A Note from the Artistic Director
Last month, two
teenage girls here in
Washington State were
caught putting bleach
into their classmates’
shampoo and lotion.
This type of dangerous
and intimidating prank garners lots of
attention in the news. Whether it’s physical
violence or verbal put downs, bullying can
seem to be alarmingly pervasive in schools
and communities today.
Sociologists tell us that some of the
strictest hierarchies operate within the strata
of middle and high school social groups. The
dynamics and relationships found in Crash
play out in middle schools everywhere. While
the issues surrounding bullying are often
hard to discuss, Crash offers a funny, personal
story that explores these issues in a way that
resonates with adolescents. Students will
connect to these characters and their peer
group struggles.
Our world premiere production of Crash
is based on the popular book of the same
name by Jerry Spinelli. Jerry is a Newbery
Medal–winning writer who truly understands
young people. His messages are serious,
but shared with young audiences through
humor and identifiable characters. Jerry’s
story comes alive on stage through Y York’s
artful adaptation. We commissioned Y as the
playwright because of her skill at dramatizing
important works of literature. Her first play

Synopsis
Crash Coogan seems to have it all – good
grades, natural athleticism, popular friends. But
what he can’t seem to get is the attention of his
preoccupied father and the new girl in town,
Jane. Despite being the target of Crash’s bullying,
Penn Webb, his unconventional neighbor, enjoys
a happy life with a pet turtle, strong family
support and Jane’s friendship. Penn wants to
earn a coveted spot on the Penn Relays team to
honor his great grandfather. Crash wants to win
that spot just to prove he can. Things change
when his grandfather suffers a stroke and Crash
realizes finishing first isn’t the most important
thing. This production shares important insights
and demonstrates author Jerry Spinelli’s appeal to
older elementary students.

“I have this theory if one
person can go out of their
way to show compassion,
then it will start a chain
reaction of the same.
People will never
know how far a little
kindness can go.”
-Rachel Scott
Thirteen years ago, a teenage
girl named Rachel Scott died in the
horrific Columbine shooting. In her
honor, her parents started a nonprofit
organization, Rachel’s Challenge,
offering a series of empowering
programs and strategies that equip
students and adults to combat
bullying and allay feelings of isolation
and despair by creating a culture of
kindness and compassion.
The organization’s website reports
that: “Each day 160,000 students do
not go to school because they are
bullied, teased and harassed.” Rachel’s
Challenge is, in part, designed to
combat this statistic. The organization
encourages people to ignite a chain
reaction with random acts of kindness.
Though based in Colorado, the
organization and its urgent message
have enjoyed a significant and ongoing
nationwide impact, touching schools
in Belgium, British Columbia and
throughout the U.S. In Washington
state in recent years, students from
White River High School, some
Edmonds schools and all public
schools in the Enumclaw district (from
Sunrise Elementary to Enumclaw
High School) have learned of Rachel’s
Challenge. In conjunction with the
Challenge, earlier this year, Enumclaw
students pledged to commit 26 acts of
kindness to honor the victims of the
Sandy Hook tragedy.
Rachel’s Challenge offers useful
tips for all ages, including simple,
actionable ideas for elementary
students such as “use kind words,
do nice things and include others.”
In addition to support for students,
the organization offers resources for
educators, parents and businesses.
Gather ideas, take the challenge
and read more information at

A Message From
Season Sponsor
We believe that a thriving arts and
cultural scene, a network of critical
human services providers, and a worldclass education system are important to
the continued vitality and attractiveness
of the Puget Sound region.
Welcome! Seattle Children’s Theatre and
Microsoft share a passion for creativity,
learning and excellence. Year after year,
SCT delivers high quality entertainment
that captivates the imagination, emotion
and intellect of our region’s young people
and their families. That is why we are very
proud to sponsor the 2012-2013 season.
Since Microsoft began in 1975, we have
strived to make community involvement an
integral part of our business and corporate
culture. With nearly 40,000 of the company’s
employees and their families calling this
region home, Microsoft supports the
work of local nonprofits and encourages
employee investment and volunteerism in the
community. In fact, this year marks the 30th
anniversary of Microsoft’s employee giving
campaign.
We believe that a thriving arts and cultural
scene, a network of critical human services
providers, and a world-class education system
are important to the continued vitality and
attractiveness of the Puget Sound region.
Through partnerships with organizations such
as SCT, we want to help create an environment
where the arts will thrive and be enjoyed for
generations to come. On behalf of Microsoft
and our employees in the Puget Sound area,
we want to thank SCT for enriching our
community.

At Holland America Line, we believe that
the performing arts help create a deeper

as we do with nearly 500 cruises to more
than 350 ports around the world, we are

SCT. Both of our organizations strive
to help develop human potential and
enhance the quality of life in our
community.
SCT plays a vital role in the Puget Sound
artistic sphere, extending arts education
to youth and creating future arts patrons.
By presenting important stories on stage,
SCT’s work supports the development of
empathy, imagination, and natural inquiry.
The Foundation values these qualities as
essential to human growth and believes the
performing arts positively affect humanity
as a whole.
Our ongoing partnership with SCT is
based on a long-standing mutual
commitment to enrich the lives of young
people in our community. The world
premiere production of Crash is a story
of shifting perspectives and priorities, as
empathy becomes more important than
success in this funny and touching look
at friendship. We are honored to support
and promote the play’s strong anti-bullying
message and help audiences connect with
author Jerry’s Spinelli’s literary appeal.
We hope you and your family enjoy
the show.
Sincerely,
Laurie & Scott Oki
Based on the popular novel by Jerry
Spinelli, today’s production of Crash
follows the story of a popular athlete who
gradually reconsiders his priorities. The
show’s messages concerning bullying,
friendship, and social hierarchy support
the Foundation’s objective of dealing with
significant community problems, and this
world premiere is a timely, relevant story
that will engage students with theatre as
well as these important social issues.
The Nesholm Family Foundation is
honored to partner with SCT to help make
this production possible. Thank you for
joining us in the audience today and for
being among the community of people
who value the arts.
