tunes of the great Cole Porter. As one of Vancouver’s
largest theatre companies, we pride ourselves on bringing two big Broadway musicals to the
stage every summer, and we are fortunate to have many, many committed people who put in huge amounts
of hard work and creativity year after year to make this happen. We all hope that you enjoy tonight’s show, and
that you’ll come back soon for our second show and another magical outdoor theatre experience. It is thanks
to your support that Theatre Under the Stars has been able to entertain more than two million people from
around the world for more than half a century. Our mission is simple: to make sure that when you leave Malkin
Bowl, it is with a spring in your step, a smile on your face and a tune in your head. Enjoy the show!
NAVEEN KAPAHI – Board President
On behalf of the TUTS Board of Directors, I want to thank you for choosing TUTS as one of
your must-do summer activities. I also wish to extend a very important “thank you!” to all
the companies, individuals and suppliers that support our organization with sponsorships,
donations and products. Their generosity makes it possible for TUTS to enhance our
productions and strengthen our commitment to mentoring young people in many
wonderful ways. In particular, we are excited to have TD return as our season sponsor. Their
commitment to our community has been evident in each and every one of our discussions,
and in the initiatives we have developed together. For example, we are providing free tuition for our summer
musical theatre camps to two recipients of the TUTS/TD Rising Star Scholarship; also, our TD Students Are Stars
$20/seat program will enable thousands of youth to experience the joy of musical theatre this summer. I invite
you to recognize TD and all of the companies listed in this programme, whose contributions have made our 65th
season possible. However, it is important to remember that individuals also play a pivotal role in helping any
organization to thrive. For a donation of as little as $25 you can receive a tax receipt and other benefits, both
tangible and intangible. As you watch tonight’s performance, I invite you to explore with us the ways in which
you might help to sustain Theatre Under the Stars and ensure that its future is bright: on stage, backstage,
selling programmes, fundraising, a donation of cash or time. Please visit www.tuts.ca for more information.
Thank you for coming tonight, and enjoy the show!
MALKIN BOWL GETS ‘WINTERIZED’
It might not be visible from where you sit, but Malkin Bowl has just undergone a significant renovation! With
contributions from three equal partners, (The Federal Government, Vancouver Parks Board and TUTS), the
theatre has been ‘winterized’ that will allow for year-round usage. The project, which includes new heating
systems, air conditioning, insulation and a new stage floor, also includes a sliding door that encloses the
stage. This winter, Malkin Bowl will be available to local arts groups, theatre groups and other organizations
for rehearsals, performances and even board meetings. TUTS would like to thank the numerous organizations
and people involved in making this happen, including: The Federal Government, the City of Vancouver, the
Vancouver Parks Board Staff (Gordon Barber, Danica Djurkovick and Ernest Fanthorpe), Birmingham and Wood
Architects (Sandra Moore) and Companion Construction (David Wootten, David Goertz and especially Eric
Meyers). We are excited about what the next hundred years will bring in this iconic outdoor theatre in beautiful
Stanley Park.

Jamie studies voice with Wendy Bross Stuart and appeared in Rob Carriere’s music video “All Because” and
on Global Television’s Variety Club Show of Hearts. Jamie played Eponine in Les Miserables in Concert
(Broadway Edge Studio). This is her sixth TUTS production, previous credits including Joseph and the
Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (2002, 2010), Big: The Musical (2005), Oklahoma! (2007), and Annie Get
Your Gun (2008). She is pleased to be a part of this wonderful musical under the stars.
NATHAN PIASECKI Randolph
Nathan is ecstatic to be with TUTS as part of the Bye Bye Birdie cast! He recently played Freddy Rogers in
Royal City’s production of Will Rogers Follies. Nathan studies with Lindbjerg Academy of Performing Arts
and played Mowgli in their recent production of The Jungle Book. He has performed in Footlight Theatre’s
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Of Course There Are Fairies and Gift of the Magi.
Nathan earned the Althea Di Gregorio award in the 2011 Kiwanis Music Festival. He thanks TUTS and his
family for all their support.
NATHAN SARTORE Sweet Apple Kid

at the age of 6, and currently trains at Tri-City Dance Centre. His most recent credits include Scrooge
in Alice in a Winter Wonderland (Backstage Youth Performers Society), Out of This World (Gotta Sing!
Gotta Dance!), and Seussical Jr. (Theatrix Youtheatre Society). Nathan performed as a dancer at the 2010
Vancouver Paralympic Winter Games, as well as in Disneyland and on the Norwegian Cruise Lines. Nathan
would like to thank Shel, Shelley, and Kevin for this opportunity. Enjoy the show!
MELISSA SCIARRETTA Sweet Apple Brat
Melissa is thrilled to be part of TUTS for the first time this summer. She has danced competitively for several
years and currently attends Spotlight Dance Centre. Melissa won scholarships for her song and dance
solos at Surrey Dance Festival in each of the past two years. Previous credits include Children’s Chorus in
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat with both Footlight and RCMT. She has also performed
in Lindbjerg Academy’s productions of Peter Pan, Bugsy Malone, Aladdin, and Honk. Melissa would like to
thank Shel, Shelley and Kevin for the opportunity to be part of such a great show!
ETHAN SHANKARUK Sweet Apple Kid
Ethan is elated to find himself playing a “Sweet Apple Kid” in this season’s Bye Bye Birdie with TUTS. It’s
been easy to “Put On A Happy Face” working with this swingin’ cast and crew! Previous theatre credits
include Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (RCMT), Fiddler On The Roof (UBC G&S), Titanic,
The Musical (Applause), High School Noir (Ignite! Youth Festival - Cultch), Under The Hawthorn Tree (The
Two Marys), A Christmas Carol (Footlight), and Oliver! (Vancouver Playhouse). Ethan’s film work includes
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus and Diary of a Wimpy Kid. And yes, Roan is his sister.
ROAN SHANKARUK Sweet Apple Teen
This is Roan’s fourth musical with TUTS, but her first as a “teen”, and she’s thrilled about that! Her favourite
credits include Donna in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Duffy in Annie, Little Jake in
Annie Get Your Gun, Joseph (RCMT), Fiddler On The Roof (UBC G&S), Titanic, The Musical (Applause),
Christmas Carol (Footlight), and Carmen (Vancouver Opera). Last fall Roan was the winner of CBC On The
Coast “Unplugged” best high school singer/songwriter contest with “The Compromise”. She was also a very

BYE BYE BIRDIE
COURTNEY SHIELDS Ursula Merkle, Dance Captain

Theatre Diploma Program, and is currently pursuing her BFA in the Acting Program at UBC. Select credits
include: Millie Owens in Summer Brave (UBC), Henrietta in Singin’ in the Rain (TUTS), Joseph… (RCMT),

unforgettable summer, and her friends and family for their continuing support. Enjoy the show!

Harper has trained with the Jennings Institute since she was 8, studying acting, singing, dance, piano, music
theory, and music history. She is completing her degrees in music, speech arts and acting and voice. She
won provincial competitions in speech arts and acting and musical theatre. Favorite roles include The Witch
in Into The Woods, The Piper in Rats: The Musical, Child in How to Eat Like A Child, and Angela in the short
film, Craven. Harper would like to thank Shel and Shelley and the production team for all their hard work!
DIMITRIOS STEPHANOY Hugo Peabody
It has been an exciting year for Dimitrios. He has come back for his 4th consecutive performance with
TUTS. Having just finished his role as Wiley Post in Will Rogers’ Follies, and having enjoyed his experiences
as ensemble for the last 3 years in every Shel Piercy show, he is ready for another magical experience
with TUTS. After this summer, he looks forward to many more shows, as well as his training with The
Underground Circus company! “When we are gone, all that remains of us is our name and what it has
meant to others. Mine is Dimitrios Stephanoy”.
JIM STEWART Harry MacAfee
Jim is thrilled to be back for another season with TUTS. This time around Jim is playing the hapless Harry
MacAfee, who is always convinced he is in charge, yet in reality he is usually the last to know – in other words
a typical father of the 1960’s. Jim’s other TUTS credits include Professor Throkmorton in last season’s production
of Singin in the Rain, and Uncle Wess in 2004’s production of Footloose. Jim would like to thank his TUTS
family, his MacAfee family, and most of all his own family, who lovingly let him think that he is in charge.
JENNIFER SUTTIS Sweet Apple Kid
Jennifer is thrilled to be back for another season with TUTS. She disovered her passion for the performing
arts at a young age. Jennifer attended The Canadain College of Performing Arts where she obtained her

in acting for screen. Recent credits include Will Rogers’ Follies (RCMT), Singin’ in the Rain (TUTS), Kiss
Me, Kate (CCPA), Broadway Brillance (CCPA/VS) and numerous dance shows with PRP Productions. This
September Jennifer will be performing in Smile: The Musical at the Vancouver Fringe Festival.See you there!
STEFAN WINFIELD Ed Sullivan
Stefan played Randolph in Bye Bye Birdie right here on this stage 35 summers ago. Before that, he was in
The Sound of Music for Marpole Community Theatre, which was the last time he had the privilege to work
under the dynamic directorship of Shel Piercy, whose gift for storytelling was as evident then as it is today.
Since then, Stefan has appeared in a smattering of community productions for local companies (TUTS, Uncle
Randy, Metro, Applause, Royal City) and maintained an abiding interest in musicals—thanks mostly to the
choreographer of this show, who happens to be his beloved, beautiful, talented and eupeptic spouse.
SHERYL ANNE WHEATON Sweet Apple Folk, Script Girl
Sheryl Anne’s musical theatre career began at TUTS at age 16 as a chorister in HMS Pinafore, Damn
Yankees and Oklahoma! Sheryl then played the title role of Angel in The Best Little Whorehouse in
Texas, receiving the EV Young Award for Most Outstanding Performance By an Actress. The following
year she won the title role of Babe Williams in Pajama Game, again receiving the EV Young Award for
Most Outstanding Performance. After a long absence returning to the stage in Bye Bye Birdie has been an
amazing experience. It’s true what they say: There’s no place like home!
DANIEL WHITE Albert
Daniel is elated to be back in the Malkin Bowl for a summer with TUTS. A recent graduate of the Canadian
College of Performing Arts, Daniel’s first foray into the Vancouver theatre scene was in last year’s
production of Singin’ in the Rain. Credits since then include: Mercutio/Sebastian in The Maltese Bodkin
(Fringe Festival), Ichabod Crane in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (DSR Productions), and a Wrangler Quartet
member in Royal City Musical Theatre’s Will Rogers’ Follies, all the while teaching Martial Arts and stagecombat workshops around the province. A thousand thanks go to Shel for giving him this opportunity.

CHELSEY YAMASAKI Sweet Apple Kid
Chelsey has been a per former ever since she can remember. Having danced since she was 4, she continued on to the world
of musical theatre by age 12 and hasn’t stopped since. She has spent the last two years at Grant MacEwan University in their
Theatre Arts Program earning a diploma. There she performed in such shows as High Society, The Music Man, Chekhov’s
Three Sisters and as Viola in Tweltfth Night. This is her first TUTS show and she couldn’t be happier to be back performing in
Vancouver.
SYNTHIA YUSUF Sweet Apple Folk
This is Synthia’s first year working with TUTS. The experience has been thrilling. She is about to enter her second year of
Musical Theatre at Capilano University and looks forward to continuing her performance education. Be sure to catch her this
upcoming fall in Arabian Nights at the Capilano Performing Arts Theatre. Synthia would like to thank the TUTS family for
welcoming her, and hopes to work with them again in the future!
LORI ZONDAG* Doris MacAfee
Lori was seen last year as Zelda Zanders in Singin’ in the Rain and is thrilled to be returning to TUTS for a second year. Lori
moved to Vancouver two and a half years ago from Los Angeles where she performed in film and TV, and toured with such
shows as Will Rogers’ Follies, A Chorus Line, and 42nd Street. When she’s not performing, Lori teaches her co-creation, FUZE,
an adaptive musical theatre class for individuals with special needs. She’s most proud of being able to share this experience
with her daughter, Skyler.
SKYLER ZONDAG Suzie
Skyler is so excited to be making her TUTS debut this summer. She has been singing, dancing and acting ever since her mom
took her to her first dance class at 18 months. Skyler has performed in Willy Wonka, Peter Pan, and Bye Bye Birdie in Los
Angeles with Upstage Theatre Company. In Vancouver she has performed in Peter Pan as well as Alice in Wonderland and
has been a featured member of her musical theatre company. Skyler will be in the 5th grade this fall.

HISTORY OF TUTS
A STANLEY PARK TRADITION!
76 years ago, the Vancouver Park Board used funds from former Mayor W.H. Malkin to build a band-shell in his
wife’s memory and a summer tradition was born. Malkin Bowl was originally used for afternoon concerts, and
in 1940, a group of local theatre people formed a production company called ‘Theatre-Under-The-Stars’. Sadly,
after twenty years of annual performances, increasing costs forced the original company to abandon Malkin
Bowl. There was a gap in Vancouver’s arts scene until 1969, when a determined group of volunteers suggested
a format that used largely volunteer casts and crews. Summer theatre returned to the park and has continued
ever since, despite challenges raised by cost, weather and a fire that nearly destroyed Malkin Bowl.
A crucial part of the TUTS mandate is the training of young performers and stage workers who learn their craft
alongside professionals. The pages that follow list the recipients of TUTS’ annual awards, many of whom have
continued to work in the arts thanks to a start right here in Stanley Park. The Grace Macdonald Award is presented to the most promising dancer; recipients of the Aida Broadbent Award are recognized for professional
conduct and performance; the E.V. Young Memorial Fund Scholarships are awarded to the most outstanding
non-professional performers, and the Roger and Cecilia Smith Award recognizes the contribution of the many
volunteer carpenters, painters, stage crew, make-up, costume, ushers and box-office staff who bring magic to
the stage every summer.
When you read the bios of the actors and creative teams who have contributed to this season’s productions,
you will find some newcomers and some who have a long-standing connection to this company. We hope that
tonight, when the curtain goes up and the stage lights go on, you will feel the same thrill so many of us do, and
decide to become an ongoing part of TUTS.

Cecilia is also our Archivist. She has been a big part of TUTS since appearing in Carousel, which reopened Malkin Bowl in 1969, Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady (1970 and 1980) and Miss Lynch in
Grease (1984). Her work is a year-round gathering of any materials related to the continuing story
of our society. We have programs dating back to 1940, together with videotapes, photographs,
clippings, audiotapes and posters. Please call Cecilia at 604.988.6041 if you have anything to fill in
the gaps and make our story complete.
